The greats of the PSV forward line

At PSV’s Philips Stadion, two prominent statues guard the main entrance. In glorious bronze, the contributions made by two Eindhoven greats is preserved forever. Coen Dillen and Willy van der Kuijlen were that influential.

The former played in excess of 400 games for PSV and, in scoring 288 goals, became a standard-bearer for a future procession of lethal strikers. The latter, known affectionately as Mr. PSV due to eighteen years of loyal service, scored an untouchable 311 goals for the club whilst eclipsing many of Dillen’s records. The rich lineage of prolific PSV goalscorers started with two legends; with Dillen in the 40s and 50s, and van der Kuijlen in the 60s and 70s. Now, as PSV search for the next great forward capable of earning a Stadion statue, it’s fitting that we explore a city and it’s enduring love of goals.

The succession of legendary PSV forwards extended from Dillen and van der Kuijlen and encompassed some of the games greatest-ever players. It’s a legacy of goalscorers which includes Romário, one of the few known men to score 1,000 career goals and to be branded a “genius” by Johan Cruyff. The vaunted Brazilian spent five years in Eindhoven, winning the affection of fans who were thrilled by his mercurial brilliance around the penalty-area. When Romário moved to Barcelona in 1993, many worried about PSV.

However, management created a new striking tandem: Ronaldo and Luc Nilis. In time, Ronaldo would play for the likes of Real Madrid and Internazionale, and win two World Cups with Brazil. However, from 1994-96, he was a raw phenom who illuminated the Eredivisie with a wide array of silky skills and incredible goals. He was lauded in Eindhoven. Nilis stayed around for six years, demonstrating himself as a complete player capable of scoring all manner of goals. In later years, he was paired with another PSV prodigy, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who wooed Lighttown with a similar variety of skill and predatory instinct. I grew-up watching Mateja Kežman. He is a player all-too-frequently derided for a difficult spell in England with Chelsea. I’ve watched a lot of football, however, and I’m still yet to see any goalscorer as good as Kežman in the early Millennium. He was untouchable in front of goal, earning the moniker Doelpuntenmachine from the adoring PSV masses. It was a privilege to watch.

The seven players mentioned combined to score 1085 goals for PSV Eindhoven. Just four of the players, namely Romário, Ronaldo, van Nistelrooy and Kežman, earned the club £55 million in transfer fees. It’s those goals, and that income, which has kept PSV relevant throughout the decades; allowed it to become a club capable of renewing itself as with more modern eras. The goals also brought trophies: PSV has twenty-one Eredivisie titles, one European Cup, and a UEFA Cup triumph. In Eindhoven, great weight is given to the currency of goals.

However, PSV is enduring its longest drought in twenty years. The club is without an Eredivisie championship since 2008; without full-time Champions League football since a similar mark. A solitary KNVB Beker and Johan Cruyff Shield is all they have won in five years. During this stretch, PSV have been noticeably devoid of that one predatory striker which once so signified their style. Sure, they have never struggled to score goals, with impressive totals in all those seasons. However, in the past half-decade, PSV have been more reliant on wide players and midfielders to score their goals; players like Jefferson Farfán, Balázs Dzsudzsák, and Dries Mertens finishing as top-scorers. What is the problem, I hear you ask, so long as PSV win?

The defence is surely more of problem, you may argue? Nevertheless, there is a fine difference between a goal-scorer and a scorer-of-goals. In order to win an Eredivisie championship, a poacher is required to rescue three points at difficult away games, to feed off scraps and earn a victory even without playing well, to breed confidence into fans and teammates alike that they always have hope. Every elite team needs a Kežman, a van Nistelrooy, a Nilis.

Do PSV currently have one? It’s difficult to assess. In 19-year old Jürgen Locadia, they have a player with potential to become such a predator. The Emmen-born forward has already demonstrated his clinical ability in the penalty area, entering PSV folklore with a 22-minute hat-trick in his Eredivisie debut last season. As reward, he was given a five-year professional contract and, with an increased role in First Team affairs, scored a further hat-trick in the KNVB Beker semi-final, in addition to netting in the final. He currently has a record of 12 goals in 26 PSV appearances, which is a tremendous return. Locadia is sensational in front of goal. He is also young. These ingredients unfortunately make him a convenient late-game substitute for Phillip Cocu at present, with the forward being used either when PSV desperately need a goal or when they’re comfortably ahead. Accordingly, until Locadia begins to play ever week, it’s difficult to furnish him with the teams main goal-scoring burden.

The player he is attempting to oust in the PSV forward line is the enigmatic Tim Matavž. When the 24-year old Slovenian arrived from Groningen on Deadline Day 2011, there was tremendous expectation; many feeling that Matavž was at the right club to really develop his game and become a force in front of goal. In a purely statistical sense, Matavž has done just that, reaching the 20-goal plateau in his first two PSV seasons, and thus far holding a record of 42 goals from 86 appearances. However, many are still skeptical as to whether Matavž is the arch-poacher who can really drive PSV to an Eredivisie crown. It’s difficult to watch Matavž at times; he seems to score wonderful, unexpected goals, yet struggle with the ‘easier’ chances. Despite his first leg goal against Milan, I’m still not entirely certain that Matavž is the man who is going to score when PSV need it the most. The fact that Cocu regularly replaces the Slovenian with Locadia late in close games substantiates this point. Matavž will likely score twenty goals per season, but the debate persists as to whether he can add his name to the list of great PSV strikers.

It’s vitally-important that PSV find a reliable source of goals this season. If they have serious Title aspirations, somebody will have to step-up and provide regular punctuation to their often-exquisite approach play. In such a demanding football city, the difference between ‘good’ and ‘great’ is eminently clear. Matavž has a long way to go before he is cast in bronze beside Dillen and van der Kuijlen. Locadia might just get there before him.

WORLD CUP: Oranje held by Estonia

ESTONIA 2 (Vassiljev 18, 57)

NETHERLANDS 2 (Robben 2, Van Persie 90+4 P)

It was an uncharacteristic performance from Louis van Gaal’s boys, as they rescued their unbeaten record in World Cup qualifying with an injury-time penalty kick to secure a 2-2 draw with underdogs Estonia.

Amkar Perm attacking midfielder Konstantin Vassiljev struck twice for the home side and looked to have sealed a memorable victory for the Estonians. However, the Dutch have previously won all six of their matches in Group D of the UEFA qualification section, but they had to rely on a controversial Robin van Persie penalty to gain a point.

Dangerman Arjen Robben broke the deadlock with his 19th goal for his country. The Bayern Munich winger curled his effort beyond the reach of goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko from inside the penalty area.

The Oranje lead only lasted 15 minutes as Vassiljev broke through a weak challenge 25 yards from goal and sent a low shot past Swansea ‘keeper Michel Vorm. The Estonian then doubled his and his teams tally with a cute lob just before the hour, as he met a perfect through ball from Joel Lindpere and lifted the ball over Vorm.

However, Manchester United hitman Robin van Persie broke Estonian hearts after winning a penalty from what appeared to be a good challenge from Raio Piiroja. The defender received a second yellow card and RVP converted the spot kick.

Tuesday sees Van Gaal’s side to have the chance to redeem themselves against Andorra, and the Dutch fans will be expecting a much improved performance.

ESTONIA vs. NETHERLANDS Preview

Header-Oranje

Before clashing on the 6th of September for the WC2014 qualification campaign, Netherlands and Estonia had already squared up in the A.LeCoq Arena 12 years ago. It’s a game that all Estonian football fans have had carved in their memories notwithstanding the final result was favorable to the visitors.

A BIT OF HISTORY

ESTONIA 2-4 NETHERLANDS (WCQ – 2nd June 2001 – A.LeCoq Arena)

First of all, it was the very first game that the Estonian national team played at the newly built stadium.

Secondly, Estonia managed to hold on a goalless draw the Dutch side for more than a hour.

Let’s remind some of those who were playing in the Dutch side: Van der Saar, Frank de Boer, Reiziger, Cocu, Hasselbaink, Kluivert and, last but not least, Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

However, this was nothing yet compared to what happened at 64’.

Estonia steals possession from the Dutch in midfield; the ball is brought back into defence; a vertical pass is sent Marko Kristal: the nr.10 sees nr.9, striker Andres Oper, attacking the space with his speed and serves him deep with one touch. The Dutch rearguard is suprised by the quick unexpected verticalization: Oper avoids one opponent, then resists to Mario Melchiot trying to disturb him; Oper is already in the box when he slams it past Van der Saar: 1-0 for Estonia!

The entire Lilleküla audience is standing up celebrating the goal: madness brings one Estonian fan to invade the pitch to reach the bunch of Estonian footballers however he’s promptly stopped by the stewards. The new stadium doesn’t have any kind of fences yet.

The Dutch players are incredulous at what just happened: they are one down with less than half an hour to go against Estonia, a football minnow.

Notwithstanding the embarassment, they will manage to pull themselves together and equalize four minutes later with Captain Frank De Boer firing a rocket at Martin Kaalma’s goal. The poweful shot is deflected by the then young defender Raio Piiroja. 1-1

However, it happens again.

76’, Kristal works out a long ball for Oper on the right flank. Oper has a lot of space to run in to catch it. When he latches onto it, Melchiot is standing on his way at the edge of the box. The nr.11 takes a look at what’s going on inside the box and sends it in on the front post where Zelinski is quicker and anticipates the Dutch defender: 2-1!

Fifteen minutes to go and Estonia is leading again!

This time it will last longer, seven minutes, as Van Nistelrooy (who subbed Hasselbaink earlier) will make it even again with a poacher’s goal.

The rest is known: in the remaining time (eight minutes plus added time) Van Nistelrooy and Kluivert will sign the Dutch comeback for a 2-4 final score.

————-

After that, Estonia haven’t managed to score against the Orange, let alone to take the lead of the game: 5-0 the return game in September 2001 and 3-0 the game last Spring in Amsterdam.

Out of that Estonian team only Andres Oper and Raio Piiroja are still active, with the latter being the captain and Oper the Estonian international topscorer of all times.

Kristal and Zelinski have both retired and they work together as coach and assistant coach at FC Levadia Talinn (Estonia’s second most-titled club) currently top of the Estonian top-flight table.

The back then coach of Estonia was a Dutchman: Arnoldus ’Arno’ Pijpers, 42 games as Estonian coach in 5 years (2000-2005), now coach at a club in Kazakhstan (FK Taraz) after working for many years within the Estonian FA to develop the youth system.

Van Gaal will be back for the second time in Lilleküla stadium: will he have a deja vu of that crazy ’white night’?

————-

ESTONIA SQUAD

Coach Tarmo Rüütli has picked up 24 men ahead of the clash with Van Gaal side.

The squad is made up mostly by footballers playing abroad with the only exceptions represented by Dmitri Kruglov, a left full-back who recently returned to Estonia (at Levadia) after a contract terminated in Russia (FC Rostov); Estonian Champion (with club Nõmme Kalju) right full-back Tihhon Śiśov and finally the midfielders Alexander Dmitrijev (Levadia Tallinn) and Martin Vunk (Sillamäe Kalev).

Defender Ragnar Klavan, is the only one playing in a European top league as he’s at his second stint with FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

Two of the 24 don’t play in Europe: Captain Raio Piiroja has signed this year for Chinese club Chengdu Blades and Joel Lindpere is earning a living at Chicago Fire in the MLS (he was at New York Red Bulls with Thierry Henry before moving to Michigan State).

Oper was not called up due to an injury to his shoulder he picked up in…a taxi: ’We were sitting with a friend in a taxi – recalls the record topscorer about the accident occurred in June – when suddenly a bus drove into us! I don’t know why it happened, maybe brakes didn’t work. Initially I just felt something weird with my shoulder, but nothing else. Later on it was more and more painful. The doctor suggested to do some x-ray: it was clear I had to go into surgery.’

With Oper ruled-out, the top-scorer available for Rüütli is midfielder Kostantin ’Kostja’ Vassiljev (15 times netting with ’sinisärk’, the blue jersey), a regular at FK Amkar Perm, Russia.

Vassiljev was the great protagonist of the enthusing ride that brought Estonia to EC2012 play-offs lost to Ireland in November 2011, the highest tip reached by the Baltic country in football.

Rising stars of the national team are the forwards Henrik Ojamaa (11 caps 0 goals, a regular at Legia Warsaw, Poland) and Henri Anier (8 caps 3 goals, recently signed by Motherwell following Ojamaa himself who spent great words for his teammate to be signed by the Scottish club).

After the successful EC2012 campaign, Tarmo Rüütli had to go thru barren times as many protagonists of his typical XI went thru injuries (Piiroja, Vassiljev, Zenjov) and still injuries are affecting his choices: Morozov, replacing the injured Piiroja as centre-back, has picked up a serious rupture of collateral ligaments (3 months out); the right flanker and midfield jolly, Sander Puri, tore an hamstring few weeks ago in an English League Two game with his side, York City FC; Tihhon Śiśov injured his ankle ligaments two days before the Europa League play-offs on board of Kalju; Piiroja himself has just returned to play. Except Morozov, the others have all been called up as Rüütli hopes to recover some of them, with Puri having the best chances of making it compared to the others.

In the last game with Latvia on the 14th of August, Rüütli fielded the following XI (substitutions in grey)

Estonia_1

Among Ojamaa and Anier, according to Estonian press, Rüütli should, at the moment, favour the latter however he never disclosed his real intentions. Truth is also that he might entrust the most experienced Zenjov as a starter. The idea of presenting a solid and experienced XI might also extend to the other lines: Kruglov might be played at left full-back in place of Teniste (as he can cover both roles on the left side) and Lindpere be given a starter on the left flank. Ahjupera is not technically endowed, however his physical qualities (196cm) make him the classical ‘tower’ helping the team to come up and opening spaces for the second striker. Kink is ready to replace Puri on the right flank. If no other injury will come on the way, this should be the most probable line-up.

10 CURIOSITIES ABOUT ESTONIAN FOOTBALL

1. The president of the Estonian FA is Mr.Aivar Pohlak. A former writer of books for children, maths and Estonian language and literature teacher, he is the ’founding father’ of modern Estonian football. Controversially, he is also the chairman of club FC Flora which has risen more than an eyebrow for the evident conflict of interests. Try google his name and you will discover his special outfit. He is also a referee of football and recently officiated a national cup game with his daughter and son-in-law as linemen and for the home team he used to play with when he was younger (FC Kuressaare).

2. Arno Piipers is not the only Dutch related to Estonian football. After him, and just before Tarmo Rüütli, another Netherlands son has been sitting on the Estonian bench: Jelle Goes, he had 13 matches as Estonian coach collecting only 2 wins and 1 draw. Today he is offspring manager at Anzhi Makachkala.

3. Other foreign coaches of Estonia have been 3 Hungarians (between the two wars) an Austrian (1930) an Icenlander (1996-1999) and a Danish (caretaker for just 8 games in 2007 before Rüütli was appointed).

4. On club level, there are strong ties between Vitesse Arnhem and FC Flora. Many players have been coming and going from one club to the other (including Raio Piiroja, 2 apppearances with Arnhem’s club). At the moment the goalkeeper Marko Meerits (grown at Flora and sold to Vitesse) has returned to Holland after a loan period back to Flora. In Flora plays the young talent Sander Van de Streek on loan from Vitesse.

5. The previous name of ’A.LeCoq Arena’, Lilleküla, comes from the area where the stadium was built which in Estonian means ’flower village’. The stadium is set between two arms of railways, one south-bound and the other east-bound. The capacity is 9,300 which can be brought to over 10,000 by adding removable stands at each bottom.

6. Ragnar Klavan has set the unbeatable record of being the first Estonian footballer to have played in the Champions League during his stint at AZ Alkmaar. It happened on the 29th of September 2009 when he came in as a substitute in Group H game against Standard Liege. It was the 2009-10 Champions League season, the one that ended up bitterly for Van Gaal in Madrid as he lost to Mourinho’s Internazionale. Just the previous season, the Dutch gaffer was Eredivisie Champion with Alkmaar before Klavan joined the club.

7. Before moving to A.LeCoq Arena, the Estonia national team home was the old stadium of the Kadriorg, the city park. Tallinn has another big stadium, Kalev Staadion, home of the oldest Estonian club: JK Tallinna Kalev. The facility is also home to folk dance festivals and Sunday flea markets during the Summer.

8. The most capped Estonian international is Martin Reim, 157 caps including the game in Lilleküla in 2001. The only active players of the top 10 of the most capped are: Andres Oper (133), Raio Piiroja (111) and Enar Jääger (95). Martin Reim is the present-day U21 coach.

9. Thanks to their successful EC2012 campaign, Estonia reached the record-breaking position of 47th in the FIFA nations ranking. 4 years earlier (2008) they were at 137th. At the moment they are 85th, ahead of the other two Baltic states (Lithuania 106, Latvia 119)

10. Estonia participated into their first UEFA/FIFA final tournament last year when they were awarded as host of the U19 EC which was won by Spain. The Estonian U19 squad didn’t make it past the group stage.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Sunday 1st September 2013

Header-EredivisieReport

WEEK 5 – Sunday 1st September 2013

After week five, PEC Zwolle still sit top even though they dropped their first points of the season as Ajax were also head by Groningen. Feyenoord seem to finally finding their stride as they romped to a 4-0 home win over Roda JC.

FC Groningen - Ajax

FC GRONINGEN 1-1 AJAX

The defending champions drew first blood halfway through the first half, when Danish midfielder Lasse Schöne fired a rocket of a shot into the bottom corner from outside the area.

The hosts looked for an equaliser and defender Eric Botteghin had a great chance to score. Ajax ‘keeper Kenneth Vermeer saved his defence with a great stop from the rising Brazilian’s defenders header from the back post.

After the break, the visitors should have made it two but Bojan, largely disappointing since arriving on loan from Barcelona, went on a jinking run past two defenders. However, instead of playing the ball to an unmarked Schöne, the Spaniard lost the ball after trying to trick his way through on goal.

It was end to end stuff, and Groningen won a corner, and when Botteghin once again saw his header saved by Vermeer, stocky striker Genero Zeefuik was in the right place at the right time to level the score.

After Bojan fluffed another opportunity, Groningen could have won the game themselves in the final minute, but Ajax were saved by the post. Sixteen-year-old Richairo Zivkovic headed on to a free Filip Kostić, but the Serbian’s shot cannoned back off the post.

Frank de Boer will be disappointed with the point as his side are yet to tatse a win away from home this season. This will only get tougher after losing Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld this weekend.

It is a case of reserved fortunes for Groningen, as they bounce back from second-rate performances against Eredivisie new boys Go Ahead Eagles and Cambuur.

AZ - Vitesse

AZ ALKMAAR 1-1 VITESSE

AZ and Vitesse struggled to entertain in the first period of the match, neither side unable to break the deadlock or trouble either goalkeeper.

Just before half-time, AZ created a chance and took it. Swedish right-back Mattias Johansson powered his way up the pitch down the right, cut inside, encroached into the area and fire a superb effort past Piet Velthuizen.

Vitesse pressed and AZ soaked up the pressure looking to attack on the counter. It backfired though as late in the game, Jonathan Reis salvaged a point for Vitesse.

With just five minutes remaining, Frank van der Struijk swung in a cross from the byline and Reis nodded home at the front post.

20130901 - PEC Zwolle 1-1 FC Utrecht

PEC ZWOLLE 1-1 FC UTRECHT

PEC Zwolle are still top of the pile in the Eredivisie but lost their 100% record as they dropped their first points in a 1-1 draw at home against FC Utrecht.

Jan Wouters side took the lead five minutes after the break with new signing Willem Janssen nodded home his first goal for his new club. A recent loan signing from FC Twente, headed home a Jens Toornstra free-kick.

Zwolle equalized in the 74th minute through Stef Nijland. Nijland, a free-transfer from PSV in the summer, finished off a nice move down the left from Jesper Drost to keep Zwolle undefeated in five games.

20130901 - Graziano Pelle, Ruben Schaken & Tonny Vilhena

FEYENOORD 4-0 RODA JC

Ronald Koeman will be a happier man tonight, after losing their first three games of the season, his Feyenoord side has now won their two matches including 4-0 demolition of Roda JC today.

A 31st minute Ruud Vormer’s spot-kick fired the home side into the lead. Meanwhile, Italian hitman Graziano Pelle continued his strong start by notching his sixth goal in five games just before the break. It was a cracker, a half-volley from the edge of the box after the Roda defence could not clear a free-kick.

Nelom Miquel made it three on 68 minutes, and it got worse for the visitors as they were reduced to ten men on 80 minutes. Henk Dijkhuizen was shown a straight red card for a needless tackle from behind on Ruben Schaken on the half-way line.

John Goossens put the icing on the cake a few minutes later with his first goal of the season, a low drive from outside the area, as Feyenoord move towards the top half of the table.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Saturday 31st August 2013

Header-EredivisieReport

WEEK 5 – Saturday 31st August 2013

PSV were held at home by new boys SC Cambuur on their big anniversary day, as Go Ahead Eagles keep flying towards the top end of the division.

FC Twente - SC Heerenveen

FC TWENTE 1-1 HEERENVEEN

FC Twente escaped with a 1-1 draw at home to Marco van Basten’s Heerenveen as Swede defender Rasmus Bengtsson struck a late equaliser.

FC Twente were in control of the majority of the game as Heerenveen, without star striker Alfred Finnbogason due to a toe injury, took the lead through midfielder Joey Van der Berg score on 64 minutes.

The draw means both sides are locked just outside the top two positions.

Heracles Almelo - ADO Den Haag

HERACLES 1-0 ADO DEN HAAG

Heracles managed to hold on to their lead this week as they beat ADO Den Haag 1-0 at home.

ADO are in the middle of a poor run, only winning one of the last five games and it was the hosts that dominated.

Australian left-back Jason Davidson got the only goal of the game on the half-hour mark with Heracles failing to add to that goal, but remaining comfortable throughout.

RKC Waalwijk - Go Ahead Eagles

RKC WAALWIJK 1-4 GO AHEAD EAGLES

Go Ahead Eagles are still soaring as Erik Falkenburg hit a hat-trick in the 4-1 defeat of RKC Waalwijk.

The former Jong Oranje international joined the Eagles on loan from AZ Alkmaar in early August and opened his account in fine style as they secured their second win of the season.

After notching two first-half goals, the 25-year-old completed his hat trick midway through the second half, while Marnix Kolder added a fourth goal from the penalty spot.

Denzel Slager pulled one back three minutes from time for Waalwijk, which has earned just one point from its last three games.

PSV - SC Cambuur

PSV 0-0 SC CAMBUUR

PSV’s anniversary celebrations were spoiled as they were held to a 0-0 home draw by newly promoted Eredivisie rivals SC Cambuur in the evening game.

The Eindhoven side were celebrating their 100th year in football, and could have gone top with a win, but Philip Cocu’s side slipped to their fourth consecutive game in all competitions without a win.

PSV had the most of possession and fired in more shots than their opponents, but a lack of accuracy cost both sides as they each only managed two on target.

PSV were eliminated from the Champions League in Wednesday’s play-off by Milan and will hope they come back from the international break reinvigorated as they ready themselves for a championship battle and a Europa League campaign.

Ajax sell Eriksen & Alderweireld

Ajax fans have endured a painful transfer window this summer, even though up to a few days ago, it looked like a successful one. Friday saw Christian Eriksen sign for Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on a £11.5m deal, Saturday morning came news that Toby Alderweireld was flying to Madrid to complete a transfer to Atletico. The Amsterdam club have made some good money on the transfers as both were set to leave on a free at the end of the season.

20130830 - Christian Eriksen Spurs

Spurs have been splashing the cash during the transfer window and have broken their own transfer record three times with the signings of Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela. Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, who was also on Liverpool’s wanted list, has joined in a deal worth £11.5m.

The Denmark international moved to Ajax in 2008 from Odense in his homeland and has since gone on to play a total of 161 games for the Eredivisie club scoring 33 times.

Eriksen, capped 37 times by his country, has enjoyed great success during his time in Amsterdam. A main player in De Boer’s reign, he won three consecutive Eredivisie league titles between 2011 and 2013. The Dane was also named Talent of the Year and Ajax’s Player of the Year in 2011, and also voted Danish Football Player of the Year, the same year.

Spurs announced the transfer on their official website: “We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Christian Eriksen.”

Eriksen added: “Everyone has followed the development of Spurs and it’s something I want to be part of.”

The purchase of Eriksen is likely to take Andre Villas-Boas’ side’s summer spending to just under £105m in this transfer window and paves the way for Gareth Bale to join Real Madrid in a world-record move.

Spanish side Atlético Madrid are hours away from finalising the transfer of Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian international has attracted interest from a number of English clubs throughout the summer, with Spurs, Newcastle, Everton and Norwich as well as Liverpool monitoring his situation at Ajax, however he has chosen to move to Spain.

Last week, Ajax had accepted a bid in the region of €5m from Spartak Moscow earlier this month but Alderweireld, 24, also turned down the move to Russia.

Atlético are able to offer the Belgian Champions League football and his signing will pave the way for Martin Demichelis to be reunited with Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City.

Diego Simeone will to sign Alderweireld to a four year contract later today and may make his debut away to Real Sociedad tomorrow evening.

As for replacements for the two stars, Ajax have plenty of options but only a few days to make the signings complete.

In midfield, Heracles’ Lerin Duarte has been linked with the defending Eredivisie champions all summer long and he looks like the favourite to fill in for Eriksen.

Frank de Boer did enquire to Chelsea about taking Marco van Ginkel on a season-long loan, but the Blues hierarchy rejected the deal immediately, as they see the Dutchman playing a strong role in their charge for the English league title.

FC Twente’s Dusan Tadic was rumoured but Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars stated that the Amsterdammers were not interested.

In defence, Ajax’s purchase of FC Utrecht’s young central defender Mike van der Hoorn in the summer, has always being mooted as Alderweireld’s replacement once he moved on.

EREDIVISIE REPORT: Friday 30th August 2013

Header-EredivisieReport

WEEK 5 – Friday 30th August 2013

Week five of the Eredivisie season began with NAC Breda and NEC Nijmegen battling to gain their first win of the season.

NAC Breda - NEC

NAC BREDA 1-1 NEC NIJMEGEN

However it was a very even game between the Eredivisie’s bottom sides finished with a deserved 1-1 draw, with new NEC coach Anton Janssen happy with the point.

After the dismissal of Alex Pastoor, following three heavy defeats a fortnight ago, NEC appointed former player Janssen as his permanent successor earlier this week. Janssen takes over from goalkeeping coach Wilfried Brookhuis, who was the cartetaker coach of last weekend’s 2-2 draw at RKC Waalwijk.

The hosts gained an early advantage after just four minutes of play. A whipping ball placed into the penalty area fell into the path of striker Rydell Poepon, who will never score an easier goal to make it 1-0.

Janssen, would have watched his new side ship five goals in their previous away game at PSV Eindhoven on the TV and the new coach would have feared the worst. But, Icelandic midfielder Victor Palsson, earned them a point with his 43rd-minute goal. It was a beautiful first-time effort after collecting Navarone Foor’s pass, chipping goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar from outside the area.

Introducing Jesús Manuel Corona…

Last week, it was announced that FC Twente had signed one of the real prospects from the world of football, his name is Jesús Manuel Corona.

The 20-year-old, 5ft 5inch right sided winger, nicknamed “El Tecatito”, signs on a free transfer from Liga MX side Monterrey after rejecting a new contract from the Mexican club last year.

The young Mexican suffered a frustrating time in his homeland with Monterrey, unable to force himself into the starting line-up in a team packed with experienced internationals. However, Corona’s opportunity did arrive during last year’s Club World Championships, where Monterrey picked up a respectable third position. Chilean international striker Humberto Suazo found himself injured before the trip to Japan, so Monterrey coach Victor Manuel Vucetich handed the youngster a chance to star.

Vucetich’s decision proved to be a great one as Corona notched two goals in four appearances and was rightly named Man-of-the-Match in a semi-final defeat to English side Chelsea. Corona showed in the tournament that he is perfect example of a pacy winger with a tremendous dribbling ability to torment full-backs down either flank. The defenders of Eredivisie must not take this tricky little dribbler lightly.

Corona has signed a four year deal at the Enschede club, but he will most probably not see that contract out.  As with every talent in the Eredivisie, Europe’s big clubs will be ready to pounce to steal the player away from the Dutch league.

EUROPA LEAGUE: Feyenoord out, AZ through

Header-EuropaLgeReport

THURSDAY 29TH & FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST

QUALIFYING PLAY-OFF – SECOND LEG

Feyenoord - Kuban Krasnodar

FEYENOORD 1-2 KUBAN KRASNODAR

Kuban win 3-1 on agg.

Ronald Koeman’s season is going from bad to worse after Feyenoord crashed out of the Europa League at the qualifying stage at the hands of Russian Premier League side Kuban Krasnodar.

Feyenoord were awarded an early penalty after just two minutes of play, when Samuel Armenteros, a recent signing from Anderlecht, was tripped over in the box. However, the usually profilic Graziano Pelle saw his spot kick saved by goalkeeper Aleksandr Belenov.

In a high-octane opening of the match, the hosts saw themselves ahead on seven minutes with Pelle, this time, finishing his chance. After being played through by midfielder Lex Immers, the Italian finished the move well for Feyenoord to draw level on aggregate.

Feyenoord’s lead was not for long, as Krasnodar equalised on 18 minutes. Another defence splitting ball saw Gheorghe Bucur sped past Daryl Janmaat, and stopping the ball on the byline, crossing for Ivelin Popov to finish with ease.

The sides went in level at half-time and just five minutes after the interval, the Russians shocked Koeman’s side with a second goal. The creator turned goalscorer as Bacur finished with a excellent volley from outside the penalty area.

The Dutch side pushed looking for a way back into the tie but failed to trouble the organised Krasnodar defence, as they saw out the win.

Feyenoord are now the third Eredivisie team to be eliminated before the group stages, not a good stat for the Dutch UEFA coefficient for future tournaments.

AZ pip Atromitos in delayed finish

AZ ALKMAAR 0-2 ATROMITOS

3-3 on agg. – AZ Alkmaar win on away goals rule

In a Europa League first, this tie was played over two different days as AZ Alkmaar advanced to the group stages. The Dutch side went through despite the 2-0 home defeat to Greek side Atromitos, they progress on away goals after the 3-1 victory in the first leg.

Inside the first minute, AZ Alkmaar found themselves down to ten men, when Marcus Henriksen was sent for a early bath for a challenge on Javier Umbides. The red card was very harsh as replays showed that there was minimal contact between the players.

The Greeks had a glorious chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty on 18 minutes. AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado, who gave away the spot-kick, redeemed himself to save the penalty from Dimitris Papadopoulos.

The Greek striker also redeemed himself by opening the scoring on 53 minutes. Just six minutes later the match was halted for safety reasons due to an electrical fire linked to the floodlighting system at the AZ Stadion.

When the game was stopped, AZ trailed 1-0 on the night but led 3-2 on aggregate. Under UEFA’s competition regulations, the match resumed on Friday morning from the point of abandonment. Thanassis Karagounis struck a second goal for the Greek visitors on 75 minutes, but despite Stefano Napoleoni hitting the woodwork late on, AZ held on to progress on away goals.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Ajax get tough draw

Header-ChampionsLgeReport

The Eredivisie defending champions Ajax have been drawn into the glamour group along with Barcelona, AC Milan and Glasgow Celtic.

20130818 - Ajax 2-1 Feyenoord

Progress from Group H will be a tough task for Frank de Boer’s side, especially after the impending departures of Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld this week.

The group is highlighted by Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, who will look to re-establish their European dominance under the new leadership of Argentine coach Gerardo Martino. It will be up to the new boss to guide the Blaugrana past Scottish champions Celtic. Neil Lennon’s side memorably upset Barca 2-1 in last season’s group stage last November with a dramatic late goal from Tony Watt.

PSV’s playoff conquers AC Milan will face Barca in a repeat of last year’s last sixteen clash, where the Spanish giants roared back from a 2-0 first leg loss to score four goals in the second leg and win 4-2 on aggregate.

The Group Stage matches will take place over the course of six matchdays beginning September 17th and concluding on December 11th. The top two teams from each Group will move on to the Round of 16, while the third place side will drop into the Europa League and the fourth placed club will be eliminated from European competition.

The Round of 16 will be played over two legs in February and March 2014, with the winners continuing on to a two-legged Quarterfinal in early April. The winners will march on to the Semifinals, which will be played in late April, before the winners head to the final at the Estadio de Luz in Lisbon, Portugal on May 24th, 2014.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFYING: AC MILAN 3-0 PSV

Header-ChampionsLgeReport

WEDNESDAY 28TH AUGUST – PLAYOFF – SECOND LEG

AC MILAN 3-0 PSV

Goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng and Mario Balotelli ensured Serie A giants AC Milan disposed of PSV Eindhoven to reach the Champions League group stages with a 4-1 aggregate win on Wednesday evening.

Philip Cocu’s men had their fair share of chances inside the packed San Siro but the Italian’s goalkeeper Christian Abbiati made a string of good saves before and after Boateng’s opener. Balotelli extended the Rossoneri’s lead early in the second period and any hopes of a comeback disappeared for the young Dutch side, when Boateng added another with only 13 minutes remaining to seal a 3-0 win on the night.

Both sides began the contest with 4-3-3 formations and spaces were hard to find in the early stages of the game. The Eredivisie side created the first opportunity when Slovenian striker Tim Matavž forced Abbiati into an early diving save with a precise header after eight minutes. Just moments later Milan went a goal ahead when Boateng found the bottom corner of Jeroen Zoet’s goal with a powerful right-foot shot from outside the area.

PSV should have been level but another sprawling save by Abbiati denied the Eindhoven side an equaliser, after the goalkeeper palmed away a superb Adam Maher volley which seemed destined to score and steal the show.

The hosts continued to threaten a second goal with Riccardo Montolivo and Stephen El Shaarawy especially going close, with a powerful shot that cannoned off the crossbar.

Milan were saved by the woodwork also after 41 minutes with a cross-cum-shot by left-abck Jetro Willems. PSV had another glorious opening to equalise immediately after the interval as a low cross from the left eluded everybody to reach the unmarked Georginio Wijnaldum at the far post but Abbiati somehow blocked the PSV captain’s close-range effort.

In the 55th minute, Milan made that Abbiati save count as the Italians went further ahead to concrete their victory. French defender Philippe Mexès headed an El Shaarawy’s corner across the goal for Balotelli to volley home.

Abbiati’s night finished with a fine save from a Stijn Schaars’s dangerous shot, and Boateng finalised the result with a precise low shot at the far post following a fine counterattack involving Balotelli and Andrea Poli.

PSV now drop into Friday’s Europa League draw as a consolation, a trophy they must be in a great chance of winning with this young powerful outfit.
