EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Nine

The Eredivisie returned this past weekend and Steven Davies is on hand with a comprehensive rundown of week nine’s action.

With the second international break of the season having come and gone, the ninth round of matches in the Eredivisie got belatedly underway on Saturday evening at the Stadion Galgenwaard where FC Utrecht, with just one win in the league all season, welcomed Erik ten Hag’s former club, Go Ahead Eagles – who arrived in Utrecht with four points from the last six.

While ten Hag could look back fondly on his lone season in charge in Deventer which culminated in the Eagles gaining promotion via the promotion/relegation playoffs in 2013, there was little room for sentimentality here, with the home side in particular, desperately in need of a win to kick start what has been a faltering campaign thus far for last season’s KNVB Beker finalists.

However, it was the visitors who began the game on the front foot and squandered a host of opportunities before the home side took the lead against the run of play four minutes before the half time interval – Sebastien Haller turning sharply on the edge of the area before unleashing a rasping drive that visiting ‘keeper Theo Zwarthoed could only parry into the path of Giovanni Troupee who managed to get enough on the rebound to send the ball looping into the back of an unguarded net.

Following a slow start to the match, the home side began the second stanza much the brighter thanks to their half time lead and doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute – Ajax loanee, Richairo Zivkovic, having found himself one on one with Zwarthoed, managed to beat the ‘keeper but not the bar before Rico Strieder tucked away the rebound.

With Hans de Koning’s men forced to throw caution to the wind in order to get back into the contest, it came as little surprise when the home side capitalised – catching the visitors on the counter attack with 25 minutes left to play – Haller finding Zivkovic, who broke the Eagles’ offside trap before slotting the ball past Zwarthoed to seal all three points for the home side.

However, the Eagles did almost grab a consolation via the unlikeliest of sources – Willem Janssen almost putting the ball in his own net when his seemingly innocuous back pass sent home ‘keeper Robbin Ruiter scrambling to clear the ball off his own goal line with nine minutes left to play.

At the same time, honours were left even at Het Kasteel where Sparta Rotterdam and Willem II shared four goals.

A double from Spanish marksman, Fran Sol either side of half time briefly saw the visitors look like recording their first victory in the league since beating Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA on 20th August. However, Alex Pastoor’s side, who had lost just one of their last four league games coming into this match, rallied to earn a share of the spoils – Aussie, Craig Goodwin getting the hosts back into the contest with 21 minutes remaining before Thomas Verhaar popped up in the last minute to complete the comeback.

With one eye on a daunting trip to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, reigning champions, PSV Eindhoven were surprisingly held at home by Heracles – Samuel Armenteros capitalising on some ponderous play in defence by Siem de Jong to steal in and prod the ball past an irate Jeroen Zoet six minutes before half time before the hosts tied up the scores just two minutes later when a vicious header from Luuk de Jong (in his 100th appearance for PSV) could only be parried by visiting ‘keeper, Bram Castro into the path of Gaston Pereiro – the Uruguayan making no mistake from close range.

With just one loss in their last eleven games in all competitions, in-form AZ Alkmaar welcomed an inconsistent Vitesse Arnhem to the AFAS Stadion on Saturday night.

With two wins and two losses in the league coming into this encounter, Henk Fraser’s men were in need of a good start and they got just that – Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker putting the visitors ahead on 23 minutes before Ricky van Wolfswinkel doubled the men from Arnhem’s advantage from the penalty spot just before the hour.

However, that inconsistency would rear its ugly head once more – Robert Muhren pulling the home side back into the contest with twelve minutes to go before earning the men from Alkmaar a share of the spoils with his second with three minutes left to play.

With just one loss in their nine competitive matches in all competitions this term, SC Heerenveen are one of the form teams in the country and Jurgen Streppel’s charges continued their winning ways by putting three past fierce local rivals FC Groningen at the Noordlease Stadion on Saturday night.

Arber Zeneli gave the visitors the lead as early as the 7th minute before the hosts found themselves reduced to ten men when Australian defender, Jason Davidson was given his marching orders by referee, Richard Liesveld nine minutes before half time.

Sam Larsson doubled the visitor’s advantage with 17 minutes left to play before the hosts found their numbers reduced further still – Samir Memisevic receiving a second yellow card from referee, Liesveld just three minutes later.

Iranian international, Reza Ghoochannejhad rubbed salt into the wounds of Groningen’s nine men – making it three with eight minutes left to play.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began with another pair of local rivals coming head-to-head, this time at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede, where Twente played host to PEC Zwolle.

The hosts came into this encounter unbeaten in their last three league matches and began the brighter – referee, Dennis Higler pointing to the spot when South African midfielder, Kamohelo Mokotjo was brought down in the area by Zwolle centre half, Philippe Sandler with just eight minutes on the clock. Mateusz Klich made no mistake with the resultant penalty kick to put the hosts into the ascendancy.

After a wretched start to the campaign for Ron Jans’ side, things had finally begun to look up following a much needed home victory over ADO Den Haag just prior to the international break and the visitors were back on level terms five minutes before the break – Youness Mokhtar shrugging off the attentions of home centre half, Peet Bijen before cutting in from the left and slotting the ball past Twente glovesman, Nick Marsman.

Shell shocked, Rene Hake’s men rallied in the second stanza and created a host of opportunities which included Enes Unal rattling Mickey van der Hart’s crossbar in the 69th minute.

However, the Manchester City loanee, would eventually find his breakthrough – the Turk smashing in a first time strike from just inside the area following a perfect ball from fellow Manchester City loanee, Bersant Celina with 13 minutes left on the clock.

At that point, the home side may have felt that the points were safe but the Enschede outfit were stunned for a second time six minutes from time when substitute, Django Warmerdam cut in from the right and unleashed a howitzer from well outside the area that beat the despairing dive of home ‘keeper, Marsman to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.

Roda came into their meeting with Excelsior at the Stadion Woudestein on Sunday afternoon without a win anywhere this term and having not scored a goal since a last gasp equaliser by Tom van Hyfte at the Amsterdam ArenA on 13th August.

So when Danish midfielder, David Boysen popped up shortly before the hour mark to not only end the goal scoring drought but also ultimately the seemingly eternal search for a victory for the men from Kerkrade in 2016/17, it came as a welcome relief for Yannis Anastasiou’s beleaguered side who climbed off the foot of the table as a result.

League leaders, Feyenoord came into their meeting with NEC Nijmegen having made history as the first side this century to have won their first eight Eredivisie matches and were looking to make it nine in a row ahead of next Sunday’s Klassiker at De Kuip.

However, Peter Hyballa’s charges weren’t about to roll out the welcome mat for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s table topper’s – Mohamed Rayhi hitting Julian van Haacke’s deflected pass first time from the edge of the area to deceive former NEC stopper, Brad Jones and put the hosts into the ascendancy after just eight minutes of play at De Goffertstadion.

The visitors, with one eye not only on the visit of Ajax but also on a UEFA Europa League encounter with Zorya Luhansk at De Kuip on Thursday evening, had to wait until eleven minutes from time to get back on level terms – substitute, Steven Berghuis rattling Joris Delle’s right hand upright before Dirk Kuyt was denied by a combination of both the French ‘keeper and his other post before Nicolai Jorgensen eventually scrambled the ball over the line.

The league leaders weren’t finished and managed to preserve their 100% record in the league a minute into added time – a Berghuis header from the edge of the area falling to goal scorer, Jorgensen whose half volley rebounded off Dalle’s left hand upright and into the path of substitute, Michiel Kramer who secured a ninth successive victory for the Rotterdam giants from close range.

Feyenoord’s last gasp victory in Nijmegen put the pressure on second placed Ajax who in turn responded by dispatching ADO Den Haag with the minimum of fuss at the Kyocera Stadion in the final match of the weekend.

The visitors, who face a tricky trip to Spain to face Celta Vigo in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, took the lead in the 20th minute when Lasse Schone teed up skipper, Davy Klaassen with a perfectly weighted chip into the ADO area, which the Dutch international slotted past Lithuanian international ‘keeper, Ernestas Setkus.

De Godenzonen doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half – Amin Younes escaping the clutches of two men before sliding in a perfectly weighted pass for Chelsea loanee, Bertrand Traore who ensured that Peter Bosz’s men would travel to De Kuip five points adrift of their fierce rivals from Rotterdam.

On the other hand, things are looking dire for Zeljko Petrovic’s men who have now lost their last five league games on the spin – their excellent early season form now a rapidly fading memory.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Eight

Header-EredivisieReport

Week eight is in the books, Feyenoord keep on winning as PSV drop more points. Here is Steven Davies with a full rundown of the action.

Image result for feyenoord willem ii

With the second international break of the season looming just around the corner, the eighth week of action in the Dutch top flight got underway on Friday evening at the MAC3PARK Stadion where struggling PEC Zwolle played host to an ADO Den Haag side whose fantastic start to the season seems to be fading fast.

The hosts came into this encounter still winless in the league and on the back of two straight defeats – although they had tasted victory – dispatching DVS ’33 in the KNVB Beker, a win which had, no doubt, restored some belief amongst Ron Jans’ charges while Zeljko Petrovic’s  men arrived in Zwolle on the back of three straight defeats and were desperately looking to rediscover their early season form.

However, despite taking the lead just after the restart through a Tom Trybull strike from the edge of the area, a Youness Mokhtar double in the 51st and then twenty minutes from time – capping a weaving run from the left which saw him turn ADO full back, Jose San Roman inside out before smashing the ball into the roof of Ernestas Setkus’ net, turned the score line on its head and when goal scorer, Trybull was given his marching orders by referee, Bjorn Kuipers for his second bookable offence with nine minutes left to play, the hosts were, at last, able to celebrate their first league win of the campaign, at the eighth time of asking.

Vitesse Arnhem, with just one win in their last four league matches, welcomed an improving FC Groningen side, unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions, to the GelreDome on Saturday evening.

Ernest Faber’s visitors began the match exuding a confidence that had been absent in the early weeks of the season and took the lead from the spot through former Ajax and Fulham striker, Danny Hoesen with just five minutes on the clock.

However, the hosts rallied and tied the game up just prior to the half time interval through a well-placed free kick by impressive Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker before turning the score line on its head through a tap in from close range by Kelvin Leerdam with fourteen minutes remaining to seal a much needed win for Henk Fraser’s side.

Following a long trip to Rostov that had, in the end, yielded only a point in the UEFA Champions League in mid-week, Phillip Cocu’s PSV Eindhoven turned their attention back to domestic matters on Saturday evening and arrived at the Abe Lenstra Stadion looking to make up ground on league leaders, Feyenoord.

However, Jurgen Streppel’s, Heerenveen came into this encounter with the reigning champions with five wins from their last five matches in all competitions and it was the hosts who, against the run off play, struck first 18 minutes from time through Arber Zeneli’s fourth league goal of the season following a well-placed right wing cross from Luciano Slagveer that cut out the entire PSV rear guard and left the 21-year-old with the simplest of finishes.

Having squandered a multitude of chances to take the lead themselves, the visitors were back on level terms just three minutes later – Jeremiah St. Juste turning a Gaston Pereiro cross into his own net to leave both sides with an unsatisfying point.

Elsewhere on Saturday evening, two sides in dismal form met in Kerkrade where Roda played host to NEC Nijmegen.

The visitors arrived at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion with just one point from a possible twelve in their last four matches, a record which they shared with their hosts who came into this match without a win anywhere in 2016/17 and having lost five of their last six matches in all competitions and things didn’t get any better for Yannis Anastasiou’s side as they succumbed to a lone Kevin Mayi strike 12 minutes from time to leave the Kerkrade outfit rooted to the foot of the Eredivisie standings.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was concluded in Deventer where a buoyant Go Ahead Eagles, who had taken four points from the last nine in the league, welcomed Mitchell van der Gaag’s Excelsior, who arrived at De Adelaarshorst boasting a similar record from their last three league games.

A last gasp Sam Hendriks strike in Alkmaar the previous week had seen Hans de Koning’s men record their first point on the road since returning to the Eredivisie, instilling a belief that the side that had won promotion back to the top flight of Dutch football through the arduous end of season promotion/ relegation playoffs at the first time of asking could avoid a swift return to the second tier.

Much of this newfound confidence can be attributed to the play of inspirational skipper, Sander Duits, whose blockbuster finish at the AFAS Stadion had set the Eagles on the comeback trail and Duits was on hand once again to put the home side ahead with just 11 minutes on the clock when he connected with a Sinan Bytyqi corner – beating visiting ‘keeper, Tom Muyters with a glancing header at the near post.

Another reason for the recent upturn of the Deventer based outfit’s fortunes has been some shrewd manoeuvrings in the transfer market – not least the acquisition, on a season long loan, of Manchester City’s, Sinan Bytyqi, whose corner laid on the opening goal of the match for Duits and whose all-round play garnered man of the match honours.

The 21-year-old Kosovar international was also inadvertently involved in the host’s second goal – being felled in the area by Excelsior centre half, Jurgen Mattheij which led to referee, Edwin van der Graaf pointing to the spot from which last week’s last gasp goal scoring hero, Sam Hendriks made no mistake – doubling the host’s advantage.

Any chance the visitors had of getting back into the contest evaporated when Danilo Pantic was given his marching orders by van der Graaf for his second bookable offence shortly before the hour mark and when Hendriks dispatched his second goal of the game from the spot with 18 minutes left to play, the game was effectively over for van der Gaag’s charges.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began at the Amsterdam ArenA where Ajax, who secured a seventh win in succession in all competitions with a narrow 1-0 victory over Belgian side, Standard Liege in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, played host to a FC Utrecht side who arrived in Amsterdam on the back of two straight wins in all competitions.

The newfound confidence of Erik ten Hag’s side was evident just short of the half hour mark when Kevin Conboy headed the visitors in front following a pinpoint cross from Yassin Ayoub.

However, the early season jitters that saw points dropped at home to the likes of Roda JC and Willem II appear to be a thing of the past for Peter Bosz’s men and the hosts were back on level terms shortly after the half time interval – Amin Younes shrugging off the attentions of Giovanni Troupee before putting in a cross from the left which Utrecht centre half, Ramon Leeuwin could only redirect beyond the reach of visiting ‘keeper, Robbin Ruiter into the back of his own net.

With thirteen minutes remaining, Rico Strieder was adjudged by referee, Bas Nijhuis, to have handled a speculative drive from Nick Viergever just inside the visitor’s area – Nijhuis pointing to the spot from which Lasse Schone made no mistake to put the hosts into the ascendancy.

The home side secured all three points three minutes from time when a long diagonal ball from Viergever was allowed to bounce through the visitor’s defence all the way to the feet of Hakim Ziyech who got enough on the ball to direct it around the stranded Ruiter and into the back of the net to notch his first Eredivisie goal for de Godenzonen.

The visitors did manage to put one or two doubts in the minds of the Amsterdam faithful in the last minute when Mark van der Maarel latched onto a square ball put across the face of goal by Willem Janssen following another Ayoub cross, just seconds after having come onto the field but the hosts held on to secure their eighth win in succession in all competitions to remain five points adrift of league leaders, Feyenoord and two ahead of third placed, PSV.

Honours were left even in Almelo following the local derby between Heracles and rivals, FC Twente at the Polman Stadion – Polish midfielder, Mateusz Klich giving Rene Hake’s men the lead from the penalty spot five minutes before the half time interval before a Samuel Armenteros header drew the home side level just two minutes later.

At the same time, Feyenoord arrived at the Koning Willem II Stadion in Tilburg for their meeting with Willem II having surrendered their 100% record in all competitions by going down to defeat by a single goal to Fenerbahce in Turkey on Thursday evening.

However, with seven wins from their seven Eredivisie matches thus far and their hosts winless in their last five in all competitions, it came as little surprise when Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men took the lead just after the quarter hour – Danish marksman, Nicolai Jorgensen converting a cut back from the right by-line by Bilal Basacikoglu with a deft inside of the heel finish that left Willem II’s former Feyenoord ‘keeper, Kostas Lamprou rooted to the spot.

The league leaders ensured that their 100% record in the Eredivisie would continue when second half substitute, Renato Tapia ghosted past three men before beating the exposed Lamprou to secure all three points.

The eighth round of action was brought to a close at Het Kasteel in Rotterdam where Alex Pastoor’s, Sparta Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar – fresh from a five goal drubbing in Russia at the hands of Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, couldn’t be separated – 18-year-old, Guus Til heading home from an IIiass Bel Hassani cross from the right with just 6 minutes on the clock to put the visitors into the ascendancy before veteran centre half, Michel Breuer stabbed the hosts level from close range 6 minutes before the half time interval, to leave honours even despite the hosts being reduced to ten men in the dying moments of the match – Denzel Dumfries receiving his marching orders from referee, Richard Liesveld after collecting his second yellow card of the afternoon.

Magic from Dolberg enough to make Liege challenge disappear

A lone Kasper Dolberg strike in the 28th minute of their Group G encounter with Standard Liège was enough to see Ajax make it two wins from two in group play in the UEFA Europa League reports Steven Davies.

THURSDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 2016

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE – GROUP G

AJAX 1-0 STANDARD LIEGE

Following an indifferent performance against Panathinaikos that nonetheless yielded all three points from a tricky trip to Greece, former four time European Champions, Ajax welcomed Belgian side Standard Liege to the Amsterdam ArenA on the back of a six game winning streak that has seen Peter Bosz’s charges reassert themselves into the title picture in the Eredivisie while also recording wins in both domestic and continental cup competitions.

Peter Bosz named a largely unchanged side from the weekend victory over PEC Zwolle –the inclusion of Serbian international, Nemanja Gudelj at the expense of Hakim Ziyech being the only change for the hosts – Chelsea loanee, Bertrand Traore continuing on the right with Kasper Dolberg preferred once again down the middle of the front three while Daley Sinkgraven was again deployed at left back.

Image result for AJAX 1-0 STANDARD LIEGE

Recently appointed Standard Liege coach, Aleksandar Jankovic named the same starting eleven that had begun the 2016 Belgian Cup winners’ 3-0 win over Eupen on Sunday – a line-up that included a return for former Ajax midfielder, Eyong Enoh who spent six years in Amsterdam and was a part of two title winning sides under former coach, Frank de Boer while also lifting the KNVB Beker under Martin Jol in 2010.

In front of a sparse yet vocal crowd, it was the visitors who were out of the blocks the quickest – Benito Raman, high on confidence – having netted in each of his last three games in all competitions, flashing a shot wide of Andre Onana’s right hand upright with just two minutes on the clock while Mathieu Dossevi tested the Cameroon international’s handling four minutes later.

The hosts gradually began to find their feet in the match and it was Traore – looking far more comfortable in his wider role, who carved the host’s first clean cut opportunity in front of goal – cutting in from the right before sidestepping two defenders and testing the handling of Catania loanee, Jean-Francois Gillet in the Liege nets with a low drive with twelve minutes gone.

The man on loan from Chelsea continued to pull the strings for the Amsterdam giants – playing a neat slide rule pass for Amin Younes who then fed Davy Klaassen – the Dutch international drawing a point bank save from the Liege ‘keeper just past the quarter hour before Dolberg worked the Standard glovesman with a neat headed flick on from the resultant corner from Gudelj.

The hosts, who tasted success in the UEFA Cup – the previous guise of the UEFA Europa League, in 1992, continued to turn up the pressure as the game neared the half way point of the first half – Colombian centre half, Davinson Sanchez – who bagged a brace in the weekend victory over PEC Zwolle, dragging an attempt from the edge of the visitor’s area wide of the mark.

The pressure told a couple of minutes short of the half hour mark when Traore picked up the ball from Gudelj on half way before finding Dolberg, who evaded the attentions of Standard skipper, Adrien Trebel – whose wayward pass Gudelj had initially intercepted, before slotting the ball past Gillet for the 18-year-old, Dane’s sixth goal of the season to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The hosts should have extended their lead a minute before the half time break when Traore cut in from the right, finding Klaassen on the edge of the Standard area whose perfect one touch pass found goal scorer, Dolberg who attempted to return the favour as Gillet rushed out to narrow the Dane’s angle of opportunity –Klaassen being beaten to the punch on the line by Cameroonian defender, Collins Fai who cleared the danger to keep the visitors in the game.

Following a quiet opening to the second stanza, the visitors unexpectedly almost found themselves on level terms when a miscommunication between centre half, Nick Viergever and Onana sent the Cameroonian stopper scrambling – managing to stick out a leg to avoid a calamitous own goal twelve minutes after the resumption.

But the Ajax ‘keeper was off his line smartly in the 67th minute to deny Dossevi a goal scoring opportunity when, following a flick on from Algerian target man, Ishak Belfodil, the Togo international had found himself in acres of space at the back post.

The host’s awoke from their slumber as the game entered the final twenty minutes – Nemanja Gudelj sending a free kick from just outside the area inches wide of Gillet’s right hand post with eighteen minutes to play.

Three minutes later, substitute Mateo Cassierra broke free and teed up his captain who in turn laid the ball on for an onrushing Younes whose shot was deflected wide of Gillet’s left hand upright from just inside the area.

Despite time rapidly running out for the visitors, the game was by no means safe for de Godenzonen – just a minute later Standard substitute, Jean-Luc Dompe cut in from the left and burned off the attentions of Dutch international, Joel Veltman before seeing his goal-bound shot blocked by Sinkgraven

Then, with six minutes remaining, Isaac Mbenza picked up the ball on the edge of the Ajax area and bent a wicked curling effort onto Onana’s left hand upright with the home ‘keeper well beaten.

The game continued to seesaw from one end to the other when the hosts again threatened to make the game safe in the 89th minute – substitute, Jairo Riedewald threading an incisive ball through the centre of the visitor’s defence into the path of Cassierra but Gillet was quickly off his line to clear up the danger on the edge of his area.

Then, just seconds after the Colombian forward had fluffed an attempted volley from just outside the box, following a cushioned header from fellow substitute, Anwar El Ghazi, into the grateful hands of Gillet, the visitors threatened to snatch a point from the jaws of defeat – Dompe seeing his right-footed curling effort from just outside the area clawed out of the top left hand corner by Onana in the third minute of stoppage time.

However, try as they might, the visitors couldn’t force a breakthrough and, with six points from six in UEFA Europa League group play, Peter Bosz’s charges next face a trip to Spain to face Celta Vigo on 20th October.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Seven

Header-EredivisieReport

Due to the first round of the KNVB Beker affecting all teams in the top flight of Dutch football during the past week, the seventh round of play in the Eredivisie got belatedly underway on Saturday evening at the Kyocera Stadion in The Hague where ADO Den Haag played host to Heerenveen writes Steven Davies.

Image result for ado heerenveen

Despite contrasting fortunes of late in the league, ADO having lost their last two fixtures while Heerenveen arrived in The Hague on the back of three straight victories, both sides enjoyed cup success in midweek, in spite of both having been taken to extra time – Jurgen Streppel’s men eventually blew away the challenge of second tier upstarts, De Graafschap, while Zeljko Petrovic’s  side were taken to penalties by fellow Eredivisie side, NEC Nijmegen – the men from The Hague eventually prevailing to book their place in the second round of the competition where they will face Eerste Divisie opposition in the form of SC Telstar while Heerenveen will lock horns with another second tier outfit – FC Eindhoven.

Despite the exertions of mid-week the visitors appeared the sharper of the two from the off and took the lead when Wilfried Kanon turned the ball into his own net following a corner from the left with 26 minutes gone in the first half.

The extra effort of that spot kick success over NEC would become more apparent as the game entered the final quarter of an hour and it came as little surprise when the visitors extended their lead through Arber Zeneli with eleven minutes remaining before Henk Veerman received the ball from Sam Larsson on the edge of the area before unleashing a low drive to seal the Friesland outfit’s fifth win on the bounce in all competitions.

Elsewhere, despite both sides having found goals a-plenty as they progressed into the second round from their KNVB Beker ties at the expense of Tweede Divisie outfit, Excelsior Maassluis and fourth tier, VV Capelle respectively, the visit of John Stegeman’s Heracles to Ernest Faber’s, Groningen ended in stalemate with both sides guilty of squandering a multitude of chances in front of goal.

Image result for ajax pec zwolle

Ajax coach, Peter Bosz had rang the changes for de Godenzonen’s mid-week cup obliteration of Willem II and predictably made just as many again as the Amsterdam giants returned to Eredivisie action when they entertained bottom placed PEC Zwolle on Saturday evening.

The hosts came into this encounter on the back of five straight victories which, despite being somewhat unconvincing at times, had served to silence those who had doubted Bosz’s ability in the wake of his succession of Frank de Boer in the summer.

For the visitors, despite having progressed into the second round of the KNVB Beker in mid-week at the expense of fourth tier outfit, DVS ’33, two points from their opening six games saw the 2014 cup winners enter this match rock bottom with the knowledge that a Ron Jans’ coached team had never won at the Amsterdam ArenA.

With all that being said, it came as a shock when, with only four minutes on the clock, Wout Brama found sufficient time and space at the edge of the home side’s area to unleash a low drive that deceived Andre Onana in the Ajax net and gave Ron Jans’ side the lead.

Yet, any thoughts of unwanted records being broken were quickly dispelled as, just four minutes later, a Hakim Ziyech corner was flicked on by skipper, Davy Klaassen to Columbian centre half, Davinson Sanchez who, having found himself unmarked at the back post, headed the ball past Micky van der Hart in the Zwolle net.

Ajax, who entertains Standard Liège in UEFA Europa League action on Thursday, continued to pile on the pressure throughout the first half and it was another Ziyech corner that provided a perfect ball for Sanchez to head in his and Ajax’s second in the 38th minute.

Any thoughts of a comeback were dispelled early in the second period when Ziyech found Kasper Dolberg with a pinpoint pass from half way – the Swede slotting the ball past an exposed van der Hart to put the home side three up in the 55th minute.

Three became four just short of the hour mark as Chelsea loanee, Bertrand Traore cut in from the right (where he looked far more comfortable) and ghosted past two would-be defenders before smashing the ball past the flailing van der Hart.

The home side weren’t finished yet – Dolberg turning Ted van de Pavert inside out before unleashing a blistering strike from the edge of the area which crashed against the underside of the bar and (having been confirmed by goal-line technology) bounced behind the line to round off a dominant display for Peter Bosz’s men.

The first of Saturday evening’s late kick-off’s took place at the AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar where AZ – fresh from a routine cup win at Tweede Divisie outfit, Lienden and with one eye on a UEFA Europa League trip to Russia to face Zenit St. Petersburg on Thursday, entertained Go Ahead Eagles who themselves tasted cup success – beating Derde Divisie side, Dongen 3-1 on Wednesday evening to book their place in the second round of the competition where they will now face fifth tier outfit, Jodan Boys.

The Eagles’ cup success came as a welcome distraction for Hans de Koning’s side who have found the step up from the second tier to be a difficult one – coming into the game with just one win and four points from their opening six games and the visitors endured a difficult first period in Alkmaar – weathering wave upon wave of attacks from their hosts.

But, like their visit to Arnhem a week earlier, a penalty was to be their undoing – Ridgeciano Haps stepping in from the right and surging into the Eagles’ area only to have his progress abruptly ended by Lars Lambooij – Wout Weghorst sending Theo Zwarthoed to wrong way from the resultant spot kick.

The visitors began the brighter in the second half but had the wind taken from their sails when Weghorst latched onto a cross from Iliass Bel Hassani to beat Zwarthoed from close range.

Despite being two goals down away from home to a side who have UEFA Europa League commitments on Thursday evening, the Eagles were actually galvanised by their host’s second – skipper, Sander Duits reducing the arrears with a howitzer from well outside the area on 66 minutes.

And, just when it seemed that the game was over, a Randy Wolters cross from the left found the head of emergency striker, Kenny Teijsse whose header was flapped at by AZ ‘keeper, Sergio Rochet into the path of substitute, Sam Hendriks who gleefully snatched an unlikely point for the visitors from the jaws of defeat with just three minutes remaining.

Image result for excelsior psv

At the same time, Excelsior played host to reigning Eredivisie champions, PSV Eindhoven – both teams fresh from progressing into the second round of the KNVB Beker, having dispatched Barendrecht and Roda JC respectively in mid-week.

Philip Cocu’s men had a forthcoming trip to Russia on their minds ahead of their UEFA Champions League match with the side that eliminated Ajax from the competition, FC Rostov on Wednesday and arrived in Rotterdam with a point to prove after slipping up to Excelsior’s near neighbours, Feyenoord in last Sunday’s top of the table clash in Eindhoven.

Predictably then, it was the visitors who were out of the blocks the quickest – Luciano Narsingh playing a nice give and go with Bart Ramselaar inside the Excelsior area before poking the ball past Tom Muyters to give the reigning champions the lead on 21 minutes.

What wasn’t on the script was Excelsior grabbing an equaliser just four minutes later – Jetro Willems being harshly adjudged to have brought down Kevin Vermeulen inside the PSV area by referee, Danny Makkelie who immediately pointed to the spot from which Luigi Bruins made no mistake – sending Jeroen Zoet the wrong way.

Yet, the hosts failed to take their visitors into the break on level terms as, in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half, Luuk de Jong won a free kick from Excelsior defender, Jurgen Mattheij and promptly punished the centre half by heading in the resultant free kick from Andres Guardado from close range.

The game was made safe in the 83rd minute when Davy Propper connected with a Luciano Narsingh cross from the right to force the ball home with a low drive that substitute, Hicham Faik could only turn into his own net on the line.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action got underway with a second stalemate of the weekend – this time coming at the Goffertstadion in Nijmegen where two teams who endured cup exit’s in mid-week at the hands of fellow Eredivisie opposition – NEC and Willem II, cancelled each other out.

Despite having begun the week in disastrous fashion – being hit for five at home by a previously winless Groningen – Erik ten Hag’s FC Utrecht not only managed to find a first win of the season by beating FC Twente in the 1st round of the KNVB Beker in mid-week but also rounded off the week by recording their first Eredivisie victory of the season by dispatching newly promoted Sparta Rotterdam at the Stadion Galgenwaard.

The hosts got off to a flying start – Richairo Zivkovic netting his fourth goal in three games in all competitions with just three minutes on the clock.

However, despite taking such an early lead it took until the final ten minutes and a smart turn and strike from Nacer Barazite to ensure a first league win at the seventh time of asking for ten Hag’s men.

Elsewhere, the side that were eliminated at the hands of Utrecht in the cup in mid-week – FC Twente got back to winning ways at home to Henk Fraser’s Vitesse Arnhem.

The connection with the blue half of Manchester was evident again as Manchester City loanee, Enes Unal latched on to a pinpoint cross from the left by Dejan Trajkovski to put Rene Hake’s side a goal to the good on 16 minutes with his seventh goal in all competitions before fellow City loanee, Bersant Celina made it two after some good work by first, Jari Oosterwijk and then Chinedu Ede on the left five minutes from time to seal all three points for the hosts – a strike in the first minute of added time from Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker coming too little too late to salvage anything for the visitors.

The seventh round of play was rounded out at De Kuip in Rotterdam where league leaders, Feyenoord, fresh from a patchy performance on Thursday night as they began their defence of the KNVB Beker with victory over second tier outfit, FC Oss, put their 100% record in all competitions this season on the line against struggling Roda JC who came into this encounter off the back of being knocked out of the cup at the hands of PSV and with just one point from their last four league matches – the visitor’s last goal having been scored by Tom van Hyfte in the 91st minute of the Kerkrade outfit’s surprise 2-2 draw at the Amsterdam ArenA on 13th August.

Things would get worse for Yannis Anastasiou’s side after 25 minutes of the first half when a misplaced pass from centre half, Eric Botteghin was mishit by Ard van Peppen into the path of Feyenoord’s Danish marksman, Nicolai Jorgensen, who made no mistake – beating the exposed Roda ‘keeper, Benjamin van Leer from close range for his fifth goal of the season in all competitions.

Given their problems in front of goal, any thoughts the visitors may have harboured of a comeback were dispelled ten minutes before half time when Karim El Ahmadi latched on to a knock down by Jorgensen on the edge of the Roda area and unleashed a shot that took a slight deflection on its way into the back of van Leer’s net.

Feyenoord, who face a tough trip to Turkey to face Dirk Kuyt’s former club, Fenerbahce in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, heaped more misery on their visitors when centre half, Daryl Werker misplaced a headed clearance into the path of Jens Toornstra who, finding himself one on one with van Leer, unselfishly squared for Jorgensen to tap the ball into an empty net.

However, the hosts were not finished quite yet – a cross from the right from Bilal Basacikoglu finding Toornstra unmarked at the back post, whose sliding volley made it four with two minutes remaining.

A minute into stoppage time the hosts capped off a five star performance with a fifth goal – centre half, Terence Kongolo nodding in a Rick Karsdorp cross from the right to seal all three points for the hosts and ensure that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men would end the seventh week of play five points clear atop the Eredivisie standings.

KNVB BEKER REPORT: First Round

Header-KNVBBekerReport

The first round proper of the 2016/17 edition of the KNVB Beker got under way on Tuesday 20th September with Ernest Faber’s, Groningen travelling to the Sportpark ‘t Slot – the home of fourth tier outfit, Capelle writes Steven Davies

The Derde Divisie club, 8th in the Zaterdag table, came into the tie off the back of two successive defeats while by contrast, following a disastrous start to Ernest Faber’s reign – Groningen losing their opening three games of the season before picking up five points from the last nine available, including a first win of the season – a comprehensive five goal hammering of Utrecht last Friday, the Pride of the North were at last heading in the right direction and it came as little surprise that the Eredivisie side continued their recent resurgence at the expense of their fourth tier opponents – Danny Hoesen and Tom van Weert firing the visitors into a two goal lead with just a quarter of an hour on the clock before second half strikes by first, Hans Hateboer just after the hour and then Norwegian, Alexander Sorloth with eleven minutes remaining rounded off a convincing four goal victory and progression into the 2nd round of the competition for the 2015 cup winners.

Elsewhere, Groningen’s neighbours, Cambuur left it late to see off fourth tier, FC Rijnvogels and seal their place in the 2nd round of the competition – Martijn Barto scoring the only goal of the game in the 89th minute to spare the blushes of Rob Maas’ side.

Another second tier outfit, FC Emmen were given a similarly rough ride by Derde Divisie opposition in the form of Scheveningen – the fourth tier side having the audacity to take the lead through Tim Peters before two strikes in seven minutes through first, Cas Peters and then Tim Siekman late in the first half turned the score line on its head.

Yet, the Eerste Divisie side failed to add to their advantage in the second half and it was only when the home side were reduced to ten men – Levi Schwiebbe receiving his second yellow card of the match and with it his marching orders from referee, Laurens Gerrets, that Dick Lukkien’s charges could look forward to the 2nd round draw.

Elsewhere, fellow Eerste Divisie club, Almere City sealed their progress into the 2nd round of the competition at the expense of another Derde Divisie outfit, Rijnsburgse Boys thanks to a goal in either half from Yener Arica.

Another match-up that pitted fourth against second tier opposition took place at the Gemeentelijk Sportpark De Groenendijkse Kampen in Cuijk where JVC put up a brave fight against Michel Vonk’s, SC Telstar – the visitors, who came into the match on the back of a four game winning streak, leaping out to a two-goal lead at half time through first, Mohammed Ajnane and then Macedonian attacker, Denis Mahmudov before being pegged back by a strike from defender, Jorrit Ritzen just after the hour mark to leave the tie on a knife edge until the fourth minute of added time when Liban Abdulahi made the game safe.

Two Eerste Divisie heavyweights in mixed form came head to head at the Rat Varlegh Stadion in Breda where two first half goals from Torino Hunte saw VVV Venlo progress at the expense of Marinus Dijkhuizen’s NAC.

Another all Eerste Divisie clash took place at the Kras Stadion in Volendam where the hosts found themselves two goals down to visitors, MVV inside the first 34 minutes following strikes from Luis Pedro and Thomas Verheijdt before Jack Tuijp pulled a goal back for the home side early in the second half.

However, when Joeri Schroijen restored the visitor’s two goal advantage just after the hour mark it appeared that Ron Elsen’s men were heading for the 2nd round only for the 33-year-old, Tuijp to net twice in the space of seven minutes to complete his hat trick and send the game to extra time and then a penalty shoot-out from which the hosts emerged victorious by five spot kicks to four – Florian Loshaj missing the tenth and ultimately decisive spot kick.

Fellow Eerste Divisie outfit, RKC Waalwijk had an altogether easier time of things – dispatching fourth tier, EVV, through second half strikes by Fredua Benson, Pieter Langedijk and Serginho Greene.

Another all-Eerste Divisie encounter saw FC Eindhoven edge out hosts, FC Den Bosch at the Timmermans Infra Stadion De Vliert by the odd goal in five – Mart Lieder opening the scoring in the 11th minute before Arda Havar levelled for the home side on 24 minutes. Lieder restored the visitor’s advantage with eleven minutes remaining but when Mario Bilate brought the home side back on level terms with seven minutes to play it seemed that the game was heading for extra time until PSV loanee, Rai Vloet popped up to snatch a winner in the dying moments for Ricardo Moniz’s men.

Elsewhere, despite there being two divisions between them, a lone Nigel Hasselbaink goal was all that separated Mitchell van der Gaag’s, Excelsior and stubborn Tweede Divisie outfit, Barendrecht.

The first upset of the round came at the Sportpark De Westmaat where IJsselmeervogels dumped out Eerste Divisie side, Achilles ’29 – the home side hitting their more illustrious visitors for three through strikes by Sherwin Grot, Ali Akla and Christiaan van Hussen before substitute, Brian Boogers tucked away a consolation for Eric Meijers’ men with six minutes left on the clock.

Another upset occurred at the Sportpark De Zwaaier where Hemond Sport were hit for three without response by another Tweede Divisie club, Kozakken Boys – Raily Ignacio, Gwaeron Stout and Everton Pires Tavares with the goals that put the third tier outfit into the hat for the 2nd round.

It took a penalty shoot-out to separate third tier, HHC and fifth tier Jodan Boys – the Hoofdklasse outfit surprising their hosts after the game ended 2-2 – Rob van der Leij giving the home side the lead before the visitors had levelled through Fanny Waandels with 20 minutes remaining. With the score level after 90 minutes the game entered extra time where the sides traded a goal a-piece – Adil Akanioui putting the visitors into the ascendancy after 111 minutes only for Andrej Piljic to tie things up two minutes later. After a tension filled penalty shoot-out, Anouar Chairi’s spot kick was enough to see the fifth tier club into the second round – 7-6.

Tuesday’s cup action was concluded at the Abe Lenstra Stadion where it took extra time to separate Jurgen Streppel’s Heerenveen from Eerste Divisie opposition in the form of De Graafschap.

Go Ahead Eagles’ loanee, Elvio van Overbeek put the Eerste Divisie side ahead with 23 minutes to play and looked to have secured a famous win for the second tier side until Henk Veerman popped up with his second goal in as many games with 86 minutes on the clock to send the game into extra time.

However, any thoughts the visitors may have harboured of springing an upset over their Eredivisie hosts were well and truly obliterated as the Friesland outfit rattled in four goals without reply  – Veerman netting his second of the match before strikes by Arber Zeneli, Younes Namli and Stijn Schaars gave the eventual score line a convincing but rather misleading look.

Wednesday’s cup action kicked off at the Sportpark De Biezen in Dongen where Go Ahead Eagles eventually saw off their hosts – finding three goals in the last 13 minutes through Xandro Schenk, Kenny Teijsse and Sam Hendriks having trailed their fourth tier opposition for the majority of the contest after Jorik Mijnhijmer had put the Derde Divisie side into the ascendancy in the 14th minute.

Reigning Eredivisie champions, PSV Eindhoven made short work of their visitors from Kerkrade in their all-Eredivisie encounter with Roda JC  – a Davy Propper double along with strikes from Gaston Pereiro and Luciano Narsingh seeing Phillip Cocu’s men safely into the hat for the second round of the competition.

However, it certainly wasn’t all plane sailing for another Eredivisie side, Heracles – who required extra time to see off Tweede Divisie outfit, Excelsior Maassluis after Vincent Vermeij’s 56th minute strike had been cancelled out eight minutes from time by Daan Smith. Yet, extra time proved a bridge too far for the underdogs – Vermeij claiming his second of the game in the 112th minute before Brandley Kuwas ensured John Stegeman’s side’s presence into the second round of the competition three minutes into added time.

Another all-Eredivisie clash took place at the Goffertstadion in Nijmegen where it took a penalty shoot out to separate NEC and visitors, ADO Den Haag who had to wait until extra time before troubling the scoreboard – an own goal by Gregor Breinburg putting the home side ahead in the 105th minute before Gervane Kastaneer brought the men from The Hague back into the contest with 114 minutes on the clock. But, with the sides unable to be separated, it was Zeljko Petrovic’s side that prevailed in the resultant penalty shoot-out.

Eredivisie new boys, Sparta Rotterdam killed off the challenge of their visitors from Dordrecht by half time – strikes from Mart Dijkstra, Thomas Verhaar and an own goal from Joris Kramer effectively ending the tie as a contest despite Alvin Daniels adding a second half consolation for the visitors before goal scorer Verhaar was sent for an early shower with twelve minutes remaining having picked up his second yellow card of the match.

Elsewhere, Tweede Divisie side, VVSB easily saw off fifth tier outfit, Achilles Veen – goals from Maikey Parami, Vladimir Jozic, Giovialli Serbony and Younes Seghrouchni putting the third tier side out of reach with more than a quarter of an hour still to play before Sezer Sulun restored some respect for the Hoofdklasse side in the 81st minute.

A lone strike from Mart van de Gevel was enough to see UNA past visitors, Huizen, while, ASWH surprisingly hit Tweede Divisie outfit, De Treffers for three in the first half of their tie through goals from Peter de Lange, Peter Verhoeve and Bart Deprez to join UNA in the hat for the second round of the competition.

Another shock came at the Sportpark De Westmaat where third tier side, Spakenburg upset Eerste Divisie opposition in the form of Fortuna Sittard by two goals to one – Olivier Pilon and Danny van den Meiracker putting the Tweede Divisie outfit two goals to the good before a late response from Abdelaziz Khalouta made for a tense final quarter of an hour.

Despite posting four goals in their tie with Tweede Divisie side, FC Lieden, AZ Alkmaar had to wait until the dying moments to truly kill off their third tier opposition – Muamer Tankovic giving John van den Brom’s side the lead with 37 minutes on the clock before Mo Bendadi levelled for the hosts on 65 minutes. Yet, despite new signing Iliass Bel Hassani restoring the visitor’s lead just three minutes later, it was only when Bel Hassani netted his second of the game with four minutes remaining that the Eredivisie outfit put the tie out of their host’s reach – Robert Muhren adding a fourth in the third minute of added time.

Despite being rooted to the foot of the Tweede Divisie table, Koninklijke HFC hit fourth tier visitors, OJC Rosmalen for six – Erolind Derguti, Oscar Wilffert, Jeffrey Sam-Sin, Puck Postma and Tim van Soest (who bagged a brace) were all on target for the hosts whose visitors could only manage a lone Frank van Mosselveld strike in response.

Another side who put their league struggles aside to post a sizable score were PEC Zwolle. Despite languishing at the foot of the Eredivisie standings, Ron Jans’ men hit their fourth tier hosts, DVS ’33 for four – a double from Nicolai Brock-Madsen, a penalty from Bram van Polen and an Anass Achahbar strike ensured that the 2014 cup winners would be in the hat for the second round before Kay Velda netted a consolation for the hosts with a minute to go.

Katwijk ensured that they would also be in the bag for the 2nd round of the competition by seeing off Derde Divisie strugglers Harkemase Boys by two goals to one – the visitors surprising their third tier hosts by taking the lead through Bjorn Adams shortly before the hour before the Tweede Divisie side turned the score line on its head with goals from first, Robbert Susan and then, Mike van den Ban deep into added time to seal progression to the second round of the competition.

The final match on Wednesday saw Peter Bosz ring the changes ahead of Ajax’s second meeting of the season with Willem II – the visitors having remarkably come away from the Amsterdam ArenA with all three points on 20th August .

However, there was to be no repeat of that extraordinary feat by Erwin van de Looi’s side as de Godenzonen hit the men from Tilburg for five without reply – Riechedly Bazoer, debutant, Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech,  and a free kick a-piece from Lasse Schone and Abdelhak Nouri doing the damage for the hosts who also gave a debut to highly touted youngster, Frenkie de Jong – the 19-year-old replacing Bazoer for the final ten minutes of the contest.

Thursday’s cup action began at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede where Erik ten Hag’s Utrecht finally recorded their first victory of the season at the expense of their hosts, FC Twente.

Ajax loanee, Richairo Zivkovic put the visitors ahead in the 17th minute, but the hosts were back on level terms early in the second period – Manchester City loanee, Enes Unal netting with 54 minutes on the clock.

However, ten Hag’s men weren’t to be denied their first win of what has been a torrid start to the season – Sebastien Haller restoring the visitor’s advantage with two minutes left to play before Zivkovic ensured that the 2016 finalists would be in the hat for the second round draw by netting his second of the game and third in two games deep into added time.

Elsewhere, Henk Fraser’s Vitesse Arnhem ran riot at Derde Divisie outfit, De Dijk – hitting the fourth tier side for seven with goals from Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker, Kelvin Leerdam, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Milot Rashica, Arshak Koryan and a double from Adnane Tighadouini. The hosts had briefly made a game of it when Harry Zwarthoed made the score 2-1 four minutes before the half time interval. Yet, by the time Dennis Kaars netted in the 67th minute to make the score 5-2, any chance of an upset was long gone.

Another side to run riot in front of goal on Thursday night was Tweede Divisie side, TEC who put five past Derde Divisie opposition in the form of HSC ’21 – Jos Peltzer, Jip Bartels, Kay Huijgens and a double from Wimilio Vink putting the visitors out of sight before Cenk Uguz responded for the hosts with eleven minutes remaining.

Thursday’s cup action was concluded at De Kuip where Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s unbeaten cup holders began their defence of the trophy at home to Eerste Divisie strugglers, FC Oss – who came into this encounter with the Eredivisie leaders off the back of having recorded just their second win of the season – hitting FC Eindhoven for six just under a week earlier.

Against the odds, it was the underdogs who silenced the previously partisan home support when Tom Boere tapped the ball into an empty net following a collision between visiting forward, Istvan Bakx and Feyenoord ‘keeper, Brad Jones.

However, the hosts were back on level terms just 9 minutes later – Watford loanee, Steven Berghuis beating Oss ‘keeper Ronald Koeman low to his near post with a rasping drive.

Yet, the floodgates failed to open thereafter – Feyenoord finding their lowly visitors in stubborn mood until their impressive resolve was broken in the 68th minute – Michiel Kramer notching his first goal of the season before the hosts put the game out of sight with further goals from Bilal Basacikoglu in the 76th minute and substitute, Nicolai Jorgensen deep into added time to maintain the Rotterdam giants’ 100% start to the season and book their reigning cup holder’s place in the second round of the competition.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Six

Header-EredivisieReport

Advantage Feyenoord in the title race – Steven Davies is on hand to describe all the action from round six of Eredivisie season.

Image result for psv 0-1 feyenoord

The sixth week of play in the Eredivisie got underway at the Stadion Galgenwaard where two of the surprise early season strugglers came face to face as Utrecht – with three points and no wins from their first five games took on Ernest Faber’s struggling Groningen, who themselves entered this Friday evening fixture second off bottom with just two points and similarly without a win in their first five outings of the 2016/17 campaign.

A few months in football can seem like a lifetime – not least for Erik ten Hag, whose exploits last term resulted in an unsuccessful appearance in the final of the KNVB Beker, a fifth place finish and the Rinus Michels Award – an honour which recognises the Coach of the Year in the Netherlands. Yet few could have predicted just how quickly things would unravel for the Utrecht coach.

Despite arriving relatively early in the campaign, both sides understood the importance of collecting three points against an opponent facing a similar plight. Yet, it was the visitors who began the brighter – looking dangerous on the counter attack throughout the match and creating goal scoring opportunities with alarming regularity.

Unsurprisingly, it was Groningen who hit the lead with just 13 minutes on the clock when live wire attacking midfielder, Oussama Idrissi intercepted a misplaced back pass by Ramon Leeuwin and, having found himself one on one with Menno Koch, promptly turned the Utrecht defender inside out before slotting the ball past home ‘keeper, Robbin Ruiter.

Idrissi – easily the best player on the park, was on the scoresheet again as the clock ticked towards the half time break – the 20-year-old’s persistence being rewarded when, following a succession of goal scoring attempts that had been repeatedly blocked by the scrambling Utrecht rear guard, the Dutch starlet glided past three players before bending in an unstoppable drive into the top left hand corner of Ruiter’s net.

Despite Groningen’s dominance, the second stanza began optimistically for the home side and on the hour mark former Groningen player, Richairo Zivkovic found himself in space following a succession of quick fire passes on the edge of the visitor’s area and pulled Erik ten Hag’s men back into a contest that had seemed all but over just prior to the half time interval.

However, just six minutes later the contest was over as former Ajax and Fulham striker, Danny Hoesen latched onto a perfectly weighted ball from star man, Idrissi to break the home side’s offside trap and restore the visitor’s two goal advantage.

Things went from bad to worse as, with the clock winding down, Erik ten Hag’s men threw progressively more and more caution to the wind – substitute, Tom van Weert making it four at the second time of asking after Ruiter had fumbled the former Excelsior forward’s initial near post effort with ten minutes remaining before Hoesen added a fifth in stoppage time to give Ernest Faber’s men their first win of the campaign at the sixth time of asking.

Meanwhile, for Ten Hag and Utrecht, the wait for a first win of the season goes on.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action got underway at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede where FC Twente surprised their visitors from The Hague early on with Manchester City loanee, Enes Unal giving Rene Hake’s men a 13th minute lead with a spectacular free kick from well outside the area which the Turkish striker then doubled with a neat headed finish ten minutes before half time.

Few gave Rene Hake’s side a prayer following a tumultuous summer that had seen the club demoted, seriously consider plying their trade in the lower reaches of German football and very nearly cease to exist before a successful appeal against their demotion allowed them to begin the 2016/17 campaign as an Eredivisie outfit after all. Add to that the recent departure of talismanic playmaker, Hakim Ziyech to Ajax and the odds seemed to be well and truly stacked against the Enschede outfit.

Yet, despite starting the season with two straight defeats, Twente have hit their stride – coming into this meeting with ADO Den Haag with two wins from their last three games thanks in no small part to a profitable relationship with the blue half of Manchester – Kosovar forward, Bersant Celina following fellow Manchester City loanee, Unal onto the scoresheet on 54 minutes with his second goal in as many games.

A diving header from Kevin Jansen briefly reduced the arrears with two minutes remaining for the visitors who, having initially won their first three games of the season, are now without a win in their last three and a tough evening for Zeljko Petrovic’s men was concluded when South African midfielder, Kamohelo Mokotjo put the icing on a convincing victory for Twente with the host’s fourth of the evening in the final minute – tucking in the rebound after substitute, Jari Oosterwijk’s shot had rattled the post.

Next, the action shifted to the GelreDome in Arnhem where Henk Fraser’s, Vitesse played host to a Go Ahead Eagles side buoyed by the confidence of having recorded their first win of the season at the expense of Roda the previous week.

Following a goalless first period largely dominated by the hosts, the visitor’s impressive rear guard action was undone by a lack of pace when Moroccan substitute, Adnane Tighadouini showed right back, Lars Lambooij a clean pair of heels down the left before sending in a would-be cross that referee, Jochem Kamphuis harshly adjudged to have been handled by centre half, Sander Fischer and awarded a penalty – Ricky van Wolfswinkel making no mistake from the spot.

Any thoughts of an Eagles comeback were dashed just three minutes later when another substitute – Mitchell van Bergen, got free down the right and squared for Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker who made sure of the points by driving the ball into the top left hand corner of Theo Zwarthoed’s net from just inside the area.

At the same time, Jurgen Streppel’s Heerenveen came out on top in a bad tempered affair at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion where hosts, Roda JC saw red twice while their visitors were also reduced to ten men.

When Swede, Sam Larsson fired the visitors into an eighth minute lead with a spectacular free kick from well outside the area there was little indication of the farcical scenes that were to ensue later in the half when first, Nigerian midfielder, Abdul Ajagun was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence just five minutes after receiving his first caution by referee, Bas Nijhuis before, just nine minutes later, Chris Kum received his second booking of the match leaving the home side down to nine men and the Roda faithful irate at Nijhuis and his assistants as they left the field.

With a two-man advantage as well as being a goal to the good, it came as little surprise when Jurgen Streppel’s men made their advantage tell – Henk Veerman doubling the visitors lead from close range on 68 minutes.

However, the drama wasn’t quite over, and when Manchester City loanee, Shay Facey picked up his second booking of the match with fifteen minutes remaining the visitors were reduced to ten men.

Yet the hosts never really looked like turning the game into a contest after having been reduced to nine men at the end of the first half and, when Arber Zeneli made it three in the 77th minute with his second goal of the season, any chances of an unlikely comeback were well and truly extinguished.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action was rounded off at the Koning Willem II Stadion in Tilburg where Willem II – winless in their last three matches, played host to Excelsior.

The hosts hit the front after only 6 minutes through a back post header from Spanish forward, Fran Sol but his strike wasn’t enough to secure all three points for Erwin van de Looi’s side – 24-year-old Moroccan, Hicham Faik earning Mitchell van der Gaag’s visitor’s a share of the spoils from a deflected free kick that deceived Willem II ‘keeper Kostas Lamprou with ten minutes remaining.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began at Het Kasteel in Rotterdam where Sparta played host to NEC Nijmegen.

Alex Pastoor’s men have quickly acclimatised to life back in the Eredivisie following promotion last term and the home side were ahead on 17 minutes through a well-placed half volley from Thomas Verhaar.

Peter Hyballa’s visitors came into this contest on the back of two straight defeats and were looking to rediscover the early season form that saw the men from Nijmegen begin the campaign with a run of three games without defeat.

Despite losing an early goal, Hyballa’s men remained in the contest for the majority of the match until Ajax loanee, Zakaria El Azzouzi doubled the home side’s advantage from close range with 9 minutes remaining to send the newly promoted side into the UEFA Europa League playoff places.

There was little doubt as to the match of the weekend as unbeaten table toppers, Feyenoord – fresh from their stunning UEFA Europa League success over Manchester United on Thursday, put their 100% record on the line against reigning champions, PSV Eindhoven.

Despite coming into this top of the table encounter trailing their visitors by two points, Phillip Cocu’s men had the benefit of an additional two days rest following their UEFA Champions League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening and had beaten Feyenoord in the most recent meeting between the two sides – PSV lifting the Johan Cruijff Schaal at the expense of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side on July 31st.

Predictably, given their respective mid-week exertions, it was the hosts who enjoyed the lion’s share in terms of both possession and chances in a goalless first half – Luciano Narsingh in particular, being denied a trio of guilt-edged opportunities thanks to a combination of a resolute Feyenoord rear guard and the reflexes of Australian ‘keeper, Brad Jones.

Yet the second period proved to be more of an even contest as the visitors began to show their teeth – Tonny Vilhena – the hero of Thursday night’s victory over Manchester United being denied a penalty just after the hour mark when it appeared his goal-bound effort was handled by a diving Nicolas Isimat-Mirin. However, much to the consternation of visiting coach, van Bronckhorst, the visitor’s appeals were waved away by referee, Kevin Blom.

Nevertheless, the league leaders weren’t to be denied and when another of the stars of Feyenoord’s mid-week European heroics, Eric Botteghin saw the ball land at his feet from an 82nd minute corner just outside the PSV box, the Brazilian centre half smashed the ball past Dutch international, Jeroen Zoet to put the visitors into the ascendancy.

Feyenoord’s Australian stopper, Brad Jones has been in excellent form since his summer arrival at De Kuip and, following a string of good saves throughout the contest, was again on hand – this time to deny a goal-bound header from Hector Moreno in the dying seconds to seal all three points for the men from Rotterdam and, in the process, a five point lead over their hosts in the Eredivisie standings.

As the final whistle sounded the jubilation was clear to see on the faces of everyone associated with the long suffering Rotterdam giants whose attention now turns to the defence of their KNVB Beker title when the cup holders entertain second tier outfit, FC Oss in the 1st round on Thursday evening.

At the same time, bottom placed PEC Zwolle welcomed AZ Alkmaar to the MAC3PARK Stadion with Ron Jans’ struggling side hopeful of recording their first win of the season against an AZ team who could only draw at home to Irish minnows, Dundalk in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

However, despite their poor showing in Europe, John van den Brom’s side came into this fixture on the back of three straight league wins and hit the front shortly before half time through Wout Weghorst’s close range finish. But the visitors only made sure of all three points with three minutes remaining – 18-year-old substitute, Guus Til adding the second of the afternoon for the men from Alkmaar.

The sixth round of matches came to a conclusion at the Polman Stadion in Almelo where Ajax, fresh from an, at times, unlikely away success at Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, took on Heracles.

The hosts came into the game with no wins in their last three matches and without a home win over their visitors from Amsterdam for more than half a century. By sharp contrast, Peter Bosz and his men arrived in Almelo on the back of three straight wins in all competitions – the former Heracles boss naming an unchanged side from the one that triumphed in Greece on his return to Almelo.

Following a goalless first period, it was the visitors who, having started slowly, gradually wrestled control of the game away from the hosts before the Heracles defence misjudged a Mitchell Dijks cross from the left, allowing the ball to bounce invitingly into the path of Davy Klaassen – the Ajax skipper rolling the ball past Heracles ‘keeper, Bram Castro to put the away side a goal to the good in the 66th minute with his fifth league goal in six games.

Any thoughts of a comeback by John Stegeman’s side were dispelled with fourteen minutes remaining when Nemanja Gudelj latched onto a through ball from goal scorer, Klaassen before curling the ball into the bottom left hand corner of Castro’s net to score his second league goal of the season and ensure that all three points were heading back to Amsterdam.

Man Utd sink as Vilhena vindicates Feyenoord to victory

A shock win for Gio van Bronckhorst’s Feyenoord over Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United on Thursday night gave the Rotterdammers the perfect start to this season’s European adventure reports Steven Davies.

THURSDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2016

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE – GROUP STAGE

FEYENOORD 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

A single strike from Feyenoord playmaker, Tonny Vilhena saw the Rotterdam giants record a memorable victory over a poor Manchester United side in Group A of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

Despite the fact that, due to previous issues regarding crowd trouble during their last UEFA Europa League campaign and in particular over the two legged knock-out tie with Roma in February 2015, Feyenoord were forced to reduce the capacity of their imposing home, employ considerably more stewards and erect a 10 metre high catch net around the playing surface, little could dampen the raucous atmosphere generated for the visit of one of the world’s biggest clubs to Rotterdam – evoking memories of Feyenoord’s glorious past when the continent’s biggest and best were annual visitors to De Kuip.

Despite their illustrious history, the UEFA Europa League (or the UEFA Cup as it was previously known) is one trophy Manchester United have never won – something their hosts have on two occasions, with their most recent triumph in the competition coming under Bert van Marwijk in 2002.

Yet, any thought of winning the competition for Jose Mourinho’s men was most definitely put on the back burner – the Manchester United coach opting to rest a slew of first choice players for the game in Rotterdam, having previously stated an intention of operating two separate teams in an effort to balance the rigors of domestic and continental competition during the first half of the campaign.

Being able to rotate a squad and yet field a side that included names such as Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford was a luxury that Feyenoord coach, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst couldn’t afford – the home side fielding ten of the eleven that dispatched ADO Den Haag at the weekend to maintain Feyenoord’s 100% start to the Eredivisie season as Terence Kongolo returned at the expense of Lucas Woudenberg.

By contrast, the visitors came into the tie off the back of a disappointing home defeat at the hands of their cross-city rivals and had a point to prove to their new manager – who won the competition as coach of Porto in 2003.

But it was the home side who came out of the blocks first – Steven Berghuis testing the handling of United ‘keeper, David de Gea from the edge of the area in the 11th minute before Tonny Vilhena attempted a speculator from similar range on the quarter hour. The visitors replied by troubling de Gea’s opposite number, Brad Jones with a tame Paul Pogba free kick a minute later.

Despite mounting pressure from the hosts, it was the visitors who carved out the best chance of the half when Matteo Darmian broke free down the left and squared for Anthony Martial who skewed a right footed effort from the edge of the area inches wide of Jones’ left hand post with 24 minutes on the clock.

A game of cat and mouse ensued as the second half began – both sides exchanging long range efforts that only served to trouble the ten foot high catch nets encircling the playing surface..

Any suggestion that Mourinho was content with the situation was dispelled when the United boss made a triple change just after the hour – introducing Ibrahimovic, Memphis and Young in the hope of taking all three points back to Manchester.

However, it was a Feyenoord substitute that would fashion the first effort to pose any real danger in the second stanza – Bilal Basacikoglu getting free down the right and firing a low drive that had de Gea scurrying to cover his left hand post with 73 minutes gone.

Having replaced Watford loanee, Steven Berghuis – who had lost the early spark that had driven the home side forward during the first period – the 21-year-old took it upon himself to reignite a contest whose embers had previously begun to flicker and fade.

With eleven minutes remaining, Basacikoglu again found time and space down the right and played in Nicolai Jorgensen who broke the United offside trap and squared for Vilhena who side-footed the ball past de Gea from just inside the area to give the Rotterdam giants a lead their first half play had merited.

Rocked by the goal, the visitors continued to huff and puff thereafter but their star-studded line up ultimately fashioned little to trouble Feyenoord’s Australian stopper, Jones – an Ibrahimovic free kick from just outside the area which was well held by the Feyenoord glovesman as the game entered added time being the best the men from Manchester could muster as Feyenoord added another chapter to their illustrious history in European club competition while in the process maintaining their 100% start to the season with a top of the table clash with PSV in Eindhoven next up for the league leaders on Sunday afternoon.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Five

Header-EredivisieReport

Week five is in the books and Steven Davies is on hand with a description of the action in this weekend’s Eredivisie.

Following the international break, the Eredivisie returned for the fifth week of play and with no Friday fixture thanks to the aforementioned international commitments of many of the league’s top players, the action instead began on Saturday evening at the AFAS Stadion where sixth place, AZ welcomed a resurgent Willem II to Alkmaar.

Things have been looking up of late for the men from Tilburg – Erwin van de Looi’s men having taken four points from a possible six to arrest what had previously been a wretched start to the campaign. However, despite having one eye on their UEFA Europa League meeting with Irish minnows, Dundalk on Thursday, the hosts easily dispatched their visitors – Iranian international, Alireza Jahanbakhsh opening the scoring on 19 minutes with a thunderous half volley from the edge of the area before Levi Garcia capitalised on an errant pass out of the visitor’s defence to seal all three points in the 91st.

Simultaneously, two of this season’s surprising underachievers came head to head at MAC3PARK Stadion where Ron Jans, PEC Zwolle – with just one point from a possible twelve, met Erik ten Hag’s, FC Utrecht – who themselves were just one point better off coming into this encounter.

Despite having lost their last three games – shipping in eight goals and scoring none in the process, it was the hosts who struck first – Kingsley Ehizibue putting Zwolle ahead with 12 minutes on the clock following a goalmouth scramble.

With the transfer window now closed until January, one of the most remarkable stories appears to be the fact that a transfer once again failed to materialise for Utrecht’s talismanic French striker, Sebastien Haller and the inspirational marksman was on hand once more to salvage a point for the visitors – converting a penalty in the 91st minute following the dismissal of Feyenoord loanee, Calvin Verdonk who saw red for the hosts after bringing down Giovanni Troupee in the box.

Image result for nec 0-4 psv

Reigning title holders, PSV Eindhoven prepared up for their upcoming UEFA Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid by hitting NEC Nijmegen for four at the Goffertstadion – strikes from Bart Ramselaar and Gaston Pereiro saw the visitors two goals up with ten minutes gone before a perfectly placed header from full back, Joshua Brenet and a simple finish for Luuk de Jong after Davy Propper had put the Dutch international in the clear, ended the game as a meaningful contest with just 24 minutes on the clock.

Despite having made a remarkable start to the season – recording two wins from their opening two matches, Mitchell van der Gaag’s, Excelsior came into Saturday night’s encounter with Heracles off the back of two straight defeats and wasted little time dismantling John Stegeman’s visitors at the Stadion Woudestein – Khalid Karami putting the home side ahead with less than a minute on the clock. The visitors were still reeling when Excelsior skipper, Ryan Koolwijk smashed in a cracker from just outside the area to double the home side’s advantage with 19 minutes gone before Fredy Ribeiro cut in from the right and curled in a third from the edge of the area to effectively end the game as any sort of contest with just 22 minutes having elapsed. Vincent Vermeij pulled one back for the visitors on 66 minutes with a close range tap in but his strike failed to galvanise the Almelo outfit who slumped to their second defeat in three matches.

FC Twente began the post-Hakim Ziyech era with defeat in Friesland – going down by three goals to one at the hands of Jurgen Streppel’s, Heerenveen.

Iranian international, Reza Ghoochannejhad opened the scoring for the home side just after the half hour mark with a powerful header before Swede, Sam Larsson doubled the host’s advantage with 66 minutes on the clock with a neat side-footed finish from the edge of the area. The score line was perhaps a little harsh on Rene Hake’s men who had threatened Erwin Mulder’s goal on numerous occasions and the visitors eventually found their way back into the game through a strike from Manchester City loanee, Bersant Celina with twelve minutes to go.

However, the dismissal of Hidde ter Avest – who saw red from referee, Jochem Kamphuis after receiving his second yellow card of the match in the 90th minute for a reckless two footed lunge, dispelled any hopes the men from Enschede had of taking anything from their visit to the Abe Lenstra Stadion and Ghoochannejhad sealed all three points for the hosts in the second minute of added time with his third goal of the season.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began with an intriguing contest at De Kuip where two unbeaten sides came face to face. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s, Feyenoord came into the fifth round of matches off the back of four straight victories and with one eye on a mouth-watering UEFA Europa League encounter with Manchester United on Thursday, while Zeljko Petrovic’s, ADO Den Haag arrived in Rotterdam with an unbeaten record of their own to defend.

Having squandered a slew of chances to open the scoring the home side finally made the break through just after the half hour mark as Feyenoord landed a swift one-two punch that left their visitors from The Hague reeling – Dirk Kuyt opening the scoring on 33 minutes at the second time of asking after ADO ‘keeper, Ernestas Setkus had denied his initial effort before a neat through ball from Jens Toornstra found Danish marksman, Nicolai Jorgensen who beat the visitor’s offside trap to double the Rotterdam giant’s advantage just a minute later with his third goal of the season.

Substitute, Ludcinio Marengo did briefly bring the visitors back into the game with four minutes remaining – volleying the ball past Feyenoord glovesman, Brad Jones after the Australian stopper had denied his initial header from point blank range, but any thoughts ADO’s travelling band of supporters may have harboured of their side stealing a point were quickly dashed when Karim El Ahmadi added a third in the third minute of stoppage time to put van Bronckhorst’s side two points clear atop the Eredivisie standings to leave things perfectly poised ahead of a top of the table clash with PSV in Eindhoven next Sunday.

Despite having collected their first point of the season at the fourth time of asking just prior to the international break, Groningen welcomed newly promoted Sparta Rotterdam to the Noordlease Stadion propping up the table and Ernest Faber’s men set about this crunch game with an air of purpose early on – Mimoun Mahi giving the hosts the lead with just 12 minutes on the clock.

However, Alex Pastoor’s side have been somewhat of a surprise package this season and came into this game five points better off than their more illustrious hosts, favouring an open and attacking brand of football that has won many plaudits since their return to the top table of Dutch football and, given the unease both on and off the field for all associated with Groningen, it was little surprise when the visitors drew level through Ajax loanee, Zakaria El Azzouzi – who finished a swift Sparta counter attack just eight minutes later to leave honours even.

While the draw lifts Groningen off the bottom of the table at the expense of PEC Zwolle on goal difference, it does little to alleviate the mounting pressure on the shoulders of Groningen’s under-fire coach, Ernest Faber whose side now face a crucial trip to another club in search of their first victory of the season – FC Utrecht, on Friday.

At the same time, a club in a similar plight – newly promoted Go Ahead Eagles, welcomed Roda JC to De Adelaarshorst in search of their first win since returning to the Dutch top flight at the fifth time of asking.

The home side enjoyed a busy week of transfer activity prior to the international break – the most significant addition being the return of Jarchinio Antonia who made his re-debut for the Eagles after having his contract at Groningen terminated.

Despite having been competitive in each of their four Eredivisie matches thus far, a lack of pace at the back and killer instinct in front of goal have cost Hans de Koning’s side time and time again and both of these shortcomings were once again in evidence on Sunday afternoon, but when Welshman, Simon Church was adjudged to have handled a goal-bound header from Sander Duits following a Marcel Ritzmaier cross from the right, the home side must have felt like history was repeating itself when referee, Ed Janssen pointed to the spot. Yet, following his high profile miss from the spot against Ajax prior to the international break, last season’s goal machine, Leon de Kogel – who hit the back of the net on 27 occasions last season but has yet to do so at Eredivisie level for the Eagles, stepped aside allowing Kevin Brands to send Roda ‘keeper, Benjamin van Leer the wrong way and put the home side one nil up.

The game was played in an open manner and chances came and went at both ends of the field until substitute, Darren Maatsen, killed a length of the field clearance by home ‘keeper, Theo Zwarthoed stone dead at the edge of the Roda area before flashing the ball past a flailing van Leer to secure the home side’s first win since their return to the Eredvisie.

The fifth round of Eredivisie action was concluded at the Amsterdam ArenA where Ajax, who came into their encounter with Vitesse Arnhem without a home victory in 2016/17, gave a debut to big money signing, Hakim Ziyech in the hope of kick-starting their title challenge following an unconvincing opening to the Peter Bosz era in Amsterdam.

The hosts, who will make the long trip to Greece for a UEFA Europa League encounter with Panathinaikos on Thursday, began the game brightly – peppering Eloy Room’s goal with attempts that had the Vitesse ‘keeper at full stretch on a number of occasions.

But it wasn’t until the 55th minute that the deadlock was broken. Having been awarded a free kick on the left following a foul on skipper, Davy Klaassen, Moroccan international, Ziyech promptly flashed a tantalising ball across the face of goal for a diving Nick Viergever to head past Eloy Room from close range and give de Godenzonen what, in the end, proved to be the only goal of the game and any hopes that Henk Fraser’s side had of taking something from a contest in which they had enjoyed their fair share of opportunities were effectively extinguished when Arnold Kruiswijk received his marching orders after collecting his second yellow card of the match in the 67th minute following a reckless challenge on Joel Veltman.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Four

Header-EredivisieReport

In a weekend where PSV suffered a slight setback and Ajax bounced back, Steven Davies is on hand to describe all the action from round four of Eredivisie season.

Image result for sebastien haller

This weekend got underway on Friday night at the GelreDome in Arnhem where two sides with contrasting starts to the season went head to head.

Last season’s recipient of the Rinus Michels Award – an honour which recognises the Coach of the Year in the Netherlands – Erik ten Hag, has seen his Utrecht side emulate the sort of performances that landed him the prestigious award during the opening three weeks of the season but lack the points haul to go with them – having only posted a single point from a possible nine thus far.

By sharp contrast, new Vitesse coach, Henk Fraser’s side have hit the ground running in 2016/17 – recording six points from a possible nine and it came as little surprise when the Arnhem based outfit hit the front shortly before the half hour mark through Ricky van Wolfswinkel – the 27-year-old finding an abundance of time and space inside the Utrecht box to latch onto a square ball from Milot Rashica and notch his third goal in four games since returning to the club where his career began.

Having been second best for the majority of the first period, the Utrecht players began the second stanza on the front foot and found a way back into the contest on 68 minutes when a shot from just outside the area was parried by Vitesse stopper, Eloi Room only for the ball to fall perfectly for Giovanni Troupee whose lofted cross across the face of the home side’s goal was met by the head of Utrecht’s talismanic forward, Sebastien Haller – the Frenchman making no mistake from close range to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.

Saturday’s Eredivisie action began in Tilburg with a stalemate at the Koning Willem II Stadion where Erwin van de Looi’s, Willem II arrived at their meeting with draw specialists Roda JC off the back of a famous away win at the Amsterdam ArenA  but failed to repeat the feat in front of their own fans.

Image result for sam larsson

A lone strike by Swede, Sam Larsson was enough to secure all three points for Heerenveen against struggling PEC Zwolle at the Abe Lenstra Stadion and in the process record the first victory of the Jurgen Streppel era in Friesland.

Meanwhile, things continue to look grim for Ron Jans and his men, who not only fell to their third straight defeat of the season but also to the bottom of the Eredivisie standings.

Image result for feyenoord excelsior

By sharp contrast, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s, Feyenoord entered Saturday evening’s Rotterdam derby with Excelsior with a perfect nine points from nine from the opening three weeks of the season, sparking hopes of a first Eredvisie crown since Leo Beenhakker guided the Rotterdam giants to the league title in 1999.

Yet, in the intervening years since that success, Feyenoord have tended to falter when the business end of the season rolls around so there will have been more than a few supporters who will not have been surprised when, against the run of play, Stanley Elbers latched on to a square ball from Nigel Hasselbaink to slot past Aussie ‘keeper, Brad Jones and put Mitchell van der Gaag’s men one nil up and silence the majority of the 47,000 crowd at De Kuip with 26 minutes on the clock.

It is fair to say that, at 36 years of age, Feyenoord skipper Dirk Kuyt has enjoyed somewhat of an Indian summer in terms of goal scoring since his return to De Kuip at the beginning of last season. Kuyt, who netted an impressive 23 times in his first season back in Rotterdam, was instrumental in steadying the ship when the team, having started 2015/16 promisingly, hit choppy waters around the turn of the year and embarked on a wretched run of defeats which derailed the club’s early season title ambitions by the end of January but didn’t see the club finish the season without silverware – having collected the KNVB Beker with a win over FC Utrecht in April and the former Dutch international was on hand once again when, after latching onto a flick by Danish target man, Nicolai Jorgensen, Kuyt unleashed a sweet half volley to drag Feyenoord back on level terms just before the half time interval.

Then, Just before the hour mark, Kuyt was at it again – this time killing a long diagonal pass from sub, Jan-Arie van der Heijden stone dead on his chest at the top of the Excelsior box before stroking the ball past Tom Muyters to put the hosts into the ascendancy .

Two minutes later, Steven Berghuis made it three when, after receiving the ball just inside the Excelsior area from Karim El Ahmadi, the Watford loanee curled a well-placed finish into the top right hand corner of Muyter’s net.

The hosts rounded out what, in the end, was a comfortable victory when Jens Toornstra intercepted a poorly weighted back pass before rounding the ‘keeper to make it four with 65 minutes on the clock – securing the home side’s fourth straight win of the season and their place at the summit of the Eredivisie standings.

Image result for twente sparta rotterdam

The late kick off came at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede where Rene Hake’s Twente, having been written off by many just a couple of weeks ago after staving off both bankruptcy and demotion over the summer months, recorded their second victory in as many games – dispatching newly promoted Sparta Rotterdam 3-1.

It what could well be his final game in front of the Enschede faithful, talismanic playmaker, Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring for the home side just before the quarter hour before Yaw Yeboah doubled the home side’s advantage with a spectacular strike from just outside the area on 36 minutes.

Yet the visitors from Rotterdam came into this game on a run of two successive victories and Alex Pastoor’s men rattled the fragile confidence of the home side when Twente glovesman, Nick Marsman brought down Aussie, Craig Goodwin resulting in referee, Reinold Wiedemeijer pointing to the spot from which Belgian marksman, Loris Brogno made no mistake – netting his fourth goal in as many games.

However, the final word fittingly went to Ziyech who, having turned in a man of the match display, sealed the home side’s second win in as many weeks just before the hour mark when, having intercepted a wayward pass out of the Sparta defence, the in-demand Moroccan international, nipped behind the visitor’s backline and slotted the ball past Roy Kortsmit before later departing to a hero’s reception from the adoring home crowd when he was replaced by Tim Holscher in the first minute of stoppage time.

Image result for psv groningen

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven where reigning champions, PSV were surprisingly held to a goalless draw by Ernest Faber’s struggling Groningen who arrived in Eindhoven without a point to their name. The result ensured that Feyenoord would sit two points clear at the top of the Eredivisie standings after the fourth weekend of action and was made all the more remarkable given the fact that the visitors were forced to play with ten men for a vast portion of the match after 19-year-old defensive midfielder, Juninho Bacuna was sent off for his second bookable offence with 32 minutes on the clock. The best opportunity in an extremely one-sided affair came when the hosts received a penalty after Luciano Narsingh was brought down in the Groningen area shortly before the half time break. However, the normally reliable Luuk de Jong saw his spot kick saved by Groningen glovesman, Sergio Padt.

Image result for ado heracles

Like PSV, Zeljko Petrovic’s surprise package, ADO Den Haag came into their meeting with Heracles having collected three wins from the opening three matches of the season. Yet they would be denied a fourth successive victory by John Stegeman’s side who took the lead at the Kyocera Stadion through German defender, Robin Gosens with 18 minutes on the clock – thanks in no small part to the poor handling of ADO ‘keeper, Ernestas Setkus.

In season’s gone by this was the sort of result that ADO have been prone to let slip entirely, yet their encouraging start to the 2016/17 campaign has seen newfound resilience and belief take root on both the pitch and in the stands and, while they could not make it four wins from four outings, the home side did manage to level the score when,  shortly before the half hour mark, Japanese international striker, Mike Havenaar buried a well taken left footed strike on the run after latching onto a Gervane Kastaneer flick on.

Image result for davy klaassen

All eyes turned to De Adelaarshorst on Sunday lunchtime where under fire Peter Bosz brought his struggling Ajax side to face newly promoted, Go Ahead Eagles.

After enduring a tumultuous week that began with a defeat at home to Willem II followed by a humiliating exit from the final qualifying phase of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Russian under dogs, FC Rostov, many saw the trip to Deventer as another potential banana skin for de Godenzonen who, having seen Dutch interntional ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen depart for Barcelona handed Cameroonian, Andre Onana only his second taste of first team action – the 20-yearold stopper’s inclusion being one of numerous changes to a backline that had been torn to shreds in midweek.

In front of a vociferous home crowd, Hans de Koning’s Eagles began on the front foot and with twenty minutes on the clock Columbian defender, Davinson Sanchez appeared to clip the heels of PSV loanee, Marcel Ritzmaier as the Austrian midfielder scampered into the Ajax area leaving referee, Pol van Boekel little option but to point to the spot.

Like his team mates, last season’s goal machine, Leon de Kogel has struggled to repeat the sort of prowess in front of goal that saw the 24-year-old marksman bag 27 goals as he fired the Eagles to promotion via the promotion/ relegation playoffs last term and the striker’s lack of confidence was in evidence here as he saw his spot kick saved by Onana – an event that ultimately proved to be the turning point of the game.

Having seemingly got out of jail thanks to Onana’s heroics, the visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck – Ajax’s inspirational skipper, Davy Klaassen giving Peter Bosz’s side the lead when his shot from just outside the area took a nick off the heels of Sander Fischer to deceive Theo Zwarthoed in the home net just minutes later.

Chelsea loanee, Bertrand Traore was one of the only players in an Ajax shirt to emerge from the midweek trip to Russia with a performance to be proud of and the mercurial Burkina Faso international gave left back, Kenny Teijsse a torrid time throughout the contest – his trickery winning the visitors a penalty from which Klaassen made no mistake to double de Godenzonen’s advantage heading into the half time interval.

The game was effectively over just after the hour mark when Nemanja Gudelj floated a perfectly placed free kick over the home side’s wall to leave Zwarthoed once more rooted to the spot and, in the process, earn Peter Bosz a stay of execution heading into the international break.

Image result for az 2-0 nec

The fourth round of Eredivisie action was concluded at the AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar where AZ dispatched ten-man NEC Nijmegen by two goals to nil. John van den Brom’s side took the lead just before the half time interval through a diving header by 20-year-old attacking midfielder, Dabney dos Santos and things went from bad to worse for Peter Hyballa’s men when German midfielder, Julian von Haacke received a second yellow card from referee, Kevin Blom with more than half an hour still to play before Iranian international, Alireza Jahanbakhsh put the undermanned visitors out of their misery following a swift AZ counter attack with 17 minutes remaining.

Pressure on Bosz as Ajax fall in Russia

Four-time European Cup winners, Ajax failed to advance to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the second year in succession after being humiliated in remarkable fashion by Russian underdogs, FC Rostov reports Steven Davies.

WEDNESDAY 24TH AUGUST 2016

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – QUALIFYING PLAYOFF – SECOND LEG

FC ROSTOV 4-1 AJAX

Following a calamitous home defeat at the hands of Willem II in which most of the Ajax backline was culpable, under fire coach, Peter Bosz shuffled his defence for a second leg that, according to many in the Dutch media, carried with it more than just qualification for the group stages of European club football’s richest prize.

The most surprising selection came between the posts for the visitors where, despite a big money switch to Barcelona being in the offing, Dutch international ‘keeper, Jasper Cillessen returned at the expense of Andre Onana – the 20-year-old stopper having made his first team debut against Willem II on Saturday. Meanwhile, a series of high profile errors in the same game resulted in Columbian centre half, Davinson Sanchez being dropped and Dutch international, Joel Veltman reverting to centre half with both Kenny Tete and Nick Viergever filling the full back roles as the injured Mitchell Dijks was also ruled out.

Having come back from the brink of bankruptcy while also surviving a relegation playoff fifteen months previously to the verge of not only winning the Russian league title last term but now reaching the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, FC Rostov entered the second leg of the tie with the Amsterdam giants holding a slight advantage by virtue of Ecuadorian international, Christian Noboa’s away goal in the 1-1 draw at the Amsterdam ArenA just over a week ago.

A solid defence had been the bedrock of the unfancied Russian outfit’s success under previous coach, Kurban Berdyev and Rostov’s caretaker coach, Dmitri Kirichenko, having continued with his predecessor’s defensive philosophy in Amsterdam, appeared intent on strangling the tie here as well.

Yet, despite their defensive stance it was the Russians who came out of the blocks the quicker with the first clean cut opportunity of the game falling to Aleksandr Erokhin who, having latched onto a through ball, out muscled Jairo Riedewald before being denied by Cillessen – who stayed tall to deny the striker with 9 minutes gone.

Ajax did rouse from their slumber shortly thereafter as Chelsea loanee, Bertrand Traore lifted an effort over the bar from the edge of the six yard box after Nemanja Gudelj had seen his shot charged down with 19 minutes on the clock.

Rostov however, would continue to take it to their illustrious visitors and when Iranian, Sardar Azmoun latched onto a cross from the right with a towering header, Jasper Cillessen was left rooted to the spot as the Russians took the tie by the scruff of the neck going into the half time interval.

Any thought of an Ajax comeback was dashed within minutes of the resumption of play as a free kick from Timofei Kalachev was met by Erokhin who made no mistake with a close range header that put the Russians 2-0 up on the night and 3-1 up on aggregate after 52 minutes.

But, if Peter Bosz entered the game under pressure, what followed would have set alarm bells ringing at De Toekomst.

Eight minutes later, a game of ping pong in the Ajax area eventually saw the ball land at the feet of Ecuadorian, Noboa who – having opened the scoring in the tie just over a week ago in Amsterdam – stabbed the ball past a helpless Cillessen from close range to effectively seal the tie with half an hour remaining.

But a humiliating night was to get even worse for the former European powerhouse, when, six minutes later, an Ajax attack broke down and turned into a swift Rostov counter attack with Erokhin beating a number of Ajax players before putting in Dmitriy Poloz who beat the Ajax offside trap before calmly rounding Cillessen to make it 4-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.

Ajax offered little by way of resistance throughout the contest – often being caught in possession and creating few real goal scoring opportunities.

Having drug his side through recent indifferent performances, Ajax skipper, Davy Klaassen was as anonymous as the rest of his team mates on a miserable night for de Godenzonen but did manage to get the Dutch side on the scoresheet from the penalty spot after substitute, Kasper Dolberg was brought down in the Rostov area by Fyodor Kudryashov – who was then shown the red card with seven minutes remaining.

However, it proved little more than a consolation for Peter Bosz whose position as Ajax coach is becoming increasingly untenable as the four time European Cup winners – already playing catch up in the Eredivisie standings – were embarrassingly dumped out of qualifying for European club football’s richest prize for a second year in succession.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Week Three

Header-EredivisieReport

Week three of the Eredivisie is in the books and Steven Davies reports on all the action.

This weekend’s games got underway got underway on Friday evening at the Stadion Woudestein in Rotterdam where two of the unlikeliest of early season pacesetters put their respective 100% records on the line.

New Excelsior coach, Mitchell van der Gaag has worked minor miracles at the tiny Rotterdam outfit since his arrival from FC Eindhoven and the early signs were that his new club’s incredible start to 2016/17 would continue – central defender, Jurgen Mattheij firing the home side ahead with a bullet header – the 23-year-old’s second in as many weeks – from a Ryan Koolwijk corner with just eight minutes on the clock in an encounter in which the home side enjoyed the lion’s share in terms of both possession and scoring opportunities.

However, like Mitchell van der Gaag, new ADO Den Haag coach, Zeljko Petrovic deserves great credit for the way in which he has transformed a side that, having stuttered to an uninspired mid-table finish in 2015/16, ended Friday evening sitting atop the fledgling Eredivisie table – a 25th minute strike by Gervane Kastaneer – his third in as many games – followed by a diving header from towering centre half, Tom Beugelsdijk with just over twenty minutes to play preserving the 100% record of the men from The Hague.

Saturday’s action began in Kerkrade where Vitesse Arnhem took all three points thanks to a solitary strike from Chelsea loanee, Lewis Baker in the 22nd minute – the England under 21 international inflicting a first defeat on new Roda coach, Yannis Anastasiou.

The shock result of the weekend occurred at the Amsterdam ArenA, where pointless Willem II pulled off a remarkable victory by two goals to one – coming from behind after a header from Ajax’s inspirational skipper, Davy Klaassen had initially put the home side one up with the match less than a minute old.

Coming into the encounter pressure had been mounting on new Willem II coach, Erwin van de Looi after heavy defeats to both Vitesse and Heracles had opened his reign in Tilburg in inauspicious fashion. However, it was his opposite number, Ajax coach, Peter Bosz – with one eye on de Godenzonen’s important trip to Rostov-on-Don in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff tie on Wednesday evening – who was left feeling the heat after a thunderous goal from Erik Falkenburg on 28 minutes followed by a smart turn and strike by Spanish marksman, Fran Sol just three minutes later turned the score line on its head.

Both goals highlighted frailties in the Ajax defence – a loose pass from Colombian centre half, Davinson Sanchez on halfway gifted possession back to the visitors who broke quickly through Brazilian, Bruno Andrade whose square ball from the right found an unmarked Falkenburg who made no mistake – rattling in his second goal in three matches. Then, just minutes later, Thom Haye turned Dutch international, Joel Veltman inside out before finding an unmarked Sol in the box with time and space aplenty to hammer the Tillburgers second past debutant goalkeeper, Andre Onana – who was included in the starting line-up as Jasper Cillessen’s big money switch to Barcelona nears completion.

Things go from bad to worse for Ron Jans as he watched his PEC Zwolle side get torn apart by a ruthless PSV Eindhoven at the MAC3PARK Stadion just a week after the home side were incredibly hit for three without reply by newly promoted Sparta.

Phillip Cocu’s defending Eredivisie champions wasted little time in putting their hosts to the sword – Frenchman, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin setting the back-to-back title winners on their way to the top of the table after 22 minutes with a close range header before Jorrit Hendrix doubled the visitors advantage with ten minutes to go before the interval with a rasping drive from just outside the area.

Zwolle never really looked like making the game a contest at any point in the second stanza and a late header from Luuk de Jong followed by a first Eredivisie goal for 18-year-old, Steven Bergwijn sealed a comprehensive away day victory for the side from Eindhoven.

Rounding out Saturday’s action, Peter Hyballa’s NEC secured their first win of the season at the expense of Jurgen Streppel’s Heerenveen. Centre half, Dario Dumic opened the scoring for the hosts just after the half hour mark before Pelle van Amersfoort levelled for the visitors from Friesland ten minutes before the half time break. This battle of the early season draw specialists seemed destined to end in similar fashion until Reagy Ofosu turned Lucas Bijker inside out, cut in from the right and smashed a low drive past an exposed Erwin Mulder in the Heerenveen net to secure the first win of the Peter Hyballa era in Nijmegen.

Sunday’s Eredivisie action began in Groningen where things continue to look bleak for Ernest Faber’s men after an injury time strike by Jari Oosterwijk clinched a remarkable 4-3 victory for Rene Hake’s beleaguered, FC Twente.

A 39 minute hat trick by Manchester City loanee, Enes Unal saw the men from Enschede race out to a 3-0 lead going into the half time break before a remarkable comeback by the home side through strikes by Mimoun Mahi, Oussama Idrissi and a well-placed free kick by former Fulham and Ajax striker, Danny Hoesen levelled the score line with six minutes left to play.

Yet, with the home side riding a wave of momentum it was the visitors who found a last gasp winner when substitute, Fredrik Jensen broke into the Groningen area before squaring the ball for fellow replacement, Oosterwijk who rolled the ball into an empty net to secure the Enschede outfit’s first points of the season at the third time of asking.

There was a battle of the Eredivisie new boys at Het Kasteel where reigning Eerste Divisie champions, Sparta Rotterdam entertained Go Ahead Eagles – who themselves secured promotion via the promotion/relegation playoffs at the end of last season.

Having masterminded an incredible 14 match unbeaten run that culminated in promotion following his appointment in February 2016, Han de Koning and his Eagles have found life back in the Eredivisie more of a challenge than that of his opposite number Alex Pastoor, whose Sparta side came into this game off the back of a remarkable 3-0 away win over PEC Zwolle.

Yet there was little to choose between the sides for the majority of the match and de Koning will have felt particularly hard done by after his side succumbed to a late penalty – Sander Fischer bringing down Belgian striker, Loris Brogno who then picked himself up to convert the resultant spot kick for his third goal in as many games with five minutes to play.

Precious little has gone right for the recipient of the 2015/16 Rinus Michels Award – Erik ten Hag, whose Utrecht side have now collected just one point from their opening three games after slumping to their second home defeat of the season – this time at the hands of AZ Alkmaar.

John van den Brom’s men came into the encounter fresh from a comprehensive 3-0 success in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League playoff against FK Vojvodina in Serbia and took the lead at the Stadion Galgenwaard after 25 minutes through Norwegian, Marcus Henriksen’s spectacular second goal of the season.

The Utrecht coach did manage to elicit a response from his troops after the half time interval – 20-year-old forward, Patrick Joosten bringing the home side back on level terms with a speculative drive from well outside the area with 53 minutes on the clock. Yet, it was the visitors who ensured they would head into Thursday’s second leg at the AFAS Stadion in the best possible frame of mind when Iranian international, Alireza Jahanbakhsh secured all three points with a well-placed daisy cutter from just outside the area with six minutes remaining.

A Karim El Ahmadi volley was the sole highlight of a largely uneventful contest at the Polman Stadion in Almelo where Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Feyenoord tuned up for next weekend’s Rotterdam derby against Excelsior by continuing their imperious early season form, making it three wins from three at the expense of Heracles to close out the third week of action atop the Eredivisie standings.
