Champions League: Ajax’s goal struggles means unders is a safe bet

Wednesday night sees Ajax host Dynamo Kiev in the next round of their Champions League qualification. Will Burns thinks Erik ten Hag’s men may struggle to find the net at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Daley Blind Ajax

Ajax vs. Dynamo Kiev

Wednesday, 20:00BST – Live on BT Sport 2

In another massive night for Dutch football, Ajax face Ukrainian Premier League runners-up Dynamo Kiev in the final round of Champions League qualification. Erik ten Hag’s men have already dispatched Sturm Graz and Standard Liege and a win over two legs against Kiev will go a long way to help the UEFA coefficient for Dutch football.

Last December, on the release of the new UEFA rankings, it was declared that the champions of the Eredivisie would not automatically qualify for the Champions’ League group stages. The Dutch are currently 14th in the UEFA rankings behind neighbours Belgium and the likes of Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland who arguably host weaker leagues.

The country and Ajax desperately need group stage qualification at the least and the Amsterdammers have pulled out all the stops this summer to make this happen. Big money signings Dušan Tadić and the returning Daley Blind put out a real statement of intent by Ajax, who brought in a total of four players for a big sum of €41m.

Although an abundance of talent is at Ten Hag’s disposal this is no easy route to the group stage for his side. In Atlético-esque fashion, Aleksandr Khatskevich’s side are masters of the 1-0 win. Out of all five domestic games this season, four in the league and one Super Cup final, they have won all five games by the 1-0 score line. Yes you did read that correctly – all five domestic games this season have ended in a 1-0 win for Dynamo.

Unbelievably they could have added another to the list in the away leg of the last Champions League qualifying round had Slavia Prague not scored a 95th minute penalty and that goal is the only goal they have conceded so far all season.

If we combine that with Ajax’s struggles to find the net in their two Eredivisie game so far, this will be a very tough contest for Ten Hag’s men. I envisage a cautious game that Ajax will find real difficulty breaking the Ukrainians down. Backing Under 2.5 Goals looks a sure bet and that is my recommendation in this match.

Eerste Divisie: Stegeman makes an flying start at Go Ahead Eagles

Header-EersteDivisieReport

The first week of the Eerste Divisie is complete and as usual it was a weekend full of goals with only one goalless draw across the fixtures. Will Burns is on hand to describe the action.

Image result for gino bosz

The big winners this week were Go Ahead Eagles who thrashed Jong FC Utrecht by five goals. It was the dream start for new coach John Stegeman as Richard van der Venne notched the opener on 22 minutes and defender Gino Bosz doubled the scoring by half-time. Thomas Verheijdt, Maarten Pouwels and Paco van Moorsel completed the rout after the break to send the De Adelaarshorst faithful home optimistic about the new campaign ahead.

On Monday night, Almere City defeated Jong AZ as the era of Michele Santoni began. The Italian left his role as Technical Coach for Cagliari in the summer to up sticks to the Netherlands and began life with a 3-2 win. It was eventful game that saw Almere three goals to the good before half-time with goals from Niek Vossebelt, Tim Receveur and Stijn Meijer. Almere left-back Moustpha Seck was shown red for a foul in the area and AZ’s Jelle Duin missed the spot-kick. AZ got a goal back against the ten-men through Tijani Reijnders and Ferdy Druijf scored in stoppgae time but there’s where the comeback ended.

In the Eindhoven derby, Jong PSV came from behind to dispatch FC Eindhoven 2-1 at De Herdgang. The visitors took an early lead when Siebe van der Heyden rose like a salmon to beat Dirk Abels to head home a 6th minute free-kick. However, Zakaria Aboukhlal equalised in first-half stoppage to level the game up with a long range effort that took a deflection. Full-back Jordan Teze found himself in unfamiliar territory to hit PSV’s winner.

Former Eredivisie champions FC Twente had a successful start to the campaign at home to fellow relegated side Sparta Rotterdam. German loanee striker Ulrich Bapoh notched after ten minutes played but former Nottingham Forest target man Lars Veldwijk equalised in the 16th. Tom Boere converted a penalty before half-time to wrap the game up for Twente.

Elsewhere, SC Cambuur clawed back a 2-0 deficit away to N.E.C. to take a point back to Leeuwarden with two late goals. Anass Achahbar, formerly of Feyenoord, and Sven Braken gave Nijmegen to lead only for Frank Sturing to score in the wrong goal three minutes from time. Full-back Emmanuel Mbende was the hero notching five minutes in stoppage time to make it 2-2 and send the away fans home in jubilation.

Roda JC dispatched last year’s champions Jong Ajax thanks to two goals from German winger Mario Engels (pictured above) in a 2-1 victory.

There was further wins for RKC Waalwijk, TOP Oss and FC Den Bosch before the weekend was over while FC Dordrecht and Helmond Sport played a goalless draw.

Champions League: PSV can set example for the future of Dutch football

It’s a huge European tie this Tuesday night as PSV travel to Belarus to face BATE in a Champions League qualifier, Will Burns previews what is a one of four most important nights for Dutch football in the next fortnight.

Hirving Lozano PSV

BATE Borisov vs. PSV

Tuesday, 20:00BST – Live on BT Sport 3

Tuesday night sees PSV Eindhoven embark on their Champions League qualification in a two-legged affair that is one of the most significant games in recent history for Dutch football.

Last December, on the release of the new UEFA rankings, it was declared that the champions of the Eredivisie would not automatically qualify for the Champions’ League group stages. For at least the next two seasons, the Dutch champions have to go through the preliminary rounds before competing in the group phase. This was a huge blow to the country that has claimed three different European champions – Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV.

The Netherlands are now 14th in the UEFA rankings behind neighbours Belgium and the likes of Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland who arguably host weaker leagues. Unfortunately, due to the lack of success in previous European competitions, this has what has become of Dutch football now as the Eredivisie has become a significant exporter of young talent to bigger leagues.

The Dutch teams need to act to improve the situation for the future of the league, and there’s certainly one way to start on Tuesday night: PSV to clinch the win away to Belarusian’s BATE Borisov. I predict this will be a hard task for Marc van Bommel’s side as history has proved that BATE are always a tough proposition at the Borisov Arena. In the last ten European ties at home, BATE have been dealt one defeat, a 4-2 Europa League loss to Arsenal last season.

BATE have a lightning quick counter attack that should be spearheaded by Montenegrin international Mirko Ivanić. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder/winger showed off this prowess in the last round at home to Azerbaijani opponents Qarabağ FK in a second leg 1-1 draw. Ivanić capitalised on a wayward pass across the defence and powered a run through onto goal to place the ball confidently in the net.

However, they did look suspect at the back that PSV may find rewarding. Using the counter attack, BATE received a lot of pressure over the two leagues against the Azerbaijan champions, outscored heavily 29-13 over the two legs. One has to think with the quality in the PSV attack (Hirving Lozano, Gaston Pereiro, Steven Bergwijn and Luuk de Jong) this defence can and should be breached and give the Eredivisie champions victory that themselves and Dutch football greatly need.

Team news

BATE Borisov

The Belarusian Premier League has been on a short summer break throughout August so BATE are fully refreshed with no injuries announced.

PSV Eindhoven

In the 2-1 win away to a physical Fortuna Sittard on Saturday evening, in which Luuk de Jong stated: “We were lucky to snatch a late win”, Marc van Bommel named an unchanged side. It is thought he will do the same against BATE. No first team injury worries.

Key Fact

BATE Borisov have lost just one game in the last ten European home ties – a 2017/18 Europa League group stage fixture vs. Arsenal that finished 4-2.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Tadic to the rescue for Ajax

Header-EredivisieReport

The second round of action in the Dutch top flight got underway on Friday evening at the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadion where a lone goal from Daniel Crowley saw Willem II post their first points of the campaign at the expense of hosts, FC Groningen, who remain without a point and propping up the table after succumbing to successive defeats in the opening two rounds of the season.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action began in Venlo where a late Dusan Tadic spot-kick saw an out-of-sorts Ajax snatch all three points against VVV.

Image result for dusan tadic

Elsewhere, NAC Breda brought De Graafschap back down to earth by hitting the newly promoted side for three, while a last-minute effort from substitute, Dante Rigo spared reigning Eredivisie champions, PSV Eindhoven’s blushes in Sittard against another of the league’s new boys, Fortuna.

Saturday’s action was rounded out in Almelo where Heracles followed up their impressive display at the Johan Cruijff ArenA last time out by hitting a hapless, ADO Den Haag for four.

Sunday’s action got underway at the Stadion Galgenwaard where first half goals from Joris van Overeem (who was later sent off) and Sean Klaiber saw FC Utrecht post their first points of the campaign at the expense of visiting, PEC Zwolle, who remain pointless.

Elsewhere, AZ Alkmaar ensured they would end the weekend back at the top of the standings by following up last week’s five-goal thrashing of NAC with a four-goal trouncing of top flight debutants, FC Emmen, while Feyenoord put a nightmare week in the rear view by hitting Rotterdam rivals, Excelsior for three at De Kuip.

Week two was brought to a close in Friesland where an 81st minute effort from Tim Matavz earned another side who saw their European hopes fade in mid-week, Vitesse Arnhem, a late share of the spoils against Heerenveen.

Results: Week 2

FC Groningen 0-1 Willem II

NAC Breda 3-0 De Graafschap

VVV Venlo 0-1 AFC Ajax

Eredivisie Team of the Week: RVP is the week’s MVP

Welcome to week two of the Total Dutch Football.com Eredivisie Player of the Year tournament. Every week Will Burns and Steve Davies select the best 11 from that week’s action and each player is awarded one point. One member of the team will win the ‘Player of the Week’ award and be awarded two points. Check the current standings here.

Week two sees Robin van Persie claim the Player of the Week award after the shift he put in during Feyenoord’s 3-0 win over Rotterdam rivals Excelsior. Scoring one and creating one, he got our vote of the standout star this weekend.

Making their second week in a row is VVV goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall, Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt and AZ Alkmaar pair Thomas Ouwejan and Teun Koopmeiners. Joining his AZ teammates is Ousamma Idrissi who notched two goals, as did Kristoffer Peterson who guided Heracles to defeat ADO 4-2 on Saturday.

Hirving Lozano, arguably last years’s MVP, grabbed a slot in our team by scoring the opener in PSV’s 2-1 away to Fortuna Sittard.

Rounding out the team is Sean Klaiber, goal-scoring defender from FC Utrecht and Jens Toornstra of Feyenoord, both helped their teams to wins.

Eerste Divisie 2018/19 Preview

The Eerste Divisie has undergone a revamp this summer and has been renamed the Keuken Kampioen Divisie due to a new sponsorship taking over, Will Burns looks at the season ahead.

Looking at the twenty teams involved in the 2018/19 Eerste Divisie campaign, the league looks strong with many contenders for promotion. Some big names like FC Twente, Sparta Rotterdam, N.E.C. Nijmegen, Go Ahead Eagles, Roda JC, SC Cambuur and RKC Waalwijk are in the competition this year in what looks to be an unpredictable season (as usual) for the Dutch first division.

Image result for tom boere fc twente

As expected, on paper FC Twente look to have one of the strongest squads with Oussama Assaidi, Xandro Schenk, Peet Bijen, Wout Brama, Haris Vuckic, Tim Holscher and Jari Oosterwijk all lining up for The Tukkers. If the former youth prodigy Oosterwijk can’t get new promoted head coach Marino Pusic goals then Tom Boere surely will. Boere scored 33 goals in 38 appearances for TOP Oss in the 2016/17 season and if he can replicate that performance he’ll surely fire his team into promotion contention.

The oldest club in the Netherlands, Sparta Rotterdam fell out of the Eredivisie last year and Henk Fraser takes over the reins from Dick Advocaat. De Kasteelheren themselves have an abundance of talent well capable of mounting a challenge from promotion. With Lars Veldwijk, Ragnar Ache, Edouard Duplan and Mohamed Rayhi in the attack, Sparta fans should be treated to plenty of goals. Dries Wuytens and Bart Vriends provide some solid top flight experience at the back and Suently Alberto and Giliano Wijnaldum (younger brother of Liverpool’s Georginio) should benefit from working with them while Adil Auassar should create chances for fun. One big story coming out of the Het KasteelI was the turnaround of Royston Drenthe. The former Real Madrid and Everton man has opted to come back to football after retiring last January to take up a rap career under the moniker of ‘Roya2Faces’.

Jack de Gier is once again linked up with N.E.C. Nijmegen returning from a two-year stint at Almere City. He has some great talent at his disposal from the goalkeeper Gino Coutinho to the forward line with Anass Achahbar up top. In defence, Guus Joppen, Robin Buwalda, Rens van Eijden, Josef Kvida and Leroy Labylle are an array of resource with Eredivisie experience for the back-line. In the middle of the park, Joey van den Berg has the ability to run the show for most games. One blow for De Gier is losing winger Randy Wolters to injury until the new year but one guy that I feel will stand out is. He signed on from Heracles in the summer but I feel has too much quality to playing in the second tier Brahim Darri week in, week out.

Go Ahead Eagles john stegeman

The less said about the 2017/18 campaign, the better for Go Ahead Eagles and Total Dutch Football.com’s Steve Davies (an Eagles fan). Despite spending the previous campaign in the Eredivisie, the season never really got going for the Deventer boys. The management change of Leon Vlemmings with Jan van Staa failed to produce an upturn in form with the Eagles eventually stumbling to a 17th place finish – the club’s worst for over a decade. Unsurprisingly, the summer saw an overhaul of both the playing squad and technical staff with John Stegeman raising many an eyebrow by taking a step down from a successful spell at Heracles to take charge of his beloved Eagles. The 41-year-old was a huge success in Almelo leading Heracles up to from 14th to sixth in the Eredivisie so he could most certainly be the man for the job. Stegeman will have almost a completely new squad to choose from with notable arrivals. Goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst has made the switch from FC Volendam, full-back Roland Baas and Czech winger Jaroslav Navrátil has followed Stegeman from Heracles. Former Heraclieden defender Jeroen Veldmate, turned down the opportunity to play in the top flight with newly promoted FC Emmen to make the switch to De Adelaarshorst. The optimism is as high as it has been for a number of years, so expect the men from Deventer to be back in the more familiar surroundings of the promotion/relegation play-off picture come the end of this season.

Roda JC managed by former Leeds United defender Robert Molenaar, will also be in the running. ‘The Terminator’ known for his side’s tough tackling and in-your-face football will have his team organised and hard to beat. They do not possess as much quality as many other teams but German right-winger Mario Engels will be a force to reckon with. Fast, strong with a clinical finish, the 24-year-old has fantastic ability from set-pieces and may steal the show in many games.

Former Twente boss René Hake still resides at SC Cambuur, a job he gained last January and steered the Leeuwarden side into eighth place. His business in the summer has not really strengthened the side into contenders and another year of missing out on promotion looks likely. The same can be said for RKC Waalwijk. After an incredibly disappointing finish in 18th last year, new RKC boss Fred Grim has not had the funds to increase hopes of reaching the playoffs.

Image result for jong ajax eerste divisie champions

Jong Ajax and Jong PSV will be using the league as usual to nurture their talents ready for the heights of the Eredivisie and European football and taking points away from the promotion hopefuls.

When it comes to predicting who could finish as champions, I would need a crystal ball the size of De Kuip to come up with a conclusion for such a crazy league.

EREDIVISIE Betting Tips: Matthijs de Ligt to fire Ajax to victory

Header-EredivisiePreview

Still holding a decent profit after a small midweek loss, Will Burns presents his selections for week two of the Eredivisie season.

matthijs de ligt ajax

VVV-Venlo vs. Ajax

Saturday, 17:30

Following PSV’s 4-0 demolition of FC Utrecht on the opening weekend, Ajax head south to Venlo to face VVV and Erik ten Hag’s team know that they cannot afford any slip-ups. Their bitter rivals from Eindhoven already hold a two-point lead over the Amsterdam giants after just one round as Heracles held de Godenzonen to a 1-1 draw last Saturday.

The Amsterdammers will need to close the gap in what should be a competitive race for the Eredivisie this season, and what a better way to start that by defeating Venlo on Saturday teatime.

VVV-Venlo experienced a better first round of games as they scraped a narrow 1-0 win away to Willem II. Maurice Steijn’s side were well organised but absorbed a lot of pressure from The Tricolores but goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was superb keeping a clean sheet. The German did so well he claimed a place in our Team of the Week. Willem II’s force showed in the statistics having 17 shots to VVV’s six and claiming 13 corners to VVV’s two.

Anyone who witnessed Ajax’s Champions League 3-0 victory against Standard Liege on Tuesday night cannot be anything but impressed. It was a dominating performance that should have seen more goals and we saw young defender Matthijs de Ligt showing his worth with his second headed goal in two matches from a corner.

Ajax will press VVV and I see a lot of corners raining in and if so, then De Ligt will trouble the Venlo defence and I think him to score anytime at 9.50 at 888Sport is definitely worth sticking a fiver on.  I can certainly see Ajax racking up two or three goals so my more confident selection is Ajax to win by more than one goal on the Asian Handicap.

Recommended Bet: Ajax -1.5 Asian Handicap – £10 on at 1.94 to win £19.40 at 888Sport

Recommended Bet: Matthijs de Ligt to score anytime – £5 on at 9.50 to win £47.50 at 888Sport/Unibet

 az 5-0

FC Emmen vs. AZ Alkmaar

Sunday, 13:30

Another impressive performance this past week was AZ’s 5-0 drubbing of NAC Breda – this was total domination. AZ outscored NAC an amazing 29-5 on shots and 14-1 on corners and against newly promoted FC Emmen, I could not look past another pasting.

In one of the many shocks of last weekend, Emmen managed to grab a win in their first ever Eredivisie game away to ADO Den Haag by two goals to one. However, although they collected the three points, Emmen looked suspect at defending set-pieces, a trait which I feel AZ can exploit.

I feel AZ could be the team to watch this season. The midfield is crammed with young talent, Guus Til (20), Fredrik Midtsjo (25) and Teun Koopmeiners (20) are all capable of testing the goalkeeper. The full-backs are strong and creative in Thomas Ouwejan (22) and Swede Jonas Svensson (25) and experienced stalwart Ron Vlaar (33) brings the old head to the back line and a good head to set-pieces threats.

AZ to win by at least two goals is my pick. Good luck if you’re betting.

Champions League: Back Ajax’s Dusan Tadic to deliver knockout blow to Standard

After securing a healthy profit on the weekend’s Eredivisie games, Will Burns is on hand to try and add to the pot with his selection for the big Champions League qualification game at the Johan Cruijff Arena on tonight.

Dusan Tadic Ajax

Ajax vs. Standard Liege

Tuesday, 19:30

After dropping a 2-0 lead away in Belgium last week, Ajax host Standard Liege with hopes of clinching a slot in the next round of Champions League qualification. The Amsterdammers took a 2-0 half time lead with goals from Klass Jan Huntelaar and new summer signing Dušan Tadić.

However, Standard hit back from a Moroccan striker Mehdi Carcela-González wonder strike but Erik ten Hag’s side looked to be hanging on to take the win back to the Netherlands. Unfortunately for the travelling fans it was not to be, as in the dying seconds of stoppage time, young right-back Noussair Marzaoui was penalised for a soft foul on Moussa Djenepo in the area and Renaud Emond dispatched the resulting penalty.

This past weekend, the Eredivisie season did not get off to a perfect start for Ten Hag as his side were held to a 1-1 draw to Heracles with 19-year-old central defender Matthijs de Ligt heading home an equaliser to save the Amsterdammers’ blushes.

I’m focussing on one player for my pick, Dušan Tadić. I found it a great surprise when I read that the former Southampton winger had signed on the dotted line for Ajax this past summer. Dropping back to the Eredivisie, especially since Tadić was fifth in the Premier League last year for chances created (66) with five assists left me startled.

I rate the Serbian very highly and he’s already made his mark in this tie being involved in both goals last week in Belgium, creating Huntelaar’s opener and then smashing home an edge of the box strike to double Ajax’s lead.

I think he stands a great chance to fire in another goal against Liege who seemed to grant him a lot of space a week ago.

Recommended Bet: Dušan Tadić to score anytime – £10 on at 2.46 to win £24.60 at 888Sport/Unibet

Eredivisie Team of the Week: PSV’s Gaston glows on Week One

The Eredivisie season is back and so is our Player of the Year tournament. Every week Will Burns and Steve Davies select the best 11 from that week’s action and each player is awarded one point. One member of the team will win the ‘Player of the Week’ award and be awarded two points. Check the current standings here.

Due to the fantastic performance in PSV’s emphatic 4-0 win over FC Utrecht, with a goal and assist we have awarded Gaston Pereiro the ‘Player of the Week’ award and he receives the two points.

PSV hold two other positions in the team with Denzel Dumfries and Steven Bergwijn, who notched goals themselves in the Saturday evening’s game. Heerenveen, 3-2 winners over PEC Zwolle on Friday night, have a pair in the team: Arber Zeneli and Morten Thorsby. Thorsby notched two goals before receiving a red card near the hour mark, however we felt his performance still warranted a place in the eleven. Zwolle striker Mike van Duinen notched both goals for this side in the opening game of the Eredivisie campaign.

AZ were big winners on Sunday afternoon smashing NAC Breda for five and Teun Koopmeiners was the star of the show. He is joined in the team by left-back Thomas Ouwejan, both were scorers in the 5-0 victory. Vitesse also hit five goals this past weekend (5-1 vs. FC Groningen) and Roy Beerens created one and scored one to gain a place in the team of the week.

Ajax failed on the opening day against Heracles and if it was not for Matthijs de Ligt it could have been worse. The 19-year-old defender headed home an late equaliser to spare Ajax’s blushes in a 1-1 draw.

Rounding out the team is German goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall who was unstoppable in VVV’s 1-0 over Willem II.

More next week. Remember to keep an eye on the standings of the Player of the Season tournament by clicking here.

EREDIVISIE Week One Preview and Betting Tips

Header-EredivisiePreview

Will Burns makes his return with three selections for this opening weekend of Eredivisie action.

Image result for psv mark van bommel

PSV vs. FC Utrecht

Saturday, 19:45

We witnessed major change in Eindhoven this past summer as manager Philip Cocu left to take on a new challenge in Turkey with Fenerbahçe. He was replaced by former team-mate Marc van Bommel despite a lack of experience at this level. Last weekend, Van Bommel’s debut did get off to a good start losing on penalties to rivals Feyenoord as the Rotterdammers lifted the Johan Cruyff Schaal.

This weekend, Van Bommel begins the quest to retain the Eredivisie title against FC Utrecht and he will be encouraged by the talent he has inherited in the PSV squad. A major plus over the summer is the decision of Mexican superstar Hirving Lozano to stay in Eindhoven despite impressing at the World Cup in Russia and attraction attention from some major clubs across Europe.

De Boeren have seen success in 21 of their last 22 home matches against Utrecht in all competitions and I predict more the same on Saturday evening with plenty of goals. Utrecht saw masses of goal action on their travels last season, but specifically in 2018 so far as they have seen over 2.5 goals in their last eight away games.

PSV have notched at least two goals in nine of their last 10 games against Utrecht and with attacking talents like Lozano, Luuk de Jong and Steven Bergwijn at their disposal I feel getting on PSV on the handicap is the best bet in this one.

Recommended Bet: PSV -1 Asian Handicap – £10 on at 2.20 to win £22.00 at Paddy Power

Image result for feyenoord 4-0

De Graafschap vs. Feyenoord

Sunday, 13:30

Feyenoord were hammered four goals without reply by Slovakian underdogs AS Trenčín on Thursday night and it will not get any easier when they travel to Doetinchem to face Eredivisie new boys De Graafschap.

An embarrassing defeat in European qualification has not provided Giovanni van Bronckhorst with the best preparation for the new Eredivisie season. The former Arsenal and Celtic man has to contend with the absences of summer signing Yassin Ayoub and last season’s top scorer Nicolai Jörgensen too which will hamper their creation going forward.

De Graafschap will see this as an excellent opportunity to claim a huge scalp and defeat the Rotterdam giants, who start with the inexperienced 20-year-old Justin Bijlow in goal, and they may just have one eye on Thursday’s night return game against Trenčín.

Taking all this into account, the home fans at the Stadion De Vijverberg could be celebrating on Sunday afternoon. It’s long odds but I placing a bet on De Graafschap Draw No Bet at 3/1 is worth a punt.

Recommended Bet: De Graafschap Draw No Bet – £10 on at 4.00 to win £40.00 at 888Sport

Vitesse Arnhem vs. FC Groningen

Sunday, 13:30

Vitesse Arnhem are already three weeks into their new campaign due to the qualifying stages of the Europa League. Leonid Slutsky’s side have successfully dispatched Romania outfit FC Viitorul 5-3 on aggregate and were defeated 1-0 by FC Basel on Thursday night in their first leg of the third round of qualification.

Their opponents on Sunday, FC Groningen head into their first competitive game which surely gives the hosts the advantage, however Vitesse will see the second leg against Basel vitally important financially and may have thoughts elsewhere on Sunday afternoon. Groningen have become draw specialists after claiming just a point in five of their last six away league games and four of those games finished 1-1.

New manager Danny Buijs will be very pleased if his side can leave the Gelredome with a point on the opening weekend and I see that as the most likely result.

It may only be March but it is not difficult to predict who will be collecting Heracles Almelo’s Player of the Season award. 25-year-old right-winger Brandley Kuwas is a shoe-in for the nomination thanks to a season of stellar performances on the right flank.

Kuwas first gained the attention of many in his match-winning display in the opening gameweek of the Eredivisie season, grabbing an assist and a goal in a 2-1 comeback victory over AFC Ajax. It was during this game that the Curaçao international showcased his main attributes. As a left-footed right-winger it was of little surprise to see that both of Heracles’ goals came from the right-hand-side of the pitch. Cutting inside onto his favoured left on both occasions, Kuwas punished the Amsterdammers.

However, unlike many players who simply up their game against top opposition, Kuwas has maintained the high level throughout the entire season to date. Four goals and eleven assists later and he is one of the Eredivisie’s leaders in terms of direct goal involvement. His haul of eleven assists is the league’s best, two more than nearest challengers Hakim Ziyech and David Neres, both on nine.

Heading the assists rankings is not the only thing that Kuwas leads the Eredivisie in. For players to have played at least 1000 minutes, nobody matches the 25-year-old’s 4.2 dribbles per 90 minutes. This comes as little surprise to anybody who has seen Heracles play this season; Kuwas is an extremely strong dribbler, and his default position is to begin very wide on the right. Plenty of wingers are successful at dribbling down the line while some prefer to cut inside and complete most of their dribbles there. Kuwas on the other hand is adept at both. Going to the by-line is just as simple as dribbling across the face of goal on the edge of the box for the Curaçao winger. This makes him a real threat.

His eleven assists have come against eleven different opponents, meanwhile without his creativity and contributions Heracles would find themselves a massive sixteen points worse off in the league. This would see them plummet from relative safety in 11th to rock-bottom in 18th position. To say that Brandley Kuwas’ influence is felt at Heracles would be a serious understatement.

To register eleven league assists by March is a mean feat but a closer look at Kuwas’ key pass statistics indicates perhaps why this is the case. For players to have played a minimum of 1000 minutes, only Hakim Ziyech – the crown prince of the Eredivisie assist – has a better number of key passes per 90 minutes than Kuwas this season.

Kuwas registers four key passes per 90, which equates to a key pass roughly every eight passes. This is a testament to his direct approach and playing style. Kuwas’ first instinct is to go forward and find forwards in a goalscoring position, and he seems to be getting better and better at it as the seasons go by.

In years gone by Kuwas has been in the news for the occasional long-range effort that has found the back of the net. He is still an audacious player with an eye for the spectacular, particularly from free-kicks, however he does appear to be more disciplined in terms of his decision-making. When in the past he may have elected to shoot from distance, this season Kuwas opts to find a teammate and it has paid dividends for both the player and the club. The sheer number of assists he has registered is no fluke; he often gets into dangerous positions and has subsequently reaped the rewards from better choices when shooting and passing.

The prospect of an Eredivisie departure is on the cards with his current contract expiring in June 2019, however prospective buyers must consider the fact that Kuwas – already 25 – may have reached his ceiling. Barring the 2-1 win over Ajax at the beginning of the season, Kuwas largely fails to impact games against the top opposition.

Since the start of the 2016-17 campaign, against the big three of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV, Kuwas has registered two assists and one goal over the course of nine matches. During that time, Heracles have managed just the one win as well.

Nevertheless, Kuwas is an exciting player who is in excellent form. Capable of putting lesser teams to the sword on a consistent basis, he certainly continues to be an asset to Heracles Almelo. He most definitely is an Eredivisie player that an eye should be kept on in the near future.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Twenty-Six

Header-EredivisieReport

The twenty sixth round of action in the Dutch top flight got underway on Friday evening at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion where visiting, Heracles hit struggling Roda JC for three to move within five points of the UEFA Europa League play-off places.

Buoyed by victory over PEC Zwolle last time out, the away side were quick to assert their authority over their relegation-threatened hosts and would take the lead just with just thirteen minutes on the clock when Brandley Kuwas rifled home a free kick from well outside the area that left Hidde Jurjus grasping at thin air.

Despite visiting coach, John Stegeman this week committing his future to Go Ahead Eagles, his side would double their advantage six minutes before the break through Kristoffer Peterson, who having outmuscled both Mikhail Rosheuvel and Mohamed El Makrini on the edge of the area, cut inside and left Patrick Banggaard for dead before picking out the bottom left hand corner of Jurjus’ net.

The hosts, who came into this encounter without a win in their last six outings in all competitions, might have got back into the game in the 67th minute but Roland Baas was in the right place at the right time to head a goal-bound effort from Dani Schahin off the line before Banggaard got in the way of a Kuwas strike at the other end that would have effectively killed the match as a contest four minutes later.

Having been frustrated once again when first, Baas stabbed the ball against Jurjus’ left hand upright before second half substitute, Paul Gladon’s subsequent finish was ruled out by referee, Jochem Kamphuis seven minutes from time after the man on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers clearly handled the ball before finding the back of the host’s net, that illusive third goal would eventually arrive in the 89th minute when Kuwas laid the ball back for Peter van Ooijen to claim his first of the campaign with a low drive from just outside the area.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action began at the Philips Stadion where PSV Eindhoven hit in-form, FC Utrecht for three to move ten points clear at the top of the standings.

With Jean-Paul de Jong still yet to taste defeat since taking over as coach from Erik ten Hag over the winter break and his side coming into this encounter on the back of four straight wins it came as little surprise when the visitors almost took an early lead when Mark van der Maarel swept the ball onto the foot of Jeroen Zoet’s right hand upright with just thirteen minutes gone.

However, the full back’s miss would ultimately prove costly as it was the hosts, whose only defeat in their last twelve outings came at the hands of reigning Eredivisie champions, Feyenoord in the quarter finals of the KNVB Beker (a defeat which they promptly avenged last time out), who would subsequently take a stranglehold on proceedings when the unlucky Ramon Leeuwin unwittingly broke the deadlock by diverting a Bart Ramselaar cut-back into his own net before Luuk de Jong left David Jensen rooted to the spot with an audacious bicycle kick to double the home side’s advantage just six minutes later.

Galvanised by their first half performance, it would take Phillip Cocu’s men just six second half minutes to effectively end the game as a contest when, having sprinted half the length of the field after picking up the ball from Santiago Arias just inside his own half, Steven Bergwijn turned Sean Klaiber inside out and slotted the ball past an exposed Jensen to make it three from just outside the box.

Fresh from booking a place in the final of the KNVB Beker for the second time in as many years on Wednesday evening, AZ Alkmaar withstood a late rally from hosts, Excelsior to post a fourth straight victory in all competitions and move to within two points of second placed Ajax.

With a relieved Theo Zwarthoed having had the woodwork to thank after the away side came within a whisker of taking a seventh minute lead when a low drive from Guss Til struck the foot of his right hand upright, the home side’s experienced shot-stopper would then unwittingly give the visitors a helping hand by diverting an Alireza Jahanbakhsh cross into his own net twelve minutes later.

Despite the home side carving out the majority of the chances thereafter, the visitors would double their advantage a minute before the break when Pantelis Hatzidiakos capitalised on some loose play from Wout Faes to send Jahanbakhsh away to claim his thirteenth of the campaign in all competitions.

Having emerged for the second half with a renewed sense of purpose, the hosts would come within a whisker of reducing the arrears on the hour when Wout Weghorst was in the right place at the right time to clear a goal-bound header from Jurgen Mattheij off the line.

However, despite the best efforts of AZ loanee, Levi Garcia, who teed up Ali Messaoud to halve the away side’s advantage with a spectacular effort from just outside the area four minutes later – just five minutes after the 20-year-old had been brought on to replace Stanley Elbers, an equaliser ultimately remained elusive for Mitchell van der Gaag’s men.

Elsewhere, out-of-form Heerenveen ended a run of four games without a win by heaping more misery on struggling Willem II, who, having been hit for three in their semi-final tie with Feyenoord in the KNVB Beker on Wednesday night, fell to a goal in either half at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

The hosts would make the perfect start when a low drive from Lucas Woudenberg found the foot of Mattijs Branderhorst’s left hand upright on its way into the back of the net for the 23-year-old’s first of the campaign with just thirteen minutes on the clock before, having evaded the attentions of Darryl Lachman, Reza Ghoochannejhad flicked home a pinpoint cross from Denzel Dumfries two minutes into the second half to claim his fourth goal in his last seven outings and three much-needed points to leave Jurgen Streppel’s men just three points off the UEFA Europa League play-off places.

At the same time, there were remarkable scenes in Breda where, having overcome Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men earlier in the campaign, NAC eased their own relegation fears by coming from behind to see off reigning Eredivisie champions, Feyenoord.

Despite the eventual result, things had begun well for the visitors who, having booked their place in the final of the KNVB Beker on Wednesaday evening, hit the front with just seventeen minutes gone at the Rat Verlegh Stadion when some neat inter-play by the away side culminated in Tonny Vilhena poking the ball back for Jens Toornstra to sweep home his eighth of the season in all competitions from mid-way inside the area.

However, the visitor’s advantage would last just six minutes when Thierry Ambrose found himself in the right place at the right time to tap the ball into an unguarded net, seconds after Brad Jones had clawed the ball away from the feet of a marauding Umar Sadiq.

Having only been drafted into the starting line-up at the eleventh hour when injury forced former Feyenoord man, Mitchell te Vrede to withdraw, the 21-year-old Nigerian made the most of his first start in a NAC shirt by earning and subsequently dispatching a somewhat controversial spot-kick four minutes into the second half to ultimately secure a priceless three points that left the hosts seven points clear of the bottom three after the man on loan from Roma was thrown to the ground in an off-the-ball clash with Jones seconds after attempting to close the Australian down as he cleared his lines.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the MAC3PARK Stadion where it ended honours even between out-of-form PEC Zwolle and VVV Venlo.

Despite having been on the back foot for the majority of a goalless opening period, it would be the visitors, who, having been unlucky not to have taken the lead when Johnatan Opoku saw his speculative effort from just outside the area strike Diederik Boer’s right hand upright just a minute earlier, would break the deadlock when a Vito van Crooij free kick found the top right hand corner of the veteran glovesman’s net in the 68th minute.

However, despite coming into this encounter on the back of three straight defeats, the home side would ultimately stop the rot when Youness Mokhtar picked out the head of an unmarked Mustafa Saymak at the back post to restore parity for the hosts with his tenth of the campaign seventeen minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Sparta Rotterdam came from a goal down at home to ADO Den Haag to snatch three priceless points and move off the foot of the table.

Having arrived in Rotterdam unbeaten in their last five outings, the visitors wasted little time in asserting their authority over their struggling hosts when, having been slipped in by an incisive through-ball from Abdenasser El Khayati, Erik Falkenburg swept the ball home off the foot of Jannik Huth’s right hand upright with just six minutes on the clock.

Things might have gotten even better for the visitors had Falkenburg found the back of the net as opposed to the foot of Huth’s other post after being sent clear by a well-weighted ball from Lex Immers three minutes before the break.

However, despite taking just one point from the last twelve, the hosts would claw their way back onto level terms just after the hour when Thomas Verhaar glanced former ADO man, Michiel Kramer into the clear to claim just his third of the campaign and first in a Sparta shirt by slotting the ball calmly past an exposed Robert Zwinkels.

Things would get even better for Dick Advocaat’s side when, having seen his 68th minute effort come back off the visiting ‘keeper’s right hand upright, half time replacement, Robert Muhren made Wilfried Kanon pay for a poor headed clearance by turning the Ivorian inside out and lashing the ball beyond the reach of Zwinkels to snatch three much-needed points for the hosts seven minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Ajax’s title hopes were left in tatters after Vitesse Arnhem came out on top in a five-goal thriller at the GelreDome.

Having made the perfect start when Navarone Foor cut in from the right and lashed the ball into the top left hand corner of Andre Onana’s net from well outside the area with just sixteen minutes on the clock, the hosts were unlucky not to add to their lead when a goal-bound header from Matt Miazga was cleared off the line by Hakim Ziyech eleven minutes before the break.

However, the Moroccan’s clearance would ultimately prove to be only a temporary reprieve for the visitors who fell further behind when Bryan Linssen capitalised on some ponderous play from Maximilian Wöber on the edge of the area to steal in and slam the ball past an exposed Onana twelve minutes into the second half.

However, just when the points appeared safe for the home side, a double switch from Erik ten Hag paid immediate dividends when substitute, Mateo Cassierra headed home a Ziyech corner to claw the visitors back into the game just a minute after replacing Wöber on the hour before, having been introduced at the same time as the Colombian, Amin Younes very nearly pulled the away side back onto level terms when his effort came back off Remko Pasveer’s right hand upright two minutes later.

Yet, when a Mason Mount free kick was headed back across goal by Guram Kashia for Linssen to volley home his second and the host’s third with nineteen minutes to play, any thoughts the visitors may have harboured of making a comeback looked to have been put on ice once more and, although the away side would eventually find a second five minutes from time when an unmarked Siem de Jong slammed a Younes knock-down into the roof of Pasveer’s net from a few yards out, a third failed to materialise for ten Hag and his men who ended the weekend ten points adrift of table-topping PSV Eindhoven.

The twenty sixth round of action in the Dutch top flight was concluded in Enschede where relegation-threatened FC Twente put the disappointment of missing out on a place in the final of the KNVB Beker on Wednesday evening by coming from behind to snatch a share of the spoils against fellow strugglers, FC Groningen.

Having failed to win any of their last six outings in all competitions, things were looking ominous for Gertjan Verbeek’s men when Ritsu Doan evaded the attentions of three before slotting the ball past an exposed Joel Drommel from just outside the box to claim his seventh of the campaign in all competitions twelve minutes into the second half.

Things might have gotten worse for the hosts were it not for Peet Bijen who found himself in the right place at the right time to stop a goal-bound effort from Juninho Bacuna after a well weighted lob from Mimoun Mahi took Drommel out of the equation and presented the 20-year-old with an empty net just nine minutes later.

However, having failed to win any of their last seven games, the away side would ultimately have to be content with a fourth draw in as many matches when Tom Boere glanced home an Adam Maher cross from mid-way inside the visitor’s area to ultimately earn the host’s a vital point in their quest to beat the drop nineteen minutes from time.

Things might have gotten even better for the home side but, despite earlier clawing the home side back on level terms, Boere was left frustrated when his header clipped the top of Sergio Padt’s crossbar with a quarter of an hour left to play before a covering Jesper Drost blocked a goal-bound effort from Danny Holla a minute later.
