EREDIVISIE REPORT: WEEK 1… Part Two

Header-EredivisieReport

WEEK ONE (PART TWO) – 11TH AND 12TH AUGUST 2015

So a goalkeeper scored an equaliser in the dying seconds with an outstanding back-heeled flick in the Eredivisie this week – Will Burns is here to report on the remaining five games in the Dutch top flight from week one.

Danish goalkeeper Martin Hansen was the toast of The Hague this past Tuesday after scoring an injury-time winner for ADO Den Haag in their opening day clash with defending champions PSV. Now anytime a keeper sprints up the pitch for a last minute set piece, it is always an exciting time to see if the big man can rise above all others to smash a header home past his opposite number.

However, this was no header – a poor free-kick from Kenji Gorre gave Hansen the option of instinctively flicking his boot up for a back-heel, which he connected perfectly with to skim the ball past Jeroen Zoet for the draw.

PSV had started well and took the lead, dubiously, through their new number ten, Adam Maher. Replays of the goal showed that Maher was offside when he received the ball on 23 minutes to put PSV in front. However, minutes later the score was all level. Colombian right-back Santiago Arias bundled over Aaron Meijers which looked outside the penalty area, but referee Richard Liesveld pointed to the spot and Ronald Alberg converted.

Luuk de Jong opened his account for the season just after the hour mark, simply pushing a header past Hansen after the ADO defence left the big striker unmarked until Hansen clinched a point with his dramatic leveller. A disappointing start for PSV’s looking to retain their Eredivisie title.

In Tuesday’s late game, Heerenveen were impressive in their 3-1 win over newly promoted De Graafschap. The Eredivisie new boys found themselves two goals down by half-time after Simon Thern took advantage of a defensive mix-up by Lion Kaak to slot past Hidde Jurjus in the De Graafschap goal. Debutant Mitchell te Vrede, a signing this week from Feyenoord, notching the second after some great work down the wing from the industrious Luciano Narsingh.

It was more of the same after the break and Thern headed home on 53 minutes for his second and Heerenveen’s third. A Vincent Vermeij header was just a consolation for the visitors and they look to turn things around on Saturday as they host PEC Zwolle.

Wednesday’s games began with a poor game in Groningen, as Edwin van der Looi’s side faced FC Twente which ended all square at 1-1. Twente took the lead when Renato Tapia was left alone at the front post and headed home a Hakim Ziyech corner just before the break. However, Groningen replied in the 83rd minute to salvage a point through a Michael de Leeuw goal after being played through on goal by substitute Danny Hoesen.

SC Cambuur battled back from two goals down to a 2-2 draw away at PEC Zwolle. Zwolle’s new defender Dirk Marcellis grabbed the opening goal on 31 minutes after some great footwork evading the Cambuur defence by fellow new signing Lars Veldwijk (on loan from Nottingham Forest). Minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead with a tremendous left-footed long drive from Sheraldo Becker giving Leonard Nienhuis no chance in goal. The Leeuwarden-outfit fought hard and clinched a lifeline with twenty minutes to go through Erik Bakker and seven minutes later the scores were level. Sjoerd Overgoor finished beautifully after Bakker laid it on a plate for the midfielder to secure a point.

In the final game of the week, N.E.C. Nijmegen left it late to defeat Excelsior. It was a uneventful and un-entertaining affair that ended with a Navarone Foor goal with just minutes remaining.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: WEEK 1… Part One

Header-EredivisieReport

WEEK ONE (PART ONE) – 8TH AND 9TH AUGUST 2015

The opening weekend of the Dutch league season was severely affected by police strike action, and due to this, the nine Eredivisie games are to be spread across the majority of the week. Will Burns is on hand to give you a rundown of all the action from the first four matches.

In an amazing contrast on Sunday morning, after watching the European performances of the past fortnight, the disappointing Ajax travelled to Alkmaar to face the promising AZ and the tables were turned. The Amsterdammers left the AFAS Stadion with a 3-0 win after an Anwar El Ghazi brace followed by Nemanja Gudelj notching against the club he left in the summer.

Ajax scored all three inside the first-half with El Ghazi opening the scoring on 14 minutes with a sublime effort after some quick thinking from Mitchell Dijks. A quickly took free-kick allowed El Ghazi some space some 30 yards out and El Ghazi, after meeting his hero in the summer, hit a Ronaldo-like dipping shot giving AZ stopper Sergio Rochet no chance of saving.

It was a close affair with AZ hitman Vincent Janssen look the most likely to threaten for the John van der Brom’s side but it was his goalkeeper Rochet that handed the game to Frank de Boer’s outfit. El Ghazi got his head on the end of a whipping Gudelj free-kick and Rochet, although the Uruguayan stopped the effort, he failed to control and ended up fumbling the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

The third and final goal by Gudelj was also another that Rochet would not like to watch in the highlights that evening, after parrying the Serbian’s long range effort into the top corner of his goal.

AZ coach Van der Brom stated he felt sorry for his supporters that sold out the stadium for this match, but will look to make amends next weekend in Rotterdam against Excelsior. For De Boer, his side showed no Euro hangover as they look to challenge to regain the Eredivisie crown taken from them by PSV last season.

In the opening game of the season, Roda JC made a return to the Eredivisie with a hefty 3-1 win over Heracles even though the Almelo outfit went ahead after the half-hour mark through Iliass Bel Hassani. Although, the lead did not last long as four minutes later, Edwin Gyasi managed to weave his through to equalise. Early in the second half, Roda took the advantage with Tom van Hyfte scrambling the ball home after Gyasi’s header hit the post. Heracles pressed to level the game up but in the final moments, Hicham Faik smashed home a long range effort to cement all three points.

Dirk Kuyt also made his return to the Dutch top flight leading Feyenoord to a 3-2 victory over FC Utrecht at De Kuip on Saturday evening. Even though the Rotterdammers were reduced to ten-man after young right-back Rick Karsdorp was harshly dismissed by referee Kevin Blom early in the second-half. Turkish striker Colin-Kazim Richards gave Giovanni van Bronckhorst a great start to his managerial career heading home debutant Marko Vejinovic’s free-kick to make it 1-0.

After Karsdorp was shown his marching orders for his hard tackle on Christian Kum, Utrecht levelled the scoring through French striker Sébastien Haller, whom signed permanently from Auxerre last month on 75 minutes, however the score was only 1-1 for a few moments.

The equaliser fired up Van Bronckhorst’s side and they regained the lead two minutes later when substitute Tonny Vilhena, rumoured to be leaving the club, was at the back post to knock home Karim El-Ahmadi’s cross. With the De Kuip faithful in full force, Feyenoord pressed to kill the game off and Bilal Başaçıkoğlu was tripped in the area by Yannick Cortie, and Kuyt marked his return with a successful penalty conversion. Haller nabbed an injury-time consolation through a penalty kick of his own but it was Feyenoord that ended as the victors by three goals to two.

Looking to build on a successful campaign last season, Willem II boss Jurgen Streppel lead his team out full of confidence on Sunday afternoon against Peter Bosz’ Vitesse in a game that ended tied at a goal apiece. The Tilburg side took the lead just after the hour mark through new recruit Erik Falkenburg before Ukrainian midfielder Denis Oliynyk.

A further five contests will make up week one of the Eredivisie to take place Tuesday and Wednesday this week… if the police do not decide on another strike?!

Check back later this week for ‘Part Two’ of the Eredivisie report.

Chelsea’s Traore grabs crucial three points for Vitesse

Header-EredivisieReport

A convincing warrior-like performance from Vitesse saw them nick all three points away from struggling NAC Breda, courtesy of Bertrand Traoré’s solitary strike writes Cian Woulfe.

The visitors came into this game high on confidence, fresh off the back of beating champions Ajax last weekend and Peter Bosz’s side thoroughly dominated the fixture in every aspect, restricting the helpless hosts to just three shots on goal.

Traoré, the Burkina Faso striker on loan from Chelsea, capitalised on an awful piece of defending from young defender Menno Koch, before sliding the ball past the desperate Ten Rouwelaar to win it for Vitesse.

The Arnhem side started the game brightly, when Traore shot straight at the goalkeeper, following clever build-up play from Marko Vejinovic and Valeri ‘Vako’ Qazaishvili. NAC struggled to make an immediate impact on the game, though due to Vitesse’s apparent susceptibility to a counter-attack, they were able to break free quite a lot.

Vejinovic almost scored one of the goals of the season on 19 minutes, when he hit a 40 yard free-kick towards the bottom corner, but Rouwelaar managed to tip it round the post, albeit bringing over-hopeful Vitesse supporters off their seats in the process.

Breda had their only clear-cut chance of the game on 35 minutes, when the aforementioned Koch, on loan from league leaders PSV, smashed an unmarked header just inches wide of the goal, as Eloy Room stood stranded in the visiting goal.

Denys Oliynyk should have been the man to instigate his side finally taking the lead when he sublimely chested down Vejinovic’s exquisite long-ball, but he blasted over on the turn, from close range.

The second half didn’t start quite so explosively as the first, with only a side-netting-bound shot from Zakaria Labyad threatening either goal in the first 10 minutes.

It then took a moment of slack defending from Breda’s back-line to set Traore poking the ball underneath the goalkeeper, silencing the Rat Verlegh Stadion.

NAC almost found a bizarre route into the game on 70 minutes however, when Adnane Tighadouini – former Vitesse player and NAC’s only bright spark in the game – sent a seemingly harmless cross over, only for it to fool Room and hit the inside of the far post and stun Vitesse’s defence, while sending the home crowd into overdrive.

Disappointingly though, rather than use that momentum and exploit the momentary lapse in Vitesse’s concentration, Breda failed to register another shot on goal for the rest of the game, allowing the jubilant visitors to see out the game with relative comfort, even being able to bring off star player Traore.

The only other chance at either side feel to Vako, when substitute and winner of the game against Ajax last week Uros Djurdjevic pulled the ball back, only for the Georgian midfielder to poke wide of an open goal.

The win sees Vitesse stay in 8th place, while panic-stricken NAC continue their miserable winless run and sit slumped in 17th.

EREDIVISIE MID-YEAR REPORT

Header-EredivisieReport

We are at the halfway mark in the Eredivisie and Willem Slor is on hand to explain what has happened this season so far…

The winter break has arrived in Europe, and the Eredivisie is at a standstill. From what we have seen so far in the league, regularity has been bestowed upon the top three teams; PSV, Ajax, and Feyenoord. The ‘Big Three’ of the Eredivisie have found their respective place, as these three teams together hold more than 50 percent of the total Dutch Championships. They also contend in a variety of rivalries, primarily ‘De Klassieker’, which describes the always-exciting game between Ajax and Feyenoord.  These three teams continue to fight for the first place, and every single point loss can be detrimental to its chances of becoming the champion.

However, these three teams have not only historically maintained greatness, in this year most of the players in the Eredivisie have received the highest rating, including PSV’s Memphis Depay, Feyenoord’s Jordy Clasie, Colin Kazim-Richards, Kenneth Vermeer, Jens Toornstra, and Ajax’s Davy Klaassen, Arka Milik, and Anwar El-Ghazi, who seemed to have drawn international attention with their performances in the Champions League rounds.  Not only that, but the big three are all advancing in the Europa League, a sight to see surely for many Dutch supporters.

In team efforts, Feyenoord has the highest percentage of ball possession, rounding up at 62 percent. The team also has the highest amount of corners (117). Ajax’s Davy Klaassen holds the number one position for most assists (8), Niklas Moisander has the most successful pass rate (1041), while Ajax has the most goals from direct free kicks(3). Memphis Depay has the most shots on goals (59).

PEC Zwolle, a solid fourth place contender, has shown its supporters a kind of ‘voetbal’ that exhibits solid wins, strong finishing skills, but most importantly, beautiful attacks. Its team has had its fair amount of magical combinations and superb executions. A very well deserved spot for PEC Zwolle. Plus, who doesn’t like a joyful Ron Jans in a post-match interview? The guy says the greatest things when the W is in the pocket.

FC Twente has faced one of its trickiest first half of the semester, facing anything from light injuries to white tissues being displayed for Alfred Schreuder. A magnificent comeback last weekend signified its retaliation against its latest criticism, but can they continue to hold up for the second half of the competition? It’s winger, Jesús Manuel Corona, holds the season record for most successful dribbles (42), but does this really mean anything if those dribbles don’t lead to a goal?

AZ is coasting steadily, receiving 28 points in 17 matches, just as much as FC Twente. To its credit, the team has the longest series without suffering a goal (4 games) and its centre-back, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, holds the most interceptions for the first half of the season(65).

SC Cambuur, FC Groningen and FC Utrecht have been fighting to claim seventh, eighth and ninth places. Cambuur holds on to the seventh; a solid standing for a team that has only recently been promoted to the Eredivisie. Overall, a respectable position for Cambuur, but also a target for Groningen and Utrecht to achieve. Groningen’s keeper Sergio Padt, has the most saves out of all the keepers in the Eredivisie (71). This means that he is a solid goalkeeper, but also that Groningen’s defense isn’t completely up to par with Padt’s level: a goalie wouldn’t have to stop that many shots if the defense did its job.  Tommy Oar, the Australian winger for FC Utrecht, has created the most changes for its attackers (45).

As we start to dwindle down the list, the teams that stand between the number nine and 18 have its individual issues. Vitesse, which was considered a powerhouse last season, has not forgotten to play good football, but seems to have completely forgotten how to score on goal. No goals, no points. In order for Vitesse to claim its righteous spot, goals will have to start dropping left and right.

Heerenveen owns the top scorer of the Eredivisie, Mark Uth (11), but these goals seem to have no significance, as these goals mostly tie up or show retribution to defeat for Heerenveen, but they hardly seem to be decisive in wins.

Willem II, Excelsior, ADO Den Haag, Heracles, and Go Ahead Eagles are all fun teams to watch, as they occasionally give the top teams a hard time and makes these top teams work for their points. However, they mostly lack the power that all the top teams possess, and this usually leads to either a tie or a defeat. When they play each other, it’s really a toss-up which team would win. But they’re always fun to watch.

NAC Breda and FC Dordrecht fight ever so hard to stay away from elimination, but if nothing happens in the second half of the season, it seems that these two teams are doomed. Dordrecht recently received its first point at home since 1995; this is a milestone that does not belong in the Eredivisie.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: WEEK EIGHT

Header-EredivisieReport

Here’s your weekly summary of the Eredivisie by Willem Slor.

ADO Den Haag battled Vitesse away in an eventful game that ended up in favor for Vitesse 6-1. Michiel Kramer added the only goal for The Hague, simultaneously making him the top-scorer of the Eredivisie with six goals in eight matches. However, his efforts were irrelevant as Vitesse’s Kelvin Leerdam finished with two goals, adding two to the five goals that were scored for Vitesse in 40 minutes. Final score: 6-1 in favor of Vitesse.

Vitesse’s coach Peter Bosz about the game: “We’re now playing good football AND we’re scoring”. Overall, the game was surely a spectacle for the home fans.

Due to the international games next weekend, Vitesse will face Tilburg’s Willem II at Tilburg, which shouldn’t be a problem for the Arnhemmers. ADO Den Haag faces NAC Breda away and should be a chance for Kramer to pull away from other competitors regarding total goals.

Ajax played PEC Zwolle at home, a game that was not as predictable as it sounded before kick-off. Why? PEC has eliminated Ajax twice in a row now, and was looking to make it three. Ajax wanted revenge on these games, but both teams ended up not triumphing their counterpart: 0-0. PEC didn’t take advantage of the mess in Ajax’s defense. However, Ajax couldn’t pull away either due to the lack of concentration with shots on goal. They both neglected to play with quality, but in an optimistic view, one can debate that they didn’t have any luck either. Ajax’s Frank de Boer commented on PEC’s performance: “they played up to their capabilities and they did that well, but if there had to be a winner it would be us”. PEC’s Ron Jans commented on his teams’ performance: “We deserved this one point and we even could’ve ended up with more”.

FC Twente vs. Ajax on October 18th should be a really good game, as Twente is the only undefeated team in the Eredivisie and looks to lengthen this streak.  Zwolle faces Go Ahead Eagles on October 19th.

AZ went up against FC Twente, which proved to be the match of the week. There were fights, goals, and the winner would end up joining the top 3 with PSV and Ajax. AZ has faced a multitude of problems, as it has gone through 3 coaches in 8 games, sticking with the fourth, Van Der Brom, for now. Although the game ended up in a tie, 2-2, it was anything but boring. Robert Mühren ended his three-game dry spell by scoring AZ’s first goal and Twente remains undefeated as they face Ajax in two weekends from now. Coach Van Der Brom (AZ): “ We’ve seen an AZ who played and fought hard”. They will face PSV on October 18th; a match-up that shouldn’t go unnoticed either.

Cambuur played Dordrecht and ended up taking over the game. The first goal for Cambuur came within the first minute and the second goal for Cambuur came 5 minutes later. Cambuur remained overall dominant for the remainder of the game. Final score: 41 Cambuur. Cambuur will face sc Heereveen and Dordrecht will go against FC Utrecht, a team that hasn’t been profoundly dominant in the Eredivisie either.

PSV modestly defeated Excelsior in a 3-0 victory. Although Excelsior hasn’t beaten PSV Eindhoven on their own turf in 43 years, PSV could’ve beaten Excelsior with a significant amount of goals. Henk Dijkuizen from Excelsior said he was hoping” not to end up with 6 or 7 to 0.” while Cocu’s mission was overall clear:”We didn’t give away anything and we were constantly looking for a goal”. A possible reason behind this modest victory was the red card given to PSV’s Bruma in the 60th minute when he tackled a broken-through Excelsior player. Overall, a fun game to watch and an easy 3 points for PSV to keep their lead.

NAC Breda and Heracles turned out to be quite the spectacle: 61 for Heracles. They obtained the lead within the first ten minutes of the game and never gave it away. Things got worse for NAC when a red card in the 29th minute unleashed a scoring frenzy, which is a main reason for the 6-1 victory. Heracles is optimistic though: Coach Stegeman said that “we have a lot of work to do but this is a very fun start”.

Feyenoord, who has been battling to regain their spot had a good game this weekend. They beat FC Groningen 4-0, an exhibition that was joyful to watch. However, both teams were very mediocre throughout the first half. Things flared up in the second half when a Groningen player got sent of, allowing Feyenoord key players like Immers to take control of the game. Feyenoord’s coach Fred Rutten: “This is a very nice reward”. Groningen’s Van De Looi tended to feel the opposite about his team:”We don’t have the players playing on their right positions”.

Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles both played sloppy in the first half, but after three minutes in the second half Utrecht finds two goals in the back of the Eagles’ goal. However, Go Ahead kept fighting and ended up winning the game in injury time. Final score: 3-2 for Go Ahead Eagles.

Lastly, Willem II defeated Heerenveen by 21, which lead to a humorous comment by Willem II’s coach Streppel: “We have not received 12 points this quickly. Last time we had 12 points we had to wait till Easter. The snow had already melted at that point”.

EREDIVISIE: Ajax 0-0 PEC Zwolle

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

AjaxZwolle

AJAX 0 – 0 PEC ZWOLLE

The first half was goalless, but it was intriguing contest as in form PEC Zwolle went to Ajax to try and get something from the game. An early chance fell the way of Czech forward Tomas Necid, but his shot was saved by Jasper Cillessen. Niklas Moisander came close to scoring as he fired a shot from outside the penalty area just wide, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson was proving to be a real threat as he had several chances in the opening stages to open the scoring writes Jack Jakeman.
Although Ajax were dominant in possession as you would expect, Zwolle looked very dangerous on the break with Tomas Necid looking like he had a goal in him as he forced another good save out of Cillessen as the half progressed, while the pace of Ryan Thomas and Jody Lukoki looked like it could prove Ajax problems.
Joel Veltman was playing very well at the centre of the Ajax defence, both at the back and he looked assured in possession, often making the correct decisions to set up attacks for the home side. Moisander, Sigthorsson and Thulani Serero all had the ball in promising situations at the back end of the half, but they all wasted the positions with a poor final product. Ajax needed to be more clinical, as Zwolle looked like they would get a goal as the game wore on. In the closing stages of the half, Joel Veltman headed just over from a Lasse Schone set piece.
The second half was more of the same, with both sides having chances, but lacking the quality in front of goal. Lasse Schone had a chance from range, which was well stopped by Hahn. Ajax had the better chances, and it was Sigthorsson who came closest after hitting the bar from close range, a chance he normally puts in the net.
For the away side, Tomas Necid continued to be a huge threat as he held the ball up well and constantly troubled the Ajax back line. His drive from distance forced the Dutch national keeper Cillessen into another stop. He was called into action only moments later as Bram van Polen was denied by the World Cup star. Ricardo Krishna had a late chance but blazed over.
The game fizzled out into a draw as neither side created many chances in the final stages, the result was better for the away side, who remain level with the Eredivisie champions. Today’s results have seen PSV open a two point lead, but the start of the season has been intriguing at the summit.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 4-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2014

FeyenoordGroningen

FEYENOORD 4 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

Feyenoord score four as they dominate 10-man Groningen. The sending off of Johan Kappelhof at 1-0 left Groningen with an uphill task and they were put to the sword by a very good Feyenoord forward line writes Ryan O’Grady.

Feyenoord and Groningen were both coming into this game off the back of two consecutive wins with Feyenoord perhaps showing that they are starting to recover from a difficult start to season in which they were knocked out of Champions’ League qualifying and the KNVB Beker. In their last two games they beat Go Ahead Eagles 4-0 in the Eredivisie, after losing to them in the cup, and Elvis Manu scored a late goal to secure victory against Standard Liege in the Europa League. Groningen won their cup game 4-1 against Topklasse (3rd Division) side Barendrecht and last weekend beat Willem II 1-0 at home in the league.

It was relatively quiet opening twenty minutes to start the game, the only events of note were a Jens Toornstra free-kick that was cleared by Maikel Kieftenbeld and a booking for Kappelhof, something that would be even more significant later. It all began in earnest in the 20th minute when Colin Kazim-Richards retrieved the ball inside the box before spinning and managing to get a shot away that was well saved by Sergio Padt. The rebound fell to Jordy Clasie and with Padt still on the floor he pretty much had an open goal to aim at but skied it badly from about 10 yards out. Feyenoord then got themselves ahead only 3 minutes later when Kazim-Richards played a lovely one-two on the edge of the box with Lex Immers before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the net. They had a chance to double their lead in the 30th minute when Kappelhof got his clearance badly wrong and the ball went out for a corner which Terence Kongolo subsequently headed just wide.

Elvis Manu then joined in the action in the 36th minute when he cut in from the left hand side and was in an extremely dangerous position but put his effort well over Padt’s bar. This was followed by a Feyenoord penalty claim when Toornstra appeared to be tripped by Danny Hoesen just inside the box but the referee Tom van Sichem wasn’t having it and gave the goal kick after the ball had rolled out of play.

The second half started with a kerfuffle when a corner from Groningen came in and there was a scramble in the box before Vermeer managed to grab it but as he was grabbing it Eric Botteghin swung for the ball and accidentally caught Vermeer in the face. He immediately tried to apologise but the Feyenoord players weren’t and a minor ruckus was started. The referee ended up booking Botteghin. As mentioned earlier Kappelhof was booked in the first half and in the 56th minute he picked up his second yellow and was sent off leaving coach Erwin van de Looi with 10 men and made it even tougher for his side to try and get back into the game. Midfielder Nick van der Velden was brought off for defender Roland Baas as a result. Groningen paid for the sending off almost immediately as in the 57th minute Lex Immers scored a wonderful header. Karim El Ahmadi ran down the right before delivering a ball into the centre of the box that Immers ran onto from the left hand side and headed it back the way it came leaving Padt with no chance. The Dutch attacking midfielder then had another good headed chance in the 65th minute when another sublime cross, this time from Australian Luke Wilkshire, found its way to Immers who this time could only head it past the post.

Manu then had a one-on-one with the keeper and he tried to put it through the keeper’s legs but the keeper was able to close his legs just in time and deflect it away from goal. Substitute Jean-Paul Boëtius made it 3-0 soon after in the 83rd minute when yet another brilliant cross from Wilkshire found another substitute in Mitchell te Vrede who his header was brilliantly saved by Padt but the ball flew straight up and Boëtius came in and headed home from close range. Te Vrede did manage to get himself on the scoresheet 5 minutes when a lovely chipped cross from Lex Immers found the bug Dutchmen unmarked in the 6 yard box and this time he didn’t Padt a chance.

EREDIVISIE: PSV 3-0 Excelsior

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

PSVExcelsior

PSV 3-0 EXCELSIOR

Despite their exploits in Europe, PSV outclassed Excelsior on Sunday, with pace and quality in the final third being the decisive factor. The home side are really making a claim for the title this season, after years of domination by Ajax writes Jake Jackman.

It was going to be difficult for PSV after playing in Russia just days ago, and Excelsior started well to increase the pressure, making the most of the tiredness of the home players. Although Jurgen Locadia had an early chance, which was saved well by Coutinho, the pressure was all Excelsior for the next 15 minutes. Jordan Botaka had a couple of chances and looked very dangerous with his pace, but he failed to produce quality when it came to the final product.

PSV started to show their quality, with Florian Jozefzoon and Luciano Narsingh proving numerous problems for the Excelsior defence, who were playing a high line, which was going to get exploited eventually. The home side scored a disallowed goal, through Jozefzoon as the pressure increased. Both Jozefzoon and Georginio Wijnaldum forced good saves out of the Excelsior keeper Coutinho. The former then had another chance from a header, but put it straight at Coutinho.

The home side managed to get Jozefzoon and Narsingh through on the wings on numerous occasions, but Excelsior were defending well in last ditch situations, which allowed them to keep the scores level. The two PSV wingers were looking very good as the first half progressed, but it was a bizarre way that led to PSV opening the scoring as Adam Maher put the ball back into the danger area, and confusion between the Excelsior defence and Coutinho led to the ball creeping in at the far post. The limited celebrations show that a shot wasn’t Maher’s intentions, but PSV won’t complain.

The home side nearly doubled their lead through right back Arias, as his deflected shot forced a great save out of Coutinho, who had to tip it over the bar. PSV did score before the break as their pace paid dividends as Locadia timed his run well to find space behind the Excelsior defence, before his shot goalwards was converted by Narsingh.

The second half was all PSV to start with as Wijnaldum and Jozefzoon both had shots saved early on, before an excellent finish from Jurgen Locadia saw the home side go three in front. It was a classic forward’s goal, as he finished well from close range. The pressure continued to build and the resistance showed early from Excelsior had all but disappeared.

Then something happened that could have allowed Excelsior back into the match as Jeffrey Bruma got a straight red card for a foul just outside the penalty box, although there was a lot of disagreement from PSV, which also saw Phillip Cocu get sent to the stands. Heracles then had a lot of chances to close the deficit as Sander Fischer, Adil Auassar, Rick Kruys and Daryl van Mieghem all had chances, but none of them could find the back of the net.

The game was fading out as the result was secured, but there were still chances for both sides. Andres Guardado missed the target worth a header after finding space in the box, while Luigi Bruins forced a good save from Jeroen Zoet. Substitute Rai Vloet had a late chance, but saw his shot fly wide.

It was a good contest for the first twenty minutes, as Excelsior looked sharp, but as soon as PSV opened the scoring, the quality shone through and they went on to dominate the game. The attacking trio of Locadia, Jozefzoon and Narsingh were all impressive and it shows the depth of the squad available to Cocu. The sending off of Bruma had little effect and PSV’s good start continues.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: WEEK SEVEN

Header-EredivisieReport

Here’s your weekly summary of the Eredivisie by Willem Slor.

Heerenveen hosted PSV and although both teams are not considered glamorous in its football, it didn’t take long to realize that this game was going to be a showstopper. The first chance for PSV came after 39 seconds while Heerenveen didn’t get a proper shot in till the eighth minute. However, the physical contact and tensions among the team players were already starting to rise early on in the game, and these were tensions that match official Kevin Blom could not control as a referee. After disallowing two borderline insignificant fouls in PSV’s penalty box, which lead to permanent premature balding for Heerenveen fans, Heerenveen suffered a red card after 33 minutes when a bad free kick send PSV’s striker Jozefzoon off to the races and hitting the deck in a breakthrough. Red card for Heerenveen because of what the announcer of the game at the time called “ you can barely call that a foul”.

But, Heereveen was more hungry for the win than PSV, so much so that the Eindhoven side did not impress anyone, not even themselves. They showed the lack of motivation and power, which has lead to a lot of internal anger in the team. They get even more outraged when PSV suffered a red card after an “idiotic” foul send a PSV defender of the field in the 69th minute. Now level in men, it didn’t take long for Heerenveen to show that they wanted it more. In the 78th minute, a perfect attack between three Heereveen players send the ball past the goal of PSV. It took a 1-0 lead for Heerenveen for PSV to start attacking more than it did.

But it was pointless as after 95 minutes, Heerenveen took the three points and claimed 14 points after they’ve really stuck their necks out there and came up as winners. The mixed feelings of the coaches were logical: Lodeweges (Heereveen) was “really happy” for “being the boss” on the pitch, while Cocu was “angry”, stating, “there is no excuse” for the weak performance that they showed. Heereveen keeps climbing up while PSV is showing troubles early in the season.

Excelsior and Cambuur met for the first time in Eredivisie history and both displayed good forms against each other. Excelsior gained a 1-0 lead in the 22th minute by Van Weert, who was having trouble scoring in general but used a little help from Nienhuis’ unfortunate rebound to claim his goal. Cambuur had the majority of the possession, but Excelsior had the majority of shots in the first half. In the second half, after a turned down goal by Excelsior, Ogbeche evens the game at 1-1 in the 62th minute, showing a small improvement in Cambuur’s ability to finish their shots on goal leading to receiving one point from the ordeal. Coach De Jong (Cambuur) said “it wouldn’t have been fair if we would’ve won. I am content with this score”, while Excelsior was unsatisfied after their goal was unrightfully called offside, to which the referee said: “I wish I would’ve seen these images then because I can now see that the goal was legitimate”. Cambuur barely scratches one point from the surface while Excelsior continues to face problems regarding the ability to collect points.

Twente and FC Utrecht matched up in the seventh round of the Eredivisie. Twente showed its imminent frustration this season by expressing their disorganization via the lack of coordination in the attacks. However, this overall gameplay by Twente occurred only after the first 15 minutes, because after the first 10 minutes of the game, a goal was produced out of the three early attacks that Twente had on Groningen. The first goal arrived in the fifth minute through a beautiful free kick by Ebecillio and Twente took the lead. Although having the majority of the ball, Mark Diemers was the first one who got a shot off for Utrecht, and that didn’t happen until the 32nd minute. However, they display better coordination than Twente but also had horrible misfortune: an own goal by Kum in the 64th minute seemed to seal the deal. However, Utrecht kept its head cool and started playing even more dominant than they already were playing. In the 71st minute, youngling Ayoub scored the 2-1 for Utrecht out of a beautiful volley. The hope for Utrecht that was rebuilt after that goal diminished as quick as it came. After a second yellow card given to Ayoub, the ten-manned Utrecht failed to control the mediocre play by Twente and the game ended in 3-1 after Castagnos strongly finished a shot on goal. Twente won its third game in a row, although Utrecht definitely deserved at least a tie. Schreuder (FC Twente) seems to acknowledge this: “We cannot be happy with our victory. Yes, we got three points but the way of playing was just bad”. Twente lacks leading qualities as Utrecht struggles to place the ball in the net. Final Score: 3-1.

FC Groningen & Willem II displayed unusual events as the referee became the highlight of the match. Groningen started strong and after 2 free kicks in just 1 minute, a handball by Botteghin caused a penalty, which was masterfully shot in the back of the net by De Leeuw. Afterwards, the referee did not call two very harsh-fouls, which lead the commentator, among others, to describe the events as “unbelievable”. A hands-ball in the opposite penalty box and a hard foul on a player from Willem II lead to serious confusion by the players from Tilburg.

In the second half, Groningen put even more pressure on Willem II but completely slacked off in defense as the clock dwindled down. The score stayed 1-0 but all in all, a bad game from both parties. FC Groningen luckily grabbed three points while Willem II cannot get themselves together to score any other goals.  Willem II coach Streppel had the following to say: “If the referee sees the replays of those two incidents, I’m sure he will feel bad about it”, while Van De Looi (Groningen) seemed unknowing about the subject: “I didn’t see it so the two moments in the box were unsure to me”.

In other games, Ajax annihilated NAC Breda 5-2, which marked a hat-trick by Sigthorsson, a goal by last week’s match winner Van Rhijn and defender Joel Veltman. NAC made it interesting around the 60th minute scoring the 1-3 and brought a moment of hesitation to Ajax, but was forced to accept its defeat. Frank de Boer stated to have “claimed revenge” due to last week’s “very, very bad” performance.

PEC Zwolle faced Heracles and produced a match containing 6 goals and a red card. The final score was 4-2 for PEC Zwolle, adding on to the problems at Heracles in regards to a severe lack of points.

ADO Den Haag met with AZ and through a beautiful goal in the 45th minute by AZ’s Poulsen, the score became 1-1 and the tide turned. AZ claimed victory with 2 goals to 3 in The Hague.

Go Ahead Eagles faced Feyenoord and was unmatched to the pressure and tempo created by Feyenoord. Feyenoord played well and made sure to acknowledge their coach Fred Rutten, who had been facing criticism in the last couple of weeks. Feyenoord silenced the critics with a 0-4 victory. Rutte: “I’m satisfied about the match and the team got their victory that they were waiting for”.

Lastly, Dordrecht and Vitesse put up a scoring frenzy as the dominant Vitesse won with 4 goals. Final score: 2-6.

After the seventh round in the Eredivisie, PEC Zwolle, Ajax, and PSV share first place while Heerenveen and Twente shortly follow in second and third place. AZ, Cambuur, and Groningen share fourth place, making the race for the top already as exciting as can be. Next week’s match to look for is Ajax-PEC Zwolle who will face each other at 16:45 local time in the ArenA on Saturday October 5th, 2014.

EREDIVISIE: Heerenveen 1-0 PSV

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2014

HeerenveenPSV

HEERENVEEN 1 – 0 PSV

Potential star of the future Daley Sinkgraven grabbed the winner as PSV lost for only the second time this season and both sides have a man sent off writes Ryan OGrady.

The home side came into this game missing striker Sam Larsson and having lost to Eerste Divisie side Roda JC 2-1 in the cup. Coach Dwight Lodeweges was scathing in his reflection on the game whilst captain Martin de Roon said the six senior players who played in that game had to take responsibility, not the 5 youngsters who were replaced for this game. PSV also brought an injury list with them as Andrés Guardado, Luuk de Jong and star player Memphis Depay were all missing, however PSV did manage to win their midweek cup game against FC Utrecht 2-0.

Despite it being goalless in the first half it was far from boring, the half had 18 attempts on goal and a red card to boot as well. PSV got themselves an early half chance in only the 38th second after Adam Maher just managed to keep the ball in on the sideline before playing a low cross to Jurgen Locadia but the ball bobbled just before the Dutch striker hit it and as a result it went wide of the near post. Heerenveen then took control of the game, pressing high and repeatedly forcing mistakes from PSV players. Their first chance came in the 5th minute when Joey van den Berg had a dangerous shot that looked goal bound but it his teammate, German frontman Mark Uth. They then had another chance only two minutes later when Daley Sinkgraven brilliantly controlled a long ball on his chest before knocking past a defender. Unfortunately he could only muster a weak shot and as a result Jeroen Zoet recovered the ball easily. Despite dominating, Heerenveen’s final ball wasn’t always great and as a result they sometimes struggled to break down the PSV defence. They nearly had a stroke of luck in the 21st minute when Joost van Aken mishit a long range effort and it was going well wide but Uth nearly ran onto it and had he been able to control it then he would’ve been through on goal.

The direction of the first half started to change after that chance with PSV starting to come back into the game. In the 26th minute Luciano Narsingh ran into the box before pulling the ball back for Georginio Wijnaldum who back heeled it to Florian Jozefzoon who hit a low curled effort towards the bottom corner but Kristoffer Nordfeldt in the Heerenveen net managed to change direction at the last second and push it just past the post. Heerenveen did have a couple of chances in the period of PSV dominance, these were both down to Jetro Willems, firstly when the ball was played to Luciano Slagveer on the right wing Willems slipped allowing Slagveer to race clear. Fortunately for Willems, Slagveer tried to square it for Uth rather than shoot himself and Jeffrey Bruma knocked it behind for a corner. Then both Willems and Sinkgraven went for the ball in the 32nd minute but Willems appeared to pull out allowing SInkgraven to cross for Uth who after controlling it with his chest hit a shot on the spin that was well saved by Zoet.

Then came the first of the two sending offs. Jozefzoon was put through and was in on goal when Stefano Marzo appeared to cut across the back of the PSV winger bringing him down. As Marzo was the last man he was sent off but replays showed that Jozefzoon had gone a bit theatrically although the red card was justifiable. Almost immediately afterwards Locadia went down in the box and half-heartedly appealed for a penalty but referee Kevin Blom wasn’t swayed and simply told the young striker to get back on his feet.

PSV threatened early in the second half as well, Adam Maher had a decent chance in the 53rd minute when he hit the side netting from a tight angle. The game swung back in Heerenveen’s favour in the 68th minute when Joshua Brenet was sent off for a challenge on Uth. It initially seemed harsh but replays showed that Brenet clearly had his studs up and caught Uth on his inner thigh after the ball had already gone. This forced Phillip Cocu to bring off striker Jurgen Locadia for defender Santiago Arias. Heerenveen’s pressure finally payed off in the 77th minute after some neat build-up play resulted in a goal for Daley Sinkgraven. Initially Slagveer had the ball just inside PSV’s half. He passed the ball to Uth who immediately gave it back with a lovely first time pass, Slagveer then drew in two PSV defenders creating space for Sinkgraven who he then subsequently passed to. The young Dutchman then appeared to get the ball stuck underneath his feet but then produced a lovely finish into the top corner leaving Zoet with no chance. PSV obviously needed to get back into the game but they were only able to muster up one decent opportunity which fell to Jeffrey Bruma. A shot from Wijnaldum was deflected off Doke Schmidt for a corner and the resulting ball in fell to the feet of Bruma but he could only put his effort over the bar.

EREDIVISIE: FC Utrecht 1-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

UtrechtGroningen

FC UTRECHT 1 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

An entertaining last 30 minutes saw Ruud Boymans score for Utrecht and Tjarnon Chery miss a penalty for Groningen writes Ryan O’Grady.

In all honesty the first 60 minutes weren’t worth much of a mention. The first half looked like it was going to be entertaining when Anounar Kali had a long range effort saved in the first minute but both sides lacked a cutting edge and both were unable to create many chances either. Ed Janssen the referee didn’t help either, repeatedly giving soft free-kicks and as a result the game was very stop start, although Jarchinio Antonia of Groningen was the only player to be booked in the first half. Utrecht did have another couple of half chances, one was when Nacer Barazite brought the ball down beautifully before shifting the ball onto his left foot but the shot was very weak and easily saved. The second-half chance was when Utrecht were awarded a free-kick about halfway into Groningen’s half, the ball was put in and Chris Kum tried a reverse header but the ball came off the back his neck and went over the bar.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half almost nothing happened and if it wasn’t for Utrecht’s goal then the second half might’ve been a copy of the first. The goal came from a lofted through ball from Tommy Oar which Ruud Boymans ran onto and controlled well before putting it in between the keeper’s legs to send the home fans wild. As I have just mentioned the goal was definitely the instigator of change in terms of the pace of the game. 3 minutes later Utrecht earned a free-kick in avery dangerous position just outside the box but it was wasted by Yassin Ayoub. After this Groningen fought their way back into the game, in the 65th minute a long cross eventually fell to Antonia but he overhit his pass to Chery who was unable to control it. Only 3 minutes later however Groningen were awarded a penalty and Chery stepped up to take it but it was saved brilliantly by the keeper which seemed to take the fight out of Groningen’s fightback somewhat. Their only other chance in the game fell to Danny Hoesen but his shot was deflected into the keeper’s hands. Boymans had a late chance to double his tally and Utrecht’s lead but he put his shot just over the crossbar.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 0-1 Ajax

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

FeyenoordAjax

FEYENOORD 0 – 1 AJAX

Ajax defeated Feyenoord by the single goal in this afternoon’s De Klassieker but they will have Jasper Cillessen and the woodwork to thank for the three points writes Will Burns.

Feyenoord head coach Fred Rutten must have wondered how his side was a goal down after just five minutes, when they could have so easily been in the lead. Jordy Clasie and Ruben Schaken had saw early chances hit the crossbar before Ricardo van Rhijn hit a 40-yard free-kick past the stranded Kenneth Vermeer to give Ajax the shock lead.

The Rotterdammers saw the woodwork prevent the equaliser as Sven van Beek rose above everyone from a Miquel Nelom cross. Minutes later, Jasper Cillessen pulled off a great save from Colin Kazim-Richards to remarkably keep the score at 1-0 to Ajax. Feyenoord were in full control of everything but the scoreline.

The chances were flowing for the hosts but none were easier than Colin Kazim-Richards just before the interval. After a whipping ball into the area from Jens Toornstra, the Turkish international did wonderful to control in the area and wrong-foot marker Niclas Moisander. However, the striker’s finished was a meagre effort as he dragged his shot wide from just yards out. The fans behind the goal in De Kuip all stood with their hands on their head.

The teams went into half-time with the Rotterdammers being far the better side but a goal down and the second-half was more of the same.

The Amsterdammers could truly thank Cillessen for the three points today as the Dutch international was quiet literally pulling out all the stops. After opposite number, Kenneth Vermeer showed a strong hand to deny Kolbeinn Sigthórsson at the other end, Cillessen stopped a great header from Jean-Paul Boëtius from a Luke Wilkshire free-kick.

As Feyenoord pressed, it looked likely that Rutten’s men would at least secure a point, especially when excellent work from Elvis Manu provided Mitchell te Vrede an excellent opportunity to equalise with five minutes remaining. The young striker had time to set himself up perfectly at the back post but his shot somehow stayed out via Van Rhijn and then Cillessen.

The striker grew more and more frustrated as did the raucous fans inside De Kuip when Te Vrede saw his late header tipped over the bar by the outstanding Cillessen.

Despite a massive 16 attempts on goal for the Rotterdammers, Ajax held on to win their fifth consecutive victory over their bitter rivals, which adds more pressure on Feyenoord boss Fred Rutten.

EREDIVISIE: Heracles 1-4 FC Twente

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

HeraclesFCTwente

HERACLES 1 – 4 FC TWENTE

FC Twente put in a convincing away performance to defeat bottom side Heracles, who started well, but faded, with a two minute period at the end of the second half killing the contest writes Jake Jackman.

In the opening exchanges, neither side could fashion a real clear cut chance, despite the positive intent from Heracles against a strong FC Twente side. The away side started with lots of attacking talent with the likes of Luc Castaignos, Ryo Miyaichi and Hakim Ziyech, all who can cause significant damage to opposition sides.

The first came after Ziyech played a nice forward pass to Kyle Ebecilio, who had space in the final third, but he could only fire his shot off target. Twente continued to push for the opening goal, but exceptional defending from the home side saw three promising positions from Twente prevented, with some brilliant last ditch defending. The home side then went straight up the other end, with Thomas Bruns playing a nice ball to Wout Weghorst in space, who duly went on the slot the ball past Nick Marsman.

It wasn’t long until the away side equalised, after a block fell kindly for Luc Castaignos, who finished well, a forward of his quality was never going to let a chance like that pass. Although he has always had a big reputation as a player, who had good potential, Ryo Miyaichi was continuing to waste good positions. The home side failed to retake the lead, after Rasmus Bengtsson mis-kicked, allowing Bryan Linssen to find Oussama Tannane, who fired wide from a great position.

As Heracles were preparing to go into half time level, Luc Castaignos scored his second of the afternoon as he headed home from a decent cross provided by Jesus Manuel Corona.

If this wasn’t bad enough for the home side, Twente scored again just moments later through a brilliant finish from Hakim Ziyech as Twente really started to make their quality count. It was perhaps harsh on Heracles, who played well in the first half, but it was certainly Twente who had the better chances and they made those count.

The second half started the same way as the first with very few clear cut chances as Twente looked happy to hold on to what they already had. Bryan Linssen had the first clear cut chance but his shot missed the target. Heracles were doing all of the running and the ball fell kindly for Simon Cziommer who fried straight at Nick Marsman. Despite the pressing from the home side, Twente quickly added a fourth as substitute Youness Mokhtar finished smartly after some good approach play. Iliass Bel Hassani had a late chance, but it would have counted for nothing anyway.

This was certainly a clinical performance from FC Twente and it has shown them as a dangerous side, who will cause a lot of problems this season. Their attack is very potent and they have the ability to finish in the higher positions, especially if Luc Castaignos keeps up the form he showed today. Heracles continued their disastrous start, and they still sit bottom with 0 points. They started well today, but look very vulnerable at the back, they are set to face a serious relegation fight, unless things improve.

TEAMS

HERACLES: Telgenkamp, Schenkeveld (Koenders 53), Veldmate, Engberink, Te Wierik, Bruns (Bel Hassani 68), Pelupessy, Fledderus (Cziommer 46), Linssen, Weghorst, Tannane.
