Week 24 Eredivisie Report: Fulham loanee clinches PSV win

Header-EredivisieReport

PSV clinched their third win in succession to sit in fifth place on Friday night after a gritty 2-1 win over the plucky Heracles Almelo.

Friday 14th February 2014

PSV 2-1 HERACLES

The Philips Stadion pitch was in a terrible state due to heavy rain all day on Friday which left passing across the pitch very difficult, but it was an entertaining game.

The visitors though they had taken the lead after just four minutes of play, after Moroccan midfielder Iliass Bel Hassani had floated a ball over the top of the PSV defence to play in striker Mark Uth. Unfortunately for the German, on-loan from Heerenveen, the PSV high-line had caught him out and as the 22-year-old striker was smashing the ball past Jeroen Zoet, the referees’ assistant on his right had the flag up.

A minute later, the damp Eindhoven crowd were on their feet as their side took the lead. Memphis Depay latched onto a through ball from Jürgen Locadia and the young winger twisted and turned the Heracles defenders as he entered the box. After his first powerful attempt was parried by Remko Pasveer, Depay instinctively pounced on the rebound and coolly placed it into the corner out of the keeper’s reach.

The next twenty minutes or so turned into ‘The Memphis Depay Show’. Everything went through the twenty-year-old and although he is frustrating at times with his decision making, and easily annoys the PSV faithful, the player has clearly the skill and speed to go onto bigger things in the game.

After Depay tested the reactions of Pasveer a few more times, it was the turn of Zoet to be called into action on 23 minutes. The ball came out to Mike te Wierik on the right wing, and the defender whipped in a vicious looking ball towards the penalty spot. Awaiting the delivery was Uth again, he nodded a testing header towards goals, but Zoet came out on top and tipped over the bar.

Before half-time, the Heracles pressure paid off and Jan de Jonge saw his side level the score. The in-form Bryan Linssen was the goalscorer yet again, notching his seventh goal in his last seven appearances. After receiving the ball on the edge of the area, the midfielder spun onto his right foot, slipping the challenge of Jeffrey Bruma and lashing a right foot shot past the diving Zoet. The PSV ‘keeper had no chance of stopping. Linssen, a summer signing from the relegated VVV Venlo, will certainly being observed by some of Holland’s and Europe’s top scouts in this sparkling form, and may be on the mover again this summer.

Just past the hour-mark, PSV regained the lead and it was the on-loan Bryan Ruiz scoring his first goal for the club. The always impressive Jetro Willems attacked down the left-wing and got his cross past Te Wierik. The ball took a slight deflection and fell perfectly for the arriving Fulham man at the back post to nod home with ease.

PSV started to control the play but in the dying moments of the game they needed to rely on Zoet to clinch all three points. With just a minute of normal time remaining, the young goalie needed to pull off a tremendous double save denying Moroccan substitute Oussama Tannane first then saving Uth’s rebound with his legs.

Heracles should have gained a point in the final kick of the match when it was Zoet again to PSV’s rescue. Veteran striker Berry Powel, brought on as a late substitute, nodded the ball down in the six-yard area for Uth, but the German failed to connect properly and Zoet dived on the ball to save the game for the hosts.

Philip Cocu will be pleased with his side’s gritty performance and it is wins like this that may see them creep into the automatic European qualification places. PSV currently sit just six points off second place which is certainly not out of reach at this stage.

Heracles, on the other hand, sit in 11th place only seven points from the drop zone and will need to pick up some wins soon to steer themselves away from trouble.

EREDIVISIE WEEK 24 – FRIDAY’S PREVIEW & BETTING TIPS

Header-EredivisiePreview

Tipster Will Burns is back with his picks for the Eredivisie this Friday’s game and like all his tips, you will not see a ‘best bet’ under evens – good luck!

Friday 14th February

PSV-Heracles

PSV vs. HERACLES – 19:00

Heracles travel to Eindhoven on Friday night after claiming a hard-fought point against Cambuur last weekend. The hosts, PSV achieved a great 3-2 win at the Philips Stadion against title-chasing Twente.

I fully expect for PSV to notch another win on Friday evening, making it their third win in a row. Possibly returning will be Georginio Wijnaldum who last Monday notched in Jong PSV’s 3-0 win over Helmond Sport. The PSV captain has been out for five months with a back injury.

The best bet in this game will be ‘PSV to win to nil’ although PSV have conceded five goals in the last three games. I except them to win without Heracles notching.

BURNS’ BEST BET: PSV to win to nil (13/8 – BetVictor) – Click here to bet on this market

Midweek Eredivisie Report: Tadić rescues Twente’s point

Header-EredivisieReport

Wednesday 12th February 2014

FC GRONINGEN 1-1 FC TWENTE

The in-form Dušan Tadić scored the equaliser as Groningen held Twente to a 1-1 draw which meant the Enschede side missed the opportunity to move just two points behind league leaders Ajax.

The hosts ended a three-game losing streak and got off to the perfect start after Hungarian striker Krisztián Adorján, on-loan from Liverpool, gave Erwin van de Looi side the lead with only five minutes gone.

Tjaronn Chery played Hans Hateboer down the right-wing, and after the young full-back whipped in a cross to the back post the Hungarian rose to head towards goal. Twente defender Andreas Bjelland tried to clear of the line but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line. The Euroborg erupted with a sea of green and white celebrating.

For the visitors it took them most of the first-half to get into the game, but shortly before the interval full-back Dico Koppers found the unmarked Youness Mokhtar, whose shot was parried wide by goalkeeper Marco Bizot.

After the half-time team talks, both sides had chances but Twente eventually showed their position in the league and found the equaliser on 77 minutes. Kyle Ebecilio played a pass through to Luc Castaignos in the area and the young striker held off the challenge of Lorenzo Burnet to fire a ball across the goal.  Serbian midfielder Dušan Tadić was available on the edge of the six-yard box to fire home with his tenth goal of the season.

GRONINGEN: Bizot, Burnet, Botteghin, Kappelhof, Hateboer, Van Nieff, Lindgren, De Leeuw (Hiarlej 82), Chery, Kostic, Adorjan (Zivkovic 64).

SUBS NOT USED: Van der Lei, Kirm, Wijnaldum, Magnasco, Zeefuik.

EREDIVISIE MIDWEEK PREVIEW & BETTING TIPS

Header-EredivisiePreview

A re-arrangement from Week 20 sees FC Twente travel to Groningen on Wednesday evening to try and close the gap between themselves and league leaders Ajax.  How well does our tipster Will Burns think they’ll get on… read on and find out.

Wednesday 12th February

Groningen-Twente

FC GRONINGEN vs. FC TWENTE – 18:45

Twente can be within two points of top spot in the Eredivisie if they are successful in clinching all three points against 11th place FC Groningen.

A big blow to Groningen hopes on Wednesday will be the suspended Maikel Kieftenbeld after receiving a red card in Sunday’s derby defeat to Heerenveen. Twente coach Michel Jansen is expected to maintain with a 4-3-3 formation with the impressive Dušan Tadić in the attacking central role. On the wing, Youness Mokhtar and Quincy Promes will start to supply powerhouse striker Luc Castaignos.

The visitors have been victorious in all of their last six matches against Groningen in all competitions and I cannot see past them again here. PSV defeated Twente at the weekend but after Zwolle held Ajax it has give Twente a glimmer of hope of clinching another Eredivisie championship.

The best bet will be Twente to win at half-time and full-time at a great price of 13/8 at Betfair. Look for plenty goals to be scored and Twente leave the Euroborg just two points adrift of Ajax.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Twente HT/FT (13/8 – Betfair)

After five month absence, Wijnaldum returns

Team-PSV

After been out of action for five months, Georginio Wijnaldum returned tonight in Jong PSV’s Eerste Divisie clash with Helmond Sport.

Wijnaldum scoort bij rentree voor Jong PSV

The Dutch international scored after just 10 minutes in Jong PSV’s 3-0 win in first game since PSV’s 2-2 away draw against FC Twente on 14th September last year.

Wijnaldum has been suffering with back complaints since the UEFA Under-21 European Championship last summer in Israel. PSV coach Philip Cocu has experienced a poor campaign in all competitions and could have certainly done with having his club captain in the team.

The first team of PSV next host Heracles in the Eredivisie this weekend but that game may come too soon for Wijnaldum’s fitness. However, it may be more likely that he will feature in a few more Eerste Divisie games, starting with Jong PSV’s game at Telstar on Friday night.

Cocu will be hoping that within the next few weeks his creative playmaker will be back, in the team he starred so well for earlier this season before being out with the back injury.

Koeman open to Swansea job

Obviously thinking about his future after informing Feyenoord that he will not be extending his contract past this May, Ronald Koeman has admitted that he would be interested in managing in England next season.

Koeman has been linked with the vacant Swansea City job since Michael Laudrup was dismissed last week, but the Dutchman has denied he has held talks with Swans executives about taking over there.

One thing is for sure is that Koeman will not be leaving the Eredivisie side until the end of the current campaign.

After watching his side defeat NEC Nijmegen 5-2 on Saturday evening, in the post-match press conference, Koeman told De Telegraaf: “These reports are strange, I have already agreed my agent here that he will sort out the options I have. He will do the homework at the moment and that is all.

“If that leads to something, I might be ready for it. But for now I will just wait and see what happens. I don’t think anything will happen right now.

“I think it will be April or May before I can clarify anything about my future. At this stage, there has been no contact with Swansea City.”

Week 23 Eredivisie Report: Zwolle hold Ajax

Header-EredivisieReport

A crazy day in the Dutch top flight that ends a crazy week of games with goals galore. Ajax had the chance to pull away from the chasing pack in the Eredivisie title race but they were held to a 1-1 draw to a PEC Zwolle side who could have stole all three points today.

Sunday 9th February 2014

HERACLES 1-1 CAMBUUR

Heracles and Cambuur shared the points in the opening game of Sunday, it was a late goal for the home side that shattered Cambuur hopes of clearing themselves out of relegation trouble for now.

It was a slow start to the game in the Polman Stadion with both sides failing to create any chances in the opening twenty minutes of the match but the away side took the lead after 23 minutes gone.

A long ball forward was latched on by Cambuur’s on-loan striker Elvis Manu, and the Feyenoord man held off the challenges of Bart Schenkeveld and with Jeroen Veldmate failing to get across in time, the 20-year-old used great composure to finish to give the visitors the lead.

Heracles had their chances but no more so than the horrendous miss of the on-loan Mikhail Rosheuvel in the 47th minute. A cross came in from the left where the AZ man dived for a header which flicked up and smacked off the crossbar from just four yards out. If he had made the choice to stick a boot on it instead he possibly would have scored.

Rosheuval had a better effort a few minutes later, latching on a long ball, and taking Lucas Bijker out of the challenge with his great first touch but his shot was straight at Leonard Nienhuis who parried the shot away.

It was end to end stuff as a few minutes later, Marcel Ritzmaier, on-loan from PSV, smashed a 20 yard shot off the opposite crossbar.

The points were snatched away from the visitors as Heracles got the goal to grab a point with just a minute of the game remaining, a corner was nodded home by Mike te Wierik.

TEAMS

HERACLES: Pasveer, Veldmate (Powel 85), Davidson, Schenkeveld, Te Wierik, Cziommer, Rienstra, Bel Hassani, Bruns (Tannane 47), Uth, Rosheuvel (Amoah 79).

GOALS: Manu 23.

BOOKINGS: Bijker.

PEC ZWOLLE 1-1 AJAX

The 12,500 present inside the IJsseldelta Stadion will wonder how Ajax got out of the stadium with a point after an action-packed game on Sunday afternoon.

Ron Jans can be proud of his PEC Zwolle side who more than held their own against an Ajax side that were frustrating in front of goal once De Boer’s men took a 1-0 lead after just seven minutes.

Central defender Joel Veltman made a marauding run down the right and after skipping two challenges, Joost Broerse brought the defender down. The in-form Lasse Schöne whipped in a free-kick into the front post where Davy Klaassen nodded in the opening goal.

Siem de Jong really struggled today and must have misplaced his shooting boots as on 21 minutes he produced a terrible miss by his standards. Totally unmarked, the Dutchman volleyed over the bar after Ricardo van Rhijn had supplied the perfect cross for him.

Quarter of an hour later, the score was level. Winter transfer window signing Thanasis Karagounis played a defence splitting through ball onto Guyon Fernandez. The on-loan striker took advantage when Ajax ‘keeper Kenneth Vermeer failed to collect and the Feyenoord man finished in the empty goal.

Diederik Boer saved Zwolle a few times in the match and no more important save then just before the interval when he denied Veldman’s header from the back post after Daley Blind crossed from deep. It was a point blank stop that got the crowd cheering louder than the Fernandez goal.

Ajax really picked up the pace after the break and forced save after save out of Boer. Schune, De Jong and Bojan all deprived of a goal due to the hands of the 6ft 4inch stopper.

Zwolle could see Ajax tiring and on 69 minutes, Jans will wonder how his team did not take the lead. After Fred Benson smashed his shot from outside the area against the foot of the post, the rebound fell perfectly to Jesper Drost, but even with Vermeer out of position the 21-year-old midfielder lashed his shot off the crossbar and out. Frank de Boer gave out a sigh of relief on the touchline.

With 12 minutes to go, Zwolle should have definitely clinched all three points but De Boer can thank Veldman for saving the single point. Karagounis and the onrushing Vermeer ran onto a free ball and the Greek midfielder beat the ‘keeper to the ball. The signing from Atromitos played in Fernandez and as the striker was pulling back to fire the trigger, Veldman dived in and nicked the ball away at the right time.

On the final whistle, Jans was all smiles and De Boer was miserable but he should be smiling, as Ajax are now five points clear at the top of the league and he should feel relieved that he got out of the IJsseldelta with something. However, second placed FC Twente have a game on hand against a poor Groningen side on Wednesday night.

TEAMS

ZWOLLE: Boer, Gravenbeek, Van Polen, Broerse, Van Hintum, Klich, Drost, Karagounis (Nijland 91), Saymak, Mahmudov (Thomas 75), Fernandez (Benson 64).

RKC WAALWIJK 5-2 FC UTRECHT

In a game that had virtually everything RKC put Jan Wouters in major trouble as they beat his Utrecht side by five goals to two.

The Utrecht manager is now under major pressure after seeing his side slip down to 14th in the league and just three points off the relegation places.

The goal fest began after an error from Yassin Ayoub played in Romeo Castelen. Ayoub flicked a header backwards thinking he was playing it to safety, but Castelen lashed a first-time half-volley that dipped under Robbin Ruiter’s crossbar after just eight minutes of play.

The game was tied four minutes later as Jens Toornstra converted a penalty after on-loan defender Prince-Désir Gouano was punished for a handball in the area.

The scoring stopped until 11 minutes from time, where the game got incredibly wild with five goals in just fourteen fun-filled minutes. Daniel de Ridder gave the hosts the lead with a 25 yard strike after the Utrecht defence failed to close him down.

Utrecht collapsed and a minute later, Kenny Anderson added a third to the tally. Straight from the kick-off Utrecht’s Steve de Ridder made it 3-2 with a wonderful solo effort.

On 86 minutes, Utrecht had a glorious chance to level the game to 3-3 after Jonas Ivens was deemed to handballed Steve de Ridder shot on goal, however, Toornstra smashed his spot-kick off the post. It got for Toornstra with just a minute of normal remaining, French striker Jean-David Beauguel latched on a Toornstra backpass and made it 4-2.

Luxembourg international Aurélien Joachim made it five in third minute of stoppage time and Beauguel and Daniel de Ridder combined to play the striker in. The Luxembourgian rounded Ruiter and  slotted home.

Utrecht need to get points and quick and in all honesty, Jan Wouters might be lucky to still be on the bench next weekend when they visit AZ Alkmaar.

TEAMS

FC GRONINGEN 1-3 HEERENVEEN

In the ‘Derby van het Noorden’, a zany six minutes of madness cost Erwin van de Looi’s Groningen the game in the final game of Week 23.

Early on Kenny Otigba and Maikel Kieftenbeld had fouls unpunished; however, they both saw the red card before the full-time whistle.

The home side looked good going forward and should have took the lead on 26 minutes when Eric Botteghin emerged forward and drove a powerful low shot towards the Heerenveen goal. Unfortunately for the Brazilian defender, Swedish keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt pulled off a great save to tip wide.

As always Heerenveen are the most dangerous on the counter attack and today proved no different. On 33 minutes, straight from a Marco Bizot goal-kick, Marten de Roon headed back up the field into the feet of Alfred Finnbogason. The Icelander fired a ball forward for Rajiv van la Parra to run onto, the young winger then lashed the ball past the stunned Bizot for the opener.

Groningen fell to pieces and three minutes later, they found themselves two goals down. Again on the counter, Van la Parra and Hakim Ziyech combining with one-twos until Ziyech finished.

Things were getting messy for Van de Looi’s men and it was 3-0 and they were down to ten men on 39 minutes. Alfred Finnbogason skipped past Bizot and was ready to turn and finish into the goal until Kieftenbeld saved with his hands on the goal-line, the striker converted the resulting spot-kick.

Referee Bas Nijhuis had to dish out the red again with just under twenty minutes of time remaning which level the teams up. As Groningen’s Michael de Leeuw was running through on goal, Kenny Otigba was last defender and the Hungarian seemed to clip the midfielder’s heels.

Groningen grabbed a 86th minute consolation goal after Genaro Zeefuik was felled by Stefano Marzo in the area and Michael de Leeuw put away the penalty kick. Marco van Basten was angry with two minutes remaning after his side had a penalty claim waved away but in all fairness the game was for him after 39 minutes. Heerenveen leapfrog back into fifth at PSV’s expense.

TEAMS

GRONINGEN: Bizot, Burnet (Hateboer 46), Botteghin, Kappelhof, Wijnaldum, Chery, Kieftenbeld, Van Nieff (Zeefuik 79), Kirm, De Leeuw, Kostic (Lindgren 46).

Week 23 Eredivisie Report: PSV stun Twente, Feyenoord hit five

Header-EredivisieReport

A great day for Feyenoord, PSV and AJAX fans as FC Twente were felled by the Eindhoven side 3-2 to help Ajax out who could go seven points clear at the top with a win at PEC Zwolle. For Ronald Koeman’s men, it was a tremendous home performance smashing five past Anton Janssen’s NEC side.

Saturday 8th February 2014

PSV 3-2 FC TWENTE

FC Twente’s title hopes were stalled by a resurgent PSV side in a fantastic five-goal thriller on Saturday evening.

It was a dream start for PSV who exploded out the blocks and took the lead after just seven minutes. Colombian right-back Santiago Arias, a summer signing from Sporting Lisbon, bombed down the right-wing, cut inside the box, shrugged off Andreas Bjelland to fire past Nick Marsman in goal.

Both sides played with high-octane pressure all the way up the pitch and on 23 minutes, PSV broke through the Twente defence again. Memphis Depay whipped in a pin-point cross to meet the head of Jürgen Locadia who got in front of Bjelland to double the lead. The Eindhoven crowd was in raptures, and the feel good factor was back in the Philips Stadion.

The second goal fired some life into Twente who could possibly feel their title challenge slipping away. Just past the half-hour mark, Serbian playmaker Dušan Tadić, on-fire as of late with 9 goals and 11 assists this season, nearly reduced the deficit. He intercepted a ball in the final third of the pitch and skipped the challenge of Jorrit Hendrix and smashed a shot from 25 yards that rattled Jeroen Zoet’s crossbar.

The back and forth action returned in PSV’s favour with a decent chance for Depay on 37 minutes. Breaking on the counter has become a specialty for the young PSV side and from a Twente corner, Depay found himself through on goal, but the winger saw his effort creep wide.

Robbert Schilder’s quick throw-in lead them to getting a goal back on 40 minutes. High up the pitch, Schilder caught the PSV defence asleep as the ball was thrown into Quincy Promes’s path and holding off Jeffrey Bruma’s attention, Promes blasted the ball past Zoet for 2-1.

After the break, even though they still had the lead PSV did not sit-back and searched for a third and in the 52nd minute they had the goal. Left-back Jetro Willems scored the goal of the night, emerging from the left-wing with the ball and finely curling a low shot from the edge of the area past the scrambling Marsman that had misjudged the shot.

The scoring was not finished and nor were Twente as we saw the fifth and final goal on 68 minutes. PSV failed to clear a corner and Kyle Ebecilio took advantage a prod home. The two goal conceded by PSV today will the type of errors that Phillip Cocu and Guus Hiddink will want to cut out in future games.

Twente pressed hard to level the game but to no avail and in the final stages of the games, the Phillips Stadion maybe said goodbye to Tim Matavz, whose rumoured €8m transfer to Rubin Kazan could happen sometime this week.

The Eindhoven crowd were jubilant and it was a great win for Cocu’s side that took them to fifth in the Eredivisie standings with Heerenveen (6th) still to play in Sunday’s games.

NAC BREDA 2-0 RODA JC

NAC Breda jumped up to ninth placed with a 2-0 home win over Roda, who slip back into the bottom three.

It was an even game but Roda failed to make their chances into goals and it was NAC that nearly broke the deadlock just before the hour mark. Mats Seuntjens lofted a perfect ball over the top of the Roda defenders, and the onrushing Rydell Poepon stretched out for the ball but his effort scraped past the post.

NAC finally gained the lead on 73 minutes through substitute Adnane Tighadouini. Poepon knocked the ball down into Tighadouini’s path, who avoided Timo Letschert’s challenge to fire home.

The game was killed off two minutes before full-time by Stipe Perica. Also a substitute, the Croatian chased a ball down the right-wing in a tussle with the emerging Roda goalkeeper Filip Kurto. Perica won the race and got the ball before the ‘keeper and slid the ball home into the empty net.

GO AHEAD EAGLES 2-1 AZ ALKMAAR

Dick Advocaat’s AZ side have been in good form winning defeating Groningen and Vitesse in the last seven days, but after a poor performance on Saturday, they fell to Go Ahead Eagles 2-1.

The Eagles took the lead with the goal of the day in the Eredivisie. Full-back Doke Schmidt found himself free to try a daring long-range shot from 40 yards out that gave Esteban no chance of stopping, hitting the post and into the net.

The 7,938 crowd inside the Adelaarshorst was loud and imposing as usual and AZ failed to get the ball down and play. Swedish striker Denni Avdić replaced the injured Aron Johansson up front and the 25 year-old failed to make an impact for Advocaat’s men.

The three points were clinched late on by a great counter attacking goal as AZ pressed for an equaliser. After a Stephan Andersen kick from the opposite end, Jeffrey Rijsdijk retrieved and dished out the ball to Jarchinio Antonia who was racing through on goal. The 23-year-old sidestepped Esteban and defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw could not stop the effort on the line.

Roy Beerens  notched a consolation goal for AZ, but it was a bad day at the office for the Alkmaar club.

Ronald Koeman’s Feyenoord hit five past NEC as Jean-Paul Boëtius and Graziano Pellè ran riot all over Anton Janssen’s side.

The away side took the lead but should have had a goal earlier in the first minute if it were not for Feyenoord keeper Erwin Mulder. Michael Higdon, an aerial threat all game, knocked the ball down into the path of Christoph Hemlein. The German lashed a volley into the top corner but a strong palm from Mulder saved his side.

However, ten minutes later he could not stop another volleyed effort. Danish midfielder Søren Rieks opened the scoring after Higdon had again nodded the ball down into the Dane’s path and hit the first-time shot that looped over Mulder’s reach and into the goal.

Minutes later, John Goossens nearly scored the equaliser from a free-kick on the edge of the area but Karl-Johan Johnsson tipped the effort over.

The score was levelled up on 26 minutes after some great play from Boëtius. The winger played the lovely ball through to the overlapping Miquel Nelom on the left, the full-back swung a low cross into the back post where Lex Immers arrived to tap home.

Within nine minutes, Feyenoord has turned the game on its head with their second goal. Daryl Janmaat and Immers combined until the right-back found himself inside the area to pull the ball back from the byline to Graziano Pellè to make it two for the home side.

It should have been 3-1, on 39 minutes after the troublesome Boëtius pirouetted in the area and was subsequently brought down by NEC captain Ryan Koolwijk. Pellè stepped up but Johnsson saved with ease to the keep the score at 2-1 at half-time.

In the second-half, Koeman’s side ran riot. On 55 minutes, Jean-Paul Boëtius got a deserved goal tapping in an Immers cross at the back stick. Then the goal of the game came four minutes later.

Again, Nelom bombing down the left, crossed into the penalty at medium height. Italian hitman Pellè got in front of his marker Lasse Nielsen, and perfectly volleyed beyond Johnsson. A textbook goal that even gained the applause of the visiting fans.

He action was far from over as the visitors were awarded a penalty on 64 minutes after referee Reinold Wiedemeijer has adjudged Nelom fouled Hemlein in the area. This time, Rieks fired the ball into Mulder hands and the score stayed 4-1.

The final nail in the coffin for NEC came on 78 minutes and it was the impressive Boëtius grabbing his team’s fifth and his second after a great counter attack.

A great performance for Koeman’s side that moves ahead of Vitesse into third on goal difference.

EREDIVISIE WEEK 23 PREVIEW & BETTING TIPS

Header-EredivisiePreview

In the midweek games, our top tipster Will Burns hit a four bets out of nine at massive prices to make a huge profit (13/8, 13/5, 11/4 and 19/10) and last night hit ANOTHER one at 6/5. He is back with his picks for the Eredivisie this coming weekend and like all his tips, you will not see a ‘best bet’ under evens – good luck!

Saturday 8th February

PSV-Twente

PSV vs. FC TWENTE – 17:45

With both sides coming into this one on the back of good wins, it sure proves to a be a great game when second-placed Twente travel to the Phillips Stadion to face PSV on Saturday evening.

The installation of Guus Hiddink as Phillip Cocu’s advisor will only help the Eindhoven’s patchy season so far but Twente are in great form and are desperate to close the gap between themselves and Ajax.  A win for Twente in this would sit them only a point off the top.

I believe a feel good factor could be back in Eindhoven for this one but Twente could be too strong for Cocu’s men. The best bet would be to sit on the fence and settle for a draw.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Draw (5/2 – BetVictor)

NAC-RodaJC

NAC BREDA vs. RODA JC – 18:45

It’s a relegation battle in Breda. NAC missed the chance to pick up three vital points in Nijmegen on Wednesday night and with just two wins from their last nine matches, they now find themselves just four points above the relegation zone.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Roda find themselves in the drop zone but only due to a poor goal-difference. In the past five trips, two draws and three defeats does not fill you full of confidence when away from home but they do have a young prodigy on their hands who could fire them up the league.

Of course, I am talking about Guus Hupperts. He is the main reason I’m betting that Roda could grab the win.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Roda to win (28/11 – Unibet)

GAE-AZ

GO AHEAD EAGLES vs. AZ ALKMAAR – 18:45

Dick Advocaat lead AZ to back-to-back wins last week, hosting Groningen and at Vitesse which gives them three wins from their first four games of the new year has revitalised their season.

The Eagles are yet to win in 2014 but have good form, one losing once in the last five games at Adelaarshorst but I see AZ’s firepower of Aron Johansson, 13 goals in 23 games being too strong for Go Ahead.  Take AZ to win at 11/10.

BURNS’ BEST BET: AZ to win (11/10 – BetVictor & WilliamHill)

Feyenoord-NEC

FEYENOORD vs. NEC NIJMEGEN– 19:45

Feyenoord had a great 2-1 away win to Roda midweek with Lex Immers and Samuel Armenteros getting involved in the goals, with Ronald Koeman not relying on Graziano Pellè notching.

NEC are undefeated in 2014 with two wins and three draws but four of those games have been played at home, the only away game was a tremendous 1-1 draw in Arnhem against Vitesse.

Could NEC gain another draw on Saturday night? Possibly… To play it safe I am going to say there are going to be goals in this one and plenty of them. Get on Over 4.5 Goals at Coral at 2/1 for the best bet of the day.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Over 4.5 Goals (2/1 – Coral)

Sunday 9th February

Heracles-Cambuur

HERACLES vs. SC CAMBUUR– 11:30

Sunday’s set of games opens with Cambuur’s visit to Heracles. The hosts smashed ADO 3-0 on Tuesday so they will be full of confidence. Cambuur held their own against PSV even though they let a 1-0 lead slip to be defeated by Cocu’s men.

On the road, Cambuur’s form is not great, losing six out of the last seven away league matches. Heracles have been in decent form at home (losing only one in five) due to the in-form Bryan Linssen firing off all cylinders, scoring six in six.

The best bet will be Heracles to be winning at half-time and continuing on to defeat Cambuur at the final whistle.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Heracles HT/FT (3/2 – Ladbrokes)

PEC-Ajax

PEC ZWOLLE vs. AJAX– 13:30

The resurgent PEC Zwolle go in search of a fourth straight win when they host league leader Ajax on Sunday.

Ron Jans’ men began the season in great form, winning their first four games and led the league for almost a month but a run of just one league win in 15 put pay to any title aspirations. Ajax started poorly for have clawed back and now top the league with a four point lead.

I predict this to be the game of the week and a real test for Ajax, with the game ending in a score draw.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Draw (13/10 – Bet Victor)

RKC-Utrecht

RKC WAALWIJK vs. FC UTRECHT– 13:30

Even though Jan Wouter’s Utrecht have won six of their last seven matches against Waalwijk in all competitions, they have lost six of their last seven away matches in league. Utrecht are truly in horrible form at the moment even though they clinched a great point at home to Ajax last weekend.

Erwin Koeman’s RKC had a great week last week, defeating PSV on Sunday and drawing away to Go Ahead on Wednesday and need more points on the board to improve their position.

Utrecht also need points to and since loan signing Juan Agudelo has arrived from Stoke,  he has started in back-to-back games alongside Steven de Ridder up front. Agudelo and De Ridder have impressed and I feel they could be the two help Wouters clinch a win.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Utrecht to win (12/5 – Coral)

Groningen-Heerenveen

FC GRONINGEN vs. HEERENVEEN – 15:30

The final game of the weekend sees Marco van Basten take his Heerenveen side to Groningen. Both teams will be looking to bounce back after midweek defeats as Groningen lost narrowly away to Ajax and Heerenveen at home against FC Twente.

Groningen were incredibly unlucky against Ajax on Thursday with a late goal snatching a great point away from their grasp. With Hakim Ziyech and Alfred Finnbogason, Heerenveen are always dangerous but I feel Groningen could win this game especially if Filip Kostic can put in a performance like he did against Ajax. BetVictor are offering 6/5 for the home win and I see this as the best bet.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Groningen to win (6/5 – BetVictor)

From Brisbane to Breda – Interview: NAC’s Alistair Quinn

Header-Interview

If you could get a direct flight from Brisbane, Australia to Breda, Netherlands it would take you 21 hours to reach your destination, without the direct flight you looking at nearly 48 hours. Of course, you would be travelling over 10,000 miles and for one young man he’s glad he took the trip. Today, Total Dutch Football talks to NAC Breda’s Alistair Quinn.

NAC Breda - Alistair Quinn

The 20-year-old Australian is currently starring for the Jong NAC Breda side in the Beloften Eredivisie and making great strides towards the NAC first team. Will Burns questions the young full-back regarding his past, life in the Netherlands so far and what the future holds for him.

THE Q & A

TDF: First things first… How did you get involved in football?

AQ: Love for football runs in my family, so it was the only sport I was ever going to play. My Grandad helped establish my local football club (Mt Gravatt Hawks) in the early 1960’s and that’s where I began playing at the age of 6.

TDF: Which club did you support as a boy and who were your heroes?

AQ: Liverpool. My best friend in primary school was a very passionate Liverpool supporter and we always used to watch the Merseyside derbies together at his house. That’s probably why Steven Gerrard was without a doubt my main footballing hero growing up!

20140208 - Brisbane Roar - Alistair Quinn

TDF: You have appeared for Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers at youth level? How did play for those club come about?

AQ: I progressed through the system in Queensland to be selected in the QAS (Queensland Academy of Sport). Roar typically sources their youth players from QAS so I was asked for a trial when I was 16 and was successful. I played for Roar from 2009-2012 in the NYL team and the next season I played for WSW.

TDF: And you also appeared at youth level for the Australia national side? How was that experience?

AQ: It was a great experience. It’s always an honour to wear the green and gold and definitely a career highlight of mine. I was lucky enough to travel to Japan and play against teams like Mexico, so it was an unbelievable experience.

TDF: I understand you can play in defence and midfield? Which do you feel more at home with?

AQ: Growing up I always played in the midfield, but when I started at Roar the coaches thought I was better suited to play fullback. I am still comfortable playing in the midfield and out wide, but fullback is where I feel more at home now.

TDF: Brisbane is a long, long way from Breda. How did the move to the Netherlands materialise?

AQ: I had been in Scotland trialing (Queen of the South and Hamilton Academicals) and things didn’t quite work out for me there. At around that time I contacted my now agent and we discussed some possibilities for me. What my game was like, what I wanted to achieve in football and we decided that the best thing to do would be to try and play in the Netherlands.

So I went over to the Netherlands where I prepared for club trials by training with my agent’s partners. Following a month or so of training I was able to secure an initial short trial with NAC Breda. I did well in the first session and they invited me to play a game for their reserves.

I had a good game and even scored a goal from left fullback. That led to them offering me a trial until the end of the year.

I performed well both at training and other friendly matches and did enough to earn a contract with the reserves side which started in January.

TDF: How are you finding living in Holland and are you learning to speak Dutch?

AQ: I am thoroughly enjoying living in Holland. Culturally it is quite similar to Australia and most people here are pretty laid back and friendly. Another positive is that almost everyone is fluent in English. I picked up all the football related words and phrases pretty quickly, but I may take a while until I am speaking Dutch fluently! I am getting Dutch lessons soon, so hopefully I will be speaking it well by the end of the season!

TDF: What were your first impressions of NAC Breda, anything you expected?

AQ: Before I started at NAC I was told that it’s a warm club with passionate supporters. Since I have been with the club everyone has welcomed me with open arms, which has been great. Graham Arnold and Tony Vidmar are still remembered fondly by the staff at the club as well and I hope to follow in their footsteps.

TDF: What are your aims for this season and beyond at the club?

AQ: My aims at the moment are to continue improving and developing as a player. I’ve learned so much in my short time here and I want to continue growing. The reserve coach at NAC, Anton Joore has been fantastic and has really been a massive help and influence on me.

With my continued improvement I feel like I’m on the cusp of beginning to train with the first team and that’s my goal over the next few weeks. Hopefully once that happens I can train well with the first team, to the point that I could possibly get a game in the Eredivisie by the end of the season.

Even if I’m not able to do that, I really want to be able to show the club that I have what it takes to play first team football so that hopefully I can secure a first team contract for next season. That’s my ultimate goal for the next few months.

Beyond that I’d like to establish myself as a first team player at NAC into the future and then play well enough to hopefully force myself into the calculations for the Olyroos and eventually the Socceroos.

Having represented the Under 20s, I would love the opportunity to put on the Green and Gold again and I know the only way I can make that happen is to continue working hard here, developing my game and becoming a better footballer.

Week 23 Eredivisie Report: Vitesse held by ADO 0-0

Header-EredivisieReport

Vitesse are virtually out of the title picture for this season after being held 0-0 by a ADO Den Haag side looking a lot more organised under caretaker manager Henk Fraser.

Friday 7th February 2014

VITESSE 0-0 ADO DEN HAAG

Even though they held 74% of the possession, third placed Vitesse had to settle for a point against bottom side ADO Den Haag on Friday night.

It was an aggressive affair as both clubs are desperate for points for different reasons. ADO sacked Maurice Steijn in midweek and taking over, Henk Fraser will appreciate his start with an excellent point.

Poor finishing let the hosts down failing to score with 15 attempts and they best chances coming at the end of the game. ADO should have took the lead on 67 minutes if not for Vitesse ‘keeper Piet Velthuizen. Great play from Roland Alberg and Mike van Duinen set-up Danny Bakker free in the area, and the 19-year-old fired at goal only for Velthuizen to stick out a leg in a last ditch attempt to save and the gamble paid off. Great instinct from the goalkeeper.

In the dying moments of the game, substitute Mike Havanaar hit the post with an effort with ADO ‘keeper Gino Coutinho tipping over Frank van der Struijk’s headed effort a minute later.

Peter Bosz has to wonder whether or not his side in still in the title race, but Fraser will be the happier of the two coaches, with a point to help in the relegation struggle.

TEAMS

VITESSE: Velthuizen, Van Aanholt, Van der Struijk, Kashia, Van der Heijden, Vejinovic (Labyad 47), Pröpper, Traoré (Havenaar 67), Piazón (Djurdjevic 89), Atsu.

SUBS NOT USED: Room, Achenteh, Mori, Kazaishvili.

GOALS: None.

BOOKINGS: Van Aanholt, Van der Struijk, Pröpper, Labyad.

ADO: Coutinho, Wormgoor, Beugelsdijk, Zuiverloon, Malone, Meijers, Holla, Bakker, Alberg, Van Duinen, Schet.

SUBS NOT USED: Zwinkles, Kanon, Merencia, Buwalda, Van Haaren, Kramer, Cabral.

GOALS: None.

BOOKINGS: Alberg, Bakker, Beugelsdijk.

Cocu pleased that Hiddink is to help PSV

Team-PSV

Obviously experiencing a difficult season, PSV head coach Phillip Cocu is delighted that legendary manager Guus Hiddink returns to the club to lend a hand in a consultancy role for the remainder of the season.

During Friday’s press conference ahead of PSV’s match against FC Twente, Cocu stated : “Guus is a PSV icon. He will be very valuable to PSV with all his experience at the highest level. Guus and I have been in regular touch by phone over the past few months. After his time in Russia, Guus enjoyed a brief break. I am happy that Guus will regularly be present at De Herdgang for the remainder of the season to help out myself and the technical staff.”

Hiddink will be taking a backseat at the Phillips Stadion, and will not undermine Cocu’s position as head coach: “He will be in attendance at least once per week at De Herdgang, but he will not be present on the bench during games.”

Hiddink was present at PSV’s training on Friday morning and Cocu stated his impact was evident from the start: “You immediately see that players approach him and ask for his advice. I learned a lot from him myself as well during my active career. It would not be smart to turn someone like Guus down if he offers to help out. His arrival does not have any effect on the current technical staff.”

In what has been a difficult season for PSV, its manager and its fans, the arrival of Guus Hiddink can only help spur the team on to try and achieve the best position possibly in the Eredivisie. They currently sit 15 points off leaders Ajax, but only eight off a top four finish, so reaching a top four finish will be achievable but things need to change immediately.

EREDIVISIE WEEK 23 FRIDAY PREVIEW & BETTING TIP

Header-EredivisiePreview

In the midweek games, our top tipster Will Burns hit a four bets out of nine at massive prices to make a huge profit (13/8, 13/5, 11/4 and 19/10). He is back with his picks for the Eredivisie this coming weekend and like all his tips, you will not see a ‘best bet’ under evens – good luck!

Friday 7th February

Vitesse-ADO

VITESSE vs. ADO DEN HAAG – 19:00

After the midweek defeat to AZ Alkmaar, Peter Bosz’ Vitesse know they desperately need a win against ADO on Friday night to keep up with Ajax and Twente in the title race.

Bosz has a full strength squad at his disposal apart from the suspended Kelvin Leerdam who picked up his seventh yellow card of the season against AZ. Frank van der Struijk is expected to replace him in the starting eleven. ADO have a caretaker manager installed this week after Maurice Steijn sacking on Wednesday. Henk Fräser takes over and he may not have picked a worse game to try and turnaround the clubs fortunes.

I can see Vitesse dominating the game and ADO having little if any chances. The best bet with some value could be choosing NO to Both Teams To Score which PaddyPower.com is offering 6/5 one side can keep a clean sheet.

BURNS’ BEST BET: Both Teams to Score – NO (6/5 – PaddyPower)
