Former Ajax defender signs for Southampton

According to reports,Toby Alderweireld (25) had three different Premier League clubs to choose from: Newcastle United, Sunderland and Southampton. He chose latter to play for this season. A remarkable luxury position for a player who just had an awful season.  The Saints will loan him the upcoming season from Atletico Madrid. Will he succeed in the Premier League? Martijn Hilhorst fully aware of the Belgian’s achievements in the Eredivisie, thinks he will.

The Summer Deadline Day of 2013 was one to be sad about for Ajax fans. On this day, Toby Alderweireld left them for Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee of £6 million. A year later he again decides to leave on the last day possible. Should Atletico fans be sad with his departure? Yes! It emerges that he would not play as a centre back with Diego Godin and Miranda ahead of him, but with a possible injury he could easily fill that gap. Southampton have made an absolute top signing with the Belgian international if you look closely to his qualities.

He became the first choice in the heart of defence at Ajax in the season 2008/09 after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to  Arsenal. He and Jan Vertonghen were the central defenders that season and surprising everyone with great performances as the central defensive pairing. Vertonghen was the more footballing centre back while Toby’s job was to man-mark the central striker and they were brilliant. A stat to prove it: 2007/08: 41 goals conceded then in 2008/09: 20 goals conceded. Since that fantastic season no team in the Eredivisie conceded less.

His concentration is world-class. Give him an task and he will fulfil it wonderfully. Alderweireld is surprisingly fast for a big guy (six-foot two-inches) and his technical abilities are off the chain. Passing, composure and pure technique are attributes you would not expect from a defender. That’s not all! He is excellent in the air and his long range shots are frighteningly accurate for a centre-back.

Underneath is a list of remarkable achievements of Toby Alderweireld’s career:

A uncountable amount of clubs wanted him after winning three consecutive championships with Ajax. He then chose for Atletico Madrid which seems was a big mistake. Both Miranda and Godin are top-notch centre backs and Alderweireld is not world-class. Not yet, because with his qualities it’s inevitable that he will succeed at Southampton.

Liverpool & Spurs target set for Lille loan

Belgian wonderkid Zakaria Bakkali’s future is a hotly contested one at the moment. Talks of an imminent move to Atletico Madrid are being followed up with reports of a loan move to Lille once the move to the Spanish capital is complete.

Lille’s sporting director, Luc Devroe, invited the teenage sensation to watch the game between Ostende and Anderlecht last weeked. Devroe then confirmed that Bakkali is set to move to Lille a soon as his move to Atletico Madrid is finalised.

The teenager, currently a member of PSV Eindhoven’s squad, is believed to be in Madrid to discuss terms with the La Liga champions and Champions League finalists with a moving looking very likely, although personal terms are the only thing left to be agreed upon.

Bakkali is currently the youngest member of the Belgian national team squad and beame the youngest ever player to score a hat-trick in the Eredivisie, when he did so against NEC Nijmegen last season.

The Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur target is currently training with PSV’s second squad when available despite a deal being in place that will take him to the Rojiblancos in Spain.

Atletico agree snip fee for Liverpool target

Last week heavily linked with Liverpool last week, Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Belgian wonderkid, Zakaria Bakkali from PSV Eindhoven for a fee said to be between €2-3 million. While the fee has been agreed between the club, the player and club are yet to agree on a contract.

De Telegraaf reported the news on Wednesday mentioning that their sources were within the Madrid team’s camp. The contract situation that PSV have left themselves in with Bakkali has left them somewhat powerless. His contract expires at the end of next season and the Dutch club are concerned that they will loss the versatile winger for nothing when that times comes.

Due to the fact that negotiations broke down during tense talks over his contract means Bakkali was more than likely out the door next summer, and PSV have decided to jump before they were pushed with the Belgian international of Moroccan descent.

Atletico Madrid continue to reinvest the money they have made of their best players this summer with another signing for the future and have landed the Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal target with little or no aplomb. The La Liga Champions are not taking any prisoners in the transfer market this summer in an attempt to keep up with their rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona domestically and in Europe.

Atletico look to Ajax’s Fischer

Atletico Madrid continue their pursuit of the top talent in the game having lost three of their starting eleven from last season. Attention has now turned to injured Ajax winger Viktor Fischer.

Fischer, who is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, is considered one of the best young talents in Europe and Los Rojiblancos are more than willing to pay the €15 million that may be required to prise the youngster away from the Dutch club.

The injury the young Dane suffered was quite a severe hamstring tear which required surgery and geerally has a recovery time of four months. The operation took place on April 22 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

With Atletico also believed to be in advanced stages of a transfer for Antoine Griezmann, it would mean that the beaten Champions League finalists’ would have upgraded several key positions since their magical campaign last year.

Fischer, who just turned 20 during the summer, has appeared 47 times for Ajax and scored on 13 occasions. He also has Champions League experience, having played eight times over two seasons at this stage of his career.
