FRIENDLY: Italy 2-0 Netherlands

ITANED

ITALY 2-0 NETHERLANDS

A commanding performance from Italy rendered the Dutch attack useless, as they didn’t manage a single shot on target on Guus Hiddink’s return. Two goals in the first half allowed Italy to sit back in the second half and control the game writes Ryan O’Grady.

Tonight’s game at the Stadio Comunale San Nicola in Bari was the first for both teams since the World Cup and saw the coming together of two new managers in Antonio Conte for Italy and Guus Hiddink for the Netherlands, although in Hiddink’s case he has managed the Netherlands before from 1994 to 1998. Italy had a poor World Cup despite winning their first game; they lost to Costa Rica and Ururguay meaning they didn’t get out of the group. The Netherlands on the other hand did much better than expected; playing brilliant football and making it it all the way to the semi-finals before winning the 3rd place playoff with a young team that looks promising for the future.

Italy started the game on fire scoring after only 2 minutes when a long ball from Leonardo Bonucci went straight down the middle of the pitch and Bruno Martins Indi, who has started the season so well with FC Porto, fell asleep for a split second which allowed Immobile to race onto the ball and round the oncoming Jasper Cillessen before coolly slotting home. Italy continued this domination, only a few minutes later right-back Matteo Darmian put in a decent cross that seemed destined for Simone Zaza before Martins Indi cleared. Martins Indi was then caught out again in the 8th minute when Zaza was put through before Martins Indi came across the back of him and brought him down resulting in a penalty and a red card for Martins Indi. The penalty was rolled into the corner of the net by Daniele De Rossi to keep up Jasper Cillessen’s record of never saving a penalty in his professional career. Italy completely controlled the first half and repeatedly their three centre-backs were on the halfway line and there were no worries that the Dutch would counter attack as they barely touched the ball for the whole half, their only effort was a half chance for Wesley Sneijder on the edge of the box. Due to the red card winger Jeremain Lens was brought off in the 11th minute for centre-back Joel Veltman to try and secure the defence. In the first half the Dutch ball retention was very poor and in the 19th minute they gave it away again allowing Immobile to break clear before unselfishly laying it off to Zaza who had a shot but it was brilliantly saved by Cillessen. There was a slight lull in the game for the next 10 minutes where the Italians controlled the ball and didn’t let the Dutch anywhere near it. In the 30th minute Zaza received the ball on the edge of the box and with his chest laid it off beautifully for Immobile but the bounce was slightly too high and he put it over. The rest of the half was just filled with Italian half chances including a long-range effort from left-back Mattia De Sciglio that was easily saved by Cillessen.

The second started off with a decent chance for the Netherlands, first a long ball was headed away by Andrea Ranocchia but it only went as far as Daley Blind who immediately headed it into the path of Robin Van Persie in the box but his first time shot was just past the post. Then Sneijder had a long range shot that was going wide and should’ve been easily picked up by Sirigu but he spilt it although no one was following up which meant that he could recover the ball. This was followed by an absolute thunderbolt of a shot from Bonucci from just outside the centre circle that was on target but Cillessen collected it easily enough. It was 10 minutes before either side had another chance due to the game being broken up for multiple substitutions. In the 65th minute Cillessen received the ball under no pressure but dallied on it encouraging Immobile to run towards him from the side, Cillessen tried a drag back which Immobile seemed to be the favourite for but then Cillessen fell over and won a free kick and replays showed there wasn’t a lot of contact between the two players. There was another weird moment in the 71st minute when Veltman fell to the ground off the ball and claimed he was elbowed in the chest but replays showed barely any contact at all and that Veltman was exaggerating. The final decent chance in the game came just before the 80th minute when substitute Mattia Destro passed the ball out to fellow substitute Manuel Pasqual who crossed the ball back into Destro who had made a run into the box but unfortunately the ball was just too high and the young striker could only head it over.

THE MOST SHOCKING TRANSFER OF THE WINDOW!

“Wait, what?” Because I like to be on top of the news, but I’m not that surprised anymore when I read about transfers. Normally there are some rumours and in some cases I’m only waiting for the official news. This goes the same for the recent deadline day – it was exciting as always, but it did not match my feelings when I heard about the biggest transfer this year writes Jos Boesveld.

No, it’s not James Rodríguez to Real Madrid or Ángel Di María joining Louis van Gaal at Manchester United. It’s Kenneth Vermeer and his transfer to Feyenoord.

It has been a long time since I needed a moment to realise what just happened. A shock move, as they like to call it in English. FOX Sports was the first to report the news. I was ready to watch FC Groningen – Ajax on Sunday afternoon when they told about a possible transfer between the biggest rivals in the Eredivisie.

The social media exploded and in a few minutes. The hashtag Vermeer, Ajax and Feyenoord became trending topic in the Netherlands. I did not contributed to that. I just sat there with my mouth open, staring at nothing.

That moment took me back to the 22nd of August 2012. I was a club-watcher for Ajax back then and in the heat of all the transfers, it was a busy month for me. I followed my Twitter feed, refreshed the website of Ajax every five minutes and had a list of players who were linked with the club. Christian Poulsen was not on that list, not even close.

And still, the Danish midfielder came to Ajax. I could not believe that a player with all his experience would choose for an adventure in Amsterdam. He did, and it stunned me. Some transfers just come out of the blue and can surprise everyone, no matter how interested they are in the club. It’s what’s making the transfer market interesting and makes deadline day better than Christmas, New Year’s Eve and whatever holiday combined.

Barclays Premier League

There have been 3 weeks of action so far in the Premier League and it has been a mixed started for Dutch players. Daryl Janmaat has made a decent start to his Newcastle United career, making his debut in a 2-0 loss to Manchester City, a score line that is harsh on Newcastle as they played very well. He then scored against Crystal Palace in only his fourth game for the club. Some of the gloss was taken off his goal due to the fact that they conceded 3 to the early season strugglers. Robin van Persie on the other has made a very poor start to the season with Manchester United. He didn’t feature in their first game due to injury, but did play in the next two, both of which were disappointing draws away to Sunderland and Burnley respectively, and he was substituted in both. Other notable mentions include Ron Vlaar, who has helped his Aston Villa side to their best start in years, and Erik Pieters whose assist helped Stoke City gain a famous win away to Manchester City.

Bundesliga

Only 2 weeks of action in the Bundesliga due to a later start date because of the World Cup. Arjen Robben has carried on where he left off both from last season and this summer’s World Cup; he scored the winner for Bayern in their opening game at home to Wolfsburg. Klaas Jan Huntelaar has also had a notable start to his season, he scored for FC Schalke against Hannover but they were unable to hold on to their lead and lost 2-1. Hertha Berlin’s new boy has fitted in well at his new club, with Beerens already getting an assist for Julian Schieber as he helped his side to 2-2 draw in their first game. Rafael van der Vaart has once again disappointed so far this season for Hamburg, his side faced the two new boys in their first two games but could only manage a 0-0 draw away to FC Köln and suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to relegation favourites SC Paderborn.

Serie A

Serie A kicked off this past weekend and already Dutch players have had an impact. Napoli new boy Jonathan de Guzman scored the winner in the last minute of added time away to Genoa, whilst Lazio new boy Stefan de Vrij was booked in the 62nd minute and only a minute later gave away a penalty although he wasn’t sent off in the 3-1 defeat away to AC Milan. On the other side in that game Nigel de Jong who did what he does best in breaking up the play before distributing the ball to the forward players. Roma beat Fiorentina 2-0 but Strootman hasn’t yet recovered from his injury and their new signing from AC Milan, Urby Emanuelson, remained on the bench.

Best of the Rest

Bruno Martins Indi has already become a crucial part of FC Porto’s backline after €7.7 million move from Feyenoord. He has played in all 5 competitive games for the Portuguese side resulting in 5 wins, 3 in their domestic league and they won both legs of their 3rd round Champions League playoff against Lillehe to progress to the group stages. In Turkey both Dirk Kuyt of Fenerbaçhe and Wesley Sneijder of Galatasaray helped their team to opening day wins. Jeremain Lens hasn’t made a great start to his season in Kyiv with Dynamo; he has only started one game an looked set for a move to QPR of England before that fell through after the bid was rejected.

Eerste Divisie Week 5 Round-up

Header-EersteDivisie

Eight matches were played on Friday evening, we begin with a win for NEC Nijmegen at Helmond Sport writes Kalkeren Kieran.

The away side conceded in the opening minutes through Helmond’s Stanley Elbers but NEC equalised on the 15th minute when the Iran international Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored, it wasn’t long and Jahanbakhsh double NEC’s lead and bagged his second goal of the night. Sjoerd Ards scored twice for the away side, the match finished 4-1 victory for NEC Nijmegen.

FC Den Bosch beat Jong Ajax 2-0, Benjamin van den Broek and Erik Quekel scored for the home side. The defeat for Jong Ajax means the team have lost their last three matches in a row, they face Sparta Rotterdam in round 6.

A 3-0 victory for Fortuna Sittard in round five of the competition, Sittard travelled to Achilles 29 and picked up all three points with Seku Conneh scoring twice and Jordie Briels once, to round up a convincing away win for Sittard, who went into the match after losing their last three matches, Achilles return to the bottom of the table.

Jong PSV hosted FC Eindhoven the away side defeated PSV 3-1, although Maxime Gunst was shown a straight red card on the 20th minute and PSV’s Clint Leemans netted for the home side, FC Eindhoven weren’t hindered by the sending off of their number five, and went on to beat keeper Bertram’s three times as Chiro N’Toko, Snader Heesakkers and Fries Deschilder got their names on the score sheet for the away side.

RKC Waalwijk’s season has continued to disappoint many supporters and their chances of finishing in a Play-off place seems to be in serious doubt, after another defeat during the weekend. This time the blue and yellows were defeated at home by Jong FC Twente 2-1, Jari Oosterwijk and Alvin Daniels put their side into a two goal lead, until Kenny Anderson netted for the home side on the 83rd minute but the Waalwijkers failed to show much defensive discipline, which becoming a habit for the side who fancied their chances of winning the title at the start of the season.

Sparta Rotterdam were trashed at home to FC Volendam, even though Volendam have lost the league’s top scorer Robert Mühren to Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar earlier in the week, Volendam didn’t have trouble finding the back of the net as they went on to beat Sparta 5-0, goals from Ludcinio Marengo, Kevin van Kippersluis(2), Brandley Kuwas and Henk Veerman. The win puts Volendam top of the table with an impressive +15 goal difference.

Telstar defeated Almere City 3-1, Kevin van Essen netted for the home side on the 39th minute, Enzio Bolderwijn of Almere was sent off just before half time, the decision proved to be a massive factor in the match as the ten men of Almere couldn’t handle Telstar’s Ralf Seuntjens who scored twice putting his side into a 3-0 lead until Sander Keller scored for the away side, no doubt keeper Varkevisser will be disappointed that he failed to keep a clean sheet but Telstar’s attention turns to a trip to De Graafschap

FC Emmen faced VVV-Venlo on Friday evening, Niki Maenpaa of VVV was sent off just four minutes into the match putting his side on the back foot from the start, things only got worse for VVV as they conceded on the 6th minute, when Alexander Bannik scored for the visiting side. Although Danny Post equalised for the ten men of Venlo on the 21st minute. FC Emmen netted three more times without any answer from the home side of VVV as Frank Olijve, Cas Peters and Jeffery Altheer scored for their side FC Emmen. VVV were reduced to nine men on the 54th minute as Jerold Promes received a straight red. The match finished 1-4 to FC Emmen, a lack of discipline was the obvious reason the home side faced the heavy defeat.

Nicolas Isimat-Mirin – Monaco’s Dynamic Young Centre-half Joins PSV

Today, Eredivisie league leaders PSV announced the loan signing of French defender Nicolas Isimat-Mirin to strengthened their defensive options and give the young Frenchman the perfect opportunity to get some experience. What is the 22-year-old going to bring to PSV? French Football expert Andrew Davidson explains.

Nicolas Isimat-Mirin (image courtesy of PICS UNITED at PSV.nl)

A Parisian native, born in Meudon in the capitals’ suburbs, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin is a graduate of the famed Clairefontaine academy and has been a rising star in French football for a couple of years now, although that star has been dimmed over the past year or so.

The 22 year old centre-back has struggled to break into the Monaco team since his move there last year; however he attracted much attention in his stand-out year at Valenciennes two seasons ago.  A strong, agile player with a tremendous physique, he was excellent for the club, providing a solid platform at the back which helped take the team to 3rd in Ligue 1 at the halfway stage.

A drop in form for the team as a whole led to an 11th place finish, but Isimat-Mirin’s performances drew high praise.  Rumours of interest from Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool came to nothing, and it was eventually big-spending Monaco who grabbed the youngster’s signature.

At the time Monaco, freshly stacked with billionaire cash and a Ligue 2 title, were on a charm offensive as the other clubs faced a vote over taxation issues to keep them in the league.  It was widely reported that the principality club were snapping up young prospects, for fair prices, to garner favour with their rivals.

Whatever the reasons behind the move, nobody who saw the Haitain descendants’ performances could argue – he belonged at a club where he could realise his potential.  Making just 6 appearances hasn’t dimmed the hope that he can become a bright prospect for club and country in the future.

A loan move to PSV will give Isimat-Mirin (simply ‘Isimat’ on his shirt) exactly what he needs – regular game time in a competitive league, however he has the central pairing of Karim Rekik and Jeffrey Bruma ahead of him.  He can only mature in the challenge of playing abroad for the first time, and will relish the chance.  Meanwhile, PSV fans can look forward to his dynamic play from the back.

Explosive off the mark, he is quick for a big man, and particularly adept at running down and cutting out wide moves and through balls.  He is strong in the air too, and uses his height and strength well.  And the bonus – he’s excellent with his feet, able to take the ball forward and pick a pass.  He has that air of confidence and composure so rarely found in younger centre-backs at the top level at the moment, and this, no doubt, is what has impressed PSV coach Philip Cocu.

The player has been capped at Under-20 and Under-21 level for France and will hope that, as he approaches his 23rd birthday in November, he will begin to hit the form that can catapult him into the full squad.  Compared with Mamadou Sakho during his time in France, Isimat-Mirin would certainly like to join him in the heart of the defence when the European Championships come to France in 2016.

THE EREDIVISIE GOALKEEPER TRANSFER MERRY-GO-ROUND

The Eredivisie has experienced a goalkeeper ‘triangle-transfer’ this deadline day that began with yesterday’s shock transfer of Kenneth Vermeer leaving Ajax to join bitter rivals Feyenoord in a €700k deal after 14 years at the Amsterdam giants writes Will Burns.

Vermeer was set to spend a season on the bench at Ajax and is now set to compete with Erwin Mulder for the number-one shirt in Rotterdam. The 28-year old has signed a four-year deal but it emerged from the British press last night that he could have ended up with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

Van Gaal tried to strike a deal at the end of last week for the Vermeer, however the stopper said he had given his word to Fred Rutten that he was joining Feyenoord.  New United boss Van Gaal is a fan of Vermeer, who would provide cover for current first choice keeper David de Gea at the Old Trafford club. It is understood, United discussed the possibility of a Anders Lindegaard plus cash deal, going to Rotterdam to help make the deal happen but Vermeer insisted on completing the move to De Kuip.

On the move, Vermeer said to De Telegraaf: “’It was a chance I had to grab with both hands. I’m grateful to Ajax for 14 fantastic years but I had to put myself first. I want to be playing. And I can do that at Feyenoord”

This controversial transfer has caused three clubs to adjust their goalkeeping options with PEC Zwolle signing Feyenoord’s reserve keeper Warner Hahn on a season-long loan.  The Jong Oranje international goalkeeper Hahn signed for the Rotterdam club in the summer on a free transfer from promoted side FC Dordrecht but has yet to make his debut ahead of Mulder. Only 22-years-old, Hahn has time on his side and working under Ron Jans at Zwolle gives him great Eredivisie first-team experience.

Why PEC Zwolle needed to buy a keeper was due to the fact that Diederik Boer left the club to replace Vermeer at Ajax, as back-up for Dutch international Jasper Cillessen. The 33-year-old will wear the number ‘33’ shirt and signs on a three-year deal.

Who is Middlesbrough’s new signing – Yanic Wildschut?

Yanic Wildschut has signed for English north-east side Middlesbrough today but could the winger be a positive addition to Boro’s squad? Martijn Hilhorst reveals all.

In the previous season he played twenty-five matches (18 for SC Heerenveen and seven on loan at ADO Den Haag) in which he only scored twice and only had one assist. His career is not impressive thus far: scoring 13 times in 119 matches. The stats prove he is possibly not the player Middlesbrough should be looking for.

Although on the plus side, he can be a threat, but not a big one.  He comes across as dangerous and possesses great speed to outrun any defender, but his ball-control is so poor that when he gets to the ball, his actions are not mind-blowing. However, his physical appearance is astounding (Six-foot one-inch) for someone that pacey.

Wildschut is a typical player you substitute on when struggling defensively and being forced to play on the counter. Do not expect a constant performance from him, Yanic is a player who could be absolutely brilliant or incredibly pitiful.

This would be the second winger from SC Heerenveen this transfer window to make a transfer to the Championship. The first one was Rajiv van la Parra that signed a four-year deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.

Former Ajax defender signs for Southampton

According to reports,Toby Alderweireld (25) had three different Premier League clubs to choose from: Newcastle United, Sunderland and Southampton. He chose latter to play for this season. A remarkable luxury position for a player who just had an awful season.  The Saints will loan him the upcoming season from Atletico Madrid. Will he succeed in the Premier League? Martijn Hilhorst fully aware of the Belgian’s achievements in the Eredivisie, thinks he will.

The Summer Deadline Day of 2013 was one to be sad about for Ajax fans. On this day, Toby Alderweireld left them for Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee of £6 million. A year later he again decides to leave on the last day possible. Should Atletico fans be sad with his departure? Yes! It emerges that he would not play as a centre back with Diego Godin and Miranda ahead of him, but with a possible injury he could easily fill that gap. Southampton have made an absolute top signing with the Belgian international if you look closely to his qualities.

He became the first choice in the heart of defence at Ajax in the season 2008/09 after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to  Arsenal. He and Jan Vertonghen were the central defenders that season and surprising everyone with great performances as the central defensive pairing. Vertonghen was the more footballing centre back while Toby’s job was to man-mark the central striker and they were brilliant. A stat to prove it: 2007/08: 41 goals conceded then in 2008/09: 20 goals conceded. Since that fantastic season no team in the Eredivisie conceded less.

His concentration is world-class. Give him an task and he will fulfil it wonderfully. Alderweireld is surprisingly fast for a big guy (six-foot two-inches) and his technical abilities are off the chain. Passing, composure and pure technique are attributes you would not expect from a defender. That’s not all! He is excellent in the air and his long range shots are frighteningly accurate for a centre-back.

Underneath is a list of remarkable achievements of Toby Alderweireld’s career:

TobyA

A uncountable amount of clubs wanted him after winning three consecutive championships with Ajax. He then chose for Atletico Madrid which seems was a big mistake. Both Miranda and Godin are top-notch centre backs and Alderweireld is not world-class. Not yet, because with his qualities it’s inevitable that he will succeed at Southampton.

EREDIVISIE: FC Twente 0-0 Feyenoord

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 31ST AUGUST

Twente-Feyenoord

FC TWENTE 0 – 0 FEYENOORD

There were no goals in the match between FC Twente and Feyenoord, but there were plenty of chances for both. The quality in the final third was lacking. However there were positives for both, especially in the midfields writes Jack Jackman.

Feyenoord were facing a difficult trip to face FC Twente and it would be a real test of the new side, after the summer of changes that have taken place. It looks like Jordy Clasie is set to stay, which will be a huge boost and he captained the side today. It was the away side that had the better of the early exchanges as Jean-Paul Boëtius had his shot saved by Nick Marsman, while the in-form Mitchell te Vrede had two chances, the first he headed wise, and the second was a shot well saved by the Twente goalkeeper.

The home side started to come into the game as Hakim Ziyech started to threaten, forcing a save from range. The likes of him, Kyle Ebecilio, Luc Castaignos and Youness Mokhtar in the same side is very exciting. Around the half an hour mark, Lex Immers had a great chance to open the scoring for Feyenoord, but his close range shot was excellently saved by Mulder.

Then the big moment of the first half arrived as Boëtius was brought down in the box by Cuco Martina and the referee awarded the away side with a penalty. It was Te Vrede who stepped up to take it, but Marsman guessed the right way and saved a tame penalty. Minutes later, Tonny Vilhena had a decent chance as he found room inside the box, but he failed to find a way past Marsman. The first half ended goalless, but it was an entertaining half and it started to look like the new look Feyenoord team could do things this season in the Eredivisie, with Boëtius looking particularly threatening.

The second half started even, Kamohelo Mokotjo came close with an effort from long range that forced a save from Mulder. This was quickly followed by Ziyech shooting just wide as the home side were turning up the pressure. Feyenoord didn’t create as much as they did in the first half, but te Vrede missed the target with two headers as he continued to be a handful, despite being wasteful in front of goal.

The Feyenoord striker had two chances in quick succession around the 75 minute mark, the first effort went fractions wide, and the second needed to be saved by Marsman after good work to create the chance by Jens Toornstra.

There were a lot of late chances with te Vrede forced a save with his head, the forward had lots of chances today, but couldn’t make one of them count. This was quickly followed by a chance for the home side as Ziyech’s shot from range was saved by Mulder, the midfielder will turn out to be a great signing for Twente, he looked very good today and created lots of problems for Feyenoord.

Elvis Manu produced an excellent bit of skill to put in a cross for Jordy Clasie who headed fractions wide, it looked for a moment like the skipper would score the winner for the away side. Feyenoord nearly nicked at with the last kick of the game as Elvis Manu headed past Marsman, but it was scrambled out by the defenders. The draw was a little unfair on Feyenoord who were the better team. However they lacked composure in the final third, especially te Vrede who had plenty of opportunities to score, but failed to find a way past Marsman, who was excellent all match. There were lots of positives for the side that finished second last season and it looks like they will continue to improve in years to come.

EREDIVISIE: FC Groningen 2-0 Ajax

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 31ST AUGUST

Groningen-Ajax

FC GRONINGEN 2 – 0 AJAX

After losing at home to fellow title challengers PSV last weekend, Ajax were desperate to get back to winning ways in a tricky looking fixture against FC Groningen at the Euroborg. However, the Amsterdammers produced a very flat performance and they looked lost without their star man Daley Blind, who sealed his £14 million move to Manchester United yesterday writes Simon Prue.

FC Groningen began the game well and dominated possession throughout the first half. Antonia provided the outlet for Groningen and his pace was causing all sorts of problems for Boilesen with his pace and trickery.

After a slow start, Ajax grew into the game as Ricardo Van Rhijn’s deflected cross was well saved by Padt. Attempts from El Ghazi and Klassen followed but Ajax could not find the breakthrough. Ajax started to have longer periods of possession and this culminated in Lasse Schone’s delightful 21st minute reverse pass which put Kolbeinn Sigthorsson through on goal but the Icelandic striker’s lack of confidence was evident as he opted to cut the ball back across the box to Davy Klaassen rather than slot the ball home.

FC Groningen showed occasional signs of their counter attacking threat during the first half as Tjaronn Chery had a number of efforts comfortably saved by Dutch international Jasper Cillessen.

Groningen gifted Ajax a golden opportunity just before half time with some woeful defending as Kappelhof lost possession in the penalty area and Ajax nearly capitalised as Klaasen teed up El Ghazi only for the Dutchman to fire miserably over the crossbar.

Erwin van der Looi’s teamtalk clearly inspired his players at half time as they came firing out of the blocks and Eric Botteghin’s 48th minute goal put the hosts 1-0 ahead. Van Der Velden played Chery in down the left hand side of the penalty area and Chery’s cut back found Betteghin who converted from three yards out.

The hosts continued to pile pressure on Ajax as Antonia’s cross found Chery who had the chance to double the lead from eight yards out but he could only poke the ball straight into the hands of Cillessen.

On the hour mark Ajax began to assert themselves once again as some great skill from El Ghazi allowed him to send a wicked cross into Sigthorsson but the out of form striker could only glance his header wide of the goal. El Ghazi then cut the ball inside onto his left foot with a backheel and his shot flew past Padt’s left hand post. If Ajax were going to get a breakthrough it was going to be through the ingenuity of El Ghazi and he came very close to levelling in the 82nd minute. He wriggled his way past Kappelhof wonderfully but he could only blaze over the bar from close range.

FC Groningen then caught Ajax on the counter as substitute Michael de Leeuw wrapped  up the game in the 87 minute. Van Der Velden and Chery linked up just as they did for the first goal and Chery’s dangerous cross was met by the onrushing de Leeuw who nodded home from six yards out.

There was a late surge of pressure from the visitors as Duarte and El Ghazi both saw efforts go close. Davy Klassen had a good opportunity to restore some pride deep in stoppage time but his volley did not trouble Padt and the ball rolled wide of the mark.

It is two defeats in a row now for Ajax who look nothing like a side that are challenging for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Eredivisie title.
