LOANEE ROOM RETURNS TO VITESSE

Team-Vitesse

Eloy Room, who has spent this season on loan at Go Ahead Eagles, has returned back to his parent club Vitesse Arnhem.

Room has started all twenty games for Eagles this campaign, has been ordered to return to Vitesse as the Arnhem club as suffering an injury crisis in the goalkeeping department. Estonian ‘keeper Marko Meerits is due to have an operation on a troubled knee and will be out of action for 8-10 weeks. With the young Jereon Houwen, 17, the only cover for first-choice Piet Velthuizen, manager Peter Bosz recalled the Dutch-Curaçaoan immediately.

Eagles head coach Foeke Booy is disappointed but understand’s Vitesse’s position. Talking to www.ga-eagles.nl, the clubs official website, Booy said: ‘This is unfortunate for us, but there was nothing in our power to keep Eloy here. There was a clause in the deal that allowed Vitesse to recall Eloy in the event of an injury to any of their goalkeepers.

“I spoke Eloy to about this situation and I totally understand and I thanked him for his efforts. He stated that he would loved to continue here with us, but unfortunately it’s not happening.”

Booy is now left with three inexperienced goalkeepers to choose from with Erik Cummins (25) set to start away to NEC Nijmegen on Sunday. Cummins has been the number two goalkeeper for the majority of the season but now, Ruben Lucas (19) and Patrick Ter Mate (21) will be competing for the spot on the bench.

Heerenveen sign Lurling

Team-Heerenveen

Ten years after leaving for Feyenoord, 36-year-old Anthony Lurling has returned to Heerenveen on a deal until the end of the season.

36-year-old Anthony Lurling is not ready yet

Lurling has already stated that even at the age of 36, he wants to impress and win a longer contract at the Friesland club.

The striker, who will be 37 in April, arrives from NAC Breda where he has spent the last seven seasons, making 190 appearances scoring 33 goals.

Lurling had plenty of offers but chose Heerenveen out of them all: “When I was allowed to leave Köln eight years ago, the telephone hardly rang. Now I’m 36 and when NAC said I was allowed to leave, the phone has been ringing off the hook with Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie teams interested and also Belgian clubs.”.

Heerenveen’s director of football, Hans Vonk is delighted with the Lurling capture and looks to him nurture the young talent at the club: “Anthony is an experienced player who can play in many positions. We have a talented, but young team that could really do with the support of an experienced player like Anthony. Also, with Anthony knowing the club, this is a huge advantage which will make the transition that much easier.”

The move from NAC was arranged, after this past week, Lurling clashed with Breda manager Nebojša Gudelj after the coach has failed to select the player since the 1-0 win over Cambuur on December 21st 2013.

Crystal Palace soaring towards Bjelland

Team-FCTwente

FC Twente and manager Michel Jansen are bracing for a bid for Danish central defender Andreas Bjelland from English Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace.

Twente-verdediger droomt van Engeland en is trots op interesse

Palace, managed by Tony Pulis, are currently sitting in 16th but only two points off the relegation places and are looking to bolster their defensive options with the 6ft 2 centre-back.

The 25-year-old will be a great asset to Pulis, who is known for his long ball football and uses height to his team’s advantage. The Dane is a master at aerial duels and his great concentration has helped Twente to helped four clean sheets this season when he has played, including a man-of-the-match performance in the narrow 1-0 away win to Cambuur.

The Dane always shows great discipline for a defender and has only been booked this season in 21 games for club and country. For the Danish national side, Bjelland has won 12 international caps and scored twice.

Bjelland has confirmed in the past that he has an ambition to play in England: “Where and when it will be, we must take time, but I have a dream of one day coming to England and playing.”

Whether or not Bjelland will be interested in a move to Palace, remains to be seen but as the London club faces some stiff competition from Russian giants CSKA Moscow for the defender’s signature.

Feyenoord look to future Cuban talents

Team-Feyenoord

Dutch giants Feyenoord, currently sitting fourth in the Eredivisie are well renowned for producing great talents.

In the past stars like Ruud Gullit, Johan Cruyff and current manager Ronald Koeman have all being given their ‘big break’ at the Rotterdam club and went on to become Dutch footballing legends. The current crop of home-grown stars like Stefan de Vrij, Jordy Clasie and Tonny Vilhena are excelling and wowing scouts from some of Europe’s top sides.

In an interesting development, the Dutch side have branched out into the Caribbean in Havana, Cuba. The club opened up a five-day soccer clinic earlier this month, in the nation where the main sports that are watched and participated in are boxing, baseball and basketball.

Feyenoord sent two ex-players to Havana to run the clinic, former striker Robin Nelisse (from the Dutch Antilles) and ex-Oranje international defender Ulrich van Gobbel. Nelisse and Van Gobbel coached and scouted the youngsters with ages ranging from six to sixteen, looking to take anyone that catches their eye to Rotterdam on a trial at their youth academy.

With football not being big in the nation, Cuba has always struggled with qualifying for major tournaments and developing youngsters as the lack of investment in football has always been a problem. However, Nelisse was impressed with the youngsters he has trained and speaking to Sarah Rainsford of the BBC, he stated: ‘The discipline of the kids is really good, if you tell them something and they will listen and they work really good.’

Van Gobbel added: ‘If you compare the level of talent to Holland, it is low but I think the first thing that is really important that the kids have pleasure playing the game. If they experience pleasure then we can see if some kids have more quality than others but it most important that they enjoy the experience.’

A main problem for the two coaches was that although Nelisse and Van Gobbel can speak excellent English and basic Spanish, communicating with the kids was a challenge, but by a few days the kids were responding well.

The Cuban trainer at the academy, Alfredo Martinez stated that since the opening of the school in Havana, he has seen a vast important from the majority of the youngsters. Now that football is becoming more popular in the country, other sports are being dropped by the children in favour of ‘the beautiful game’ with the Spanish La Liga being the most watched league on Cuban television.

To gain some publicity and to help political relations with the communist country, Dutch foreign minister, Franz Timmermans was present on 6th January at the training camp. He is the first member of the Dutch government to ever visit Cuba.

Timmermans looked to the visit to strengthen political links between the Netherlands and Cuba. Timmermans said: ‘I am a strong believer in football diplomacy. I think that it is important that we increase the human contacts of Europe and the people of Cuba and sport is a fantastic way of doing this.’

Fulham flop to be loaned to PSV

Team-PSV

Costa Rican attacking midfielder Bryan Ruiz has agreed to join PSV Eindhoven on loan for the rest of the season after a disappointing season and a half in the Premier League with Fulham.

Purchased in August 2011 for £10.6m by the now-departed manager Martin Jol, big things were expected from the 28-year-old. However, Ruiz has failed to live up to expectations and scored just eight goals for the Cottagers in 68 appearances.

Before moving to London, Ruiz starred for FC Twente. Twente signed the Costa Rican for €5 from Belgian side Racing Genk, and the player signed a four-year contract. In the Eredivisie, he netted 35 times in 65 games thus earning him the admirations of Martin Jol.

This past week, new Fulham boss René Meulensteen while talking to the BBC, he stated that Ruiz would be allowed to leave in this transfer window due to the player’s demands to play first team football: “We have allowed Bryan Ruiz to talk to a number of clubs to see if something can come out of that.

“Don’t get me wrong, he is a very good player. I’ve come in, I’ve looked at the squad, worked with these players, I’ve picked my teams on what I think are the right reasons and motivations, but I can also understand Bryan’s point of view.

“He is a good player, has a World Cup coming up and he obviously needs to play, but I can’t, like with any other player, guarantee that.”

PSV Technical Director Marcel Brands tonight has spoke to Eindhoven’s Dagblad and confirmed that the player has agreed to join PSV. The Eindhoven club has no option to buy Ruiz, but they will pay Fulham a €1m fee to loan the player and will now apply for a work permit. Tomorrow, Ruiz will travel to Eindhoven to finalize deal.

Labyad glad to return to the Eredivisie

Team-Vitesse

Vitesse Arnhem, chasing their first ever Eredivisie title, have further reinforced their midfield with the loan signing of former PSV midfielder Zakaria Labyad.

The young Moroccan international joins from Sporting Lisbon on a 18-month loan deal, after failing to make an impact in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Labyad, 20, has only appeared in 20 games for Sporting since signing a five-year contract in Lisbon on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven in July 2012.

Eager to return to the Eredivisie, Labyad spoke to Voetbal International: “I am very happy and relieved that I return home to the Netherlands.

“I am very glad at the thought that I can once again, I can spend every day with my friends and family. I am ready to play and I hope to be selected quickly.”

Labyad could make his first appearance when Peter Bosz’s side travel to PEC Zwolle next Saturday evening.

Van Bommel to coach Dutch youth

Header-JongOranje

Former Dutch international warhorse Mark van Bommel is now set to battle in a new role as assistant head coach of the Oranje Under-17s.

20130513 - Mark van Bommel

After spending some time with the youths at PSV earlier this season, alongside former team-mates Ruud van Nistelrooy and Boudewijn Zenden, Van Bommel has already achieved his UEFA B coaching qualification and will join with the Under-17s as an assistant to head coach Maarten Stekelenburg (not the Fulham goalkeeper).

The 36-year-old Van Bommel hung up his boots at the end of last season after a championship-filled club career at AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven.

Making the announcement earlier today was Jelle Goes, the technical manager of the KNVB: “It’s fantastic that we can add Mark to the technical staff of the Under-17s.

“Mark has played both nationally and internationally at the highest level. The KNVB can utilise his experience in the development of this age group. In addition, Mark is at the beginning of his career as a coach and this is a good opportunity for him as a novice to gain experience.”

John set to wing his way into Ajax

Team-Ajax

Dutch newspaper Algameen Dagblad state that Eredivisie table-toppers Ajax are looking to bolster their attack with the loan signing of 21-year-old winger Ola John.

John is currently plying his trade in Portugal with Benfica, but is struggling to find a first team place and he has only featured in ten games so far this season in the Primeira Liga.

AD report that the two clubs have come to an agreement regarding the six-month loan deal, and John should arrive in Amsterdam until the end of the Eredivisie season.

John last played in Holland in 2012 with FC Twente, scoring nine goals in 46 games, before clinching a €9m move to Portugal in May that year. The Dutchman has netted just five times for the Portuguese giants in 59 appearances.

Frank de Boer’s Ajax side are set to compete in Turkey this weekend against Celtic, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor in the Antalya Cup friendly tournament.

Norwegian international to sign for Cardiff?

Team-Heerenveen

It’s the January transfer window and once again the transfer rumours are running rampant – but this one does seem to have some legs.

New Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer was spotted with Heerenveen midfield star Magnus Wolff Eikrem outside St James’ Park shortly after the Bluebirds’ 2-1 FA Cup victory over Newcastle United.

BdKKeTPCUAAehtU Solskjaers 1st buy? Ex Man United man Magnus Eikrem (Heerenveen) spotted at Newcastle v Cardiff

WHO IS MAGNUS WOLFF EIKREM?

At age 12, Eikrem attended one of Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s soccer schools and shortly after, he was signed as a schoolboy for his local team in Norway, Molde FK.

It is no coincidence that Solsjkaer has already gone on to manage the Heerenveen midfielder twice, at Manchester United reserves and at Molde. Eikrem signed for Manchester United on his 16th birthday before being managed by Solskjaer in the reserves in 2008.

Then in his first full managerial role, Solsjkaer was appointed manager of Molde in his native Norway in 2011, he brought the midfielder back to his home town club in the same month as his appointment

The pair helped Molde win two Norwegian Tippeligaen titles with Eikrem scoring six goals in 68 appearances under Solsjkaer’s leadership and winning the ‘Player of the Year’ award in his second season. Then just this past June, the new Cardiff boss sold Eikrem to Marco van Basten’s Heerenveen where the 23-year-old has scored twice in 13 appearances.

IF THE TRANSFER HAPPENS?

Obviously close friends; it now appears that Eikrem could be Solsjkaer’s first signing for Cardiff. Particularly when seen the player is seen in Newcastle watching a Cardiff game, while his club, Heerenveen are in Albufeira, Portugal at a winter training camp.

However, if the transfer happens, Cardiff City can expect a creative right-footed central midfielder who has been often compared to former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

A weakness could be his height, standing at just 5ft 8in, winning just two of 13 aerial duels for Heerenveen this season. Although, Eikrem is not a powerhouse, he is strong on the ball and his brain along with his rapid-fire decision making could prove to be a hit in the Premier League. Like a champion chess player, before accepting the pass, he knows what his next move is going to be, being very aware of team-mates movement around the pitch.

Eikrem’s quality precise passes is currently opening Eredivisie defences for fun, currently with a 79% success rate, making 362 of his 456 attempts. Also, look for the midfielder to hold his own in the tackling department; he is currently averaging 2.2 tackles per game, a total of 29.

As the picture above shows, it certainly looks like the young Norwegian could be on his way to Wales to play for Solsjkaer once again. He will join Jon Dahl Tomasson, Marcus Allback, Afonso Alves, Oussama Assaidi and Georgios Samaras in the long list of Heerenveen players sold to the English Premier League – but look to him to make a bigger impact that the majority of that list.

Sanders to step down at PSV

Team-PSV

PSV general manager Tiny Sanders is to step down on April 1st after four years in Eindhoven.

The 57-year-old announced on Friday evening during his annual New Year’s reception address at the Philips Stadion.

Last year PSV made a profit of €350,000 and he stated that he is leaving the club in great financial state. However, this is mainly due to sales of Kevin Strootman, Dries Mertens and Jeremain Lens this past summer which accumulated over €35million in transfer fees.

Tomasson unveiled as new Roda boss

Team-RodaJC

Today, Roda JC unveiled former Danish international striker Jon Dahl Tomasson as their new head coach.

The club’s official website announced this morning that the 37-year-old signs a contract until the summer of 2017. Tomasson leaves Eerste Divisie side Excelsior, where he had been assistant coach for two years before becoming head coach last July.

The ambitious Dane replaces Ruud Brood, dismissed last month after a poor run of results that has left the club in 15th spot, collecting 18 points in as many games.

So heading into the second half of the season Tomasson faces a tough relegation fight with the Kerkrade club, just three points off the bottom of the Eredivisie standings. His battle begins with a trip to Heerenveen on January 18th, whilst his first duty will be to strengthen his new squad in the transfer window.

A GLITTERING CAREER ON THE PITCH

Tomasson had a glittering career spanned over the course of 15 years, which ended in the Dutch league.

He began at his hometown club of Køge BK in 1992, helping them win consecutive promotions and his talents caught the eye of then Heerenveen manager Foppe de Haan. As an 18-year-old he captured a spot in the De Haan’s first team and scored a total of 37 goals in 78 appearances over three seasons.

After being named ‘Dutch Football Talent of the Year’ in 1996 he moved onto England but due to the lack of physical strength needed for the Premier League, he experienced a disappointing year with Newcastle United.

Tomasson returned to the Netherlands with Feyenoord and the move resulted in four successful campaigns for the Scandinavian. Under the tutelage of Leo Beenhakker, the Rotterdam side claimed an Eredivisie league championship in 1998/99. With Bert van Marwijk leading Tomasson to an UEFA Cup in 2001/02 which was Feyenoord’s first continental trophy in 26 years.

In the summer of 2002, Tomasson’s contract with Feyenoord was expiring, and he agreed a move on a free transfer to Serie A giants AC Milan. Three seasons in Italy saw the Dane playing his part winning a Serie A title and the Coppa Italia for the Rossoneri during his time in the San Siro.

Spells in the Bundesliga and Spain’s Primera Divison came next for the striker with Stuttgart and Villarreal before a return to the De Kuip. Despite experiencing many injuries restricting his amount of games, Tomasson still managed an impressive 20 goals in 37 league games to conclude his career.

With over 112 appearances for his country, Tomasson became Denmark’s all-time joint top goalscorer after he netted 52 goals.

After hanging up his boots, Tomasson moved into the training ground, initially as the assistant to head coach John Lammers at Excelsior. Leon Vlemmings took over the next summer as Tomasson supported the new manager at the Eerste Divisie outfit until the Dane found himself appointed as head coach last June.

Excelsior, with low finishes in the last few seasons, now sit in seventh place in the Eerste Divisie under Tomasson’s command. Roda have been quick to acknowledge Tomasson’s potential as a coach.

Roda are in major need of boost after experiencing no wins in their last seven Eredivisie games. Tomasson has admitted that he will look to play an attacking style and will most likely pin point 24-year-old Hungarian striker Krisztián Németh, a former Liverpool youth player, as a player to support.

Already shown signs that he can be a success as a manager, if Tomasson can turn Roda around, then the Kerkrade side could well be the springboard to have a magnificent career in the dugout, like the one he enjoyed on the field.

Vitesse capture another Chelsea loanee

Team-Vitesse

Vitesse Arnhem have loaned yet another Chelsea youngster to help their charge in the Eredivisie title race.

The 18-year-old Burkina Faso international, Bertrand Traoré, whom signed for Chelsea officially on January 1st, barely had time to unpack his bags as Blues boss Jose Mourinho has sent the midfielder onto the GelreDome until the end of the season.

A statement on the ChelseaFC.com said: “Traoré signed for Chelsea following a successful trial period with the club during the summer, and now heads to the Netherlands to gain first-team experience. Traoré will link up with a Vitesse side which is currently second in the Eredivisie, on the same points as leaders Ajax.”

Two further Chelsea youngsters on loan at Vitesse, English central defender Sam Hutchinson and French wideman Gaël Kakuta, have not made an impact in Arnhem so far this season and have been recalled to London.

WHO IS BERTRAND TRAORÉ?

Born in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in his home country of Burkina Faso, Traoré joined Chelsea’s youth academy in 2011 after making his international debut at just 15 years old.

Mourinho was impressed with the youngster after viewing his performances in youth matches, and decided to take him on the club’s pre-season tour of Asia. Traoré went on to star in three games of the tour, scoring twice and was a stand-out performer as the Londoners strolled to a 4-1 friendly win against a Singha All Stars XI in July.

Chelsea’s main struggle was obtaining a work permit for him – entering the UK on a student visa, the Blues had to wait until Traoré was 18 to meet the legal criteria.

In Asia, he was featured out wide, although he will possibly star as central attacking midfielder for Vitesse.

Although, he has been known to have problems with fitness levels at time-to-time, Traoré’s use of the ball is his main plus point. A very proficient passer with great range, he is not afraid to take an opponent on and burn him for pace. He will also often sting the goalkeepers’ gloves with fierce shots from long range.

Vitesse have once again picked up a great talent from Mourinho’s side, and expect the Burkina Faso international to be a success like his Chelsea team-mates Lucas Piazón and Christian Atsu have so far in Arnhem this season.
