Van Rhijn commits to Ajax

Ajax right-back Ricardo van Rhijn has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The 23-year-old right-back is now slated to remain in Amsterdam until 2018.

Van Rhijn is an Ajax academy graduate, having been part of the club since 2002. With Daley Blind solidifying himself in the role of defensive midfield, and the potential transfer of Niklas Moisander looming, van Rhijn will be looked upon by Frank de Boer to provide leadership on the backline. The central defensive partnership of Joël Veltman and Stefano Denswil are young and still relatively inexperienced, however, Nick Viergever has arrived from AZ Alkmaar to lend a helping hand. The left-back position is also a spot where Ajax will suffer from a lack of experience, as the front runner for the position, Nicolai Boilesen, spent much of last season battling injuries.

Van Rhijn is already among one of the more experienced players in the projected Ajax starting eleven for this next season. He has made over 100 appearances for the first team of Ajax, according to the official website of the club.

Van Rhijn now joins Veltman, Thulani Serero and Davy Klaassen as players under contract until 2018, a very solid core for the Amsterdam club.

ADO complete Chinese takeover

Earlier this week, ADO Den Haag announced that Chinese sports promoting company ‘United Vansen International Sports’ have agreed the purchase of Eredivisie side after the deal got the go ahead from the municipality of The Hague.

Late last month, the Stadium Development Foundation (SSO), a major shareholder of the club, publicised that an agreement in principle on the acquisition of shares by Vansen. However, the municipality had to approve the deal because it has a priority share.

The Chinese company have not revealed the precise figures of the takeover, but expect to make transfers funds of up to €10 million available with European qualification the main objective.

ADO was founded in 1095 and brokers of the deal, Dong Dao have insisted that the new owners will not attempt to alter any of the club’s traditions. Talking to Xinhua, Li Chun, Dong Dao CEO said: “The purchase won’t change any attribute of ADO Den Haag, only except a more ambitious goal with a bit more financial investment.”

However, he did state that to help the club’s income over in Asia, the club may import some Chinese talent to don the green and yellow stripes: “There will be Chinese players, teams and coaches to be trained in ADO, which could make the club a symbol of Dutch football in China.

“This purchase will be good for every party, it will be good for ADO, good for the fans from both countries. It will also be good for the international image of Den Haag as a city and the Netherlands as a country,” Li added, “and good for Chinese football development.”

The brokers of the deal, Dong Dao have represented the Eredivisie before and became a major sponsor of AZ Alkmaar a few seasons ago. That deal made the company the first ever Chinese sponsor of Dutch football. The company has been appointed by the KNVB to promote world coach program all over China recently as well.

Defender tells Chelsea he’s leaving

Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt has told reporters that his future does not lay at Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old was quick to respond to the question, “Where will you be next season?” with a definitive, “It definitely won’t be Chelsea, I am done here.”

Since joining the Blues in 2007, the Dutch international has had loan spells at Newcastle, Leicester, Coventry, Wigan, and a more significant loan spell of two and a half years at Vitesse Arnhem. The agreement between the Dutch club and the London-based club has come to an end and van Aanholt says he needs to be playing more regular first team footbal at his parent club, so a move is on the cards.

Ashley Cole has just left Chelsea, and a deal for Luis Filipe appears imminent, which leave van Aanholt firmly in the cold. The defender is also aware that a move back to the Premier League is not an option at the moment, and may chose to go back to the Netherlands in order to rebuild his career following some very inconsistent years between clubs.

Despite becoming a mainstay in the Vitesse ranks, and appearing 67 times for the club, he has not been given any hope by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho that he is needed or wanted by the club. Van Aanholt is your typical Dutch left wing back and with the trend pointing towards attacking wing-backs and hybrid players on the flanks, van Aanholt could certainly be an interesting purchase if he hits the market.

He has one year to go on his Chelsea contract, and the Stamford Bridge men may want to get back some of the money they have invested in the young defender before giving him the chance of leaving on a free next summer.

EUROPA LEAGUE PREVIEW: Aberdeen vs. FC Groningen

Header-EuropaLeaguePreview

THURSDAY 17TH JULY

EUROPA LEAGUE – SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING – FIRST LEG

Aberdeen-FCGroningen

ABERDEEN vs. FC GRONINGEN

The first Dutch football calendar gets underway this Thursday night in Scotland as FC Groningen travel across the water to play Aberdeen.

Last season Aberdeen qualified for Europe for the first time since 2009, finishing in third in the Scottish Premiership, which capped off a great 2013/14, their 100th year in Scottish top flight football. To add to the great finish in the league campaign The Dons added their sixth League Cup trophy to their cabinet with a penalty shootout victory against Inverness.

The Reds are likely to line up in fluid 4-2-3-1 formation that will see Adam Rooney (five goals in the first two qualifying ties) on his own up front with Jonny Hayes, Niall McGinn and veteran Barry Robson sitting behind him. Waiting in the wings will be new signing David Goodwillie on the bench. Goodwillie, formerly of Blackburn Rovers, signed on a free transfer after been released by Rovers at the end of last season.

Manager Derek McInnes knows that the Eredivisie side will be a tough game for his side: “Groningen have a bit of pace and presence, playing a similar system to ourselves. It will be a good test for us, but it will be a good test for them as well because we’ve got better as we’ve gone along. Groningen are a bit behind us in terms of competitive matches, but we are up and running. It is good to get competitve football now and we will certainly need to be competitive in the games against Groningen.”

To read more about Aberdeen, click here to read an excellent insight from Chris Rumbles.

FC Groningen head to Pittodrie with four new signings in tow. New first team goalkeeper Sergio Padt, tricky playmaker Jarchinio Antonio and striker Danny Hoesen will all get a start in Scotland with veteran substitute goalkeeper Peter van der Vlag in reserve. Losing young prodigy Richiaro Zivkovic to Ajax would have been a blow but Hoesen and Tjaronn Chery will be ready to step up to supply the goals.

Lining up in an attacking  4-3-3, one player looking to shine will be Filip Kostic. The Serbian left winger has been rumoured to be heading out of the Euroborg all summer, ready to move onto bigger and better things, however, Kostic is still present and look to him to give English right-back Shaleum Logan a torrid time on Thursday night.

I can see the Eredivisie side being too strong for Aberdeen and goals will be scored but it will be a tight one. With Hayes and Rooney in great form, life for the Groningen back four may be difficult and central defender partnership Johan Kappelhof and Eric Botteghin will have to be a the top of their game to keep a clean sheet.

Groningen to head home with an advantage is 17/10 at Bet Victor but you may want to sit on the fence and go for the draw at 12/5.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE EREDIVISIE

The launch of Sky Sports 5 centres around Sky’s broadcasting deal to show the Eredivisie exclusively in Britain. Rupert Murdoch has secured a deal for the rights to the Dutch top flight for €1bn, which will last for the next 12 years in America, while the Sky deal on top of that will prove to be a huge financial boost for Dutch clubs. Eredivisie clubs have struggled to hold on to their star players, due to the lack of finances in the league and the fact they fall short to compete in European competitions, but the new broadcasting deals could see that change in the coming years writes Jacob Jackman.

The Eredivisie was founded in 1956. Since then, Ajax have been the most successful club, winning the title 25 times, while PSV Eindhoven are the second most decorated club, winning 18 league championships. Feyenoord, Sparta, AZ and FC Twente are the other sides who have won the Eredivisie since it was formed. In terms of European qualification, the champions qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, while the runners up qualify for the third qualification round of the competition. Then, the third placed side qualify for the Europa League play off, and fourth place for the Europa League third qualification round. The fifth to eighth placed sides compete in a play off to qualify for the Europa League second qualification round.

When it comes to relegation, the bottom placed side is automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie (second tier), while the winners of the Eerste Divisie win promotion to the Eredivisie. Then the second and third bottom sides in the top flight compete with eight sides from the Eerste Divisie for two spots in next season’s Eredivisie.

There will be a lot of excitement surrounding the launch of the new Eredivisie season, mainly due to the excellent performance from the Netherlands at the World Cup and subscribers of Sky Sports could do a lot worse than following the league this campaign. They may not have the world class clubs that the Spanish league has, but the games are a lot more exciting and quicker paced than La Liga. There is always good football on show as one of the biggest clubs in the history of football, Ajax, continue to play attractive passing football under Frank De Boer, who could be in line for a move to the Premier League in the coming years.

Also the Eredivisie has a reputation as a league which develops a lot of players for the so called bigger leagues. That was particularly evident this summer as Southampton and Newcastle United both shopped in Holland. Southampton landed the very impressive duo of Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic, while Newcastle signed Siem de Jong and Daryl Janmaat. Meanwhile, Holland World Cup star Bruno Martins Indi joined Porto and last season’s top scorer Alfreð Finnbogason left Holland to sign for Real Sociedad. It’s not unusual for there to be a large exodus of talent and the impressive academies in Holland mean that there are always youngsters keen to make their mark in the Dutch top flight.

To bring you up to date with what happened last season, Ajax won their fourth successive Eredivisie title overcoming second placed Feyenoord by four points, therefore it will be these two clubs playing in the Champions League this season. Meanwhile Twente and PSV qualified for the Europa League through finishing third and fourth respectively. Groningen won the Europa League play off, while PEC Zwolle qualified for Europe’s second competition by winning the Dutch cup. RKC Waalwijk, NEC and Roda JC were all relegated, with Willem II (champions of Eerste Divisie), FC Dordrecht and Excelsior (winners of promotion/relegation play offs) taking their place in the Dutch top flight.

Chelsea fans will be intrigued to watch more of Vitesse Arnhem, who take a lot of young players on loan through the official tie up they have with the English club. Wallace and Bertrand Traore are the two players on loan currently, but that will no doubt increase in the coming weeks. Meanwhile PSV have made some impressive moves in the transfer market, bringing in Luuk de Jong, who was brilliant during his last spell in the Eredivisie for FC Twente, while they could also bring in Steven Defour before the new season, which would be a real coup. With the likes of Jeroen Zoet, Jetro Willems, Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Maher, Memphis Depay and Jurgen Locadia already in the squad, the Eindhoven club have a great chance to push Ajax all the way this year. Last season’s runners up Feyenoord are likely to be less of a threat this season after losing several key players.

This season promises to bring a lot more excitement in the Eredivisie, with room for new exciting players to breakthrough. When it comes to the top scorer, American Aron Johannsson could be the man this season. He has all the attributes to play at a higher level, but he will have to show his consistency in front of goal for AZ before such a move comes along. Meanwhile Luuk de Jong could be a contender for the golden boot if he rediscovers the form he showed during the 2011/12 season. Luc Castaignos, Memphis Depay and possibly Bas Dost (if he does indeed join Feyenoord) will be other contenders when it comes to being top scorer. Or it could be somebody else as there are always new players breaking through in the Eredivisie.

Now the Eredivisie will be on Sky regularly, it’s certainly worth taking up the interest and getting into, due to the entertaining football that is regularly on show. Also with Louis Van Gaal and Ronald Koeman managing in the Premier League, a lot more Eredivisie talent could be coming to England in the coming years, therefore it will be useful to know about the stars of the Dutch league.

Kasper Kusk: Twente sign Tadic replacement

FC Twente finally announced the signing of highly-rated Danish midfielder Kasper Kusk from AaB Aalborg today.

The 22-year-old Denmark international has possibly the hardest task of all in the Eredivisie next season… replacing Twente’s player of the season last campaign, Dušan Tadić, who joined Premier League side Southampton last week.

Kusk arrives in Enschede after nine years in Aalborg and four seasons as a first-team regular. The young Dane played 80 times for the Superligaen side and notched 20 goals.

He plays his best football on the right wing but is also comfortable on the other flank, however he has been known to play as a striker and attacking midfielder too, due to his great finishing.

He is technically gifted with great passing and quick legs and also a bit of a free-kick specialist, so his has all the attributes to potentially be as good as Tadić was over the last two seasons for Twente.

Negatively, he can be sluggish if things are not going well for him but all in all he is a great player and no doubt the Eredivisie will improve him as a player too.

Porto sign Martins Indi – Clasie to follow?

After signing Bruno Martins Indi on a four year deal, Portuguese giants FC Porto are now said to be interested in acquiring the services of Feyenoord midfielder Jordy Clasie.

With the Dutch club looking more likely to lose Stefan de Vrij, and Daryl Janmaat, Graziano Pelle along with Martins Indi already gone, in such a short space of time, they are in no hurry to part ways with the holding midfielder. Clasie’s agent has spoken but only to confirm that there are clubs interested in his client, but no concrete offer has been received by Feyenoord.

Defender Martins Indi today signed a four year contract with Porto, settling on of the most anticipated transfers of the summer, for a 7.7million fee.

Martins Indi told VI.nl: “This feels like the right time to leave, I have played over a hundred games for the club and played in my first World Cup. I have said from the start that I hoped that if I ever make the next step in my career that it would be for better for I or the club. Feyenoord have received great financial benefit for me while I’m looking forward to a new challenge in Portugal. “

In regards to Jordy Clasie, Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel, has said in De Telegraaf that, “With Jordy there is less pressure to leave, he is happy at Feyenoord and we would definitely not want to lose him.” One of the main objectives this summer for Van Geel was to make Feyenoord financially more stable and he is currently doing that with two big sales, so the club are in no way being held to ransom by their own bank account. Although, relations between the club are good seeing as Porto have already signed ex-Feyenoord man Bruno Martins Indi recently.

In so far as other players are concerned, this may not be the case. Van Geel admitted that players like Stefan de Vrij, who only has one year left on his contract, may be be sold if the right offer comes along. Clasie’s contract runs until the summer of 2018 which gives the club a little more control over the matter when an offers comes in.

The 23-year-old made his debut for Oranje in 2012 and has since represented his country on 10 occasions, the latest as a substitute in the semi-final defeat to Argentina in World Cup 2014. Clasie is your typical Dutch defensive midfielder, who has no gaping holes in any area of his game. He enjoys when the ball is at his feet and can defend capably. Porto are certainly in the market for a defensive midfielder, and it appears Clasie can be the man to fill that role, if they can only convince Martin van Geel that the price is right.

Introducing Daryl Janmaat – Newcastle’s new signing

Newcastle United has signed a fourth Dutchman to their ranks with Daryl Janmaat joining from Feyenoord for a reported £5m. But Geordies may be asking, who is Daryl Janmaat, well… Will Burns reveals all.

FACTFILE

– Janmaat was born on 22nd July 1989 in a small town called Leidschendam in the south of the Netherlands.

– As a child, he played in the Feyenoord Academy till he was a C-Junior (age 13/14) but in 2007, he was later released after not proving himself sufficiently.

– He was signed up by ADO Den Haag and made his full debut in 2007 against FC Zwolle, he went on to score twice in 25 appearances.

– At the end of that season, Heerenveen signed Janmaat to a four-year deal and he appeared in 84 games for the Friesland club.

– He eventually returned to Rotterdam in the summer of 2012 and starred in 63 games over the last two seasons for Feyenoord.

– At time of writing, he has earned 19 international caps and recently starred in four of the Dutch’s games in the World Cup campaign in Brazil.

WHAT DOES JANMAAT BRING TO THE TOON?

Janmaat is an attacking right-back that Toon fans will notice instantly that he is a similar player to the outgoing Mathieu Debuchy. The 24-year-old (25 next week) always has the desire to surge forward, and will look to overlap the winger or cut inside to look to play the best ball possible.

However, unlike most forward thinking full-backs, Janmaat can cover well in defence. His great pace helps him catch the opposition if the possession has been lost, and he has been known to slide in a great recovery tackle to halt tricky playmakers in their stride.

If needed, he is also quite capable in the air to cut out those long balls. He is physically strong, so he should cope well with the hustle and bustle of the Premier League and keep the ball when battling shoulder to shoulder with the opposition’s winger.

Attacking is where the Magpies will see the benefits of Janmaat. Last season for Feyenoord, he created 36 chances for Feyenoord, in which five of them became assists and as well as notching twice in 40 appearances.

A fantastic defender he is not, although he is solid and very reliable and if a partnership is created a cautious right wide man, we could see a successful career on Tyneside.

QPR agree to sign Ajax striker

QPR have agreed to sign Icelandic footballer, Kolbeinn Sigthórsson, from Ajax. The fee believed to be in the region of £5 million for the 24 year old. It is believed that Harry Redknapp has offered  Sigthórsson a contract and is waiting to hear back from him.

Sigthórsson has played for Ajax since signing from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2011, and has appeared for the club 59 times scoring 24 goals during that span. The Icelandic international has also played for his country 23 times scoring 15 goals.

Earlier in his career, there was talk of interest from Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, but an ankle injury in 2011 slowed down his progress. What QPR will be receiving in the deal is an out-and-out goalscorer with speed, skill and strength that will certainly stand to him in the England’s Premier League.

Ajax also lost another striker, their club captain, Siem de Jong to Newcastle earlier in the transfer window. Although the Amsterdam-based club are not unfamiliar to losing their star players, the loss of two of their star strikers during a hectic summer window will be tough. The two men accounted for 17 goals between them last season, with only Davy Klaassen equalling Sigthórsson 10 goal haul.

Ajax manager Frank de Boer coach did state last season that teams should keep away from Klaassen and Joel Veltman, expecting them to be the targets of plenty of transfer attention, he never mentioned de Jong or Sigthórsson and it appears teams heeded his warning.

While not being technically gifted, the man who is set to become Harry Redknapp’s latest signing has quite a good eye for goal and is an excellent finisher. He would be joining at team that still boasts Loic Remy, Charlie Austin, Junior Hoilett and Bobby Zamora and Kevin Doyle, although Zamora is still to sign a new contract with the club and Remy has been linked heavily with a move away. QPR were relegated, having finished last, during the 2012/13 campaign of the English Premier League with the least amount of goals scored, a paltry 30, which was 13 goals behind their closest rivals.

Sigthórsson would be looking to follow the success of his countryman, Eidur Gudjohnsen, who excelled during his time with Chelsea, and the comparisons will not be slow to roll in. A move for Sigthórsson to a different league at this point of his career might be good thing and if he can hit the ground running, QPR fans will be signing his name from the terraces in no time at all.

EUROPA LEAGUE: What can Groningen expect from Aberdeen?

Header-EuropaLeaguePreview

This Thursday, FC Groningen travel to Scotland to face Premiership side Aberdeen in the UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round First Leg. Total Dutch Football asked Aberdeen fan Chris Rumbles, to give us a rundown on what The Dons are all about.

BRIEF HISTORY

Despite a multitude of links to the Netherlands via former players and managers, this will be only the second time Aberdeen has faced Dutch opposition in Europe. The Dons previous Eredivisie encounter was a 2-2 aggregate loss to Feyenoord in the 1987/1988 UEFA Cup Second Round, a tie that came shortly before Aberdeen’s influx of players from the Netherlands that included the signings of Paul Mason and Theo ten Caat, both from FC Groningen. Since the club’s halcyon European days in the 80s (excluding the Feyenoord result of course), success at both domestic and European level has been a rarity. Derek McInnes’ first full season in charge as manager in 2013/2014 was a fruitful one that served as a reminder of the potential of the club. The Pittodrie side’s victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the League Cup Final in March put an end to the club’s twenty-year long trophy drought, and in an instant Derek McInnes’ side reinstated a sense of footballing pride in the North-East of Scotland. To borrow a phrase from the music world, Aberdeen is now preparing for that difficult second album.

THE TEAM

When the outgoing Craig Brown claimed he had left his successor Derek McInnes a ‘legacy’, many baulked at the notion. But one shouldn’t forget that club captain Russell Anderson, defensive partner Mark Reynolds, tricky winger Jonny Hayes, and Aberdeen’s talisman, Niall McGinn, were all Brown signings who were integral to last season’s achievements. Those four are part of a strong starting eleven that typically sets up in a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation that sees the three supporting the lone striker usually interchanging. The midfield can also be flattened to a five or a four with an attacking midfielder depending on the opposition.

Goalkeeper Jamie Langfield is now in his tenth season with the club and last season was potentially the 34-year-old’s best yet. Though capable of the calamitous as much as miraculous, Langfield has cut out many of the major errors that have punctuated his Pittodrie career, earning 15 league clean-sheets out of 38 fixtures last season to take his overall tally in Scotland’s top-flight to 102. Contributing to Langfield’s shutout record in recent times has been the dependable centre-half partnership of Russell Anderson and Mark Reynolds. Anderson’s vast experience coupled with Reynold’s pace and reading of the game, make up one of Scotland’s best defensive pairings. The permanent signing of Shaleum Logan this summer following a highly successful six month loan spell from Brentford will undoubtedly prove to be an astute one. The English right-back has given Aberdeen fans something they have been crying out for years: a genuine fullback. The left flank however remains one of Aberdeen’s real weaknesses. Centre-half Andy Considine and winger Jonny Hayes both filled in for the matches against FK Daugava Riga in the absence of the injured Clark Robertson. Even with Robertson fit again, his relative inexperience renders the left-back position a weakness which most fans believe is a transfer priority.

Last summer’s signings of Willo Flood and Barry Robson; have given the Dandies’ midfield a new lease of life. The addition of Flood in particular has been pivotal to the Dons injecting an energy and tenacity into midfield that had, until then, been lacking. Flood has been described by his manager as the ‘heartbeat’ of the Aberdeen team; testament to the diminutive Dubliner’s duty of disrupting the opposition’s rhythm and catalysing Aberdeen’s. Alongside Flood in central midfield is usually Ryan Jack, though Barry Robson can often partner his former Dundee United, Celtic, and Middlesbrough colleague depending on other personnel. Jack’s deep-lying midfield role is a quiet but often effective one, dictating play while giving others license to roam forward. Robson, meanwhile, provides a level of nous and vision from his favoured central position as well as from the right. His arrival at the club has seen the Dons become a real threat from set-pieces thanks to the 35-year-old’s pinpoint accuracy. From the bench, Nicky Low and Cammy Smith can also provide urgency and skill around midfield in equal measure, despite their inexperience.

Of the Dons forward contingent, Jonny Hayes is undoubtedly in the best form at the time of writing. Hayes set-up three and scored one across the two–legged affair with FK Daugava Riga. His injury in Riga will be a concern to an Aberdeen side already bereft of options on the left-side. Another potential absentee for the Groningen tie is Peter Pawlett. No stranger to the treatment table, Pawlett gave his footballing career a much-needed shot in the arm last season with a host of dazzling performances that culminated in his first Scotland call-up in May. Pawlett provides Aberdeen with pace and a focus on one thing: attacking. His seven goals last season were a significant improvement on his 1 other Aberdeen goal scored over the previous five seasons.

Two players who have found the net for Aberdeen on a more regular basis are Niall McGinn and Adam Rooney. Signed as an out-and-out striker, McGinn’s first two seasons at Aberdeen have seen the Northern Ireland international score 35 goals in 84 games. He is, in every sense, Aberdeen’s number ten. Full of creativity and skill, McGinn’s role has altered since his first season under Brown, but even in a wider role last season he still finished top scorer with 14 goals. That number is also the total number of goals McGinn’s fellow Irishman Adam Rooney has scored since joining the Dons in January from Oldham Athletic, including five of Aberdeen’s eight goals against FK Daugava Riga. His performance in the away leg last week typified what he offers Aberdeen: a penalty-box striker with real presence. Brought into challenge, or possibly complement Rooney, is recent signing David Goodwillie. The striker’s free transfer to Aberdeen comes after a barren three-year spell with Blackburn Rovers that promised so much after a multi-million pound move from Dundee United. Goodwillie’s chequered off-the-field past is perhaps reflected in the length of the contract, but the three-times capped Scotland player will be hoping his latent talent will emerge to prove any doubters wrong.

The post-match scenes that followed Aberdeen and FC Groningen’s last competitive matches of the past season could not have been further apart; the Dons were crestfallen as Motherwell beat them with the last kick of the game, forsaking second spot to their opponents on the day. FC Groningen, meanwhile, celebrated after they dismantled AZ 3-0 in the Europa League play-off, providing a return to European football following a seven year absence. Yet despite these contrasting fortunes, it might just be the Dons who enter the tie the more confident of the two with the extra qualifying round bolstering both their match sharpness and experience ahead of what is set to be a stern test for both teams. It is a tie Dons supporters will go into with realistic, rather than quixotic, hopes.

Van Gaal and RVP on their Man Utd future

As the curtain came down on World Cup 2014, Louis van Gaal and his captain Robin van Persie were asked several questions about their return to Manchester United among other things following their 3-0 defeat of hosts Brazil in the third place play-off.

While the tournament became as much about Ron Vlaar’s defending and Louis van Gaal’s tactics as it did about the individual brilliance of Neymar and Messi, almost every player that had a good game for the Dutch was in one way or another linked with a move to Manchester. Stefan de Vrij, Daryl Janmaat, Daley Blind, Nigel de Jong and Arjen Robben have all been linked with a summer move, and while we appreciate the fact that you can disregard most of it, some of the speculation might have foundation in something real.

While van Gaal departs his role as head coach of the Netherlands, the time has come for Gus Hiddink to replace one of the most popular men in Dutch footballing memory.  “I have a special bond with him,” said Robben. “He is the most important coach in my career. After the match he did ask me to come to Manchester.”

While van Gaal did nothing to stave off any further speculation with a “he is always welcome” quote, it doesn’t seem likely that an aging Robben would be willing to change his life in Germany for a few short years in Manchester, although his form during the World Cup might suggest he has a more than just a few years left yet.

Robin van Persie, who immediately went to the stand and gave his bronze medal to an eccentric Dutch fan, went on to throw further fuel on the transfer fire with some cryptic messages about possible future Manchester United signings.

He grinned when pressed by journalists and replied with a grin, I’ll admit that I know a little bit more than you sometimes, but I can’t say anything!”. This would suggest that there are more signings on the way, and also shows how close a bond Van Gaal and his captain Van Persie have.

Louis van Gaal’s arrival into the Premier League is being looked upon as a challenge by many of his peers, as he is widely renowned as one of the most tactically brilliant coaches there is. Along with Ronald Koeman, who takes over Southampton, and whoever Van Gaal brings with him from the Dutch squad, the growing Dutch connection in the Premier League will benefit fans from all walks.

Two days off is all Van Gaal requested before flying to the USA with his new squad. “I hope the group in Manchester will become like this one. We have to sing from the same hymnsheet.” said van Gaal about his new role at Manchester United.

“I hope at Manchester United I can do my best. I will do my best. Whether that’s enough for the fans I will wait and see, but I genuinely hope that will be the case.”

It was not enough to win the World Cup for the Netherlands, but it was certainly enough to convince fans of Netherlands and Manchester United that Van Gaal is a fine coach with plenty of ideas left unshared, and whoever has the good fortune to have him as a coach will benefit.

Feyenoord forced to wait for Dost

New Feyenoord head coach Fred Rutten would love to have Bas Dost sign as a replacement for the outgoing top scorer Graziano Pellè who joined Southampton yesterday.

However, a chain of recruitment dealings is delaying Dost’s transfer from Wolfsburg to Rotterdam, as the Bundesliga side are waiting to get the all clear to sign a replacement for the Dutchman.

Wolfsburg have enquired to Chelsea for the availability of young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku and until they get a decision from the London club, they will not allow the Dost negotiations take place.

Feyenoord are set to start a Champions League qualification campaign next month and are heavily dismantled from last year’s squad. Rutten has a big job at hand with talisman Pellè already left and Bruno Martins Indi is set to join Portuguese giants FC Porto in a €9m deal, already agreed during the World Cup. With rumours of the Rotterdam club ready to receive offers for Daryl Janmaat, Stefan de Vrij and Jordy Clasie also, Rutten and technical director Martin van Geel could have a massive rebuild to do if he wishes to challenge for the Eredivisie championship this coming season.

Dost would be a great start and welcome addition up front. The 25-year-old has notched 12 goals in 45 appearances for Die Wölfe and at 6ft 4 inches could fill that void that Pellè has left as the big guy in attack. Before heading over to Germany, Dost had a very successful two seasons at Heerenveen under Marco van Basten. The striker managed to find the net 45 times in 66 games before landing a €7m transfer over to Germany.

If Feyenoord can divert any bids for any more of their stars and invest in Dost, the Rotterdam side may be prepared to push rivals Ajax and PSV to the limit once again  this year.

Van Gaal and the Dutch end on a high

BRAZIL 0-3 NETHERLANDS

“We can look back at a very successful tournament, I’m proud of my players.” – Louis Van Gaal, Netherlands Coach

The Oranje’s unforeseen successful campaign ended last night with a dominating 3-0 victory over hosts Brazil. At the end of the game, the Brazilian fans loudly greeted the Dutch players after they received the third-place medals, applauding on their feet, while their team, Brazil got booed off.

Van Gaal has done a wonderful job and lead this unfancied Dutch side to a World Cup campaign that saw them undefeated throughout, having only lost to Argentina on penalties in the semis. After finishing second in 2010, the third place is the best position for the Netherlands since their runner-up medals in 1974 and 1978. The Brazilians had records of their own, conceding 14 goals in the tournament, the most ever for the team. In addition, tonight’s defeat was the first time since 1940 that Brazil lost two consecutive competitive games on home soil.

Van Gaal’s men got off to a dream start when Brazil captain Thiago Silva pulled down a sprinting Arjen Robben in the area after just 90 seconds of play. Robin Van Persie superbly converted the spot-kick. Within 16 minutes it was two.

Ajax left-back Daley Blind capitalised on defender David Luiz’s poor headed clearance and Blind had time to set himself up perfectly to fire home. It was another example of schoolboy defending from the Brazilians, which had been horribly unveiled against the Germans on Tuesday.

After some good work from Feyenoord right-back Daryl Janmaat, PSV attacking midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum completed the win in stoppage time.

This was a fitting end to the tenure of Louis van Gaal who now leaves for Manchester United. While Guus Hiddink will now be ready to hop into the Dutch hotseat, ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

For the future of Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari and his players is unknown.
