Champions League: Back PSV to threaten Barcelona

PSV and Ajax will represent the Dutch in the Champions League and it doesn’t get much tougher than an away trip to the Nou Camp for Marc van Bommel’s side. Will Burns previews early Tuesday evening’s huge tie.

FC Barcelona vs. PSV

Tuesday, 17.55BST – Live on BT Sport 1

This will be the first clash between Barcelona and PSV for over 20 years and what a daunting task this will be for Marc van Bommel as he returns to the Nou Camp as a head coach. However, his side travels to Spain in incredible form.

The Eindhoven side has won their last seven games in all competitions scoring a staggering 27 goals and conceding five including a 7-0 win away to ADO Den Haag last time out. The firepower of Gaston Pereiro, Steven Bergwijn, Luuk de Jong and Hirving Lozano have been responsible for notching twenty of the aforementioned 27 goals, and despite the gulf in class in the standard of teams, Barca will need to beware of the PSV forward line.

Barcelona themselves are on a winning streak of five, but this past weekend that record was in jeopardy. Real Sociedad hosted the first game in their newly refurbished Anoeta Stadium and led for the majority of the game after taking a 12th-minute lead from an Aritz Elustondo volley after Barca failed to clear a free-kick.

Similarly to how I envisage PSV to attack, although they have much possession, Sociedad looked dangerous on the counter, and Barca found this difficult to manage at times and their possession lacked any kind of penetration in the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, after a frustrating first-half, coach Ernesto Valverde switched Sergi Roberto into full-back after the break as Phillipe Coutinho replaced Nélson Semedo and the former Liverpool man was influential in turning the game around.

The entrance of the Brazilian gave Barca a faster movement in possession and former Ajacied striker Luis Suarez and Ousamma Dembele notched to clinch a close fought win. For the best bet in this one, I cannot look past a home win, however; the scorers of 27 goals in seven games, PSV, like Sociedad this past Saturday, are more than capable to grab a goal.

Team news

FC Barcelona
Valverde experimented with his midfield this past weekend but look for him to select his strongest side with tunnel vision on the Champions League this season. Sergio Busquets and Coutinho were left out of the starting line-up, but they should come back in alongside Ivan Rakitic.

PSV Eindhoven
Not one to use much rotation, Van Bommel fielded a strong eleven at the weekend, but Erick Gutierrez has made a claim to start. The newly signed Mexican midfielder impressed from the bench on his debut scoring and creating another in the 7-0 victory against ADO.

Eredivisie Team of the Week: Peterson rises as PSV & Ajax dominate

The Eredivisie season is back and so is our Player of the Year tournament. Every week Will Burns and Steve Davies select the best 11 from that week’s action and each player is awarded one point. One member of the team will win the ‘Player of the Week’ award and be awarded two points. Check the current standings here.

Two-goal Kristoffer Peterson claims our two-point Player of the Week prize as his side Heracles smashed Heerenveen 5-3 as the Swede also grabbed an assist in the win.

PSV and Ajax dominate the team taking eight of the eleven slots in the side. PSV smashed seven past ADO and Hirving Lozano and Luuk de Jong were obviously amongst the goals. Debutant Erick Gutierrez came off the bench to assist and score his own goal in the 7-0 rout.

Ajax, readying themselves for a Champions League group match against AEK midweek, defeated FC Groningen by three goals to no reply and veteran striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar and Dusan Tadic notched the goals.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: PSV in Seventh Heaven!

Header-EredivisieReport

With no Friday fixture following the international break, the fifth round of Eredivisie action got underway on Saturday evening with reigning Eredivisie champions, PSV Eindhoven tuning up for their UEFA Champions League encounter with Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Tuesday evening by hitting a hapless ADO Den Haag for seven in The Hague while VVV Venlo withstood a late fightback from hosts, De Graafschap to pick up their second win of the campaign.

Image result for ado psv

Elsewhere, a double from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and a goal from Dušan Tadić saw the second of the Netherlands’ UEFA Champions League hopefuls, Ajax prepare for their meeting with AEK Athens on Wednesday evening by hitting struggling FC Groningen for three at the Johan Cruijff ArenA to move to within two points of pacesetting PSV while two goals in the space of two minutes saw Willem II come from two-down to salvage an unlikely point late on against visiting Excelsior.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the AFAS Stadion where a Steven Berghuis effort five minutes before the break ultimately proved enough to earn Feyenoord a point against AZ Alkmaar.

In the day’s other games, a scrambled effort from Branislav Ninaj nine minutes from time ultimately proved the difference as Fortuna Sittard edged out hosts, NAC Breda in a five-goal thriller to post the club’s first victory since returning to the top flight of Dutch football while second-half goals from substitute, Luciano Slagveer, and Glen Bijl saw FC Emmen come from a goal down to post their second victory since achieving Eredivisie status at the expense of an undermanned FC Utrecht.

Meanwhile, Kristoffer Peterson’s second of the afternoon followed by a Mohammed Osman effort two minutes from time eventually put Heracles out of sight in an eight-goal thriller with Heerenveen before the fifth round of Eredivisie action was brought to a close at the MAC³PARK Stadion where a first-half double from Tim Matavž saw Vitesse Arnhem get back to winning ways at the expense of struggling PEC Zwolle.

Eredivisie Team of the Week: Four-goal El Khayati claims the MVP

The Eredivisie season is back and so is our Player of the Year tournament. Every week Will Burns and Steve Davies select the best 11 from that week’s action and each player is awarded one point. One member of the team will win the ‘Player of the Week’ award and be awarded two points. Check the current standings here.

FOUR goals by Nasser El Khayati more than earns himself Player of the Week! The attacking midfielder, a summer signing from Queens Park Rangers has hit six goals for the season already.

It’s the oldest strikeforce in the Eredivisie up top for our Team of the Week as Robin van Persie and Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s goals made them a no-brainer in the forward line.

PSV smashed Willem II 6-1 thanks to two goals from Nick Viergever and boy did Angelino put in a shift. The Spanish left-back on-loan from Manchester city certainly looks a talent at this early stage.

Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech are other entries from Ajax as they led their side to a 4-0 away victory in Arnhem versus Vitesse.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: PSV hit Willem II for six as Ajax are four-midable

Header-EredivisieReport

The fourth week of action in the Eredivisie got underway on Friday night at De Oude Meerdijk where a late Fabian Serrarens effort two minutes from time earned visiting De Graafschap a late share of the spoils against another newly-promoted side, FC Emmen.

Saturday began in Venlo where a 69th minute effort from substitute, Patrick Joosten saw hosts, VVV claim a point against visiting Heerenveen.

Elsewhere an incredible four-goal performance from Abdenasser El Khayati helped ADO Den Haag secure a second win in as many games away at Excelsior while reigning Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven made it six wins on the bounce in all competitions by hitting a hapless Willem II for six.

Saturday’s action was brought to a close in Sittard where Andrija Novakovich’s deflected 74th minute strike ultimately proved sufficient to see newly-promoted Fortuna share the spoils with visitors, FC Utrecht to post just their second point since making their return to the top flight of Dutch football.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway in Groningen where a lone Vito van Crooij effort nineteen minutes into the second half proved just enough to see PEC Zwolle bag their first points of the campaign and move off the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Ajax followed up securing a place in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League by hitting Vitesse for four without reply in Arnhem while, despite taking a 2nd minute lead through Myron Boadu, early season pacesetters, AZ Alkmaar ultimately slipped to a first league defeat of the campaign after goals from Mohammed Osman, Kristoffer Peterson and Lerin Duarte sealed a come-from-behind victory for hosts, Heracles in Almelo.

The fourth round of action in the Dutch top flight was brought to a close at De Kuip where Feyenoord edged into third place in the standings by hitting visiting NAC Breda for four to secure their third win in as many games.

Eredivisie Betting: Lets back goals to boost our profits

Header-EredivisiePreview

Will Burns (with a little help from Steve Davies) cleaned up last night in the Eerste Divisie nailing two out of two bets for a profit of £31.00 off the MVV-Go Ahead match. Now that the football season is in full swing and new signings are settling in, here’s a treble for Saturday and Sunday’s Eredivisie.

robin van persie

There’s three shorter prices than I normally tips today but if we combine them we nearly get £45 back from a £10 stake.

First off, I see goals aplenty in the VVV-Venlo vs. SC Heerenveen (Kick Off 17.30BST) match tonight. I feel this will be a very open game with chances at both ends throughout the 90 minutes. Last time out, Jan Olde Riekerink’s Heerenveen hosted Feyenoord in an eight-goal thriller that ended in the Friesland side losing 5-3 to the Rotterdammers. Week before that was a valiant 1-1 draw at home to Vitesse, which could have easily seen more goals with Vitesse having 23 goals attempts. The opening week saw Riekerink’s side beat PEC Zwolle 3-2 and again the opposition saw 18 chances throughout the game. I see VVV experiencing similar joy against the Heerenveen defence as well as taking some punishment themselves. I side more with the Heerenveen win rather than the draw or a home win but let’s play it safe and have a dabble on Over 2.5 Goals.

Similar thoughts in the next game but I am unsure of the striking abilities of either side as ADO Den Haag visiting Excelsior on Saturday evening at 18.45BST. In the last six home games in all competitions, Excelsior has seen goals at either end. In all three league games for ADO so far, they have see goals in both ends in all three outings. I see Both Teams to Score as our best chance of profit in this game so this is my second entry in the treble.

Mitchell van der Gaag’s NAC Breda have not started the season well and face a daunting trip to De Kuip on Sunday afternoon (15:45BST) for our final tip. Despite a decent 3-0 win at home to De Graafschap two weeks ago, they suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Excelsior last weekend. AZ Alkmaar pasted them 5-0 on the opening day and I see more of the same on the Sunday in Rotterdam. Feyenoord after an initial blip in the league, a 2-0 defeat away to De Graafschap, have looked unstoppable ever since. Smashing Excelsior 3-0 in the first home game of the season and then putting five past Heerenveen, as earlier mentioned. Feyenoord -1 on the handicap rounds out our treble.

Good luck if you’re betting!

Eerste Divisie: Back the flying Go Ahead Eagles to keep soaring

After experiencing a 100% success on the Eredivisie last weekend, Will Burns ventures into the Dutch First Division to find a great value bet to try and boost the profits.

stegeman john go ahead

MVV Maastricht vs. Go Ahead Eagles

Friday, 19:00BST

Go Ahead Eagles legend John Stegeman (pictured above) has had a dream start with two wins out of two since returning to the club as head coach. The 41-year-old starred as a player in 1997 and went on to make 86 appearances scoring 19 goals and he’ll be more than happy at his sides’ start to the new campaign.

Stegeman’s attacking style is proving to being very successful with leading the Eagles to a 5-0 thumping of Jong Utrecht on opening day and followed up last weekend with a 2-1 win away to FC Eindhoven. Two results that have seen them top of the table after just two outings. They have seen a total of 34 goal attempts with 19 shots on target so far and this attacking prowess will be one that MVV has not experienced yet this season.

MVV were defeated 2-0 on the first day of the season at home to TOP Oss but had a turn of fortune away to Telstar winning 1-0 last weekend. Their squad does not host the talents that Go Ahead hold do and I see the 2/1 being offered for an away win as being far too high.

Solid at the back led by former Heracles defender Jeroen Veldmate protecting goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst who made a summer switch from FC Volendam. Attacking the wings is Czech international Jaroslav Navrátil who supplies former Crawley Town striker Thomas Verheijdt up top.

My good colleague Steve Davies (a long time Go Ahead fan) would not let me post this article without including his tip which again looks a cracking bet – he selects summer signing Richard van der Venne to get on the score sheet. The 26-year-old midfielder has been playing in an advanced role for Stegeman and has notched in both games this season already. If you wish to combine the two bets, 888Sport provide this service but that is not an official recommendation.

Champions League: Back PSV in the BATE goal-fest

Will Burns is on fire with two wins out of two on weekend’s Eredivisie action that has boosted our profits to £43.25. With a one goal advantage PSV can progress to the Champions’ League group stages with just a draw on Wednesday night, however Will thinks there will may be some trouble ahead.

PSV vs.  BATE Borisov

Wednesday, 20:00BST Live on BT Sport 3

PSV and Marc van Bommel are nearly in Thursday’s group draw with a hard fought 3-2 win last Tuesday in Borisov however, BATE will roll in Eindhoven knowing they have the ability to breach the PSV backline, and that’s where I’m honing in on for today’s bet.

After last week’s game, BATE may be struggling to cope with the regrets with the first leg as PSV put qualification on a plate for them. PSV were rocked to the core when Jasse Tuominen poked BATE ahead after just nine minutes but Van Bommel’s side progressively showed their superiority to claw back to 1-1 with a Gaston Pereiro penalty. On the hour mark, Mexican winger Hirving Lozano grabbed the lead for his side with a wonderful strike.

Donyell Malen PSV

But still the fight was there from BATE and some poor PSV defending gave veteran midfielder Alexander Hleb a goal off the bench in the 88th minute. However, PSV overcome this by venturing down the other end after the restart and youngster Donyell Malen, also a substitute, notched a headed winner on 89 minutes.

PSV got out of Borisov by the skin of their teeth and it won’t be easy on Wednesday at the Philips Stadion. Now the odds are massively stacked against the Belarusians but I can see them scoring a goal with PSV with the talent to notch a few themselves. PSV win with Both Teams to Score is a huge price at over 2/1 and I love the 2.80 on Over 3.5 Goals too.  Let’s go for that too in case we end up a high scoring draw with is very capable in a match of such magnitude.

This match, along with the Ajax game the night prior, is huge for the future of Dutch football. Good luck to both sides!

BATE Borisov
Alexander Hleb could make the first eleven after scoring last week from the bench and in need of goals, BATE could play with two up front, If so, Maksim Skavysh would be the name added to the teamsheet.

Eerste Divisie: Super Mario at the double for Roda JC… again!

Header-EersteDivisieReport

We saw a total of 36 goals over the ten Eerste Divisie games this weekend, Will Burns is here with all the action.

Roda JC mario engels

Go Ahead Eagles are the frontrunners at the top of the table after two games, however only on goal difference as TOP Oss, RKC Waalwijk and Roda JC, like the Eagles, have won both of their games.

John Stegeman’s Go Ahead defeated FC Eindhoven 2-1 thanks to goals from Istvan Bakx and Richard van der Venne. Debutant Portuguese winger Marcelo Lopes replied for Eindhoven.

TOP Oss smashed Jong PSV 4-1 as Huseyin Dogan (2), Norichio Nieveld and Bryan Smeets got on the scoresheet.

Five goals were shared as RKC defeated FC Den Bosch 3-2. Mario Bilate grabbed a brace in his first goals for the club since moving from FC Emmen in the summer.

Mario Engles (mobbed in the picture above) hit a double last week against Jong Ajax and managed another two in a 2-1 win over Almere City this week to give Roda JC their second win. I said in the Eerste Divisie season preview that the German would make an impact this season but I did not expect him to notch four goals at this stage.

Eredivisie Team of the Week: Ziyech is our silky star man

Welcome to week three of the Total Dutch Football.com Eredivisie Player of the Year tournament. Every week Will Burns and Steve Davies select the best 11 from that week’s action and each player is awarded one point. One member of the team will win the ‘Player of the Week’ award and be awarded two points. Check the current standings here.

Hakim Ziyech was our standout player of the week. The Moroccan international was influential in the 5-0 drubbing over FC Emmen, torturing the defence with his plays and shots.

Luuk de Jong snatched his first two goals of the season in a last gasp 2-1 win over PEC Zwolle. Three Willem II players made the team. Fernando Lewis, Donis Avdijaj and Fran Sol were the pick of the team that thumped Heracles by five goals to nil.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: PSV get Luuky, Ajax hit five and an eight-goal thriller

Header-EredivisieReport

Week three of the Eredivisie got underway on Friday in The Hague where a double from Abdenasser El Khayati and a goal from Melvyn Lorenzen saw ADO Den Haag past visiting Fortuna Sittard to post their first points of the campaign at the third time of asking.

Saturday began with Ajax tuning up for the return leg of their Champions League play-off tie against Dynamo Kiev by hitting Eredivisie debutants FC Emmen for five at the Johan Cruijff ArenA while a lone Michael Breij effort a minute before the break ultimately proved enough to earn Groningen their first points of the season on the road in Doetinchem against another of the division’s newly promoted sides, De Graafschap.

luuk de jong PSV

Saturday was concluded with two fixtures kicking off at the same time with goals from Ali Messaoud and Jeffry Fortes seeing Excelsior pick up their first victory of the campaign at the expense of NAC Breda while a last-gasp effort from Luuk de Jong in the third minute of added time saw reigning champions, PSV Eindhoven post a fourth-straight win in all competitions at the expense of hosts, PEC Zwolle to leave Mark van Bommel’s men top of the table and in confident mood ahead of the return leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie with BATE Borisov on Wednesday night.

Sunday kicked off in Tilburg where a Fran Sol treble helped fire Willem II to a five-star display against visiting Heracles and, in the process, a second win in as many games.

Elsewhere, a second half spot kick from Tino-Sven Susic ultimately proved enough to earn VVV Venlo a share of the spoils in Utrecht while Feyenoord withstood a late fight back from hosts, Heerenveen to bag all three points in an eight-goal thriller in Friesland.

The weekend was concluded at the AFAS Stadion where a resolute performance from Vitesse Arnhem saw their clash with AZ Alkmaar end goalless, frustrating the host’s hopes of topping the Eredivisie standings for a third week in succession.

Eredivisie: PSV to extend their perfect start against PEC Zwolle

Header-EredivisiePreview

Defending Eredivisie champions PSV travel to Zwolle to face PEC on Saturday and Will Burns provides his selections in a match that he sees the Eindhoven side dominating.

dante rigo

PEC Zwolle vs. PSV

Saturday, 19:45BST

Spirits will be high in the PSV camp after surviving a late scare in Belarus on Tuesday night against BATE Borisov in the Champions League playoff. PSV were leading 2-1 in the majority of the second half before former Arsenal and Barca midfielder Aleksandr Hleb notched an equaliser in the 88th minute. However, young striker Donyell Malen went straight up the other end with a minute left on the clock to clinch the 3-2 victory. This places Marc van Bommel’s side in good stead to progress in Wednesday’s second leg.

My selection is PSV to be winning at half-time and full-time mainly due to fact that Zwolle have been defeated this way in five out of their last seven league games. But also PEC, now under the tutelage of John van’t Schip, have looked horrendous in their opening two games. Defeated 2-0 last week by FC Utrecht also suffered a 3-2 loss on the opening night of the league against ten-men Heerenveen.

In addition, PSV have found the net before half-time in all three games this season. They have also have been victorious in their last seven outings against PEC Zwolle in all competitions so despite whether or not they have one eye on the big European tie vs. BATE on Wednesday, I can’t look past them to walk away from Zwolle with another three points.

Team news
PEC Zwolle
Midfielder Kenneth Paal (on-loan from PSV) cannot play against his parent club but new signing Ouasim Bouy is in the squad. Bouy comes in from Leeds United and it is third time on-loan to Zwolle.

PSV
Van Bommel may rest some players ahead of Wednesday’s tie but more likely he will reduce their playing time. Last week against Fortuna Sittard, he kept the same starting eleven despite a Champions League tie a few days later.

Key stat
PEC Zwolle have been losing at both half time and full time in five of their last seven matches.

EREDIVISIE: Expect goals in the ADO-Fortuna clash

Header-EredivisiePreview

Week three of the Eredivisie is already upon us and Will Burns sees Friday Night Voetbal providing a goal fest that we can take advantage of.

Andrija Novakovich

ADO Den Haag vs. Fortuna Sittard

Friday, 19:00BST

ADO Den Haag find themselves in the bottom three after two rounds of fixtures however, their opponents on Friday, Fortuna Sittard only fair two places and one point better. This match is not going to be barnburner right? Wrong. I can see goals and here’s my reasoning.

Fortuna impressed last weekend in a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to PSV. Club legend Marc van Bommel was the opposing manager and admitted his side were ‘fortunate’ to claim the win. the defending Eredivisie champions ended up snatching the three points due to a Dante Rigo last minute strike. USA international Andrija Novakovich (on loan from English Championship side Reading) placed home the equalising goal for Fortuna after falling behind to a Hirving Lozano opener.

In their opening game they clinched a point away to ten-man Excelsior in a match that they were more than capable of winning, forcing five shots on goal in the second half.  For ADO, they have been haemorrhaging goals and I can see Fortuna breaching their defence. Den Haag’s opening game ended in a bit of history. It was FC Emmen’s first ever Eredivisie game in which they won their first game by two goals to one.

ADO ended up 2-0 down before half time and things did not improve in week two. A travel to Almelo proved to have an eventful first half also as ADO were 3-2 down at the break. They finished the game 4-2 losers and I can see more goals flying in on Friday night. ADO are capable of scoring goals and conceding and they are the keys in my selection in this one. Back Both Teams to Score with Over 2.5 Goals, this is my selection to get us back to winning ways.

Recommendation

Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals

Team news
ADO Den Haag
