CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW: Ajax vs. PSG

Ajax open up their 2014-2015 Champions League campaign against the defending French Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint Germain, this Wednesday night at 20:45 local time writes Alex Pieter.

UCLAjaxPSG

AJAX vs. PSG (19:45 BST)

Both teams are coming off of somewhat disappointing domestic results heading into the match. Ajax struggled for long stretches in an unimpressive 2-1 win over Heracles Almelo, while PSG was held to a draw away at Stade Rennes.  One of the biggest storylines heading into the match Wednesday night is the homecoming of several former Ajax players now playing for PSG, center-back Maxwell, right-back Gregory van der Wiel and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. All three should receive a warm welcome from the home fans, particularly fan-favorite van der Wiel, who came up in the Ajax youth system.

PSG is a heavy favourite to go through in Group F, alongside Catalan giants Barcelona. Barcelona will face APOEL Nicosia in the group’s other match.  Ajax played very well in their three Champion’s League home matches a year ago, as they collected 7 points, tallying wins over Celtic and Barcelona while drawing AC Milan. The win against Barcelona particularly resonated within the Ajax squad. Ajax starting midfielder Davy Klaassen has cited the 2-1 victory at the ArenA last year as a reason not to count Ajax out in Group F. Ajax will need more than confidence to get a result against a top PSG side though.

In order to get a point, or three, Ajax will need to play a near flawless match. Something that has not happened this year, as the backline of Ajax has been exposed in the early part of the season. The biggest weakness for the Ajax defence is the lack of pace. The center-back pairing of Niklas Moisander and Joël Veltman has at times looked shaky. The veteran Moisander and the younger Veltman are still trying to find their rhythm together, as Veltman came to Ajax a bit late after taking an extended holiday following the World Cup. The outside backs have also looked vulnerable at times. Ricardo van Rhijn on the right, and Nicolai Boilesen on the left, have each struggled to defend teams with pacy wingers, something they will see a lot of on Wednesday night.

The defending from the Ajax back four will need to be tidy and wholesome, as the forwards for PSG, the likes Ibrahimović, Edison Cavani, and Ezequiel Lavezzi can capitalize on even the slightest mistake.

Meanwhile, Ajax’s attack has looked decent of late. Arek Milik scored a brace in last weekend’s win over Heracles Almelo, making the question of who starts at striker for Ajax on Wednesday a bit more complicated. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson would be the other option at the striker spot for Frank de Boer. However, Sigthorsson has not scored a home goal for Ajax since last February, yet, he has provided some timely goals and played in some big matches during his time at Ajax. Will de Boer go with the hot hand or stick with his gut?

Ajax will feature Davy Klaassen and Nick Viergever in the midfield alongside Lerin Duarte or Thulani Serero. Viergever is the replacement of Daley Blind in the defensive role while Klaassen is looked upon to be the playmaker of the midfielder. Duarte and Serero, both of which could be looked upon by de Boer to round out the midfield, are very different players. Serero is a small, quick, pacy midfielder who can create problems with his runs, while Duarte offers more defensively and is a much more capable tackler. The other option de Boer could go with, is new signing Niki Zimling, who made his debut for Ajax against Heracles. The experienced midfielder could bring some much needed leadership and toughness into the midfield.

Ajax will have to be efficient with their chances. PSG will not gift Ajax any chances, Ajax will have to create for themselves. El Ghazi and Kishna will have to be their creative selfs on the wing, Schöne will have to make the most of his free kicks, and van Rhijn will have to get forward when possible down the right flank, as he is deadly when given the time and space to play in a cross.

The players from Ajax will not back away from this challenge and will embrace it head on. This is a team that, in recent years, has gone to stadiums like Camp Nou and the San Siro, faced off against players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. While the competition Ajax will face Wednesday night is much better than what they see on a week-to-week basis in Holland, they will be ready. Ajax will fight valiantly and compete, creating some chances and giving the home fans some hope, but in the end PSG has too much class for a young, rebuilding Ajax squad.

Ajax… Where to from here?

It’s fair to say that Ajax’s start to the 2014/15 campaign has been indifferent. A record of won three, lost two is not what the natives of the nation’s capital are used to at this stage of the Eredivisie season. But that is exactly where Frank de Boer’s men find themselves after five games and another interesting transfer window writes Paul Gellard.

The season started well for the title holders. Comfortable wins over Vitesse (4-1) and AZ (3-1) had many feeling that Ajax could well be on an early course for a third straight championship. However, in Eindhoven, PSV were going quietly about their business in a similar fashion and arrived in Amsterdam with the Eredivisie’s form man, Memphis Depay.

Despite PSV’s attacking quality, it was Ajax who controlled the first half and took the lead through an early Anwar El Ghazi goal before capitulating after the break. Philip Cocu’s men soon took the initiative and dispatched the Amsterdammer’s thanks to goals by Depay, Narsingh and Jozefzoon, leaving Ajax fans in a state of shock.

The PSV defeat was then followed by a 2-0 loss against a plucky Groningen side in the north of Holland, meaning that Ajax had suffered back-to-back defeats. In the backdrop of the side’s dip in form was the departure of favourite son, Daley Blind, to Manchester United for a reported £13.8m. And this was offset by the arrival of Danish international, Niki Zimling, on a season-long loan from German club, Mainz 05.

So where to begin to explain for the current situation in Amsterdam? Firstly, the club surely needs to look at filling a problem area in the heart of the defence. Captain and Finnish international, Niklas Moisander, is being charged with holding together a young back four. The remaining first choice starts, going from left to right, are Nicolai Boilesen (22), Joël Veltman (22) and Ricardo van Rhijn (23). Add centre-half, Mike van der Hoorn (21), who started the first two games of the season, and it begins to look very inexperienced. Certainly, there will be those who point towards the international experience of Boilesen with Denmark and Veltman and van Rhijn with Oranje, but it’s clear that it’s asking a lot of Moisander to hold them all together.

The frailties were never more apparent than when bottom club, Heracles, visited the Amsterdam Arena this weekend. What looked like being a fairly routine win over a struggling side, slowly turned into a scrap to hang on for the final whistle. Wout Weghorst, the lanky Heracles striker, caused the Ajax defence all sorts of problems and even managed a late goal after van Rhijn was left to pick him up and was soundly beaten in the air.

Clearly the goalkeeping department is not a major issue for Ajax. Jasper Cillessen had a very productive World Cup with Oranje in Brazil, and he provides a solid last line of defence. His good form has also lead to the sale of the long-serving Kenneth Vermeer to bitter rivals Feyenoord, meaning that the management clearly has a lot of faith in its first choice custodian.

So what of the midfield? Without a doubt, Daley Blind is going to be a big loss to Ajax. The protection he afforded the back four was invaluable and one wonders whether the current defence are missing his presence. Zimling will doubtless be used to fill that gap once he finds his feet at his new club. He made his first appearance as a late substitute against Heracles this past weekend. Until then, it’s highly likely that Nick Viergever will fill the role, having joined from AZ Alkmaar for €2m. Elsewhere, Davy Klaassen has made a productive start to the season and the loyal Thulani Serero’s work rate will keep the midfield ticking over. Although, with the African Cup of Nations taking place in the winter 2015, Serero may well be missing for a long period should South Africa qualify.

Up front is where Frank de Boer will be spoilt for choice. There can be little doubt that the outstanding success so far this season has been right-winger, Anwar El Ghazi. The 19-year-old from Barendrecht has been hugely influential for Ajax and has found the net against PSV and AZ, having made his official debut against PEC Zwolle in the Johan Cruijff Shield at the beginning of August. However, he is not the finished product but will surely only get better. Indeed, Guus Hiddink may well look very closely at El Ghazi, who is also eligible to declare his international loyalty to Morocco.

Alongside the young El Ghazi, Lasse Schöne has also made a very productive start to the season, finding the net three times and providing a creative spark. He continues the long tradition at Ajax of signing creative Danish attacking players. Ricardo Kishna has also been tried wide right but is not likely to be more than a squad player based on current form. It may take something special to usurp the aforementioned El Ghazi.

But in the middle of the forward line is where Ajax now have quality of depth. Having begun the season with the Polish striker, Arkadiusz Milik, leading the attack, he very quickly made way for Kolbeinn Sigþórsson, who has struggled to replicate his form of last season so far. Milik broke his duck in only his second start, this weekend against Heracles. The on-loan Bayer Leverkusen man scored a brace and lead the line superbly, giving de Boer much to ponder going into Wednesday night’s Champions League visit of Paris St. Germain.

Sigþórsson certainly hasn’t failed to put in a shift in the games he’s started this season. His workrate continues unabated but one wonders whether the reported interest in him from Premier League side, Queens Park Rangers, has affected his form at all. With the likes of El Ghazi and Schöne providing the ammunition though, it surely can only be a matter of time before he rediscovers his scoring touch.

Add to the two more seasoned forwards, Richairo Živković, who was signed this summer from Groningen for €1.9m. The 18-year-old managed 11 goals in 37 games in his two seasons at the Euroborg but it remains to be seen whether he’ll see much playing time this season.

So in short, Ajax have work to do to catch up with early pace setters, PSV. The gap between the two sides was there for all to see in the second half at the Amsterdam Arena. Ajax look like a side playing with little confidence at present and it will be a huge test of Frank de Boer’s managerial skills to overcome that. The fact the club’s better players continue to move on to the more moneyed leagues of Europe doesn’t help either. But as long as the club continues to produce the El Ghazi’s of this world, added to reliable Danish finds and young Dutch talent, there is real cause for optimism within the ranks of the Ajax support.

Eredivisie Team Of The Week – Round 5

Header-TeamOfTheWeek

Welcome to week five of our Eredivisie Team of the Week which leads into our Eredivisie ‘Player of the Season’ competition.  All players have performed so well this weekend that Martijn Hilhorst and Will Burns have decided they should be in our team of the week.  Each player in the eleven receives one point and whichever player is declared ‘Player of the Week’, he receives an extra point.

TeamOfTheWeek-5

GOALKEEPER

ERIK CUMMINS (Go Ahead Eagles): Although the Eagles fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Twente, Cummins saved a spot-kick to give his side a lifeline, but his efforts were wasted as the outfielders failed to get a goal for a point.

DEFENDERS

KELVIN LEERDAM (Vitesse Arnhem): A great performance from Leerdam in Vitesse’s 3-1 win over Excelsior, maurading down the wing to cause trouble throughout.

ETIENNE REIJNEN (SC Cambuur): Solid display from the big central defender in which he created an assist in his side’s comfortable 3-0 win over Groningen.

JOOST BROERSE (PEC Zwolle): Made amends from a first-half handball to concede a penalty to hammer home a wonderful second half free-kick to help Zwolle defeat PSV 3-1.

BART VAN HINTUM (PEC Zwolle): Gave Santiago Arias no time at all to create any chances for Luuk de Jong and attacked the left wing well to help out the Zwolle attack.

MIDFIELDERS

BEN REINSTRA (PEC Zwolle): The defender/midfielder scored a sublime strike to clinch all three points against PSV in Saturday’s late game.

ALBERT RUSNAK (SC Cambuur): The on-loan Manchester City man made his second ‘Team of the Week’ with a cracking performance against Groningen capped with a great goal.

JESUS MANUEL CORONA (FC Twente): A bit of a forgotten man in Enschede made everyone remember his name on Saturday with a wonderful goal, an assist and won a penalty in Twente’s win over Go Ahead Eagles.

JESPER DROST (PEC Zwolle): Played a great part in the 3-1 win over PSV with the equalising goal before half-time, although PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet should have done better with the shot.

ATTACKERS

SAMUEL ARMENTAROS (Willem II): The former Feyenoord striker tore his former team apart with a goal and assist in Willem II’s shock 2-1 win at De Kuip.

ABIOLA DAUDA (Vitesse Arnhem): The Nigerian became our Player Of The Week after scoring a 25 minute hat-trick against Excelsior on Sunday afternoon – looking a snip at €500,000 in the summer from Red Star Belgrade.

EREDIVISIE: SC Cambuur 3-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2014

Cambuur-Groningen

SC CAMBUUR 3 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

Cambuur cruise to a 3-0 win with commanding performance that could have been even better had they not been so wasteful in the final third. The result brings Groningen back down to earth after their recent victory against the Dutch Champions, Ajax writes Ryan OGrady.

Fifth played sixth in this meeting of two in-form sides. Cambuur had yet to lose in the Eredivisie sitting on 8 points whilst Groningen were sitting one place higher in 5th having won 3 games, including a famous victory last week against Ajax, and one defeat to Ado Den Haag. The away side were unchanged from their victory against the Dutch Champions with former Ajax player Danny Hoesen starting up front in a 4-3-3 formation. Despite winning 3-2 against Ado Den Haag before the international break, Henk de Jong decided to replace two of his front three with Dejan Meleg and Michiel Hemmen being replaced by Daniel de Ridder and Martijn Barto.

Cambuur were clearly the better team in both halves, they dominated possession with 62% for the whole game and had 4 shots on target compared to Groningen’s one. The home side also had the first decent chance when Bartholomew Ogbeche made a decent run before passing the ball to Albert Rusnák who ran into the box and released a shot straight at the keeper. Groningen best chance for a goal came not long after in the 5th minute when the ball came to Tjaronn Chery and he span and hit the ball first time but it was just wide. Cambuur then came back in the 12th minute when a cross from just outside the box found Ogbeche at the back post but his header was straight at the keeper. Although Cambuur were dominating they were extremely wasteful in the final third and as a result there were no clear cut chances for the rest of the first half.

The second half was much more entertaining for the fans as only 40 seconds in Cambuur had a penalty appeal, Ogbeche received the ball inside the box but his touched bounced up and hit Maikel Kieftenbeld in the arm but the referee deemed it not worthy of a penalty despite protestations from the Cambuur players. Cambuur midfielder Mohamed El Makrini then suffered a nasty looking injury in the 48th minute when he challenged Jarchinio Antonia for the ball, Antonia got there first and attempted to hurdle the oncoming El Makrini but he accidentally landed on El Makrini’s face but the Cambuur midfielder was able to carry on.

Only three minutes later Cambuur scored, it again was a result of a sloppy ball in the final third as the ball was meant for Erik Bakker but it was behind him allowing Rusnák to follow up and score with a lovely finish into the bottom corner to put Cambuur 1-0 up. Rusnák had another chance two minutes later to double his tally from a tight angle but he hit the side netting when he probably should’ve played the ball across the six-yard box. This was followed by a flurry of yellow cards when Rusnák was fouled twice in quick succession causing a commotion which resulted in the booking of four Groningen players in two minutes. One player to be booked was Rasmus Lindgren and he was sent off in the 61st minute after picking up a second yellow for tripping Daniel de Ridder who was en-route to goal.

In the 73rd minute Cambuur doubled their lead after Groningen captain Kieftenbeld lost the ball about 30 yards from goal to Etiënne Reijnen who passed to Ogbeche on the edge of the box and he unleashed a curled effort into the top left corner leaving keeper Sergio Padt with no chance. Groningen manager Erwin van de Looi won’t be happy with Eric Botteghin because when Ogbeche received the ball he kept backing off allowing him the space and time to get his shot away.

Botteghin somewhat made up for his mistake six minutes later when substitute Furdjel Narsingh cut inside the box from the right wing before shooting past the keeper only for Botteghin to clear it. This only prolonged the wait for a third goal by two minutes when El Makrini ran down the right wing before crossing in for an unmarked substitute Sander van de Streek who finished well with a fine header. The substitute then had a chance to double his tally in the 91st minute when he hit the post with a sliding effort following another decent cross from the right hand side.

EREDIVISIE: PEC Zwolle 3-1 PSV

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014

Zwolle-PSV

PEC ZWOLLE 3 – 1 PSV

The underdogs of Zwolle have bitten another big dog and sent them away with their tails between their legs. This time it was the turn of Philip Cocu’s PSV to take home a 3-1 defeat to the hands of Ron Jans’ men after they lost superstar Memphis Depay to an early injury writes Will Burns.

Zwolle started debutant Warner Hahn in goal after the sale of Diederik Boer to Ajax on deadline day but it was his opposite number Jeroen Zoet was called into action first pulling off a save from the lively Jody Lukoki. Hahn’s gloves were warmed up minutes later as Depay fired a trademark free-kick at the young stopper. Depay, scorer of five goals in his last four Eredivisie games, did not last on the pitch much longer as he was struggling with a thigh problem and was replaced by striker Jurgen Locadia.

PSV were stupidly given a penalty kick by Joost Broerse after clearly handballing in the area from a corner kick. Luuk de Jong fired the ball straight down the middle to give PSV the lead and score his second goal of the campaign.

However, just before half-time the home side were given an equaliser by Zoet as Jesper Drost’s drive from the edge of the area was palmed in by the keeper. A shocking error that lifted the IJsseldelta Stadion as Zwolle surged on for a second, Cocu was desperate to hear Danny Makkelie’s half-time whistle.

Just after the hour-mark, tricky winger Ryan Thomas earned a free-kick after half-time substitute Oskar Hiljemark bundled him over around 30 yards out. The home fans clapped in unison as Broerse set-up the free-kick like a pole-vaulter at the Olympic Games. The 34-year-old defender smashed home a beauty to make it 2-1 and to earn redemption off the delighted Zwolle supporters for his earlier handball.

Ben Rienstra capped the night off after surging into the area, overpowering Hiljemark and chipping a wonderful effort over Zoet to cement the points late on.

Zwolle once again show tremendous character to win an important game inside a big atmosphere as PSV will now worry how long Depay will be missing from this team who are ready to mount a serious challenge for the league championship.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 1-2 Willem II

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014

Feyenoord-WillemII

FEYENOORD 1 – 2 WILLEM II

It was an historic night in Rotterdam as Willem II recorded their first away win in the Eredivisie since December 2009. A Samuel Armenteros inspired performance guided the away side to a surprise away victory against struggling Feyenoord. Feyenoord opted to rest their star player Jordy Clasie as they perhaps had one eye on Thursday’s Europa League clash against Sevilla writes Simon Prue.

Feyenoord dominated possession in the early stages of the match but failed to create any clear cut chances. Willem II’s defence looked shaky in the opening 10 minutes, however, it did not matter as a wonderful counter attacking move in the 8th minute saw Frank van der Struijk give Willem II the lead. Armenteros broke away down the left hand side with pace before his deflected cross fell perfectly for van der Struijk to volley home with conviction.

Feyenoord’s best opportunity in the opening 20 minutes of the match came as a result of former Middlebrough man Luke Wilkshire whose free kick was directed straight into the arms of Willem II’s keeper Kostas Lamprou, currently on loan from the Rotterdammers.

Willem II continued to soak up Feyenoord’s pressure and were rewarded for their discipline as they caught Feyenoord on the counter attack once more and doubled their lead in the 23rd minute through star man Samuel Armenteros. Ondaan skillfully passed Kongolo down the right hand side before pulling the ball back superbly into the path of Armenteros who guided the ball expertly into the roof of the net.

The hosts began to get  a grip of themselves and started to threaten Willem II’s increasingly stubborn defence. Dries Wuytens made a crucial recovery tackle to deny Schaken a clear goal scoring opportunity before Te Vrede could only glance his header wide of the post from close range. After Kongolo saw a strong penalty appeal waved away, Feyenoord created their best chance of the game as Lex Immers latched onto a loose ball just inside the 18 yard box but he could only screw his shot horribly wide of Lamprou’s right hand post.

Feyenoord introduced Jens Toornstra and Elvis Manu at the break but there was no change in the pattern of play. Willem II looked to sit back and Feyenoord couldn’t find a way through the opposition’s defence. Kongolo summed up the hosts’ frustration and anxiety as he was cautioned for a reckless challenge from behind on Terell Ondaan.

Just after the hour mark, Luke Wilkshire delivered another good cross towards the near post and Manu should have done better with the opportunity as his header went straight into the hands of Lamprou.

In the 75th minute Luke Wilshire’s teasing crosses were finally rewarded as Colin Kazim Richards leaped above his marker and flicked the ball into the top corner. Kazim Richards almost doubled his tally moments later with an impressive acrobatic scissor kick that flew past the stationary Lamprou but also past the post.

Two great chances for Feyenoord followed. Firstly, Manu went on a mazy run into the penalty area turning van der Struijk inside out but his shot was once again well saved by Lamprou. In the 89th minute tricky winger Ruben Schaken floated in a cross that was cleared into the path of Toornstra whose powerful volley crashed against the post.

Samuel Armenteros had a wonderful chance to get his second goal of the game deep into injury time but his lobbed effort landed on the roof of the net.

TEAMS

FEYENOORD: Vermeer, Wilkshire, Van Beek, Mathijsen (Manu 46), Kongolo, El Ahmadi, Immers, Vilhena, Schaken, Te Vrede (Kazim-Richards 63), Boëtius (Toornstra 46).

EREDIVISIE: AZ Alkmaar 0-1 Heerenveen

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014

AZ-Heerenveen

AZ ALKMAAR 0 – 1 HEERENVEEN

AZ played host to coach Marco van Basten’s former club Heerenveen on Saturday with the Dutchman still unavailable on the touchline due to illness. Alex Pastoor once again barked out the orders as they fell to a 1-0 defeat writes Will Burns.

It was the first time that the home AZ fans inside the AFAS Stadion got to see summer signing Sergio Rochet and he impressed early on. The 21-year-old Uruguayan goalkeeper, arrived from Danubio in May, stopped early efforts from Mark Uth and Jordy Buijs inside a busy first half but seven minutes before the interval, his goal was breached.

Young midfielder Daley Sinkgraven has had a great and impressive start to the 2014/15 campaign and he was on hand to make it 1-0 after poor defending from AZ. Morten Thorsby found some space down the left-wing to find Uth on the edge of the area. Uth lost to the ball to Jeffrey Gouweleeuw who could not direct his clearance out of the path of Sinkgraven who hit a first time shot past Rochet, giving the young keeper no chance.

AZ barely threatened Kristoffer Nordfeldt at the other end but on 55 minutes they should have maybe had a spot kick awarded after Joost van Aken made a clumsy challenge in the area on Derrick Luckassen. Referee Bas Nijhuis waved away any appeals and Heerenveen rode the game out for the win that places them in second place, two points behind PSV.

TEAMS

AZ: Rochet, Luckassen (Elm 73), Gouweleeuw, Wuytens (Haps 54), Poulsen, Ortiz, Hupperts, Gudelj, Haye, Tankovic, Mühren (Johansson 64).

SUBS NOT USED: De Winter, Henriksen, Hoedt, Rosheuvel.

EREDIVISIE: FC Twente 2-1 Go Ahead Eagles

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014

Twente-Eagles

FC TWENTE 2 – 1 GO AHEAD EAGLES

After four consecutive draws, FC Twente grabbed their first win of the season against Go Ahead Eagles but they did not rely on the plethora of talent they brought in at the summer to provide the action it was a forgotten man that stole the show writes Will Burns.

Back in August 2013, I wrote this about the young Mexican Jesús Manuel Corona, as he was a player I had seen many times star in Mexican championships and international youth tournaments. After only making 15 games last season, the winger had not really set the world alight until on Saturday evening against the Eagles of Deventer.

Twente started bright and were ahead in less than four minutes through Luc Castaignos finishing off a wonderful team goal. Hakim Ziyech fed in Castaignos on the edge of the area, who in turn played to Corona, who then threaded the needle for the big striker to finish.

On twenty minutes, the game was tied through Marnix Kolder after he was failed to be picked up and he blasted home from close range after good work from Jules Reimerink.

Within ten minutes, the lead was restored in which Jesus Corona notched what would be the winning goal with an excellent effort. After easily dispatching his marker, Sven Nieuwpoort on the left wing, the Mexican cut inside and played into the area. With only Erik Cummins to beat, the 21-year-old dipped a shot across the goal that deceived the keeper and nestled into the corner.

Hakim Ziyech decided to get in on the act just before the half-time whistle with a great chance that Cummins did well to stop. Ziyech received the ball from Andreas Bjelland’s long ball out of defence and took the ball down well on his chest then flicked it over his and Xandro Schenk’s head. With the crowd roaring in delight, he emerged into the area and fired a half-volley at Cummins and Castaignos nearly grabbed onto the rebound.

Just after the restart, Coruna weaved his magic and again and won his side a tremendous chance of clinching the points early, after Giliano Wijnaldum fouled the Mexican in the box. Castaignos smashed the penalty at the left of the goal and Cummins held strong and palmed away.

Twente pressed and it could have been a lot worse for Fouke Booy’s men were it for not for Cummins’ great display. The last twenty minutes saw Ryo Miyachi make his debut since signing on loan from Arsenal but the game petered out and Twente claimed their first win of the season.

Still undefeated, Twente have the squad to be a major rival for Ajax and PSV in the title chase but will have to improve at the back and in front of goal when playing the top sides.

EREDIVISIE: Ajax 2-1 Heracles

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014

Ajax-Heracles

AJAX 2 – 1 HERACLES

Ajax returned to winning ways rather unconvincingly against manager-less Heracles who suffered their fifth straight defeat, still searching for their first point writes Will Burns.

Amsterdam coach Frank de Boer began the game with young Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik, a loanee from Bayer Leverkusen, up front in place of Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, with possibly thoughts of Wednesday’s Champions League home clash against Ligue 1 money men Paris Saint-Germain. The 20-year old was the scorer of both goals in this win and maybe gave De Boer food for thought for his future selections.

Milik fired out of the blocks and grabbed his first goal within a minute. Danish midfielder Lasse Schöne threaded a poor ball through which Milik had to work on and overpower Heracles defender Bart Schenkeveld. The Pole did wonderfully to knock the big defender off the challenge and smash a low drive across Dennis Telgenkamp’s goal to send the ArenA into raptures.

The defending champions had plenty of chances to kill the game off but depended on Milik to find the second goal on the stroke of half-time. After some great work from young winger Anwar El-Ghazi skipping through Heracles’ challenges, Milik cut inside to fire home from the edge of the area.

Thomas Bruns saw his close range effort saved from Jasper Cillessen just after the restart which fired a warning to Ajax that Heracles may be down but certainly not out. The visitors gained the majority of the possession but failed to bother the Dutch international goalkeeper until four minutes remaining.

Substitute Bas Sibum easily sent a cross over without a decent challenge from Nicolas Boilesen and Wout Weghorst nodded an excellent header into Cillessen’s goal. The relegation contenders then gave Ajax a torrid time as the time wore on, however Ajax held on for the win.

International break-ing my heart

Total Dutch Football columnist Jos Boesveld discusses why he misses the Eredivisie during the international break…

I really, really, really dislike the international break. There, I’ve said it. The football weekend was boring with no club football to watch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Although some great countries faced each other, it cannot match one single round in the Eredivisie.

In our own Dutch competition, there is something special about the matches. It doesn’t matter that clubs like FC Dordrecht or Willem II are small and don’t have players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. When two teams meet in the Eredivisie, there’s always something going to happen.

Take the match Excelsior vs. Heracles Almelo for example. Two small clubs who only can hope and dream to stay another year in the top flight. Both teams know that they need to win these sort of matches, because against bigger clubs it’s nearly impossible to walk away with the three points. This guarantees an exciting match between two teams who give it their all.

It’s not Arsenal vs. Manchester City or Real Madrid vs. Atlético, but it’s pure football. The battle for possession, the fight for goals and sometimes the clumsiness that is bound to happen in the Eredivisie. Excelsior cannot counter like Real Madrid and Manchester City can easily buy the full line-up of Heracles about thirty times. It doesn’t matter, as long as the game in the Netherlands is just as unpredictable as the FIFA and their decisions about technology.

Anyone ever heard of Jeff Stans? If you’re not interested in the Dutch competition you’ll probably never heard of him. Five years ago still an amateur, but now he has played over eighty games in the Eredivisie, Jupiler League, KNVB Beker and Eredivisie play-offs. In the match Excelsior – Heracles Almelo the player from the homeside scored a more than brilliant goal, which would instantly become internet famous if it would happen in any match in the Premier League, Primera Divisíon or Bundesliga.

It happened in our own Eredivisie and I can only thank the players in this competition. They make my weekend awesome, unlike the national teams, playing friendly’s or even qualifications. So don’t give me a break. Not even an international one..

EURO 2016 QUALIFIER: Czech Rep 2-1 Netherlands

CZENED

CZECH REPUBLIC 2-1 NETHERLANDS

Dire Defending from the Dutch costs them as Guus Hiddink’s first game ends in defeat and the Dutch lose a qualification game for the first time in nearly three years reports Ryan O’Grady.

The Road to France starts here and even though the Dutch are favourites to progress from their qualification group it won’t be straightforward. In their group they face tough games against teams like Turkey, Iceland and tonight’s opponents the Czech Republic. Turkey will be a tough opponent with players such as Arda Turan, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and even Nuri Şahin if he can recover from his injuries. Iceland will also be tough opponents as they only just missed out on this year’s World Cup after losing their play-off to Croatia and have dangerous players like Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alfred Finnbogason. The rest of the group is made up by Latvia and Kazakhstan where the Dutch should definitely pick up maximum points.

Tonight’s opponents are no walkovers either having qualified for the last Euros in 2012 but they are in something of a rebuild and haven’t recorded a victory in their last 4 games under their new coach Pavel Vrba. The Dutch are coming off the back of a very positive World Cup where they surpassed their own expectations but this positivity has been somewhat dampened by their recent loss to Italy where they were completely outclassed and didn’t record a single shot on target. That game was Hiddink’s first in his second spell as national team manager and saw him use a back four. Today’s game however saw the Dutch start with three centre-backs and two wingbacks, a system used under previous manager Louis van Gaal.

The opening 10 minutes of this game saw the Czech showing the Dutch players respect as they sat back not wanting to get caught out and as a result there were no chances in the opening period. However after the first 10 minutes the Czech Republic came out of their shell and were more forthcoming in attack. First Krejci had a decent cross into the box cleared well by Nigel de Jong for a corner. The Czechs took it short and worked it well and eventually the ball fell to Darida inside the box and his shot was blocked for a corner. Memphis Depay was by far the Netherlands’ best player in the first half and in the 14th minute he wiggled his way past a couple of defenders before giving the ball out to Daryl Janmaat on the right wing before the Newcastle defender crossed it for Robin van Persie and his flicked shot was deflected behind for a corner that came to nothing. Czech striker David Lafata appeared to suffer a serious head injury when he was caught on the jaw by an accidental knee from Stefan de Vrij. He went on to recover and was heavily involved in the next passage of play that resulted in a goal for the Czech Republic. Lafata received the ball inside the box with his back to goal and had Bruno Martins Indi behind him. His first touch was brilliant and with his second touch he laid the ball off to Bořek Dočkal who struck it beautifully first time and it hit the inside of the post before just sneaking inside the other post in the 21st minute. The Dutch had a really good chance to reply only 4 minutes later when Daley Blind supplied a sublime cross into the box that Georginio Wijnaldum ran onto but the bounce was a bit high and the PSV midfielder could only put it over with an outstretched leg. The Czech Republic had clearly worked on set-pieces on the training ground as nearly every single one caught out the Dutch defence, in the 30th minute they had a free kick that was played across the edge of the box and Darida allowed the ball to run through his legs before Limberský followed up with a shot that looked good but was blocked inside the box. The Dutch then had another guilt-edged chance to equalise only a minute later as Janmaat put in a low cross that van Persie looked like he was going to hit but then for some reason he left and it clearly surprised Petr Čech but he managed to stick a leg out and clear it although it wasn’t heading in. Hiddink clearly wasn’t happy with the way things were panning out and in the 38th minute he brought off Joel Veltman for Luciano Narsingh to revert back to a traditional 4-3-3 employed in the previous game against Italy.  Depay then had a brilliant shot from distance that was destined for the corner of the net before Čech pushed it over. Substitute Narsingh also had a late chance in the half as he received the ball in the 6-yard box but it was at an awkward height and he couldn’t get any power on his shot and it was easily cleared.

The Dutch came out in the second half much the better side and in the 52nd minute Wesley Sneijder put through Depay with a wonderful ball but centre back Provcházka recovered well and won a goal kick for his side. Only 2 minutes later the Dutch equalised, an initial Dutch corner was half dealt with by the defence but Blind reintroduced the ball and De Vrij rose above the defence and sent a header across goal into the corner of the net. The Czechs then had another decent free kick, this the ball landed in the box and it looked like Provcházka was going to hit before Martins Indi recovered and put him off. For the next 10 minutes or so the only notable occurrences were substitutions from the Czech Republic. The Dutch had a great chance in the 78th minute to go ahead when Narsingh put in a lofted ball that Depay got his head to but it was easily saved by Čech because rather than putting any power behind his header, Depay appeared to just let the ball bounce off his head. This miss was almost punished from another set-piece from the Czech Republic, this time a short corner was put in by Darida and Kaderabek headed it on before Provcházka put it over from about 1 yard out with his header. This miss didn’t cost his side dearly however because at the beginning of stoppage time Limberský put in a cross that Janmaat attempted to head back to Cillessen but instead hit his own post before coming back across the goal behind the diving Cillessen and allowed substitute Pilař to snatch victory right at the death.

TEAMS

Czech Republic: Čech, Provcházka, Kadlec, Limberský, Rosický, Vácha (Kolář 81’), Dočkal (Pilař 66’), Krejci, Darida, Kaderabek, Lafata (Vydra 72’)

Moving from the Eredivisie – ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go?’

Rogier Waalder investigates the players that have left the Eredivisie for clubs around Europe and asks… has is been successful for them?

With the excellent performances of a youthful Dutch team at the recent World Cup, much has been made of the success of the large Eredivisie based contingent of the side.  For a league that is widely regarded as an excellent developer of young talent, it was no surprise to see the likes of Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, Bruno Martens Indi, Daryl Janmaat, Stefan de Vrij and Jesper Cillesen doing so well.  At the time of the World Cup 2014 these players were all playing for Eredivisie Clubs specifically Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV.  Since the conclusion of festivities in Brazil and the Third Place Playoff match, Martens Indi (Porto), Janmaat (Newcastle), Blind (Man Utd) and de Vrij (Lazio) have all left the Eredivisie for pastures anew.

Much speculation was made towards the end of the recent transfer window as to the future of Memphis Depay, arguably the player with the rawest talent of any of the Eredivisie stars at the World Cup.  In the end he took the advice of some Dutch legends, such as Guus Hiddink and Ruud Gullit, to commit himself to the Eredivisie and PSV until 2017. Did he make the right decision or would he have been better off following the likes of Daley Blind onto a bigger club, on the back of a World Cup high?

The Eredivisie has undoubtedly produced many top class Dutch talents over the past years with the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Jaap Stam, Edwin van der Saar, Wesley Sneijder and Dennis Bergkamp going onto bigger and better things.  The main point to note with these players is that they each played over 120 Eredivisie matches (except van Persie &  Robben).  So is there a magical number of Eredivisie matches that a young talent should play that will guarantee success at a higher level?  Let’s take a look at some recent young stars who’ve left the Eredivisie for the bright lights of a bigger league and see whether this theory makes a player a Hit or Miss beyond the Eredivisie.

Royston Drenthe: After starring at the 2007 UEFA U/21 Championships, where he was player of the tournament, Drenthe moved to Real Madrid having played just 29 Eredivisie matches.  Since his ill-fated Madrid experience Drenthe has played at Hercules, Everton, Alania and Reading.  MISS

Maceo Rigters: Another member of the 2007 U/21 team, Rigters played 80 Eredivisie games before moving onto Premier League outfit Blackburn Rovers, whom he played for twice.  He spent most of his time out on loan to lower division clubs such as Norwich, Barnsley and Willem II before the glittering lights of the Gold Coast attracted him to an ill-fated stint in the A-League, and he hasn’t been seen since.  MISS

Daniel de Ridder: Yet another star of the 2007 U/21 team, de Ridder played just 30 times for Ajax before moving to La Liga outfit Celta Vigo.  In the 9 years since he’s managed barely 100 games in total and now finds himself back in Holland with Cambuur, after no less than 7 clubs since leaving. MISS

Luc Castaignos: Castaignos played 42 times for Feyenoord before moving onto Inter Milan in 2011.  After only 8 appearances for Inter he returned to the Eredivisie just a year later and currently plies his trade with FC Twente.  Perhaps didn’t give his time in Italy enough of a chance. JURY’S OUT

Luuk de Jong: After a reasonably successful spell with FC Twente, de Jong moved to Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 after 76 Eredivisie appearances.  He had 2 fairly unspectacular seasons in Germany (and also a short stint at Newcastle Utd) before returning to Eredivisie with PSV this season. MISS

Ibrahim Afellay: The former wonderkid of Dutch football Afellay actually did have a fairly substantial Eredivisie career (159 games at PSV) before moving onto Barcelona, where he hasn’t done much since.  Much of his woes have been down to injury though. MISS

Ricky van Wolfswinkel: van Wolfswinkel played just under 100 games for Vitesse and Utrecht in the Eredivisie and was quite a prolific scorer.  He moved to Sporting Lisbon in 2011 and was actually quite successful there scoring 1 goal for every 2 games he played in Portugal before his ill-fated moved to Norwich last season.  JURY’S OUT

Bas Dost: Dost had a very prolific 66 matches in the Eredivisie with Heerenveen which yielded him 45 goals. Wolfsburg clearly didn’t heed the example of Afonso Alves and signed the striker in 2012, where he has only played a further 40 games for a return of just 12 goals.  MISS

Tim Krul: An exception to the norm here as Krul didn’t play any Eredivisie matches before moving onto Newcastle where he has since been a big HIT.

So it would appear as though on the weight of evidence that young Dutch players, moving on from the Eredivisie, are better served staying in the Netherlands for a bit longer before moving onto a bigger league.  It seems as though Dutch players really do like the comforts of home and the coaching styles and techniques of the Eredivisie and find it hard to replicate their Eredivisie form at foreign clubs if they haven’t served a long apprenticeship at home first.  There are always unique talents that are exceptions to this rule ie van Persie & Robben, but for the most part young Dutch players should follow the example of the van Nistelrooy’s and Bergkamp’s of this world and get plenty of games under their belt in the Eredivisie before making the move to bigger clubs abroad.  Memphis Depay, seemingly, has heeded this advice and let’s hope for his future that he turns into the next Arjen Robben and not the next Royston Drenthe.
