 Semi Final Review

Wednesday 28th February 2018

Wednesday evening saw both of this season’s KNVB Beker semi-final ties take place with the action beginning at the AFAS Stadion where AZ Alkmaar hit struggling FC Twente for four to book a place in the final of the competition for the second season in succession.

Having lost out to Vitesse Arnhem in last year’s final, the hosts began the match in determined fashion and took the lead when a marauding Jonas Svensson pulled the ball back for Guus Til to beat a static Joel Drommel from just inside the area with twenty four minutes on the clock.

The home side would effectively kill the tie as a contest by hitting their relegation-threatened guests twice in the space of four second half minutes when, with Wout Weghorst having doubled the host’s advantage with his twentieth goal of the campaign in all competitions by stooping low to head home an Oussama Idrissi cross nineteen minutes after the restart, the in-form Idrissi would then make it three for John van den Brom’s side in the 68th minute by ghosting in at the back post to turn home a low cross from Fredrik Midtsjø.

The thoughts of the home faithful had long since turned to the club’s second cup final in as many years by the time Weghorst, having held off the attentions of Peet Bijen, sent a trailing Idrissi through to claim his second and the home side’s fourth seventeen minutes from time.

Like the first, Wednesday’s second semi-final tie ultimately proved to be every bit a as straightforward as its predecessor with reigning Eredivisie champions, Feyenoord hitting another side struggling at the wrong end of the table, Willem II, for three to reach the final of the competition for the second time in three years.

With any chance of retaining their Eredivisie crown now long gone, this competition, which Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side won in 2016, now represents the club’s last opportunity to claim a piece of silverware from what has been a disappointing campaign and, buoyed by a vocal home crowd, it took just twenty minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock when the returning Ridgeciano Haps’ cut-back was cleverly left by Nicolai Jørgensen for the trailing Steven Berghuis to smash the ball past Mattijs Branderhorst from just outside the box and claim his seventeenth goal of the season in all competitions.

Having played no part in Sunday’s three-goal reversal at the hands of table-topping PSV Eindhoven, Robin van Persie was unleashed from the start here and the 34-year-old was on hand to double the home side’s advantage on the hour by prodding home a square ball from a marauding Haps who, seconds earlier, had been found in acres of space on the left by a lovely diagonal pass from Jean-Paul Boëtius on the opposite flank, to cap a swift counter attack and notch the 300th goal of his senior career before departing to a heroes’ reception nine minutes from time.

His replacement would also make his mark, when just three minutes after taking the field, Jens Toornstra slipped in Tonny Vilhena, who ghosted past two before putting the result beyond doubt with a low drive into the bottom left hand corner of Branderhorst’s net to seal Feyenoord’s place in the final of the competition that will take place at De Kuip on Sunday 22nd April.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Twenty-Five

Header-EredivisieReport

The twenty fifth round of action in the Dutch top flight got underway at the Noordlease Stadion where relegation-threatened, NAC Breda kept fellow strugglers, Groningen in sight thanks to an 86th minute equaliser from Mitchell te Vrede.

The hosts were unlucky not to take the lead ten minutes into what would ultimately prove to be a goalless opening period when, having evaded the attentions of both Lucas Schoofs and Pablo Mari, Mimoun Mahi saw his fierce effort from the edge of the box come back off Nigel Bertrams’ crossbar.

However, the home side looked to be on course to open up a seven-point gap between themselves and Stijn Vreven’s men when the unlucky Pablo Mari diverted a Django Warmerdam cross past his own ‘keeper in the 66th minute as the NAC skipper attempted to keep Mahi at bay on the edge of the box.

Having come into this encounter seven points clear of the bottom three, the hosts were unlucky not to extend their lead when first, substitute, Ajdin Hrustic saw his low drive clip the outside of Bertrams’ left hand upright with the visiting ‘keeper left rooted to the spot after the ball struck Pablo Mari on its way through with seventy seven minutes gone before Gamba Osaka loanee, Ritsu Doan was denied by the bar seven minutes from time.

Groningen’s failure to take those chances would ultimately prove crucial when the visitors, who had earlier come within a whisker of restoring parity themselves when Thomas Agyepong’s speculative effort from well outside the area clipped Sergio Padt’s crossbar a minute before the break, snatched a late share of the spoils when, having stolen a march on Yoell van Nieff to latch onto a perfectly weighted through-ball from second half replacement, Paolo Fernandes, recent arrival, Mitchell te Vrede, having seen his initial effort blocked, beat Padt at the second time of asking four minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the AFAS Stadion where high-flying AZ Alkmaar left it late to see off bottom-of-the-table Sparta Rotterdam.

Despite Alireza Jahanbakhsh seeing a 9th minute effort strike the foot of Jannik Huth’s right hand upright, it was the visitors who would ultimately break the deadlock when Julian Chabot rose highest to nod home a Ryan Sanusi corner ten minutes later.

However, the away side’s lead would only last until a minute before the break when, having drawn the attentions of Huth, Oussama Idrissi rounded off a fantastic team move by squaring the ball for skipper, Wout Weghorst to claim his nineteenth of the campaign in all competitions.

Having set up the equaliser, Idrissi would then cap an impressive personal display by escaping the attentions of both Bart Vriends and Sanusi with a deft step over before beating Huth with a low drive from just inside the area to secure all three points for the hosts four minutes from time.

Elsewhere, an error from Lucas Woudenberg led to Mike van Duinen putting away-day specialists, Excelsior into what would ultimately prove to be an unassailable lead ten minutes before the break in their encounter with Heerenveen to earn Mitchell van der Gaag’s troops back-to-back league victories for the first time since early November.

However, things might have been very different had Reza Ghoochannejhad’s 8th minute effort found the back of the net instead of striking Theo Zwarthoed’s right hand upright before the visiting ‘keeper was forced to palm a rasping Michel Vlap drive onto his other post shortly before the half hour mark.

At the same time, a 62nd minute effort from Vincent Vermeij ultimately proved enough to see hosts, Heracles get back to winning ways against out-of-form PEC Zwolle.

With the home side having come within a whisker of breaking the deadlock when first, Brandley Kuwas saw his 21st minute effort cannon back off Diederik Boer’s crossbar before Bram van Polen found himself in the right place at the right time to block a goal-bound effort from Vincent Vermeij seven minutes before the break seconds after Boer had been forced to palm a Kuwas corner onto his own bar, it came as little surprise when John Stegeman’s side finally took the lead when Kristoffer Peterson ghosted in at the back post to nod home a pinpoint cross from the impressive Kuwas in the 42nd minute.

However, despite Kuwas then striking the foot of Boer’s left hand upright direct from another corner seconds before the interval, the host’s lead would only last until five minutes into the second half when Younes Namli capped a swift counter attack by slipping in Piotr Parzyszek who restored parity for the visitors by squeezing the ball between an onrushing Bram Castro and the home ‘keeper’s left hand upright.

Yet the home side weren’t to be denied and, having seen Peterson stumble in an attempt to convert a low cross from Roland Baas on the edge of the box, the in-form Vermeij was quick to gobble up the loose ball and seal all three points for the hosts with his fourth goal in his last six outings.

The host’s margin of victory might have been even greater had the Manchester City-bound Phillippe Sandler not been on hand to slide the ball back into the grateful arms of Boer after the visiting ‘keeper’s initial block had only served to slow the progress of Kuwas’ goal-bound effort four minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded at De Koel where visiting, Vitesse Arnhem came back from two-down to snatch a point from their encounter with VVV Venlo.

The points appeared to be going the host’s way early on when, with Torino Hunte having already put the home side into the ascendency with a well taken half volley with just ten minutes on the clock, Lennart Thy was on hand to double his side’s advantage with a speculative effort that took a wicked bounce which caught out Remko Pasveer in the visitor’s net twelve minutes later.

However, just when it appeared that the away side were heading for a second straight defeat, Henk Fraser’s men were handed a way back into the game when, in an attempt to clear his lines, the unlucky Nils Röseler only succeeded in diverting a low Thomas Bruns cross into his own net just five minutes later.

Buoyed by the German’s misfortune, the away side would emerge for the second half with an added spring in their step and ultimately secure a share of the spoils when Lars Unnerstall inexplicably allowed a Mason Mount free kick to slip through his fingers three minutes after the restart.

Sunday’s action began at the Johan Cruijff ArenA where Ajax’s title hopes were dealt a potentially fatal blow after Erik ten Hag’s men were held to a goalless draw by visiting ADO Den Haag.

Things might have been different for the hosts had makeshift striker, Siem de Jong found the back of the net instead of heading a Donny van de Beek cross against Robert Zwinkels’ right hand upright or the resultant rebound fallen to someone in an Ajax shirt instead of somewhat fortuitously hitting the visiting ‘keeper’s head as he lay on the line twenty minutes into the second half and Hakim Ziyech found the target instead of curling an 88th minute free kick onto the outside of the same post.

If they hadn’t already realised it beforehand, when David Neres saw his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by a covering Donny Gorter in the third minute of added time the hosts knew it wasn’t going to be their day.

Table-topping PSV Eindhoven took full advantage of Ajax’s failure to secure all three points by hitting reigning champions, Feyenoord for three at De Kuip to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the standings.

The visitors wasted little time in asserting their authority over a Feyenoord side who came into this encounter an incredible twenty points off the pace set by Phillip Cocu’s men at the top of the standings, taking the lead when an untracked Santiago Arias stooped low to glance a Steven Bergwijn cross past a static Brad Jones with twenty-three minutes on the clock.

The away side would double their advantage just twelve minutes later when Bart Nieuwkoop failed to cut out an incisive through-ball from Gaston Pereiro, allowing Bergwijn to streak clear and slip the ball past an exposed Jones.

With the chance of retaining their title now long gone, the hosts might have been forgiven for turning their attention to Wednesday night’s KNVB Beker semi-final tie with Willem II. However, when half time replacement, Jean-Paul Boëtius hit the by-line and cut the ball back for Tonny Vilhena to head the ball beyond a static Jeroen Zoet eight minutes into the second half, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men found themselves right back in the game.

Yet, any hopes the home side may have harboured of replicating their recent cup success over the men from Eindhoven were effectively ended just five minutes later when Pereiro found himself in the right place at the right time to restore the visitor’s two-goal cushion, the Uruguayan stabbing the ball into an unguarded net from the edge of the box after Jones had found Bergwijn’s initial effort too hot to handle.

Elsewhere, a 14th minute strike from AZ Alkmaar loanee, Ben Rienstra ultimately proved just enough to see Willem II move six points clear of the bottom three after edging out fellow strugglers, Roda JC at the Koning Willem II Stadion.

The twenty fifth round of action was concluded at the Stadion Galgenwaard where in-form FC Utrecht climbed into the top four by claiming a fourth-straight victory after coming from behind to hit struggling FC Twente for three.

Despite coming into this encounter four points from safety, it was the away side who struck first when Danny Holla sent Haris Vučkić clear to claim his fourth goal of the campaign in all competitions with just ten minutes on the clock.

The visitors might have doubled their advantage twelve minutes later but the Slovenian somehow contrived to send an Adam Maher cut-back sailing over the bar when presented with an open goal.

Despite the host’s slow start, normal service was resumed a minute into added time at the end of the first half when Sean Klaiber clawed the home side back on level terms by curling the ball delightfully into the top right hand corner of Joel Drommel’s net.

With Jean-Paul de Jong yet to taste defeat since taking up the reins from Erik ten Hag over the winter break and his side riding a three-game winning streak ahead of this encounter, it came as little surprise when the in-form hosts edged themselves ahead – a deft flick from Cyriel Dessers sending Sander van de Streek away to beat an onrushing Drommel and claim his third goal in his last two outings, twenty-two minutes into the second half.

Any hopes Gertjan Verbeek’s side, who face AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday evening for a place in the final of the KNVB Beker, may have harboured of taking anything from the game were effectively ended ten minutes later when van de Streek capped his second outstanding performance in as many weeks by playing a neat give and go with Yassin Ayoub which resulted in the Moroccan rifling home the host’s third from mid-way inside the visitor’s area.

Eredivisie Standouts: No. 3 – Mason Mount

It is without a doubt that the Netherlands’ three biggest club sides are AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and reigning Champions Feyenoord, however scratch beneath the surface of the Eredivisie and there continues to be a common theme year after year; a wealth of fantastic young players with raw, untapped potential.

In this new series exclusive to Total Dutch Football, Joe Donnohue looks at one of the ‘Eredivisie Standouts’ who continues to leave his mark on the league outside of the traditional ‘Big Three’ squads.

Mason Mount – Vitesse Arnhem

Chelsea’s policy of loaning young players the length and breadth of the footballing world is well-known across footballing circles. One such beneficiary, if you will, of this policy is Chelsea’s 19-year-old attacking midfielder Mason Mount.

This season the English teenager has spent the season at Vitesse Arnhem, notorious for being the recipients of many a Chelsea loanee over the past number of years. Not all are a success and some fail to adapt to life across the North Sea but Mount is beginning to look like a real contender for the odd cameo in Chelsea’s first team.

Mount has three goals in his last seven Eredivisie matches, claiming the Man of the Match award in three of his last nine.

The 19-year-old was largely restricted to brief appearances from the Vitesse bench at the beginning of the season managing just 107 league minutes by the time November arrived. However, since then Mount has started all but one of Vitesse’s league games and it has paid dividends for both the team and the player.

Four goals followed which brought his overall tally to six for the season, along with two assists. Mount has not missed a single minute of Eredivisie action since the 19th November 2017, a stretch which has seen Vitesse win five times and draw three in 12 matches, including a dazzling display in the most recent victory over reigning champions Feyenoord.

In terms of direct goal involvement, Mount has been involved in nine Vitesse goals this season, which trumps his four goals and three assists in last season’s Premier League 2 campaign for Chelsea’s U-23 side. This has been achieved in 500 fewer minutes too, highlighting his progression as a footballer over the past year.

The England U-19 international operates in an advanced role, often just behind the striker Tim Matavz.

Having had only one season of U-23 under his belt, it was anticipated that Mount wouldn’t play a starring role in Vitesse’s season, rather it would instead be a growth experience and he would be around the first team but limited to opportunities from the bench.

Mount has shown resolve to fight for a regular berth in Vitesse’s team and maintain it with good performances. Averaging 2.5 Key Passes per 90, it is clear that Mount has natural ability to accurately find a teammate and also vision that not all players possess.

Image result for mason mount

This is evident when watching the teenager’s performances. He displays a clear poise and comfortability on the ball. At times his passing decisions are questionable but that can be attributed to his confidence at attempting difficult passes when perhaps there is a simpler option available.

A great deal of Mount’s key passes come from set pieces, either from free-kicks or corners. As Vitesse’s designated taker of set pieces Mount clearly has superior technique to many of his senior teammates despite being many years their junior.

Going back to his audacity to attempt more difficult manoeuvres, this is reflected in his dribbling statistics. In the Europa League particularly, Mount likes to open his legs and take on his opponents, averaging close to three successful dribbles per 90. His success rate at this is one of the competition’s highest at 92%.

This data is possibly not as representative as his Eredivisie statistics given the fact that he has played only 367 minutes in Europe this season, as opposed to his 1200 in the league. It is still impressive, nonetheless, especially considering his success rate in the league is still relatively high at 70%.

Mount’s shooting accuracy is very impressive, having scored six league goals from just 13 shots on target. This is notable for a number of reasons, even more so given the fact that he frequently takes free-kicks in shooting territory. His free-kick which looped over the PEC Zwolle goalkeeper at the end of January showed either a stroke of good fortune or exceptional vision and technique.

The Chelsea loanee is a talent, that much is clear. He has struggled to replicate his Eredivisie output in the Europa League, potentially hinting at the fact that he is not ready to play at a higher level at this moment in time. Although, given his progression over the past year and exposure to first team football in a competitive environment, there appears to be a strong correlation.

One thing is clear; once Mount returns to Stamford Bridge his days of regular football in the U-23’s is over. He has demonstrated his ability to play – and shine – at a much higher level.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Twenty-Four

Header-EredivisieReport

The twenty fourth round of Eredivisie action got underway on Friday evening at De Koel where visiting, FC Groningen came from behind to snatch a vital point from their clash with VVV Venlo to move seven points clear of the bottom three ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

With a late push for a place in the end-of-season UEFA Europa League play-offs not completely out of the question, it took Vito van Crooij just two minutes to put the home side into the ascendency with a low drive from just inside the area after the 22-year-old had been found in acres of space by Lennart Thy.

However, the visitors, who announced earlier in the week that 35-year-old Danny Buijs would succeed the outgoing Ernest Faber at the helm next term, who arrived in Venlo without a win since the turn of the year and with just six points separating them from Roda JC in 16th would claw their way back onto level terms just thirteen minutes later when Gamba Osaka loanee, Ritsu Doan capped a marauding burst into the area by first, turning Nils Röseler inside out and then beating Lars Unnerstall with a low drive to ultimately secure a vital point in the away side’s quest to retain their top-flight status.

However, the hosts, for whom this point saw them close the gap between themselves and Vitesse Arnhem, who currently occupy the last of the UEFA Europa League play-off places, to six points, might have snatched the win late on had Röseler found the back of the net instead of heading a Clint Leemans corner against Sergio Padt’s crossbar fourteen minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action began at the GelreDome where visiting, Excelsior came from behind to snatch all three points.

Having won three of their last four, it took hosts, Vitesse Arnhem just two minutes to break the deadlock when last week’s two-goal hero, Bryan Linssen headed an over-hit cross from Fankaty Dabo back for Luc Castaignos to claim just his third of the campaign in all competitions with a spectacular bicycle kick.

However, despite coming into this encounter without a win in their last four outings, the away side would claw their way back onto level terms just short of the interval when Hicham Faik beat Remko Pasveer with a speculative effort from well outside the area and things would get even better for Mitchell van der Gaag’s side in the 66th minute when, with a marauding run from Stanley Elbers having left the home rear guard at sixes and sevens, an attempted clearance from Lassana Faye struck Mike van Duinen and ended up in the back of the host’s unguarded net to edge the visitors into what would ultimately prove to be an unassailable lead.

Elsewhere, high-flying AZ Alkmaar got back to winning ways by hitting a resurgent NAC Breda for three at the Rat Verlegh Stadion.

Despite drawing a blank in Venlo last time out, the away side would break the deadlock shortly after the half hour mark when Wout Weghorst laid the ball off for Alireza Jahanbakhsh to rifle his twelfth of the campaign into the roof of Nigel Bertrams’ net from just inside the area.

John van den Brom’s men might have doubled their advantage just three minutes after taking the lead but, have been picked out by a pinpoint cut-back from a marauding Jonas Svensson, Guus Til saw his fierce drive from just outside the box come back off Bertrams’ crossbar.

The visitors would effectively wrap up the points with two goals in the space of five minutes early in the second half when, with Oussama Idrissi having teed up Til to double the away side’s advantage with a speculative effort from well outside the area that took a wicked deflection off Manchester City loanee, Angelino two minutes after the restart, the 21-year-old would then square the ball for Mats Seuntjens to claim AZ’s third of the evening in the 52nd minute with deceptive drive from range that left the home ‘keeper red faced.

Having announced his arrival by posting a goal and an assist in the host’s six-goal thrashing of Heracles, Roma loanee, Umar Sadiq would again provide some welcome punch from the bench when the Nigerian reduced the arrears five minutes from time by stabbing the ball home from close range after Marco Bizot had failed to hold on to his initial header before coming within a whisker of bagging a second when his curling effort was denied by the visiting ‘keeper’s crossbar in the third minute of added time.

Image result for PSV Eindhoven 2-2 SC Heerenveen

It was a game of two halves in Eindhoven where, despite the hosts racing into a two-goal lead, the 45th minute dismissal of Hirving Lozano opened the door for visiting, Heerenveen to snatch an unlikely point against table-topping PSV.

With just one defeat in their last ten outings in all competitions, when first, Santiago Arias nodded home a Hirving Lozano corner to open the scoring for the hosts in the 34th minute before Mauro Junior capitalised on some loose play from Kik Pierie by dispossessing the17-year-old just outside the visitor’s area and slipping in Luuk de Jong to double the home side’s advantage just nine minutes later, another three points appeared to be in the bag for Phillip Cocu’s side.

However, when Lozano, who had been given his marching orders in the reverse fixture between the sides in early September in which Jurgen Streppel’s men had inflicted a first league defeat on the men from Eindhoven, was shown a straight red card by referee, Dennis Higler after the Mexican appeared to strike Lucas Woudenberg in the face as the two battled for the ball on the stroke of half time, what seemed a routine victory ultimately proved to be anything but for the Eredivisie pacesetters.

Despite taking just one point from the last six available, the visitors would make their numerical advantage count to claw their way back into the game eleven minutes after the restart when an unmarked Stijn Schaars ghosted in to side-foot home an Arber Zeneli corner from just inside the area before Reza Ghoochannejhad found himself in the right place at the right time to snatch an unlikely point for the away side eight minutes from time when the Iranian international capitalised on the chaos caused by Morten Thorsby’s initial attempt to stab the ball into an unguarded net at the second time of asking after his initial flick-on had been met with a weak punch from Jeroen Zoet.

Despite being a man down, the hosts might have grabbed all three points late on but Martin Hansen got down smartly to toe a de Jong header onto the inside of his right hand upright six minutes from time to preserve a hard-earned point for the visitors.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded in The Hague where a 92nd minute spot kick from Abdenasser El Khayati sealed a come-from-behind victory for hosts, ADO Den Haag over struggling, Willem II.

Despite posting just one league victory from their last nine outings and having a covering Darryl Lachman to thank when the 28-year-old was in the right place at the right time to block a goal-bound effort from Lex Immers, after the former Feyenoord man had weaved his way through a number of would-be challengers and taken the ball around an exposed Mattijs Branderhorst with twenty two minutes on the clock at the Cars Jeans Stadion, it was the visitors who were the first to strike when ADO loanee, Thomas Meißner came back to haunt his parent club by cutting the ball back for Fran Sol to put Erwin van de Looi’s side ahead five minutes before the break.

However, having seen play-off rivals, Vitesse slip up earlier in the evening, the hosts weren’t about to pass up the opportunity to close the gap between themselves and Henk Fraser’s side and despite Bjørn Johnsen seeing a 56th minute header come back off the foot of Branderhorst’s right hand upright, would find themselves back on level terms in the 69th minute when the Norwegian forward nodded home a pinpoint cross from Abdenasser El Khayati to claim his seventh of the campaign in all competitions.

Then, with the game seemingly destined to end all square, Konstantinos Tsimikas pulled Immers to the ground inside the area as the 31-year-old attempted to get on the end of a Johnsen flick-on in the first minute of added time, leaving referee, Joey Kooij little choice but to award the hosts a penalty which El Khayati duly converted to edge Alfons Groenendijk’s men to within two points of the UEFA Europa League play-off places.

Sunday’s action began in Kerkrade where FC Utrecht temporarily edged their way into fourth after hitting struggling Roda JC for four at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion.

With the visitors yet to taste defeat under Jean-Paul de Jong, it didn’t take long for the away side to assert their authority over their relegation-threatened hosts and, buoyed by posting back-to-back home victories ahead of making the trip to Kerkrade, when Mateusz Klich chipped the ball through for Sander van de Streek to open the scoring with a delightful lob just short of the quarter hour mark, Utrecht didn’t look back.

The away side would double their lead twelve minutes into the second half when Mark van der Maarel found himself in the right place at the right time to smash home the rebound after Hidde Jurjus had done well to deny Zakaria Labyad’s initial effort with his outstretched left foot before an untracked van de Streek swept home a Klich cross to bag his second and the visitor’s third just six minutes later.

Despite second half substitute, Jorn Vancamp weighing in with his fourth goal in his last six outings in all competitions seven minutes from time it was the visitors who would have the last word when another substitute, Cyriel Dessers, found an unmarked Labyad, who, having been afforded an abundance of time and space inside the home side’s area, beat an exposed Jurjus to claim his thirteenth of the campaign in all competitions.

However, despite Utrecht posting a third win in as many games, it was reigning champions, Feyenoord who would end the weekend in fourth place after a 59th minute strike from Robin van Persie edged Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s under-performing charges to victory over a dogged Heracles.

Despite the end result, a shock could well have been on the cards at De Kuip had the agility of Brad Jones not come to the host’s rescue ten minutes into the second half when the 34-year-old tipped a Kristoffer Peterson drive onto his own crossbar before getting up smartly to deny Brandley Kuwas as the 25-year-old looked set to put away the rebound.

With the shock defeat at the hands of VVV and last weekend’s capitulation at the hands of Vitesse still fresh in the minds of the Feyenoord faithful, the discontent continued to build until just short of the hour when Tonny Vilhena squared the ball for Robin van Persie to cap his first start since making his return to Rotterdam by curling home his second goal of his second spell with the club to secure a much needed three points for the hosts and alleviate the previously mounting pressure on van Bronckhorst.

At the same time a scrambled effort from Haris Vučkić five minutes from time denied rock-bottom, Sparta Rotterdam all three points in their clash with relegation rivals, FC Twente.

With the two sides separated by just two points ahead of this encounter, it looked as though the Dick Advocaat’s men were set to move off the foot of the standings at the expense of their hosts when, having come on as a half time replacement, debutant, Michiel Kramer chipped the ball through for Fred Friday to open the scoring in the 62nd minute.

Yet the away side would ultimately end the weekend where they had begun it – propping up the rest, when Haris Vučkić forced a knock-down from Hidde ter Avest past an exposed Jannik Huth from close range to snatch the hosts a share of the spoils, seconds after an Adam Maher corner had sent alarm bells ringing in the Sparta box, five minutes from time.

Advocaat’s men might even have left empty handed had second half substitute, Danny Holla’s 94th minute effort found the back of the net instead of cannoning back off a static Huth’s crossbar.

Image result for PEC Zwolle 0-1 AFC Ajax

The twenty fourth round of Eredivisie action was concluded at the MAC3PARK Stadion where title-chasing Ajax took full advantage of table-topping PSV’s slip-up against Heerenveen on Saturday evening by coming away from their encounter with PEC Zwolle with a fourth successive victory to move within five points of Phillip Cocu’s side.

Following a goalless opening period in which they enjoyed the majority of the chances, the visitors emerged for the second half with an added spring in their step and, just five minutes after Donny van de Beek had seen a 49th minute effort come back off the foot of Diederik Boer’s left hand upright and David Neres had somehow contrived to put the rebound over the bar when presented with an open goal seconds later, the away side would break the deadlock when Ajax’s Brazilian starlet made amends for his earlier miss by slipping in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for his tenth of the campaign.

The visitor’s margin of victory could have been even greater had a speculative effort from well outside the area by Justin Kluivert found the back of the net instead of cannoning off Boer’s crossbar on the hour and it was a similar story three minutes later when the 18-year-old’s miss-hit cross very nearly left the former Ajax ‘keeper red in the face.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Twenty-Three

Header-EredivisieReport

With the midweek round of fixtures having only concluded on Thursday evening, the twenty third round of action in the Dutch top flight got underway with five games on Saturday evening, the first of which saw Heracles, fresh from being hit for six by NAC Breda, get back to winning ways by edging out visiting, Willem II thanks to some quick thinking from ‘keeper, Bram Castro, whose throw set Brandley Kuwas away to slip in Vincent Vermeij for the 23–year-old to claim his third goal in his last four outings on the stroke of half time.

At the same time, two goals in the space of five first half minutes ultimately proved enough to see FC Utrecht post back-to-back victories for the first time under the stewardship of Jean-Paul de Jong.

It took the home side just seventeen minutes to break the deadlock when, having stolen a march on Philippe Sandler and drawn the attentions of an onrushing Diederik Boer, Sander van de Streek would square the ball for an unmarked Gyrano Kerk to roll his sixth of the campaign in all competitions into an unguarded net.

The hosts would double their advantage just five minutes later when Zakaria Labyad found himself in the right place at the right time to squeeze the ball home after Sandler’s attempted block of a Mark van der Maarel effort cannoned off Boer and into the 24-year-old’s path.

Despite ending a run of three successive defeats by securing victory over Heerenveen last time out, PEC Zwolle failed to build on Tuesday’s win despite being handed a late route back into the game when, having seen second half substitute, Queensy Menig go tumbling in the area following a clumsy challenge from Ramon Leeuwin, Mustafa Saymak stepped up to smash home the resultant spot kick in the second minute of added time.

Elsewhere a double from Steven Bergwijn saw PSV Eindhoven come from behind to take all three points against rock-bottom Sparta Rotterdam and move ten points clear at the top of the standings ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

Despite only winning one of their last twelve, a shock appeared to be on the cards when Kenneth Dougall nodded home a Paco van Moorsel cross to open the scoring for the hosts after the visitors could only partially clear their lines following a corner from the right with just six minutes on the clock.

However, normal service was resumed four minutes before the break when the persistence of Mauro Junior saw the ball land at the feet of Steven Bergwijn who restored parity for the Eredivisie pacesetters by curling the ball beyond the reach of Jannik Huth from just outside the area before the 20-year-old completed the turnaround eleven minutes into the second half by smashing a perfectly weighted knock down from Luuk de Jong beyond the reach of the home ‘keeper from just outside the area.

However, a hat trick would elude the young forward late on when his shot came back off Huth’s crossbar in the third minute of added time.

Having watched Dick Advocaat’s side fail to take anything earlier in the evening, fellow strugglers, Roda JC looked to have taken full advantage when, having capped a strong run by playing a neat give and go with the in-form Jorn Vancamp, Maecky Ngombo nodded home his first of the season to put Robert Molenaar’s side into the driving seat ten minutes before the break against Heerenveen.

The hosts might have gotten back on level terms just five minutes after falling behind but Stijn Schaars saw his rasping free kick come back off Hidde Jurjus’ crossbar.

However, the visitors would ultimately have to settle for a point when a lovely back heel from substitute, Henk Veerman allowed Arber Zeneli to cap off a move he had earlier set in motion and restore parity for the hosts by weaving his way through the last of the visitor’s back line sixteen minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded with VVV Venlo holding high-flying, AZ Alkmaar to a goalless draw at the AFAS Stadion.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the Johan Cruijff ArenA where a Lasse Schone spot kick nineteen minutes from time ultimately proved the difference between title-chasing Ajax and struggling FC Twente.

Despite getting off to the perfect start when, having set David Neres away down the left, Justin Kluivert was on hand to finish the move he started when Donny van de Beek turned the Brazilian’s deep cross back into the path of the 18-year-old with just three minutes on the clock, the hosts would fail to build on their early supremacy and find themselves pegged back in the 66th minute when, having misjudged a long clearance from Joel Drommel, Joel Veltman allowed Tom Boere to steal a march before turning the ball inside for Adnane Tighadouini to restore parity for Gertjan Verbeek’s struggling side who had found themselves second off bottom prior to kick off.

However, the hosts would be handed the opportunity to restore their lead just five minutes later when a clumsy challenge from Peet Bijen sent Hakim Ziyech tumbling just inside the area, leaving referee, Serdar Gözübüyük with little choice but to award the home side a penalty.

It was left to Lasse Schone to convert the resultant spot kick by sending Drommel, the hero of the penalty shoot-out that decided December’s KNVB Beker tie between the sides, the wrong way to leave Ajax seven points adrift of table-topping PSV and Twente four points from safety.

Despite drawing a blank after hitting Heracles for six on Wednesday evening, NAC Breda were more than happy to take a point from their goalless encounter with Excelsior at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion which saw Stijn Vreven’s side move three points clear of the bottom three.

Things might have been different for the hosts had a rasping drive from Hicham Faik found the back of the net instead of clipping the outside of the returning Nigel Bertrams’ left hand upright with just seven minutes on the clock and, what looked to be a fine headed finish from Mike van Duinen two minutes into the second half, not been chalked off by referee, Danny Makkelie after his assistant adjudged Stanley Elbers’ cross to have gone out of play before finding the head of the 26-year-old.

Image result for Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 Feyenoord

While there mightn’t have been much to write home about in Rotterdam, the same could not be said for events at the GelreDome where Vitesse Arnhem came from a goal down to hit nine-man Feyenoord for three.

Having put last Sunday’s defeat at the hands of VVV behind them by hitting Groningen for three on Thursday evening, reigning Eredivisie champions Feyenoord appeared to be on track to record back-to-back league victories for the first time since the turn of the year when Tonny Vilhena put the visitors ahead in the 21st minute with his third goal in his last five games in all competitions after Bilal Başaçıkoğlu flicked a Steven Berghuis cross into the path of the unmarked 23-year-old.

However, having seen their lead threatened when Mat Miazga saw his looping header strike the top of Brad Jones’ crossbar shortly before the half hour mark, the away side would see their advantage wiped out two minutes before the break when another man on loan from Chelsea, Mason Mount picked out the head of Guram Kashia, who duly claimed his third of the campaign by forcing the ball past Jones from a few yards out.

With the game in the balance, a rash lunge from Başaçıkoğlu saw the balance of power shift in favour of the home side as, just seconds after referee, Dennis Higler had given the 22-year-old a straight red card for his challenge on Thulani Serero, a quickly taken free kick found its way to new signing, Roy Beerens whose wayward effort unwittingly picked out the head of an untracked Bryan Linssen to put the hosts into a 66th minute lead.

With the visitors lucky not to find themselves further behind sixteen minutes from time when Linssen turned Mount’s driven corner onto the top of Jones’ crossbar, any hopes Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side may have harboured of taking anything from the game were effectively ended nine minutes from time when first half replacement, Tyrell Malacia was also shown a straight red after bringing down a breaking Beerens.

Again, the hosts would waste little time in making their numerical advantage count when Linssen claimed his second of the night and three vital points in the home side’s quest to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League play-off places by nodding home a Beerens cross just five minutes later.

That victory over the reigning champions proved especially important for Henk Fraser’s side after fellow European hopefuls, ADO Den Haag were held goalless in Groningen in a match which rounded out the twenty third round of action in the Dutch top flight and left the men from The Hague five points adrift of seventh place, Vitesse, who occupy the final play-off place.

In a match that swung from end to end with alarming regularity throughout, it was the visitors who were the first to threaten when Bjørn Johnsen was denied on the line by a covering Deyovaisio Zeefuik with just two minutes on the clock at the Noordlease Stadion before having a last-ditch block from Abdenasser El Khayati to thank for keeping them on level terms shortly before the quarter hour mark when the 29-year-old was on hand to clear Tom van de Looi’s goal-bound header off the line.

However, Alfons Groenendijk’s side might have snatched all three points had Danny Bakker’s header found the back of Sergio Padt’s net instead of clipping the home ‘keeper’s crossbar two minutes before the break.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Twenty-Two

Header-EredivisieReport

The season’s second round of midweek fixtures got underway on Tuesday evening at the MAC3PARK Stadion where hosts, PEC Zwolle withstood a late comeback from in-form Heerenveen to claim all three points in a five-goal thriller.

Despite having shipped eight goals in their last two outings in all competitions, the home side got off to a perfect start when Wouter Marinus stooped low to head home a Youness Mokhtar cross in the 23rd minute and things would get even better for the hosts just five minutes later when Mokhtar picked out the run of Younes Namli with a perfectly weighted ball that left the visitor’s rear guard powerless to prevent the 23-year-old streaking clear and rounding an exposed Martin Hansen to double his side’s advantage.

Image result for PEC Zwolle 3-2 SC Heerenveen

However, having taken seven points from the last nine, the visitors weren’t about to roll over and clawed themselves back into the match in the 69th minute when Arber Zeneli cut in from the left and picked out an untracked Denzel Dumfries for the full back to bag his second goal in his last three outings.

Yet, any hopes the away side may have harboured of making a comeback looked to have been dashed four minutes later when Mustafa Saymak caught Hansen out at his near post with a deceptive drive seconds after the visiting ‘keeper had hared off his line to deny the tricky Mokhtar, who had found himself one-on-one with Heerenveen’s Danish stopper after turning Daniel Høegh inside out following some poor control from Dumfries just outside the area.

Although the hosts would ultimately hold on to snap a three-game losing streak and reclaim fourth place in the standings from Feyenoord ahead of the rest of the mid-week fixtures, a marauding Dumfries would ensure a tense finish and make amends for his earlier error by hitting the by-line and pulling the ball back for an unmarked Reza Ghoochannejhad to reduce the arrears for the visitors ten minutes from time.

Wednesday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the Stadion Galgenwaard where an 85th minute effort from super-sub, Lukas Görtler – just two minutes after the German forward had been brought on to replace Gyrano Kerk, handed Jean-Paul de Jong his first victory since succeeding Erik ten Hag as coach of FC Utrecht at the expense of rock-bottom Sparta Rotterdam.

Meanwhile, with closest challengers, Ajax not playing until later in the night, a 17th minute effort from Hirving Lozano, following a deft back-heel from Luuk de Jong, ultimately proved enough to see PSV Eindhoven past a determined Excelsior to open up a ten-point lead at the top of the standings.

Having weathered an early onslaught by the visitors who had been unlucky not to have taken the lead when Mike van Duinen saw his close-range effort come back off Jeroen Zoet’s crossbar with just six minutes on the clock, the host’s margin of victory might have been greater had Jurgen Mattheij not been in the right place at the right time to block a goal-bound header from Steven Bergwijn on the line eleven minutes before the break.

Elsewhere, in-form AZ Alkmaar recorded their fifth win from their last seven outings in all competitions by hitting an undermanned FC Twente for four at De Grolsch Veste.

However, the visitor’s eventual margin of victory was somewhat misleading as despite taking a tenth minute lead when Iranian international, Alireza Jahanbakhsh converted from the spot shortly after Haris Vučkić had sent Guus Til tumbling in the area, the game could have gone either way until Cristian Cuevas’ was given his marching orders in the 72nd minute by referee, Siemen Mulder after picking up his second caution of the match following a rash challenge on Joris van Overeem.

Despite coming within a whisker of restoring parity when Jonas Svensson cleared a goal-bound effort by Vučkić off the line three minutes before the 22-year-old’s sending off, the visitor’s numerical advantage ultimately told late on when, having already doubled the away side’s advantage in the 89th minute, Wout Weghorst curled his second of the night into the top left hand corner of Joel Drommel’s net a minute into added time before Mats Seuntjens set Jahanbakhsh away to claim his second of the game two minutes later.

In one of the night’s late kick-off’s, Willem II hit VVV Venlo for three to move four points clear of the bottom three.

Despite snatching a famous victory late-on against reigning Eredivisie champions, Feyenoord on Sunday afternoon, VVV were never really in the running in Tilburg and would find themselves a goal down when Bartholomew Ogbeche handed the hosts the lead a minute before the break – the Nigerian stabbing the ball home from close range to claim his tenth of the campaign in all competitions seconds after Damian van Bruggen had sparked a goal-mouth scramble by blocking Jordy Croux’s goal-bound effort on the line and Fran Sol had seen his attempted follow-up strike Lars Unnerstall’s right hand upright.

Buoyed by the 33-year-old’s opener, the home side would emerge for the second half with an added spring in their step and would double their advantage four minutes after the resumption when Ben Rienstra claimed his sixth of the season in all competitions with a low drive from just outside the area before Croux punished Unnerstall for failing to field his corner in spectacular fashion by slamming the ball into an unguarded net from wide on the right in the 53rd minute.

At the same time, there were remarkable scenes at the Rat Verlegh Stadion where struggling NAC Breda hit an undermanned Heracles for six to move three points clear of the bottom three.

Despite coming into this encounter with just one win in their last seven outings, it took the hosts just four minutes to open the scoring when an unmarked Rai Vloet stole in at the back post to volley home an Angelino cross and claim his fifth of the campaign in all competitions.

Indeed, there was little indication of the remarkable scenes that would later unfold when Vincent Vermeij restored parity for the visitors by stabbing home a Roland Baas cross from close range just nine minutes later.

However, having taken just five minutes to restore their advantage when Thierry Ambrose drilled the ball home after a poor punch from Bram Castro had sparked bedlam in the away side’s area following a Manu Garcia corner from the left, the home side would extend their lead five minutes into the second half when, having capitalised on some loose play from Dries Wuytens just inside the home side’s half, Garcia would sprint half the length of the field and leave a number of would-be challengers trailing in his wake before poking home the host’s third from just outside the box.

Any hopes the visitors may have harboured of staging a comeback were dispelled sixteen minutes from time when Tim Breukers was given his marching orders by referee, Kevin Blom after picking up his second caution of the match following a rash lunge on Garcia.

It would take the home side just four minutes to make their numerical advantage count when Mounir El Allouchi picked out an unmarked Mitchell te Vrede on the edge of the box to slide number four past an exposed Castro as the visitor’s looked in vain for a flag which never came.

Having teed up the home side’s fourth, following a nice give-and-go with freshly recruited Roma loanee, Umar Sadiq, who had only been on the field for two minutes, El Allouchi would cap a mazy run by increasing the home side’s advantage three minutes later.

Not content with merely registering an assist on his debut, the Nigerian forward would put the seal on a remarkable performance by Stijn Vreven’s side by posting his first goal in NAC colours after being sent clear by an incisive through ball from Ambrose just two minutes later.

There was little to cheer for another struggling side however as Ajax came from a goal down to hit Roda JC for four at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion.

With the game just two minutes old, the hosts were gifted the perfect start when Andre Onana palmed a Mikhail Rosheuvel cross into the path of Feyenoord loanee, Simon Gustafson, whose shot just about crossed the line before the intervention of a covering Frenkie de Jong.

However, just nine minutes later, the visitors would claw themselves back onto level terms when a marauding Nicolas Tagliafico cut the ball back for Donny van de Beek to poke home his eleventh of the campaign in all competitions before a spectacular 24th minute drive from well outside the area by Hakim Ziyech put the away side into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Erik ten Hag’s men would extend their lead further sixteen minutes from time when van de Beek slipped Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in behind the home defence with an incisive through ball for the former Dutch international to round Hidde Jurjus and claim his ninth of the season.

However, just when it appeared as though the points were heading back to Amsterdam, a slip by Frenkie de Jong allowed Maecky Ngombo to hit the by-line and cut the ball back for second half substitute, Jorn Vancamp to side-foot home his third goal in his last four appearances in all competitions ten minutes from time.

Yet, any hopes the home side may have harboured of snatching a late share of the spoils were dispelled just two minutes later when Tagliafico capped another raid into the home side’s area by picking out an unmarked Huntelaar for the 34-year-old to stroke home his second of the night from just outside the box.

Thursday’s Eredivisie action began with ADO Den Haag narrowly edging out fellow European hopefuls, Vitesse Arnhem to move within three points of their guests (who currently occupy the last of the UEFA Europa League play-off places) after a swift counter attack, set in motion by the vision of Abdenasser El Khayati, was capped off by a streaking Sheraldo Becker nine minutes into the second half at the Cars Jeans Stadion.

Image result for Feyenoord 3-0 FC Groningen

The twenty second round of action was concluded at De Kuip where three second half goals saw reigning champions, Feyenoord get back to winning ways at the expense of visiting, FC Groningen.

Despite the eventual result it was the visitors who would come closest to breaking the deadlock in a goalless opening period when a Yoell van Nieff free kick cannoned back off Brad Jones’ crossbar with just three minutes on the clock.

However, having failed to record a victory since Christmas Eve, when an untracked Jens Toornstra ghosted in at the back post and volleyed home a perfectly weighted cross from first half replacement, Bilal Başaçıkoğlu to open the scoring for the hosts eight minutes into the second half, Ernest Faber’s troops never really looked like getting back into the game and when Steven Berghuis slipped in a marauding Jeremiah St. Juste to double the home side’s advantage eighteen minutes from time any hopes the visitors may have harboured of mounting a comeback began to fade.

Having been restricted to late cameo appearances since his return to Rotterdam at the end of January, it took Robin van Persie a matter of seconds to make his presence felt when, just seconds after replacing Jens Toornstra in the 78th minute, a neat give and go with Berghuis allowed the 34-year-old to evade the attentions of van Nieff and curl the ball beyond the reach of Sergio Padt to notch his first Eredivisie goal since re-signing for the club thirteen years and three hundred and fifty-eight days after his last strike in the Dutch top flight.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Twenty-One

Header-EredivisieReport

The twenty first round of action in the Dutch top flight got underway on Friday evening at the GelreDome where first half goals from Chelsea loanees, Matt Miazga and Mason Mount saw European hopefuls, Vitesse Arnhem claim victory in their encounter with FC Groningen.

Having taken just six minutes to break the deadlock when an untracked Matt Miazga rose highest on the edge of the box to nod home a Lassana Faye cross, the hosts would double their advantage and ultimately wrap up the points thirteen minutes before the break when a low ball from Mitchell van Bergen was beautifully left by Tim Matavz, allowing another man on loan from Stamford Bridge, Mason Mount, to steal a march on the visitor’s wrong-footed backline and claim his fourth goal in his last six games.

The host’s margin of victory might have been even greater were it not for the intervention of first half replacement, Juninho Bacuna, who found himself in the right place at the right time to deny first, Guram Kashia and then a point-blank header from Miazga on the line following a Thomas Bruns corner from the left a minute before the break.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action got underway in Friesland where a 66th minute header from Daniel Høegh ultimately proved enough to earn another side hoping to secure European football at the end of the season – Heerenveen, all three points against struggling FC Twente.

Image result for psv zwolle

Elsewhere, hat-trick hero, Luuk de Jong was the star of the show as PSV Eindhoven hit an undermanned PEC Zwolle for four to move ten points clear at the top of the table ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

The turning point of the match arrived when Mickey van der Hart – who had been given the nod in the absence of a suspended Diederik Boer, who was given his marching orders in Tuesday’s KNVB Beker quarter final loss at AZ Alkmaar, was sent off by referee, Serdar Gözübüyük after the visiting ‘keeper had sent Hirving Lozano tumbling after haring out of his area to intercept the Mexican international three minutes before the break

It wouldn’t take long for the hosts to make their numerical advantage count – Luuk de Jong rising highest at the back post to nod home a Lozano corner in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half.

Phillip Cocu’s side, who saw their chances of securing a league and cup double dashed by defeat at the hands of Feyenoord in their quarter final tie on Wednesday evening, would double their advantage in the 65th minute when, having drawn the attentions of stand-in stopper, Mike Hauptmeijer, Lozano picked out the head of an unmarked de Jong for the Dutch international to nod just his eighth of the campaign in all competitions into an unguarded net.

Having set up both goals, Lozano then came within a whisker of making it three when his effort came back off the foot of Hauptmeijer’s right hand upright just two minutes later.

However, Lozano’s miss ultimately proved to be just a temporary reprieve for John van ‘t Schip’s beleaguered side who fell further behind eighteen minutes from time when de Jong stabbed home a Joshua Brenet cross from the edge of the box to claim his hat-trick.

Having teed up the host’s third, Brenet then helped himself to number four when substitute, Albert Gudmundsson, who had only been on the field a minute after replacing Steven Bergwijn, set the host’s marauding left back away to claim his first of the season in all competitions twelve minutes from time to condemn the visitors to a second four-goal defeat in as many games while extending PSV’s lead at the top of the table to ten points ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded in Almelo where two sides with designs on crashing the end-of-season UEFA Europa League play-off party shared the spoils.

Having already come close to breaking the deadlock when Lex Immers saw his low drive come back off the foot of Bram Castro’s left hand upright with just three minutes on the clock following an Abdenasser El Khayati corner from the right, the away side would hit the front when a misdirected clearance from Jamiro Monteiro sent Bjørn Johnsen away to fire ADO Den Haag ahead with a thunderous strike from just inside the area that crashed in off the underside of Castro’s crossbar with twenty one minutes on the clock.

However, despite winning three of their last six, Alfons Groenendijk’s side failed to build on their early advantage and would ultimately have to settle for a point against a Heracles outfit whose point last time out in Groningen ended a run of three-straight defeats in all competitions, when Reuven Niemeijer clawed the out-of-form hosts back onto level terms – the 22-year-old picking out the top right hand corner of Robert Zwinkels’ net from just inside the area, nine minutes into the second half.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion where a 77th minute effort from Hicham Faik earned Excelsior a share of the spoils against visiting, FC Utrecht.

Things had begun brightly for the hosts who took the lead in the 22nd minute when Stanley Elbers slid an intended last-ditch clearance from Giovanni Troupee into the back of an unguarded net after David Jensen had hared off his line to meet an onrushing Mike van Duinen.

However, just three minutes later Zakaria Labyad picked out the head of an unmarked Mark van der Maarel at the back post to restore parity and the points appeared to be going the way of Jean-Paul de Jong’s side when Labyad edged the visitors ahead with a well-placed free kick from just outside the area seventeen minutes from time.

However, the away side’s advantage would prove to be short-lived when Hicham Faik turned Rico Strieder inside out and unleashed an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area that left Jensen grasping at thin air to claim a share of the spoils for Mitchell van der Gaag’s men just four minutes later.

Image result for VVV Venlo 1-0 Feyenoord

Elsewhere, a late Clint Leemans spot kick saw VVV Venlo snatch a memorable victory over reigning champions, Feyenoord.

The game had seemingly been destined to end goalless until Renato Tapia found himself with little choice but to send second half substitute, Romeo Castelen tumbling in the area as the former Feyenoord man bore down on Brad Jones’ net leaving Clint Leemans to send the Australian the wrong way from the resultant penalty kick and bag a famous victory for the hosts two minutes from time.

At the same time, a poorly judged back-pass by Giliano Wijnaldum allowed Fred Friday to steal in and grab a 23rd minute lead that ultimately proved enough to see Sparta Rotterdam edge past fellow strugglers, Willem II to post their first victory under the stewardship of Dick Advocaat and end a run of ten games without a win.

The host’s margin of victory could have been more emphatic had Sander Fischer’s 63rd minute header found the back of the net instead of striking the foot of Mattijs Branderhorst’s left hand upright.

Meanwhile, a 71st minute effort from Borussia Mönchengladbach loanee, Tsiy William Ndenge saw another side struggling at the wrong end of the table – Roda JC, snatch an unlikely point from their encounter with in-form AZ Alkmaar.

Having won four of their last five in all competitions it came as little surprise when the home side edged themselves ahead just before the quarter hour when the unlucky Patrick Banggaard, who was making his debut for the Kerkrade-based outfit after arriving on loan from Darmstadt during the January transfer window, diverted a low Thomas Ouwejan cross into his own net.

However, the host’s lead would last just eight minutes when a Dani Schahin flick-on allowed Jorn Vancamp, who only opened his account for the season a week earlier in Roda’s victory over Excelsior, to escape the attentions of Pantelis Hatzidiakos and bag his second goal of the campaign with a thunderous strike from just inside the area.

Despite finding themselves pegged back the home side would edge themselves ahead once more when Fredrik Midtsjø left Hidde Jurjus rooted to the spot with a spectacular effort from well outside the area nine minutes before the break.

Yet the hosts would ultimately be denied a third-straight victory in all competitions when a low drive from Tsiy William Ndenge marginally crossed the line after hitting the inside of Marco Bizot’s right hand upright nineteen minutes from time.

Image result for AFC Ajax 3-1 NAC Breda

The twenty first round of action was concluded at the Johan Cruijff ArenA where Ajax got back to winning ways by coming from behind to hit an undermanned NAC Breda for three.

Despite hitting the same opposition for eight without replay when the two sides met in the reverse fixture at the Rat Verlegh Stadion in mid-November, a shock appeared to be on the cards early on when Thierry Ambrose lashed a deflected knock-down from Lucas Schoofs past Andre Onana from the edge of the area with just six minutes on the clock.

However, the visitor’s advantage would last just nineteen minutes when Justin Kluivert, having turned Arno Verschueren inside out, picked out the head of an unmarked Donny van de Beek on the edge of the box before a fine solo effort from David Neres saw the hosts complete the turnaround six minutes before the break – the Brazilian capitalising on a wayward pass from Manu Garcia, gliding past Pablo Mari and holding off the attentions of first, Garcia and then Bart Meijers before beating the visitor’s Australian ‘keeper with a low drive from just outside the area.

Despite taking the lead the home side would make heavy weather of killing the game off until a rash lunge from the already booked Meijers on Hakim Ziyech resulted in the centre half being given his marching orders by referee, Ed Janssen in the first minute of added time before Ziyech curled the resultant free kick past an unsighted Birighitti from just outside the area a minute later to reduce PSV’s advantage at the top of the table to seven points ahead of the season’s second round of midweek fixtures.

Eredivisie Standouts: No. 2 – Clint Leemans

With an eye for talent, Joe Donnohue looks at a young player who continues to leave his mark on the league outside of the traditional ‘Big Three’ squads.

Image result for clint leemans vvv

Clint Leemans – VVV-Venlo

A player who has excited spectators in the Eredivisie this campaign is former PSV youngster Clint Leemans. 2017/18 is Leemans’ first campaign in the Netherlands’ top division, but the 22-year-old doesn’t play as though that is the case.

Despite being just 22, Leemans had accumulated 130 Dutch Jupiler League appearances before the beginning of this season. Without a doubt Leemans was one of the Jupiler League’s standout performers last season as he helped guide VVV-Venlo back to the Eredivisie.

The key role that he has adopted in VVV’s side is no surprise to anybody who watched him for Jong PSV or last season, rather what has been most surprising is his almost seamless transition to top division football with no prior experience.

Leemans has cemented himself as an essential part of this VVV side, with many of their attacks transitioning through the lofty Dutchman. Standing at 1.89m tall, Leemans is an imposing figure but retains a distinct nimble quality in his style of play. His ability to play through a teammate with a seemingly innocuous, but perfectly weighted pass has been seen time and time again for the Yellow and Black Army.

Leemans’ leading role does not cease in his position as VVV’s box-to-box playmaker where he is deployed to rake balls from left to right and front to back. His influence extends to the penalty spot and to set pieces which he is considerably adept at converting; one free-kick and four penalties to his name this season. At just 22, Leemans has a considerable responsibility on his shoulders as VVV’s designated penalty taker, but his composure and poise in every one of his appearances this season has more than justified the decision to bestow upon him such an influential role.

Set-piece delivery is an excellent asset of his, causing havoc in opposition penalty areas. Leemans’ floated, trajectory-considered deliveries are difficult to adequately defend against and to properly clear, making VVV a threat from free-kicks in particular.

Of all players to have amassed over 1000 Eredivisie minutes this season, Leemans ranks sixth on the list for accurate long key passes per 90 with 1.0 and is one of two players under the age of 23 to manage that feat.

Image result for clint leemans

One of the most aesthetic aspects of Leemans’ game is his nous for spotting a run that none of the opposition defenders are wise to. Not only does this give VVV an edge but it showcases the midfielder’s heightened natural ability above those on the field. One instance of this was in VVV’s 1-0 win at Roda in December 2017, where a deft outside-of-the-boot pass found the run of teammate Torino Hunte.

Very few players are capable of executing a through ball of that nature with such precision; even fewer are able at just 22. With eight league goals and four assists in his debut Eredivisie campaign, Leemans will no doubt begin to turn heads at other Dutch clubs and potentially those abroad. For now though, he continues to put in stellar performances at De Koel.

KNVB BEKER REPORT: Quarter-FInals

Header-KNVBBekerReport

30th January – 1st February 2018

The quarter final stage of this season’s KNVB Beker got underway on Tuesday evening at De Grolsch Veste where three goals in the space of sixteen second half minutes saw FC Twente end Eerste Divisie outfit, Cambuur’s hopes of making a second successive appearance in the final four of the competition.

Having amassed a formidable cup pedigree over the course of the past two seasons, the away side appeared on course to claim yet another big scalp when Nigel Robertha sent an untracked Mathias Schils clear to slot the ball past an onrushing Joel Drommel from just inside the area to break the deadlock twelve minutes before the break.

Despite enjoying a half time lead, the visitors would find themselves pegged back just before the hour when the home side were handed the opportunity to restore parity after Martijn van der Laan pulled Tom Boere to the ground on the edge of the box, leaving Oussama Assaidi to dispatch the resultant spot kick.

Buoyed by the Moroccan’s strike, the hosts would edge themselves ahead just eight minutes later when Adam Maher curled a free kick from just outside the area into the top left hand corner of Erik Cummins’ net before striking again fourteen minutes from time with a spectacular long range effort that left the visiting ‘keeper grasping at thin air to dispel any hopes the visitors may have harboured of staging a late comeback.

Wednesday’s cup action got underway at the AFAS Stadion where four-time cup winners, AZ Alkmaar remained on course to lift the trophy for the first time since 2013 by hitting an undermanned PEC Zwolle for four.

Buoyed by having claimed their first victory since the turn of the year by scoring twice in the opening fourteen minutes of their encounter with Willem II on Sunday afternoon, it took just twenty-one minutes for John van den Brom’s men to break the deadlock when, having been set away by a long ball from Stijn Wuytens, Wout Weghorst shrugged off the attentions of Dirk Marcellis and chipped the ball delightfully over an onrushing Diederik Boer to put his side a goal to the good.

Despite Wouter Marinus restoring parity for the visitors by glancing home a skewed effort from Younes Namli on the edge of the box just ten minutes later, when an untracked Guus Til ghosted in to fire home an Oussama Idrissi corner five minutes before the break things would swing back in the home side’s favour and when visiting ‘keeper, Boer was given his marching orders by referee, Bas Nijhuis, for handling the ball outside his area after haring off his line to snuff out an Alireza Jahanbakhsh-led breakaway nine minutes after the restart, John van ‘t Schip’s side were left with the proverbial mountain to climb.

Any thoughts of a comeback were dispelled just six minutes later when, having drawn the attentions of stand-in ‘keeper, Mickey van der Hart, Weghorst picked out an unmarked Idrissi at the back post to make it three before the AZ skipper claimed his second of the evening after being slipped in by an unselfish Jahanbakhsh seconds after the Iranian international had been sent clear by an incisive through ball from Fredrik Midtsjø nineteen minutes from time.

The night’s action was concluded at De Kuip where 2016 cup winners, Feyenoord ended table-topping, PSV Eindhoven’s hopes of securing a double in the tie of the round.

The importance of this game wasn’t lost on the hosts who took just three minutes to break the deadlock when Sam Larsson beat Santiago Arias to slide the ball into an unguarded net after Jeroen Zoet could only partially block a low drive from Steven Berghuis, whose swift give and go with Nicolai Jørgensen had unhinged the visitors back line seconds earlier.

With any chance of defending their Eredivisie crown now long gone, the home side ensured that they would remain on course to add to August’s Johan Cruijff Schaal triumph when Tonny Vilhena doubled the host’s lead with a deflected strike from just outside the area after the away side could only partially clear a Larsson corner from the left ten minutes before the break.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side might have made their victory even more emphatic but, despite initially allowing a 59th minute effort by Jørgensen, referee, Pol van Boekel later chalked off the Danish international’s strike after consulting with the video referee as replays showed the 27-year-old to have strayed marginally offside as Renato Tapia set him away with an incisive through-ball.

Despite seeing Brad Jones palm a Mauro Junior free kick onto the bar just three minutes later there ultimately proved to be no coming back for PSV as the hosts held on to claim a semi-final berth.

The one remaining quarter final tie took place on Thursday evening in Tilburg where penalties were required to separate hosts, Willem II and Roda JC, with the home side edging out their guests 5-4 to claim a place in the last four of the competition.

Despite a covering Daryl Werker clearing a goal-bound effort from Fran Sol off the line thirteen minutes in and Fernando Lewis striking the foot of Hidde Jurjus’ right hand upright just three minutes later, the tie would remain scoreless until eight minutes before the break when, with Fernando Lewis having been penalised for pulling a marauding Jannes Vansteenkiste down inside the area, a nonchalantly taken spot kick from Feyenoord loanee, Simon Gustafson put the away side into a somewhat undeserving lead.

However, the visitor’s advantage would last just two minutes before Vansteenkiste’s attempted clearance of a Thom Haye free kick fell invitingly for Bartholomew Ogbeche to nod the ball beyond a static Jurjus.

The visitors would restore their advantage three minutes into the second half when Schalke loanee, Donis Avdijaj cut in from the left and unleashed a blistering drive into the top left hand corner of Mattijs Branderhorst’s net.

However, the home side would claw their way back onto level terms for a second time just after the hour when a deflected Konstantinos Tsimikas free kick found its way past Jurjus and the host’s Greek defender might have secured his side’s place in the final four in similar fashion were it not for a covering Henk Dijkhuizen, who was on hand to head the 21-year-old’s 66th minute set piece off the line.

With the game headed for extra time the away side looked to have snatched a late winner but Avdijaj’s 82nd minute effort was ruled out by the video referee, who deemed Mikhail Rosheuvel to have handled the ball earlier in the move.

The hosts might have snatched it at the death when Haye saw his volley from just outside the area clip the outside of Jurjus’ left hand upright seconds after Christian Kum had cleared an Ogbeche effort off the line when another Tsimikas free kick sparked chaos inside the visitor’s box in the first minute of added time.

Despite Mohamed El Hankouri striking the foot of Jurjus’ right hand upright with a low drive from the edge of the area seconds after replacing Haye during the break in extra time, the game would go to penalties with the decisive moment coming when, with the hosts having converted all five of their spot kicks, second half substitute, Tsiy William Ndenge saw his attempt saved by Branderhorst.

Header-EredivisieReport

Despite being handed a late cameo as an 81st minute replacement, Robin van Persie’s long-awaited Feyenoord return ultimately ended in disappointment as the reigning Eredivisie champions were held to a frustrating draw in their rearranged Round 15 clash with FC Utrecht at the Stadion Galgenwaard on Wednesday evening.

Things appeared to be going the way of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side when a speculative effort by Sam Larsson from just outside the area left David Jensen grasping at thin air after the ball took a wicked bounce on its way into the back of the host’s net with twenty-three minutes on the clock.

However, the away side would ultimately have to be content with a point after Gyrano Kerk capitalised on some ponderous play by Renato Tapia to steal in behind the visitor’s back line and beat an exposed Brad Jones four minutes before the break.

The twentieth round of Eredivisie action got underway on Friday evening in Friesland where Heerenveen came from behind to condemn rock bottom Sparta Rotterdam to an eighth straight loss.

Despite tasting defeat in each of his two outings thus far as Sparta coach, things were looking up early on for Dick Advocaat, whose side got off to the perfect start when Julian Chabot nodded in a Fred Friday flick on from close range following a corner from the left with just two minutes gone.

However, the home side would restore parity on the quarter hour mark when a marauding Arber Zeneli picked out an unmarked Reza Ghoochannejhad, who capped off a swift counter attack by tapping the ball home from close range.

In a game that could have gone either way it was the hosts who would ultimately bag the points when former Sparta defender, Denzel Dumfries cut in from the right and caught out Leonard Nienhuis with a fierce drive to the visiting ‘keeper’s near post twenty minutes into the second half to leave his old club rooted to the foot of the standings and his current employers a point outside the UEFA Europa League play-off places.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action got underway with a six-goal thriller in Groningen.

Despite edging their way into the lead twenty-eight minutes in when Jesper Drost nodded the ball into the path of Tom van Weert for the former Excelsior marksman to volley home his sixth of the campaign in all competitions, the host’s advantage would last just six minutes when a quickly taken free kick by Brahim Darri allowed Jamiro Monteiro to steal a march on the home side’s rear guard before beating Sergio Padt with a low drive from just inside the area to claw visiting, Heracles back on level terms.

However, the hosts would restore their advantage two minutes before the break when Bram Castro could only parry a low cross from Mimoun Mahi into the path of Drost, who gleefully slotted the ball home from just outside the box before extending that lead further when an incisive through-ball from Ritsu Doan sent Mahi away to turn Dries Wuytens inside out before firing the ball beyond an exposed Castro to claim his seventh of the season in all competitions on the stroke of half time.

The points appeared to be going the way of the home side until eighteen minutes into the second half when Brandley Kuwas hit the by-line and cut the ball back for an untracked Vincent Vermeij to pull John Stegeman’s side back into the game.

The visitors would complete the comeback when an over-hit cross from Robin Pröpper found the inside of Padt’s right hand upright twelve minutes from time.

Elsewhere, a fifth-straight victory in all competitions saw PSV Eindhoven extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

It took Phillip Cocu’s men just four minutes to break the deadlock in Enschede – Mexican international, Hirving Lozano nodding home a Steven Bergwijn cross at the back post to bag his fourteenth of the campaign in all competitions.

Despite their precarious league position, FC Twente kept their table-topping guests in sight until the last minute of normal time when an incisive through-ball from substitute, Mauro Junior sent a marauding Santiago Arias clear to stab the ball past an exposed Joel Drommel from just outside the box.

At the same time, a Mason Mount effort fifteen minutes from time saw Vitesse Arnhem snatch all three points against high-flying, PEC Zwolle.

Buoyed by having taken four points from their last six, it was the visitors who were first to strike at the MAC3PARK Stadion when Bryan Linssen showed some remarkable skill to flick a Thomas Bruns cross over his head before firing the ball low and hard past a static Diederik Boer to claim his ninth of the campaign in all competitions from just inside the area.

However, the hosts would claw their way back onto level terms thirteen minutes into the second half when a speculative Younes Namli effort from well outside the area caught out Remko Pasveer in the visitor’s net.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, it was Chelsea loanee, Mason Mount who ultimately proved the difference when the 19-year-old unleashed a looping free kick that left Boer grasping at thin air to snatch all three points for Henk Fraser’s side fifteen minutes from time.

Things might have been different for the hosts had second half substitute, Stef Nijland’s volley from just inside the area found the back of the net instead of clipping the outside of Pasveer’s left hand upright four minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded at the Rat Verlegh Stadion where a Lennart Thy strike seventeen minutes from time saw visiting, VVV Venlo claim all three points at the expense of struggling, NAC Breda.

Things might have been different for the hosts had a flicked header from Rai Vloet following an Angelino free kick found the back of Lars Unnerstall’s net instead of coming back off the visiting ‘keeper’s right hand upright just three minutes earlier.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at the Stadion Galgenwaard where newly appointed Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag’s return to former club, FC Utrecht ended in stalemate to leave the Amsterdam giants seven points adrift of table-topping PSV Eindhoven.

Yet the visitors might have snatched the points late on had Donny van der Beek’s goal-bound effort not been blocked by Ramon Leeuwin and Justin Kluivert’s follow-up not been headed off the line by a covering Rico Strieder after David Jensen had fumbled a Lasse Schone corner six minutes from time.

However, while there may have been no fireworks on the field of play the sparks were certainly flying off it when the already substituted, Lukas Görtler was given his marching orders by referee, Danny Makkelie a minute into added time after the previously booked German forward refused to give Justin Kluivert the ball after it had gone out for a throw in.

Elsewhere, a Dani Schahin effort six minutes into the second half ultimately proved enough to see Roda JC end a run of five league games without a win at the expense of an undermanned Excelsior.

Despite the end result, things had begun promisingly for the visitors when Milan Massop headed home a Hicham Faik free kick to open the scoring in the 16th minute.

However, the hosts, who began the day just a point above bottom-of-the-table Sparta Rotterdam, would restore parity on the stroke of half time when Mikhail Rosheuvel slipped in Jorn Vancamp for the man on loan from Anderlecht to claim his first of the campaign.

Buoyed by Vancamp’s leveller, the home side would emerge for the second half with an added spring in their step and edge themselves into what would ultimately prove to be an unassailable lead just six minutes after the restart when a pinpoint cross from Rosheuvel found the head of Dani Schahin, who beat Theo Zwarthoed to claim his eighth goal of the season in all competitions.

However, the visitors weren’t quite finished yet and might have claimed a share of the spoils had Stanley Elbers found the back of the net instead of clipping the outside of Hidde Jurjus’ right hand upright with the home ‘keeper stranded and the goal gaping following a lung-bursting run and cut-back by Mike van Duinen fourteen minutes from time.

With the points slipping away and time running out, the visitor’s misery was compounded further when Luigi Bruins received his marching orders from referee, Martin Perez after picking up his second booking of the match following a rash lunge on Donis Avdijaj.

Meanwhile, second half goals from Tonny Vilhena, Steven Berghuis and Jens Toornstra saw Feyenoord get back to winning ways at the expense of visiting, ADO Den Haag.

Following a dour opening period in which the only real chance of note saw the returning Nicolai Jørgensen strike the foot of Robert Zwinkels’ right hand upright in the 24th minute, it was the hosts who took the game by the scruff of the neck nine minutes into the second half when an untracked Tonny Vilhena headed home a Steven Berghuis cross at the back post.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side would go on to double their advantage in the 68th minute when Steven Berghuis curled the ball home from just outside the area seconds after a goal-bound effort from Jørgensen had been blocked on the line by Elson Hooi.

However, just when it appeared that the game was slipping away from Alfons Groenendijk’s side, an attempted clearance by Sven van Beek, following a corner by Abdenasser El Khayati, fell invitingly for former Feyenoord man, Lex Immers to volley the visitors right back into the game nineteen minutes from time.

Yet, having taken just one point from a possible six since the turn of the year, the reigning Eredivisie champions were in no mood to allow more points to slip through their fingers and, ten minutes from time the hosts sealed the win when a neat give and go between Berghuis and Jens Toornstra ended with the latter squeezing the ball between the fingers of an exposed Zwinkels from mid-way inside the area.

The twentieth round of Eredivisie action was concluded in Tilburg where two goals inside the opening quarter of an hour set AZ Alkmaar on the road to victory against Willem II.

Having taken just six minutes to break the deadlock when a perfectly weighted through-ball from Alireza Jahanbakhsh sent Mats Seuntjens clear to slot the ball past an onrushing Mattijs Branderhorst, the away side would go on to double their advantage just eight minutes later when Oussama Idrissi set the Iranian international away to claim his ninth of the campaign in all competitions.

The hosts believed they had reduced the arrears two minutes before the break when a header from Bartholomew Ogbeche, that was blocked by the left shoulder of a covering Seuntjens, appeared to have crossed the line.

However, despite replays clearly showing this to be the case, the home side’s appeals fell on deaf ears and, try as they might, there was no way back for Erwin van de Looi’s men thereafter as the visitors held out to cut the gap between themselves and second-placed Ajax to three points.

Eredivisie Standouts: No. 1 – Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Image result for Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Alireza Jahanbakhsh – AZ Alkmaar

One player who may not be unfamiliar to Eredivisie aficionados is Alireza Jahanbakhsh. The Iranian winger has eight league goals and seven assists for AZ Alkmaar this term and has been in terrific form. Without a doubt, Jahanbakhsh is AZ’s most valuable player and is certainly one who could ply his trade at a higher level.

To illustrate his importance to his side, without his direct contribution in terms of goals and assists, AZ would be 12 points and five league positions worse off. Jahanbakhsh’s contribution has seen AZ overachieve to an extent seeing them soar to third in the table at the time of writing, challenging Ajax for a Champions League qualification round place.

While perhaps not as prolific as the likes of PSV’s Hirving Lozano or ex-AZ man Steven Berghuis, it is rather Jahanbakhsh’s creativity that greatly supports AZ’s cause. On four occasions this season, the winger has been involved in both scoring and assisting in the same match. During October’s 3-0 victory over a strong FC Utrecht side, Jahanbakhsh scored one and assisted the other two goals to almost single-handedly secure all three points. His influence cannot be understated.

Image result for Alireza Jahanbakhsh iran

Having hit the ground running at AZ last season, Jahanbakhsh registered ten goals and nine assists in the Eredivisie, signalling that this season’s tally to date – which he is set to surpass on both counts – is no fluke. Rather, the 24-year-old looks to be gearing up before heading into his best footballing years.

Understandably with this kind of form it will be difficult for AZ to turn down potential suitors should a substantial bid be received and a World Cup with Iran will only showcase his skills further, only this time on the global scale. It will take something short of a miracle to keep the Iranian at the AFAS Stadion beyond this summer.

EREDIVISIE 2017/18 REPORT: Week Nineteen

Header-EredivisieReport

The winter break came to an early end for two Eredivisie clubs on Tuesday evening – a lone strike from Chelsea loanee, Mason Mount ultimately proving enough to see visiting, Vitesse Arnhem edge their way back into the UEFA Europa league play-off places after taking all three points from their rearranged Round 15 clash with Sparta Rotterdam at Het Kasteel.

Despite entrusting former bondscoach, Dick Advocaat with guiding them to top flight safety, the 70-year-old failed to procure a winning start to his tenure at the helm of the struggling Rotterdam-based outfit who, following a goalless opening period, fell behind in the 64th minute to what would ultimately prove to be the only goal of the game when an untracked Mason Mount bagged his fourth of the campaign by half-volleying a Milot Rashica cross past a static Roy Kortsmit from mid-way inside the area.

Things might have been different for the hosts, who go into their weekend meeting with local rivals, Excelsior, propping up the rest of the table, had Loris Brogno’s rasping drive from just inside the area found the back of the net instead of coming back off Remko Pasveer’s crossbar fourteen minutes from time.

The nineteenth round of Eredivisie action got underway on Friday evening at the Stadion Galgenwaard where, with Jonas Svensson having capitalised on the host’s inability to clear a Teun Koopmeiners corner by lashing visiting, AZ Alkmaar into a 55th minute lead with a low drive from just outside the area, the points appeared to be going the way of John van den Brom’s high-flying side until sixteen minutes from time when Cyriel Dessers smashed home a deft flick from Zakaria Labyad to earn Jean-Paul de Jong his first point since succeeding Ajax-bound Erik ten Hag as coach of FC Utrecht.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action got underway with a real relegation six-pointer in Kerkrade that, after Haris Vučkić capped a nice give and go with Oussama Assaidi by opening the scoring in the 53rd minute, appeared to be going the way of visitors, FC Twente.

The away side had been unlucky not to be break the deadlock when Hidde Jurjus turned a Tom Boere strike onto the foot of his right hand upright two minutes before the break before the former FC Oss marksman, having capitalised on a slip by Frederic Ananou, saw another effort this time clip the outside of the Roda ‘keeper’s left hand upright as his side looked to double their advantage thirteen minutes into the second half.

However, despite their overall supremacy, Gertjan Verbeek’s men would be denied all three points late on when Roda’s Dani Schahin headed home a Mikhail Rosheuvel cross to salvage a point for the hosts two minutes from time.

Elsewhere, a spectacular Youness Mokhtar strike from well outside the area with just two minutes on the clock ultimately proved enough to see high-flying, PEC Zwolle edge out struggling, NAC Breda at the MAC3PARK Stadion.

At the same time, an 86th minute strike from substitute, Johnatan Opoku saw VVV Venlo deny hosts, ADO Den Haag all three points at the Cars Jeans Stadion.

The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Alfons Groenendijk’s side, who had appeared on course to record what would have been their fourth win in their last five outings after edging themselves ahead in the 23rd minute when Bjørn Johnsen turned a Danny Bakker half volley from just outside the area past a wrong-footed Lars Unnerstall.

Indeed, when Vito van Crooij’s header came back off the foot of Robert Zwinkels’ right hand upright twenty minutes from time it appeared that it just wasn’t to be the away side’s day until second half replacement, Johnatan Opoku was sent clear by a Lennart Thy flick-on to snatch a point for the visitors four minutes from time.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded in Arnhem where it ended honours even between European hopefuls, Vitesse and Heerenveen.

Having begun the year in the best possible fashion by taking all three points from their rearranged fixture with Sparta Rotterdam on Tuesday evening, the hosts were handed an early lead when the unlucky Daniel Høegh diverted a Mason Mount cross into his own net with thirteen minutes gone.

However, Henk Fraser’s side would ultimately have to make do with a point when, having raced off his line to deny Henk Veerman, Remko Pasveer saw his block land at the feet of Pelle van Amersfoort who promptly curled the ball over the 34-year-old’s head and into the back of his unguarded net to restore parity eight minutes before the break.

Things might have been different for the home side had Thomas Bruns’ speculative effort from just outside the area found the back of Martin Hansen’s net as opposed to striking the visiting ‘keeper’s left hand upright eight minutes from time.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway at Het Kasteel where an 86th minute effort from second half replacement, Anouar Hadouir saw Excelsior edge out local rivals, Sparta Rotterdam in a five-goal thriller.

Having seen his side slip to defeat in his first outing as Sparta coach in Tuesday’s rearranged fixture with Vitesse, Dick Advocaat would have been encouraged by the start his new side made to proceedings when the unlucky Milan Massop diverted a Soufyan Ahannach corner into his own net with just two minutes on the clock.

However, it took the visitors just three minutes to claw their way back onto level terms when Ali Messaoud found himself in the right place at the right time to tap the ball into an unguarded net after a Hicham Faik free kick came back off Roy Kortsmit’s left hand upright.

Despite being pegged back, Advocaat’s charges remained undeterred and re-established their advantage from the spot three minutes before the break through Loris Brogno after Massop pulled Julian Chabot to the ground as the two jostled to get on the end of the 25-year-old Belgian’s free kick.

However, the home side’s advantage would again be short-lived when Messaoud popped up to sweep home a Stanley Elbers through-ball from midway inside the area just before the interval.

Try as they might the hosts could not fashion a third and were made to pay four minutes from time when substitute, Anouar Hadouir curled in a well-placed free kick from just outside the area to leave Advocaat’s men rooted to the foot of the table.

Having seen Ritsu Doan edge them ahead with a spectacular strike from just outside the area just short of the quarter hour and Mike te Wierik head a goal-bound Konstantinos Tsimikas effort off the line six minutes before the break, FC Groningen appeared on course to take all three points from their encounter with Willem II until nineteen minutes from time when Wolfsburg loanee, Ismail Azzaoui cut in from the left and found the corner of Sergio Padt’s net with a low drive from just inside the box.

Image result for AFC Ajax 2-0 Feyenoord

At the same time, Erik ten Hag’s reign as Ajax coach got off to the perfect start as two goals in the space of three second half minutes saw his new side sweep aside the challenge of an undermanned Feyenoord in the season’s second instalment of De Klassieker.

In a relatively uneventful opening half, it was the home side who very nearly took the lead seconds before the break when Brad Jones spilled a Joel Veltman cross into the path of Justin Kluivert whose goal-bound effort was headed off the line by a covering Sven van Beek.

The hosts would continue where they left off after the break and, just five minutes into the second half, ten Hag’s side would edge themselves ahead when new signing, Nicolas Taliafico’s deflected cross fell into the path of Donny van de Beek who had time to take a touch before firing the ball between Jones’s legs and into the back of the net.

Buoyed by van de Beek’s opener, the home side continued to press and would double their advantage just three minutes later when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar nodded home a Veltman cut back from the edge of the box.

Any hopes the reigning Eredivisie champions might have harboured of getting back into the game were dispelled five minutes later when Nicolai Jørgensen was given his marching orders by referee, Bjorn Kuipers after picking up his second caution of the game following a rash challenge on Veltman.

The nineteenth round of Eredivisie action was concluded in Almelo where a 93rd minute strike from Luuk de Jong saw table-topping, PSV Eindhoven edge out hosts, Heracles to restore their five-point advantage at the top of the standings.

With Ajax having cut their lead to two points, Phillip Cocu’s side edged themselves ahead a minute into added time at the end of the first half when Luuk de Jong headed a Hirving Lozano free kick into the path of an unmarked Steven Bergwijn.

However, the away side would find themselves pegged back in the 66th minute when Jeff Hardeveld converted from the spot after Santiago Arias sent Brahim Darri tumbling inside the area.

With time running out it appeared as though the game was set to end all square until three minutes into added time when, having stolen a march on Robin Pröpper, de Jong poked home substitute, Albert Gudmundsson’s cross to snatch all three points and restore PSV’s five-point cushion at the top of the table.

Can Newcastle land Feyenoord’s £20m Great Dane?

It emerged earlier this week that the usually financially hand-cuffed Premier League club Newcastle United were set to bid £20m for a striker.  The name of the player was a mystery until the cat was out the bag late Tuesday night. The Dutch press received a leak from Feyenoord that the player in question was indeed Danish international Nicolai Jørgensen writes Will Burns.

Image result for nicolai jorgensen

Last year’s Eredivisie top scorer with a 21 goals, Jørgensen has been valued by Martin van Geel, Feyenoord’s sporting director at £20m, but Newcastle have made a bid nowhere near that valuation as time of writing.

Now the Rotterdammers may well be playing financial hard ball, it’s understandable why. While rivals Ajax and PSV are profiting well from England’s megabucks (selling stars consistently to the Premier League), Feyenoord’s income is set to heavily diminish next term due to the incredibly likely failure to qualify for the Champions League next season. Currently sitting in fifth on 33 points, Feyenoord are 16 points behind current league leaders PSV.

Meanwhile, taking a lower offer for the Dane may be an option after bringing club legend Robin van Persie home this past week. Although the 34-year-old will be taking a pay cut from times past, he will still make a dent in the profit margins.

In this inflated world of the transfer windows, signing on-fees and agents is Jørgensen worth £20m in today’s market?  I’m no fortune teller but if Newcastle United can land the striker, this is what I see they are getting for the hefty fee…

A Proven Asset

The 27-year-old Jørgensen began his footballing journey in his homeland of Denmark as a left-winger and stayed in that position for the majority of his career. After exciting crowds, cutting inside and striding past defences during his youth career at Akademisk Boldklub, he earned a transfer to the bright lights of the Bundesliga at just aged 19 with Bayer Leverkusen. It proved to be a big step, too early as he struggled to win a starting berth in the first team and moved out on loan unsuccessfully to Kaiserslautern until returning to Denmark with FC Copenhagen.

Due to his 6ft 3inch height, he was moved into a target man role before heading to Rotterdam in June 2016 for €3.5m from Copenhagen where his presence really took them to greatness. The Løverne clinching the Danish league title two times and runner-up twice in his five years at the club. He notched a total of 51 times in 137 appearances in all competitions.

Image result for nicolai jorgensen copenhagen

He continued his trophy collecting inside just nine months in Holland, claiming the Eredivisie Golden Boot with the aforementioned 21 strikes, helping Feyenoord on their way to their first Eredivisie shield since 1999.

Now, Newcastle United have yet to win a major trophy since 1969, I’m not saying he can work a miracle to make them title contenders however he can add a lot to the team. But please don’t expect a prolific goalscorer, though he could encourage others to help fill that void.

Powerhouse and Poacher

Last season, even though he owns a towering frame, Jørgensen did not score a header, not a bad thing though as playing along with Feyenoord’s short passing football game, he displayed a great poacher’s instinct with fantastic reaction and composed, cool finishing. He possesses decent speed, great technical ability with superb passing range and link-up play. During the championship winning season in Rotterdam last year, along with notching the 21 goals – he layed on 11 assists.  His power allows him to hold a ball up and torture weaker defenders and if you have fast wingers on the counter attack, a chance is likely to be created.

After speaking to many that know all about the Danish game when playing internationally under Åge Hareide’s Denmark, Jørgensen has become an asset. After the years of possession football under Morten Olsen, Hareide changed the Danes attacking methods to a direct, physical style over the past six months and saw great results. Again, Jørgensen was a real key in this success. He showed he can provide an aerial threat, providing knock-ons for the vertical runs of speedster Pione Sisto from the wings.

A Future on Tyneside?

Although we have to be realistic here and realise the Eredivisie is a massive gulf in class to England’s Premier League, he does seem an ideal signing at this time for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle. A side that lacks the domineering presence in the air to give them a Plan B in troubled times.

He gives you an opportunity to complement a direct approach and win headers in the 18 yard box when you really need that goal. He is someone who will be on the line, on the penalty spot ready to poke home, something that has really hampered the Toon’s season so far – missing that finisher.

He has proven at a lower level (Danish and Dutch leagues) to be a capable goalscorer, but in my opinion as I’ve stated, I feel he offers much, much more than that.

Can he be the asset on Tyneside that he proved to be in Copenhagen and Rotterdam?

Only time will tell… but the Geordies and especially owner Mike Ashley will have to get the chequebook dusted off first.
