EREDIVISIE: Ajax 0-0 PEC Zwolle

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

AjaxZwolle

AJAX 0 – 0 PEC ZWOLLE

The first half was goalless, but it was intriguing contest as in form PEC Zwolle went to Ajax to try and get something from the game. An early chance fell the way of Czech forward Tomas Necid, but his shot was saved by Jasper Cillessen. Niklas Moisander came close to scoring as he fired a shot from outside the penalty area just wide, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson was proving to be a real threat as he had several chances in the opening stages to open the scoring writes Jack Jakeman.
Although Ajax were dominant in possession as you would expect, Zwolle looked very dangerous on the break with Tomas Necid looking like he had a goal in him as he forced another good save out of Cillessen as the half progressed, while the pace of Ryan Thomas and Jody Lukoki looked like it could prove Ajax problems.
Joel Veltman was playing very well at the centre of the Ajax defence, both at the back and he looked assured in possession, often making the correct decisions to set up attacks for the home side. Moisander, Sigthorsson and Thulani Serero all had the ball in promising situations at the back end of the half, but they all wasted the positions with a poor final product. Ajax needed to be more clinical, as Zwolle looked like they would get a goal as the game wore on. In the closing stages of the half, Joel Veltman headed just over from a Lasse Schone set piece.
The second half was more of the same, with both sides having chances, but lacking the quality in front of goal. Lasse Schone had a chance from range, which was well stopped by Hahn. Ajax had the better chances, and it was Sigthorsson who came closest after hitting the bar from close range, a chance he normally puts in the net.
For the away side, Tomas Necid continued to be a huge threat as he held the ball up well and constantly troubled the Ajax back line. His drive from distance forced the Dutch national keeper Cillessen into another stop. He was called into action only moments later as Bram van Polen was denied by the World Cup star. Ricardo Krishna had a late chance but blazed over.
The game fizzled out into a draw as neither side created many chances in the final stages, the result was better for the away side, who remain level with the Eredivisie champions. Today’s results have seen PSV open a two point lead, but the start of the season has been intriguing at the summit.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 4-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2014

FeyenoordGroningen

FEYENOORD 4 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

Feyenoord score four as they dominate 10-man Groningen. The sending off of Johan Kappelhof at 1-0 left Groningen with an uphill task and they were put to the sword by a very good Feyenoord forward line writes Ryan O’Grady.

Feyenoord and Groningen were both coming into this game off the back of two consecutive wins with Feyenoord perhaps showing that they are starting to recover from a difficult start to season in which they were knocked out of Champions’ League qualifying and the KNVB Beker. In their last two games they beat Go Ahead Eagles 4-0 in the Eredivisie, after losing to them in the cup, and Elvis Manu scored a late goal to secure victory against Standard Liege in the Europa League. Groningen won their cup game 4-1 against Topklasse (3rd Division) side Barendrecht and last weekend beat Willem II 1-0 at home in the league.

It was relatively quiet opening twenty minutes to start the game, the only events of note were a Jens Toornstra free-kick that was cleared by Maikel Kieftenbeld and a booking for Kappelhof, something that would be even more significant later. It all began in earnest in the 20th minute when Colin Kazim-Richards retrieved the ball inside the box before spinning and managing to get a shot away that was well saved by Sergio Padt. The rebound fell to Jordy Clasie and with Padt still on the floor he pretty much had an open goal to aim at but skied it badly from about 10 yards out. Feyenoord then got themselves ahead only 3 minutes later when Kazim-Richards played a lovely one-two on the edge of the box with Lex Immers before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the net. They had a chance to double their lead in the 30th minute when Kappelhof got his clearance badly wrong and the ball went out for a corner which Terence Kongolo subsequently headed just wide.

Elvis Manu then joined in the action in the 36th minute when he cut in from the left hand side and was in an extremely dangerous position but put his effort well over Padt’s bar. This was followed by a Feyenoord penalty claim when Toornstra appeared to be tripped by Danny Hoesen just inside the box but the referee Tom van Sichem wasn’t having it and gave the goal kick after the ball had rolled out of play.

The second half started with a kerfuffle when a corner from Groningen came in and there was a scramble in the box before Vermeer managed to grab it but as he was grabbing it Eric Botteghin swung for the ball and accidentally caught Vermeer in the face. He immediately tried to apologise but the Feyenoord players weren’t and a minor ruckus was started. The referee ended up booking Botteghin. As mentioned earlier Kappelhof was booked in the first half and in the 56th minute he picked up his second yellow and was sent off leaving coach Erwin van de Looi with 10 men and made it even tougher for his side to try and get back into the game. Midfielder Nick van der Velden was brought off for defender Roland Baas as a result. Groningen paid for the sending off almost immediately as in the 57th minute Lex Immers scored a wonderful header. Karim El Ahmadi ran down the right before delivering a ball into the centre of the box that Immers ran onto from the left hand side and headed it back the way it came leaving Padt with no chance. The Dutch attacking midfielder then had another good headed chance in the 65th minute when another sublime cross, this time from Australian Luke Wilkshire, found its way to Immers who this time could only head it past the post.

Manu then had a one-on-one with the keeper and he tried to put it through the keeper’s legs but the keeper was able to close his legs just in time and deflect it away from goal. Substitute Jean-Paul Boëtius made it 3-0 soon after in the 83rd minute when yet another brilliant cross from Wilkshire found another substitute in Mitchell te Vrede who his header was brilliantly saved by Padt but the ball flew straight up and Boëtius came in and headed home from close range. Te Vrede did manage to get himself on the scoresheet 5 minutes when a lovely chipped cross from Lex Immers found the bug Dutchmen unmarked in the 6 yard box and this time he didn’t Padt a chance.

EREDIVISIE: PSV 3-0 Excelsior

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

PSVExcelsior

PSV 3-0 EXCELSIOR

Despite their exploits in Europe, PSV outclassed Excelsior on Sunday, with pace and quality in the final third being the decisive factor. The home side are really making a claim for the title this season, after years of domination by Ajax writes Jake Jackman.

It was going to be difficult for PSV after playing in Russia just days ago, and Excelsior started well to increase the pressure, making the most of the tiredness of the home players. Although Jurgen Locadia had an early chance, which was saved well by Coutinho, the pressure was all Excelsior for the next 15 minutes. Jordan Botaka had a couple of chances and looked very dangerous with his pace, but he failed to produce quality when it came to the final product.

PSV started to show their quality, with Florian Jozefzoon and Luciano Narsingh proving numerous problems for the Excelsior defence, who were playing a high line, which was going to get exploited eventually. The home side scored a disallowed goal, through Jozefzoon as the pressure increased. Both Jozefzoon and Georginio Wijnaldum forced good saves out of the Excelsior keeper Coutinho. The former then had another chance from a header, but put it straight at Coutinho.

The home side managed to get Jozefzoon and Narsingh through on the wings on numerous occasions, but Excelsior were defending well in last ditch situations, which allowed them to keep the scores level. The two PSV wingers were looking very good as the first half progressed, but it was a bizarre way that led to PSV opening the scoring as Adam Maher put the ball back into the danger area, and confusion between the Excelsior defence and Coutinho led to the ball creeping in at the far post. The limited celebrations show that a shot wasn’t Maher’s intentions, but PSV won’t complain.

The home side nearly doubled their lead through right back Arias, as his deflected shot forced a great save out of Coutinho, who had to tip it over the bar. PSV did score before the break as their pace paid dividends as Locadia timed his run well to find space behind the Excelsior defence, before his shot goalwards was converted by Narsingh.

The second half was all PSV to start with as Wijnaldum and Jozefzoon both had shots saved early on, before an excellent finish from Jurgen Locadia saw the home side go three in front. It was a classic forward’s goal, as he finished well from close range. The pressure continued to build and the resistance showed early from Excelsior had all but disappeared.

Then something happened that could have allowed Excelsior back into the match as Jeffrey Bruma got a straight red card for a foul just outside the penalty box, although there was a lot of disagreement from PSV, which also saw Phillip Cocu get sent to the stands. Heracles then had a lot of chances to close the deficit as Sander Fischer, Adil Auassar, Rick Kruys and Daryl van Mieghem all had chances, but none of them could find the back of the net.

The game was fading out as the result was secured, but there were still chances for both sides. Andres Guardado missed the target worth a header after finding space in the box, while Luigi Bruins forced a good save from Jeroen Zoet. Substitute Rai Vloet had a late chance, but saw his shot fly wide.

It was a good contest for the first twenty minutes, as Excelsior looked sharp, but as soon as PSV opened the scoring, the quality shone through and they went on to dominate the game. The attacking trio of Locadia, Jozefzoon and Narsingh were all impressive and it shows the depth of the squad available to Cocu. The sending off of Bruma had little effect and PSV’s good start continues.

Header-EersteDivisie

Round 8 of the Dutch Eerste Divisie report by Kalkeren Kieran.

We begin our week nine report with NEC Nijmegen travelling to Almere City, NEC were hoping they could finish the 1st period on the top of the table but nothing was guaranteed and Rood Broods side went out to play for the win in which they were successful in doing so. NEC led at half-time thanks to a wonderful goal by Alireza Jahanbakhsh, the side doubled their lead through Sjoerd Ars on the 47th minute. Although the match was stopped for a short period due to crowd trouble, thankfully the match resumed after the break. Almere’s Ricardo Kip scored late into the second half but NEC held on to the win, finishing 1-2.

FC Volendam will go into the International break in second place, after a 0-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard on Friday evening, Fortuna were reduced to 10 men as Fatih Turan was shown a straight red on the 66th minute. Kevin Brands gave Volendam the lead several minutes later and it proved to be enough to take all three points.

Roda JC dominated possession against Jong PSV but the match finished all square at 1-1, Henk Dijkhuizen put Roda into the lead on the 17th minute but Jong PSV’s Boris Cmiljanic equalised on the 80th minute to clinch an important point in Kerkrade.

Joey Sleegers and Anthony van den Hurk both scored for FC Eindhoven as they defeated the yellow and blue of RKC Waalwijk, FC Eindhoven go into the international break on red hot form as they sit 4th in the table, RKC will no doubt be glad of the break as they slip to the foot of the table with only four points after nine matches.

Telstar got the better of Sparta Rotterdam on Friday evening in an exciting match which included 7 goals. Paul Gladon gave his Sparta side the lead with only 2 minutes played, but Johan Kulhan

Equalised for the home side several minutes later, although Sparta’s lead was restored thanks to Johan Voskamp’s goal on the 29th minute. Telstar weren’t going to go down without a fight and it was made clear as they equalised for the second time in the match through Jonathan Kindermans and It wasn’t long until Telstar found themselves leading for the first time as Anmar Almubaraki scored for the home side. Johan Voskamp got his second and Sparta’s third of the night making it 3-3, Telstar managed the final say thanks to Anmar Almubaraki’s goal on the 71st minute giving Telstar a 4-3 victory over Sparta in a closely fought match, which could have gone either way.

VVV-Venlo defeated Helmond Sport, VVV lead 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Melvin Platje and Jeffrey Altheer. Helmond scored on the 67th minute through Jack Tuyp but it wasn’t enough and VVV won 2-1, the win puts the Venlo side into 6th place unlike their opponents Helmond, who enter the international break in 18th.

FC Den Bosch entertained De Graafschaap on Friday evening, the experienced Anthony Lurling gave Den Bosch the lead on the 11th minute but De Graafschaap’s Vincent Vermeij equalised giving the travelling supporters something to cheer about. Jerry van Ewijk put De Graafschaap into the lead on the 71st minute and the match finished 1-2 to De Graafschaap.

Roland Bergkamp netted for FC Emmen to give them the lead against Achilles 29, which was then doubled by Cas Peters who gave FC Emmen a two goal advantage. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the away side, they were reduced to 10 men when Elson Rosario Almeida was shown a straight a red on the 78th minute. Freek Thoone managed to pull one back for Achilles but time was against the home side and FC Emmen took three valuable points on the road in a 1-2 victory for the away side.

Richairo Zivkovic and Elton Acolatse netted two goals each and Queensy Menig also got his name on the score sheet as Jong Ajax defeated Jong FC Twente 5-1, the home side will be disappointed they didn’t keep a clean sheet as Jari Oosterwijk scored for Jong FC Twente. It was a relatively comfortable win for Jong Ajax who will face Helmond Sport when the sides return after the International break.

FC Oss left it late against MVV Maastricht but the away side defeated MVV 0-2, Kevin van Veen netted for Oss on the 84th minute and Fatih Kamaci completed the win as he went on to doubled his sides lead late into added time.

EREDIVISIE PREVIEW: Ajax vs. PEC Zwolle

Header-EredivisiePreview

Ajax-Zwolle

There’s no getting away from this fixture, some are relishing it some are dreading it. Ajax has lost two trophies in two seasons to Zwolle surely revenge is in the air come Sunday right? Maybe see PSV, Ajax and Zwolle all sit level on 15 points top of the league so this game will be closer than many fans will predict writes Nathan Hyland.

Ajax almost at full strength Viktor Fischer is still out but Lasse Schöne expected to return after missing the last two league games one of the games was the 5-2 drubbing of NAC Breda where Kolbeinn Sigthorsson netted three and could of had four but decided to give the fan in row Z his hat-trick ball as he missed a penalty in dramatic fashion. Klaassen took it upon himself to be the creative spark with three assists.

Ricardo van Rhijn scored another to make that two in two for him and Joël Veltman bagging one. So strong going forward but the back is a cause for concern this week. After conceding two to an average NAC side they will really have to tighten the back up this Sunday. Veltman can sometimes be reckless flying into challenges and Nicolai Boilesen who tends to cancel out offside traps, concentration must be at 100% against a decent looking PEC Zwolle side.

Anwar El Ghazi I expect will be sacrificed for Lucas Andersen who is doing a great job so far even scoring the goal in the 1-1 draw with APOEL on Tuesday. I predict a front three partnership of Andersen/Sigthorsson/Schone looking to pull the Zwolle defence left and right and no doubt using Sigthorsson aerial prowess.

Fun fact: Ajax has won the last four home matches against Zwolle in the league.

Zwolle coach Ron Jans could have a headache when it’s time to select the team, up to five players missing come Sunday. Kevin Begois, Leroy Labylle, Thanasis Karagounis and former Ajax kid Jody Lukoki are all absent from this match.

Last game PEC won 4-2 against bottom side Heracles and prior to the cup game against FC Oss lost 1-0 to AZ Alkmaar. Despite that defeat, Zwolle still finds themselves tied for top spot so there is all to play for. Zwolle will head into this game Sunday with playmaker Jesper Drost and Czech international Tomas Necid in fine form which doesn’t bode well for a leaky Ajax defence.  Neither Ajax nor Zwolle will want to lose any ground to PSV when this game week is over. PEC will probably line up 4-2-3-1 with Necid being supported by Thomas/Drost/Saymak for quick counter attacking football.

PREDICTION

Ok so I’m an Ajax fan through and through and when I see the team name PEC Zwolle it descends red mist over my eyes as much as Utrecht and Feyenoord do. Credit to their manager Ron Jans for getting them this far but surly this is the demolition all Ajax fans have been waiting for. I’m going for a 4-1 win to Ajax who on Sunday will be like a pack of hungry sharks. Once they get the taste of blood expect them to savage Zwolle. Think Mary Poppins flying over a mortar range…….

This could get very ugly.

Eerste Divisie Week 8 Round-up

Header-EersteDivisie

We begin week 8 of the Eerste divisie with a 2-2 draw between FC Emmen and  Jong Ajax on Friday evening, Jong Ajax led by two goals at half time thanks to Kenny Tete and Robert Murie but the home side came out the stronger after the break and pulled one back on the 49th minute through Luis Pedro Da Silva Ferreira. Alexander Bannink then scored the equaliser for the Emmen on the 83rd minute, the match finished with a share of the spoils 2-2.
Anthony van den Hurk’s goal for FC Eindhoven was the difference between Eindhoven and VVV-Venlo in a match that either teams could have won, but FC Eindhoven won 1-0.
Although Stanley Elbers put his Helmond Sport side in the lead on the 44th minute against the Limburg side Roda JC, his side couldn’t hold on to the lead, they conceded on the 54th minute when Wiljan Pluim netted for the away side, Roda JC then went on to take the lead and all three points thanks to Rigino Cicilia.
FC Oss led by two goals after 40 minute against Telstar on Saturday evening as Jochem Jansen and Jorzolino Falkenstein netted for the home side, the visiting side pulled a goal back on the 47th minute through Toine Van Huizen but FC Oss held onto the lead and importantly took all three points.
Johan Voskamp,Denis Mahmudov and Jeremy de Nooijer scored for Sparta Rotterdam against Almere City, the three goals from Sparta went unanswered by Almere as they failed to create any clear cut opportunities through out the match, it finished 3-0 to the Rotterdam side.
Achilles 29 were one of only three teams to get a win on their travels this weekend, Achilles trashed the blue and yellow of RKC Waalwijk 0-4, goals coming from Freek Thoone,Thijs Hendriks and Kürsad Sürmeli who netted twice for the away side.
Although De Graafschap dominated possession on Sunday against table toppers NEC Nijmegen they still ended up on the wrong side of the result. NEC defeated De Graafschap 0-2, Anthony Limbombe and Kristjan Emilsson provided the goals for the away side in their two goal victory.
FC Volendam defeated MVV Maastricht 3-0, Henk Veerman opened the scoring for Volendam on the 22nd minute, Kevin Brands then double their lead just before halftime. The match was then put out of reach of MVV when Henk Veerman scored his second of the night and his sides third, Volendam ran out comfortable winners.
Jong PSV knocked five passed FC Den Bosch on Monday night, Clint Leemans,Elvio van Overbeek,Mohamed Rayhi,Aleksandar Boljevic and Jordy de Wijs were on hand to help Jong PSV take a healthy lead against Den Bosch, although the former Irish man Barry Maguire restored some pride as he converted his penalty for the away on the 76th minute, although a Den Bosch come back wasn’t on the cards and the night only got worse for the away side on the 90th minute when Elvis Kabashi received a straight card.
Shadrach Eghan,Felitciano Zschusschen and Jari Oosterwijk got their names on the score sheet as their side Jong FC Twente defeated Fortuna Sittard 3-0. Although Jong Twente were reduced to ten men on the 87th minute as Peet Bijen was shown a straight red. The defeat leaves Fortuna 19th in the table, leaving them with a lot of work to do if they want to finish in a play-off spot by the end of the season.

One hell of a story

In his latest edition of his weekly column, Jos Boesveld returns with the story of young Dutchman who’s dream was snatched away from him…

Ever heard of Dylan de Braal? Never did I before a week ago. He’s a young kid that made his debut for RKC Waalwijk last Sunday. It’s something that has to be celebrated by the player, his family and the club of course. Bad luck for De Braal, because his debut only lasted three minutes.

Can you imagine to finally make your debut and just a few minutes later, your whole season is gone? In the Jupiler League, it happened. De Braal torn his ACL and should be out for at least six months. What a way to start your career.

It gets worse if you look into some of the information about this young defender. Five years ago, as a fourteen year old kid, De Braal was subject of a lawsuit, in which his father forced his amateur club to let De Braal take a try-out for a football school. De Braal and his family won and from that moment, his career would become more serious.

He landed in the youth academy of FC Den Bosch, but the player never made it in the first squad. In 2014 his contract expired, without any prospect of getting a new club. Two months later, RKC Waalwijk knocked on De Braals door. They offered him a one year contract and added him to the first squad. Happy times again for De Braal, until the first official match of the season.

RKC Waalwijk started their campaign in the Jupiler League against Roda JC. Van Braal was promised some playtime in this opening match, but thanks to a fault in the administration of RKC Waalwijk and FC Den Bosch, De Braal wasn’t allowed to play in that game. In an interview, the defender told some journalists that he had tears in his eyes when he heard the news.

Tears have also been shed again since the last match of RKC Waalwijk. De Braal already gave some new interviews and he told the press that he will come back a stronger player, but the upcoming six months and getting fit again after the rehabilitation, will be a tough nut to crack for a twenty year old player, with three minutes experience in professional football.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: WEEK SEVEN

Header-EredivisieReport

Here’s your weekly summary of the Eredivisie by Willem Slor.

Heerenveen hosted PSV and although both teams are not considered glamorous in its football, it didn’t take long to realize that this game was going to be a showstopper. The first chance for PSV came after 39 seconds while Heerenveen didn’t get a proper shot in till the eighth minute. However, the physical contact and tensions among the team players were already starting to rise early on in the game, and these were tensions that match official Kevin Blom could not control as a referee. After disallowing two borderline insignificant fouls in PSV’s penalty box, which lead to permanent premature balding for Heerenveen fans, Heerenveen suffered a red card after 33 minutes when a bad free kick send PSV’s striker Jozefzoon off to the races and hitting the deck in a breakthrough. Red card for Heerenveen because of what the announcer of the game at the time called “ you can barely call that a foul”.

But, Heereveen was more hungry for the win than PSV, so much so that the Eindhoven side did not impress anyone, not even themselves. They showed the lack of motivation and power, which has lead to a lot of internal anger in the team. They get even more outraged when PSV suffered a red card after an “idiotic” foul send a PSV defender of the field in the 69th minute. Now level in men, it didn’t take long for Heerenveen to show that they wanted it more. In the 78th minute, a perfect attack between three Heereveen players send the ball past the goal of PSV. It took a 1-0 lead for Heerenveen for PSV to start attacking more than it did.

But it was pointless as after 95 minutes, Heerenveen took the three points and claimed 14 points after they’ve really stuck their necks out there and came up as winners. The mixed feelings of the coaches were logical: Lodeweges (Heereveen) was “really happy” for “being the boss” on the pitch, while Cocu was “angry”, stating, “there is no excuse” for the weak performance that they showed. Heereveen keeps climbing up while PSV is showing troubles early in the season.

Excelsior and Cambuur met for the first time in Eredivisie history and both displayed good forms against each other. Excelsior gained a 1-0 lead in the 22th minute by Van Weert, who was having trouble scoring in general but used a little help from Nienhuis’ unfortunate rebound to claim his goal. Cambuur had the majority of the possession, but Excelsior had the majority of shots in the first half. In the second half, after a turned down goal by Excelsior, Ogbeche evens the game at 1-1 in the 62th minute, showing a small improvement in Cambuur’s ability to finish their shots on goal leading to receiving one point from the ordeal. Coach De Jong (Cambuur) said “it wouldn’t have been fair if we would’ve won. I am content with this score”, while Excelsior was unsatisfied after their goal was unrightfully called offside, to which the referee said: “I wish I would’ve seen these images then because I can now see that the goal was legitimate”. Cambuur barely scratches one point from the surface while Excelsior continues to face problems regarding the ability to collect points.

Twente and FC Utrecht matched up in the seventh round of the Eredivisie. Twente showed its imminent frustration this season by expressing their disorganization via the lack of coordination in the attacks. However, this overall gameplay by Twente occurred only after the first 15 minutes, because after the first 10 minutes of the game, a goal was produced out of the three early attacks that Twente had on Groningen. The first goal arrived in the fifth minute through a beautiful free kick by Ebecillio and Twente took the lead. Although having the majority of the ball, Mark Diemers was the first one who got a shot off for Utrecht, and that didn’t happen until the 32nd minute. However, they display better coordination than Twente but also had horrible misfortune: an own goal by Kum in the 64th minute seemed to seal the deal. However, Utrecht kept its head cool and started playing even more dominant than they already were playing. In the 71st minute, youngling Ayoub scored the 2-1 for Utrecht out of a beautiful volley. The hope for Utrecht that was rebuilt after that goal diminished as quick as it came. After a second yellow card given to Ayoub, the ten-manned Utrecht failed to control the mediocre play by Twente and the game ended in 3-1 after Castagnos strongly finished a shot on goal. Twente won its third game in a row, although Utrecht definitely deserved at least a tie. Schreuder (FC Twente) seems to acknowledge this: “We cannot be happy with our victory. Yes, we got three points but the way of playing was just bad”. Twente lacks leading qualities as Utrecht struggles to place the ball in the net. Final Score: 3-1.

FC Groningen & Willem II displayed unusual events as the referee became the highlight of the match. Groningen started strong and after 2 free kicks in just 1 minute, a handball by Botteghin caused a penalty, which was masterfully shot in the back of the net by De Leeuw. Afterwards, the referee did not call two very harsh-fouls, which lead the commentator, among others, to describe the events as “unbelievable”. A hands-ball in the opposite penalty box and a hard foul on a player from Willem II lead to serious confusion by the players from Tilburg.

In the second half, Groningen put even more pressure on Willem II but completely slacked off in defense as the clock dwindled down. The score stayed 1-0 but all in all, a bad game from both parties. FC Groningen luckily grabbed three points while Willem II cannot get themselves together to score any other goals.  Willem II coach Streppel had the following to say: “If the referee sees the replays of those two incidents, I’m sure he will feel bad about it”, while Van De Looi (Groningen) seemed unknowing about the subject: “I didn’t see it so the two moments in the box were unsure to me”.

In other games, Ajax annihilated NAC Breda 5-2, which marked a hat-trick by Sigthorsson, a goal by last week’s match winner Van Rhijn and defender Joel Veltman. NAC made it interesting around the 60th minute scoring the 1-3 and brought a moment of hesitation to Ajax, but was forced to accept its defeat. Frank de Boer stated to have “claimed revenge” due to last week’s “very, very bad” performance.

PEC Zwolle faced Heracles and produced a match containing 6 goals and a red card. The final score was 4-2 for PEC Zwolle, adding on to the problems at Heracles in regards to a severe lack of points.

ADO Den Haag met with AZ and through a beautiful goal in the 45th minute by AZ’s Poulsen, the score became 1-1 and the tide turned. AZ claimed victory with 2 goals to 3 in The Hague.

Go Ahead Eagles faced Feyenoord and was unmatched to the pressure and tempo created by Feyenoord. Feyenoord played well and made sure to acknowledge their coach Fred Rutten, who had been facing criticism in the last couple of weeks. Feyenoord silenced the critics with a 0-4 victory. Rutte: “I’m satisfied about the match and the team got their victory that they were waiting for”.

Lastly, Dordrecht and Vitesse put up a scoring frenzy as the dominant Vitesse won with 4 goals. Final score: 2-6.

After the seventh round in the Eredivisie, PEC Zwolle, Ajax, and PSV share first place while Heerenveen and Twente shortly follow in second and third place. AZ, Cambuur, and Groningen share fourth place, making the race for the top already as exciting as can be. Next week’s match to look for is Ajax-PEC Zwolle who will face each other at 16:45 local time in the ArenA on Saturday October 5th, 2014.

The home side came into this game missing striker Sam Larsson and having lost to Eerste Divisie side Roda JC 2-1 in the cup. Coach Dwight Lodeweges was scathing in his reflection on the game whilst captain Martin de Roon said the six senior players who played in that game had to take responsibility, not the 5 youngsters who were replaced for this game. PSV also brought an injury list with them as Andrés Guardado, Luuk de Jong and star player Memphis Depay were all missing, however PSV did manage to win their midweek cup game against FC Utrecht 2-0.

Despite it being goalless in the first half it was far from boring, the half had 18 attempts on goal and a red card to boot as well. PSV got themselves an early half chance in only the 38th second after Adam Maher just managed to keep the ball in on the sideline before playing a low cross to Jurgen Locadia but the ball bobbled just before the Dutch striker hit it and as a result it went wide of the near post. Heerenveen then took control of the game, pressing high and repeatedly forcing mistakes from PSV players. Their first chance came in the 5th minute when Joey van den Berg had a dangerous shot that looked goal bound but it his teammate, German frontman Mark Uth. They then had another chance only two minutes later when Daley Sinkgraven brilliantly controlled a long ball on his chest before knocking past a defender. Unfortunately he could only muster a weak shot and as a result Jeroen Zoet recovered the ball easily. Despite dominating, Heerenveen’s final ball wasn’t always great and as a result they sometimes struggled to break down the PSV defence. They nearly had a stroke of luck in the 21st minute when Joost van Aken mishit a long range effort and it was going well wide but Uth nearly ran onto it and had he been able to control it then he would’ve been through on goal.

The direction of the first half started to change after that chance with PSV starting to come back into the game. In the 26th minute Luciano Narsingh ran into the box before pulling the ball back for Georginio Wijnaldum who back heeled it to Florian Jozefzoon who hit a low curled effort towards the bottom corner but Kristoffer Nordfeldt in the Heerenveen net managed to change direction at the last second and push it just past the post. Heerenveen did have a couple of chances in the period of PSV dominance, these were both down to Jetro Willems, firstly when the ball was played to Luciano Slagveer on the right wing Willems slipped allowing Slagveer to race clear. Fortunately for Willems, Slagveer tried to square it for Uth rather than shoot himself and Jeffrey Bruma knocked it behind for a corner. Then both Willems and Sinkgraven went for the ball in the 32nd minute but Willems appeared to pull out allowing SInkgraven to cross for Uth who after controlling it with his chest hit a shot on the spin that was well saved by Zoet.

Then came the first of the two sending offs. Jozefzoon was put through and was in on goal when Stefano Marzo appeared to cut across the back of the PSV winger bringing him down. As Marzo was the last man he was sent off but replays showed that Jozefzoon had gone a bit theatrically although the red card was justifiable. Almost immediately afterwards Locadia went down in the box and half-heartedly appealed for a penalty but referee Kevin Blom wasn’t swayed and simply told the young striker to get back on his feet.

PSV threatened early in the second half as well, Adam Maher had a decent chance in the 53rd minute when he hit the side netting from a tight angle. The game swung back in Heerenveen’s favour in the 68th minute when Joshua Brenet was sent off for a challenge on Uth. It initially seemed harsh but replays showed that Brenet clearly had his studs up and caught Uth on his inner thigh after the ball had already gone. This forced Phillip Cocu to bring off striker Jurgen Locadia for defender Santiago Arias. Heerenveen’s pressure finally payed off in the 77th minute after some neat build-up play resulted in a goal for Daley Sinkgraven. Initially Slagveer had the ball just inside PSV’s half. He passed the ball to Uth who immediately gave it back with a lovely first time pass, Slagveer then drew in two PSV defenders creating space for Sinkgraven who he then subsequently passed to. The young Dutchman then appeared to get the ball stuck underneath his feet but then produced a lovely finish into the top corner leaving Zoet with no chance. PSV obviously needed to get back into the game but they were only able to muster up one decent opportunity which fell to Jeffrey Bruma. A shot from Wijnaldum was deflected off Doke Schmidt for a corner and the resulting ball in fell to the feet of Bruma but he could only put his effort over the bar.

EREDIVISIE PREVIEW: NAC Breda vs. Ajax

Header-EredivisiePreview

Ajax luckily took three points in last weekend’s De Klassieker with an amazing free kick from Ricardo Van Rhijn that sealed the win.

“A win what was a morel outrage” Feyenoord captain Jordy Clasie said in an interview after the game. With five shots and only three on target the whole game compared to Feyenoord having 18 and four something needs changing for the champions.

Is Serero lacking the strength a midfielder needs? Is Klaassen lacking creativity? Or does it lay deeper in defence as Feyenoord hit the woodwork three times in the opening 10 minutes. Either way a win is a win pretty or ugly and this one was ugly.

Maybe a 9-0 midweek demolition of the amateur side JOS Watergraafsmeer in the KNVB Beker has been used for a morale booster. Ricardo Kishna and Lucas Andersen getting one each Arek Milik grabbing six the later two potential starters this weekend. Lasse Schöne who missed De Klassieker is available but with APOEL Nicosia coming up midweek will be used sparingly. Niki Zimling looks certain to start possibly at the expense of Nick Viergever and Ajax only has Viktor Fischer not available due to injury.

De Boer will possibly go for Anwar El Ghazi, Milik and Andersen across the forward line which is a front three with goals in there. Ajax are undefeated in their last 14 matches against NAC in all competition. NAC have four first team players out injured. Gill Swerts, Henrico Drost, Elson Hooi and Erik Falkenburg so potential first starts of the season for Swedish defender Isak Ssewankambo and Kingsley Boateng.

Last weekend NAC Breda lost 2-1 to Willem II in an intense derby with former NAC player Robert Braber grabbing the winner late in added time. Follow that up with a scrappy 4-3 win midweek against SV Spakenburg tough times ahead for coach Nebojsa Gudelj and his team. NAC Breda have not scored against Ajax in their last five encounters but this could be the best time to do it with one eye on the Champions League match coming up and unbeaten in their last for home games.

PREDICTION

Even though Ajax are haven’t hit the ground running in the league and face APOEL midweek I feel they will be too much for injury stricken NAC Breda so I say 3-0 to Ajax sounds fair to me. Ajax won’t want to lose anymore ground to PSV and with their star man Depay out will look to close the two point gap and drive on from there.

INTERVIEW – NEC Nijmegen’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Header-Interview

Alireza Jahanbakhsh – an exotic name which suits this technical gifted player. The Iranian playmaker is currently at his second season with N.E.C Nijmegen. One year in the Eredivisie and this season in the Jupiler League.  TotalDutchFootball.com’s Martijn Hilhorst conducted an exclusive interview with the one and only ‘Prince of Persia’.

– What are the biggest differences between football in Iran and football in Holland?

‘In Iran players are more individually technical gifted while they don’t train on playing together. In the Netherlands I’ve learned to mix up technique and tactic’.

– In the beginning you had some adjustment issues in the Eredivisie, but eventually you were second in the ‘Talent of the Season’. What is your opinion about your first season in the Eredivisie?

‘It was a rough season, especially for the club. We lost many matches and we didn’t play well. Personally, I had some trouble adjusting in Holland. So, I was very happy that our fans had my back for the entire season. Despite the setbacks, I have developed myself significantly’.

– You said that you have developed greatly, but which qualities of yours (mentally or technically) approved significantly because of your transfer to an European competition?

‘Mentally I have become more disciplined. I came to N.E.C. to develop myself and completely focus on football and so far it’s a success.

– What is your greatest (personal) success with N.E.C?

‘It’s a bit odd to say, because we now know the previous seasons unfortunately ended with the relegation, but my two goals in the away game versus Ajax were amazing. The relieve in our team was huge and  the fans where absolutely brilliant. Truly unbelievable.

– How difficult was the transition from playing on a World Cup to playing in the Jupiler League?

‘You really cannot compare it. With the WC you compete against the best players in the world. Iran did a good job if you look at our capacities. I couldn’t be more proud. Now, I am back with N.E.C and we are trying to become the champions in the Jupiler League this season, which is also an enormous challenge’.

– Wasn’t it hard for you to see teammates finding new clubs after the relegation?

‘No,  it really wasn’t. I have to admit that it was a restless period, but I’m glad to still play at N.E.C. Of course, I have personal ambitions, but the conditions at N.E.C are tremendous and I am really looking forward to this season. Our team is really solid this season. We do have a great mix of personalities. And we all have the same goal this season: promotion.’

– You already scored four goals. With which amount of goals would you be satisfied?

‘I really cannot put a number on it. Of course, I would be thrilled with a lot of goals, but an assist is also a fantastic thing to do. I just want to be important for our team. I don’t mind if my addition to this are goals, assists or setting up some great attacks’.

– What is your ultimate goal for your football career? A certain competition or club? Or maybe international success with Iran?

On short term that would be qualifying for the Asian Cup with Iran and the Olympics in March 2015. My ultimate goal? To inspire young Iranian kids growing up without a typical western football world with nice fields and accommodations. This isn’t required to achieve success. You can become successful without those things if you truly believe in yourself and work hard.

We at TotalDutchFootball.com are truly grateful that N.E.C Nijmegen gave us permission for this interview. See you next season in the Eredivisie!

The KNVB Beker – Amsterdam, here we come…

Jos Boesveld describes the beauty of Dutch cup football in his latest column.

In Cup football , every year there are surprises. Normally, it’s about an amateur club who defeats a team from the Eredivisie, but this year is pretty different. It’s the draw that excites me. An all-Amsterdam derby and it’s happening tonight. No way I’m not going to be there.

There are three reasons that I’m going to the match as JOS Watergraafsmeer face Ajax. The first one is simple, my first name plays against Ajax. JOS, how often do you get that? I had a pretty good laugh and everyone is telling me that there is a team that’s has the same name as my first name. Like I didn’t know that. There’s also a town in Nigeria that’s called Jos, but that aside.

The second reason I have, is because this is the first time in years (the last time was in 1983) that two teams from Amsterdam compete against each other in a professional competition. If I had to name one team I support in the Eredivisie, it will be Ajax. I love their style of play since I was a little boy and with their history, it’s the biggest club in the Netherlands.

The third and maybe most important reason, is that the game will not be played at Sportpark Drie Burg, where JOS Watergraafsmeer normally plays their matches. The event is held at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. A beautiful arena where many battles have been fought. Ajax played the important matches in that stadium till 1996.

The last game at the Olympic Stadium was Ajax – Panathinaikos in the Champions League. Ajax ruled the (football)world, after winning the big trophy in 1995 and in 1996 they reached the finals again. The match against Panathinaikos in Amsterdam was lost, 0-1. For over eighteen years, this  match stands as the last official match, played in the Olympic Stadium. No more, say Ajax fans. If the Olympic Stadium goes down in history with the last official match being between two real, Amsterdam clubs, I want to be there when history is written.
