Ron Jans has big game experience as he leads his side into yet another final searching for his third trophy in just over twelve months as PEC Zwolle face FC Groningen in the KNVB Beker showdown at De Kuip. Looking to make a profit from the match, Will Burns discusses on what bets show the most value this coming Sunday afternoon in Rotterdam.

Zwolle can thank playmaker Jesper Drost for yet another successful season. The team currently sits in seventh in the Europa League playoff positions and the 22-year-old has been involved in more goals during this season’s Eredivisie campaign than any other player in the squad, notching eight goals with seven assists.

Attacking midfielder Stef Nijland, whom Jans has employed as a striker for part of the season, is the team’s top scorer on 11 goals. Czech international Tomas Necid is joint second with Drost on eight goals apiece.

Just below them in eighth is Sunday’s opposition, Edwin van der Looi’s FC Groningen. The Pride of the North are undefeated in the last six games which has helped sit on the edge of the playoffs themselves, however if they were to lose on Sunday, they would enter in place of Zwolle, who would qualify automatically for the tournament outright.

Van der Looi has relied heavily on Tjaronn Chery and Michael de Leeuw for goals this season, with both attackers top the tally charts on 14 each. Zwolle will also have to be aware of the aerial threat of Brazilian centre-back Eric Botteghin, who has headed three goals this term and can be a real hazard at attacking set-pieces.

In an ironic twist, Zwolle and Groningen meet next weekend in the penultimate group of the games in the Eredivisie season.

MATCH ODDS

Zwolle just have a knack of coming up big in the big games and after defeating the mighty Ajax 5-1 in last year’s final, Jans’ side will be hopeful of retaining the trophy and at a handsome 31/20 that looks a great bet at Bet Victor. Groningen are just outside that at 17/20 with the draw on 90 minutes valued at 12/5.

One thing for sure, looking at the goals markets, this game should see the goalkeepers tested often. Zwolle have only kept one clean sheet in their last 12 matches, with Groningen going one better with two shutouts in the same amount of games. On that note, Both Teams to Score is coming in at a decent 4/6. If your feeling really lucky why not combine Zwolle and BTTS for a massive 19/5.

Earlier this month, the draw for the first and second rounds of the KNVB Beker was made. Here’s a quick rundown of those fixtures. Can PEC Zwolle defend the trophy after clinching it last season for the first time in their history?

The second round sees the big boys from the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie join the competition. Defending champions PEC Zwolle will play host to FC Oss, who had a disappointing Eerste Divisie campaign last year, finishing 19th in the twenty team league. Zwolle of course Runners-up Ajax will have an easy trip to either vv Noordwijk or JOS Watergraafsmeer who clash in the first round. KNVB Beker Final: Ajax find the 5-1 defeat hard to Zwolle

Sunday was an amazing day for PEC Zwolle’s fans across the country as they humilated Frank de Boer’s Ajax to a 5-1 thumping to clinch their first ever major trophy in Dutch football. However, the result proved to be not the only fireworks of the afternoon.

The final at the De Kuip had to be temporarily stopped due to the troublesome minority of Ajax fans that threw explosives onto the pitch.

Play was suspended after the opening seconds when Zwolle’s first attack into the Ajax’s penalty area was greeted with the raining down of smoke bombs thrown by the Ajax supporters. Rotterdam police stated 19 fans were arrested prior the kick-off for bad behaviour and carrying fireworks and other explosives.

The fireworks damaged the pitch and burnt advertising boards twice delay the play despite their own players and coaches protesting to the supporters. Match officials sent the players back to the dressing room with Ajax legend Edwin van der Sar marching on the pitch with a microphone and pleaded with fans. “Do not throw fireworks on the pitch, it’s dangerous,” Van der Sar said. “If it happens again, the match is abandoned.”

Just after play was re-started Ricardo van Rhijn gave the Amsterdammers the lead after just three minutes with a rocket of his own. Zwolle failed to fully clear a corner and the ball fell perfectly to the full-back to smash home a first time shot from 35 yards into the net off the underside of the cross bar.

After the goal, the chaos resumed and the play was once again halted by the unruly Ajax fireworks being thrown onto the pitch. The game was not restarted for almost thirty minutes later when Zwolle showed real character to recover from Ajax’s early opener to win their first ever piece of silverware.

Minutes after restarting the game young New Zealand international Ryan Thomas turned Van Rhijn in the area and forced an effort towards goal. The Kiwi’s shot took a wicked deflection past Kenneth Vermeer in the Ajax goal to level the game up on eight minutes.

The 19 year old winger was in a dream world just four minutes later as he notched a second to take his side into the lead. Thomas smashed home on the rebound giving Vermeer no chance after a Maikel van der Werff free-kick cannoned back of the post. The disgraced Ajax fans behind the goal failed to celebrate the quick fire double by the overwhelming underdogs with such a great blaze as Van Rhijn’s goal.

Guyon Fernandez, on-loan from the host club Feyenoord, then broke the Ajax offside trap to race through on goal after 22 minutes to add a third with ease.

On 34 minutes, perhaps the Ajax fans had wished they have preserved some fireworks to get the game halted as Zwolle created more fireworks on the pitch and killed the tie off and make it 4-1. Zwolle captain Bram van Polen whipped in a cross that was met by the head of Fernandez for the fourth. The striker rose above Niclas Moisander to head past Vermeer and the Zwolle supporters were starting to realise the dream was a reality.

The soon-to-be Eredivisie champions have been playing poorly for months but grinding out results to keep their status atop of the division. Sunday proved that they were totally outclassed by a side sitting mid-table in that same league and Zwolle fully deserved their fifth and final goal five minutes after the half-time break.

Van Polen got himself on the scoresheet to hammer the final nail into Ajax’s coffin firing home from a corner. Zwolle and manager Ron Jans were awarded the trophy and took home the spoils as Ajax were sent out of Rotterdam with their tails firmly in-between their legs.

Ron Jans and Frank de Boer lead their teams out at De Kuip later this afternoon competing for the first trophy of the Dutch football season. Winning the KNVB Beker gives Ajax a domestic double after virtually wrapping up the Eredivisie championship last weekend. For Zwolle, this could prove to be the day that they lift their first ever cup.

This could be third time lucky for the underdogs, PEC Zwolle, as the Blauwvingers have been runners-up twice in this competition in 1928 and 1977. Ron Jans heads to Rotterdam without Aussie defender Trent Sainsbury due to a knee injury, and goalkeeper Kevin Begois misses out with an ankle problem. Denis Mahmudov is also an absentee with a hamstring strain while Leroy Labelle will face a late fitness test.

Ajax are without striking duo Viktor Fischer and Siem de Jong who have been ruled out for the rest of the season. Ricardo Van Rhijn and Daley Blind were suspended for last weekend’s 3-2 win over ADO Den Haag, but will naturally return to the starting line-up today. Their return will come to the expense of young duo Jairo Riedewald and Kenny Tete. First choice central defender Joël Veltman is suspended and his spot will be filled by Mike van der Hoorn.

This game promises goals as Ajax should assert their dominance, however, in this one-off game Zwolle will be fired up and will strive to battle against the occasion as well as their superior opponents.

Obviously, Ajax hold a superior record in meetings against today’s opponents. The Amsterdammers are unbeaten in the last eight prior encounters winning seven and drawn one. That draw came in February in their most recent meeting and on that occasion, Zwolle striker Guyon Fernandez netted a late first-half goal which cancelled out Davy Klaassen’s opener to ensure the home side took a share of the spoils.

Nevertheless, despite the draw, Ajax will be the definite favourites for today’s final and should claim their 19th KNVB Beker crown.

For our best bet, Bet Victor offers 19/10 for Ajax to win with both teams scoring. This game will be open and produce many chances and with Veltman missing through injury, Zwolle will have plenty of opportunities to grabs goals.

KNVB Beker Semi Final: Vermeer & Schone takes Ajax through

Ajax will face PEC Zwolle in Rotterdam on the 20th of April in the KNVB Beker final after narrowly defeating holders AZ Alkmaar tonight. It was a game with some strange refereeing decisions, but Frank de Boer can thank the heroics of goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer for the victory.

Frank de Boer’s side should have opened the scoring after twenty minutes, but AZ’s goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado stopped Daley Blind from point blank range in the area to send the AFAS Stadion into raptures. The Costa Rican stopper has had a great season and will be lining up against Italy, Uruguay and England in the World Cup finals in June.

Joël Veltman was dismissed on 33 minutes after his second bookable offence occurred within a minute of receiving his first. Referee Pol van Boekel awarded the first yellow for a trip on Roy Beerens but the second yellow nearly punished Ajax further than being reduced to ten men.

Veltman tugged on Victor Elm’s shirt in the area and Van Boekel pointed straight to the spot and sent the Ajax defender off. For the second consecutive game, American striker Aron Jóhannsson missed the spot-kick with goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer saving with ease.

At the break, Ajax made a change with Stefano Denswil slotting in at centre-back replacing Nicolas Boilesen with Blind sitting in at left-back. Within a minute of restart, Ajax found themselves on level terms with the number of players on each side and a goal up.

Swedish full-back Mattias Johansson was sent for an early bath after receiving his second yellow tripping up Lesley de Sa. Video replays showed that De Sa had indeed tripped over his own feet and AZ were unfairly reduced to ten. Danish midfielder Lasse Schöne stepped up and curled in the free-kick with great precision.

As the second half progressed, AZ started to press but attempt after attempt was thwarted by Vermeer to help his side through to the final. This was the 100th win for Ajax with Frank de Boer as the manager and he will lead his side to De Kuip on 20th April in the final. Due to the likelihood of Ajax qualifying for the Champions League, as PEC Zwolle have reached the KNVB Beker final, this almost guarantees them entry in the UEFA Europa League next season.

KNVB Beker Semi Final: Blunder gives Zwolle cup final

PEC Zwolle are through to their first KNVB Beker final for 37 years after a lucky goal gave them a 2-1 win over NEC Nijmegen.

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark from Jesper Drost. After the NEC failed to clear their lines, Drost collected the ball just outside the area and scuffed a low drive towards goal. The ball took a slight deflection and although the shot did not hold much power it was too much for Dennis Gentenaar to stop.

Six minutes before the break, the visitors were level. Club captain Ryan Koolwijk lofted a free-kick into the area from deep on the right wing. English striker Michael Higdon, as always, won the header which was smashed home with an acrobatic volley from Kevin Conboy. The midfielder dived into the ground ala Jurgen Klinsmann to celebrate.

After an even second half, Zwolle regained the lead with nine minutes courtesy of a terrible goalkeeping error from Gentenaar. In the wet conditions, Maikel van der Werff launched a long range effort towards goal that was hit straight at the keeper. Unfortunately, the shot bounced in front of the stopper and the ball squirmed under Gentenaar’s elbow and trickled over the line.

Zwolle now await the winner of AZ vs. Ajax tomorrow night to see who stands between them and their first ever KNVB Beker and their first major trophy in Dutch football.

KNVB Beker Quarter-Finals Report – Final four decided

The semi-finalists have been determines tonight, with PEC Zwolle, NEC Nijmegen and Ajax joining defending champions AZ Alkmaar in the final four.

Wednesday 22nd January

PEC ZWOLLE 5-1 JVC CUIJK

PEC Zwolle hit Topklasse side JVC Cuijk with a 5-1 scoreline that could have been a lot more if Ron Jans’ side had finished their chances.

Dominating from the kick off, Zwolle were ahead inside three minutes. Two defenders got on the scoresheet for the Eredivisie side. Left-back Bart van Hintum curled home in a free kick from the edge of the area and central defender Maikel van der Werff doubled the lead in the 16th minute.

Joris van Gerwen made it three on 19 minutes and Zwolle took their foot off the gas for the remainder of the first half.

On the hour mark, Macedonian striker Denis Mahmudov got the fourth and fifth goals with Kevin van Veen’s consulation goal sandwiched in between.

NEC NIJMEGEN 1-0 FC UTRECHT

Struggling in the Eredivisie, NEC Nijmegen are into the final four of the Dutch cup with a close 1-0 win at home to FC Utrecht.

The only goal of the game came after just seven minutes when Marnick Vermijl (on loan from Manchester United) met a Søren Rieks ball from the right wing and the Belgian slid the ball home.

AJAX 3-1 FEYENOORD

Ajax are favourites to lift their 19th KNVB Beker after disposing of Feyenoord 3-1 at the Amsterdam Arena this evening.

The visitors took the lead after just six minutes, winger Jean-Paul Boëtius the goalscorer. After Lex Immers played Tonny Vilhena through on goal, recalled Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer rushed out and totally mistimed his challenge on Vilhena. The young Feyenoord playmaker attempted to chip the ‘keeper but the ball did not have enough pace to creep over the line, so Boëtius arrived to poke home.

Young Danish forward Viktor Fischer notched the equaliser on 34 minutes after a beautiful defence splitting ball from Daley Blind. The ball through played Fischer onside and one-on-one with Erwin Mulder, the Dane chipped the goalkeeper which allowed Daryl Janmaat to get back to challenge. Fischer persisted and eventually placed the ball home before Mulder got back on his line.

Bojan Krcic nodded home a second for Ajax on 68 minutes after Mulder had parried a Lasse Schöne header from Blind’s cross from the left. South African midfielder Thulani Serero grabbed a third in injury time to cement the win for the Amsterdammers.

KNVB Beker Quarter-Finals Report – AZ advance

Dick Advocaat’s men advance in a controversial game that saw Roda’s Krisztián Németh sent off for barging into the referee. The Hungarian international clashed with referee Serdar Gözübüyük after the official’s deemed that the Hungarian striker had dived in the box on 57 minutes.

Current KNVB Beker holders AZ took the lead in fortunate fashion, Roy Beerens whipped in a corner on 31 minutes and after Jan Wuytens flicked the ball towards goal, the effort bounced onto the arm of Bart Biemens and past goalkeeper Filip Kurto.

Jon Dahl Tomasson must have rallied the team up as they blasted out of the blocks at the start of the second half but before they could get back into the game, in the 57th minute, Németh was sent off. It was an insane act by the striker that did not help the cause.

After arguments between players and Németh was finally removed from the pitch, which lead to AZ doubled their advantage just a minute later. Viktor Elm flicked on a long ball from the defence into the path of Aron Johansson who calmly finished and sent AZ into the semi-finals.

KNVB BEKER Second Round Report

Just the two shock results in the second round of the Dutch cup (the KNVB Beker), as amutuer side Capelle handed Eerste Divisie team Almere City a 1-0 defeat to set up a tie with the Eredivisie’s FC Groningen in the Third Round draw. Meanwhile, Excelsior ’31 took Willem II to extra-time and turned the pro side over 2-1.

The second round began on Tuesday with the big shock coming late that afternoon. Topklasse side Capelle saw off Almere with Marvin Strik scoring the only goal in extra time.

In an all-Eredivisie tie, Heracles overcame RKC Waalwijk in extra-time with a Thomas Bruns goal.

NEC Nijmegen eased into the next round as they hammered Hoofdklasse side Harkemase Boys 8-0 with Cristoph Hemlein netting a hat-trick. The other goals were netted by Navarone Foor, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Samuel Štefánik and a Jakob Jantscher double.

SC Cambuur smashed Katwijk 6-1 with Kevin Brands, Paco Van Moorsel, Martijn Barto, Marcel Ritzmaier, Ramon Leeuwin and Marlon Pereira all netting for the Eredivisie side, while striker Jos Leonard grabbed a consolation.

ADO Den Haag scored three second half goals to progress courtesy of GVVV. The score finished 3-0 to the Eredivisie side with goals from Vito Wormgoor, Mathias Gehrt and Mike van Duinen.

Go Ahead Eagles nailed down a 3-0 win over DVS’33, with Erik Falkenburg, Doke Schmidt and Jop van der Linden with the scoring.

On Wednesday night, PSV came back from a goal down to defeat Telstar 4-1 thanks to a Jurgen Locadia hat-trick. It was a poor game which saw Dianga Matusiwa score at the Phillips Stadion after just nine minutes. Florian Jozefzoon equalised on 40 minutes before Locadia netted five minutes later from the penalty spot. The young striker converted his second spot-kick on 74 minutes and looked to handball his third in from a whipping free-kick from the right from Zakaria Bakkali. PSV were rewarded with a home time against Roda JC in the next round.

FC Volendam held an under strength Ajax side into extra time at the Amsterdam Arena, although the Eredivisie giants scored three goals in the added time to win 4-2 at the final whistle. Volendam’s man-of-the-match Robert Mühren equalised after Lucas Andersen had put Ajax ahead, before putting the striker scored again to put the Eerste Divisie side ahead in extra time. However, Ajax then rose with a Lasse Schöne double, and a Danny Hoesen goal giving them the victory and the home tie against the lowly ASWH.

Vitesse comfortably beat RVVH 3-1 even though they originally fell a goal behind. Theo Janssen, Jan-Arie van der Heijden, and Guram Kashia all netting with Jesse Eggers scoring for the minnows.

NAC Breda also had to come from behind against Smitshoek. Tom den Boer scored for the underdogs but Elson Hooi and Mats Seuntjens spared NAC’s blushes in a 2-1 win.

Goals from Filip Kostić and Genero Zeefuik gave FC Groningen a 2-0 win over AFC.

Rijnsburgse Boys took the lead against Roda JC through Martin van Eeuwijk, but the Kerkrade side fought back, and two goals from Frank Demouge to give them the victory.

FC Utrecht also coasted through to the next round with a 4-1 win over FC Den Bosch. The in-form Steve de Ridder notched again, Gevero Markiet also netting and Jens Toornstra scoring twice while Mark van der Maarel scored an own goal to give the visitors a consolation.

The cup holders AZ Alkmaar needed extra time to progress past Sparta Rotterdam by four goals to one. Johan Voskamp levelled the game up after Mattias Johansson’s opener. Meanwhile in extra-time, a double from Aron Johannsson and a Steven Berghuis strike saw AZ safely through.

Continuing their postivie start to the season, PEC Zwolle beat Fortuna Sittard 2-0 with Joost Broerse and Rochdi Achenteh scoring the goals.

Thursday evening wrapped the action up with Feyenoord defeating FC Dordrecht 3-0 thanks to a Graziano Pelle goal with Ruben Schaken and Samuel Armenteros adding to the tally.

Goal-scoring machine Alfred Finnbogason continued his fine form scoring twice in Heerenveen’s 3-0 win over FC Twente. Luciano Slagveer opened the scoring.

NEWS: Strootman ‘We have let the fans down’

It went all wrong on Thursday night for PSV. The Eindhoven club knew they could end the season on a real high by clinching the KNVB Beker but they failed at the hands of AZ Alkmaar.

Strootman: “We all need to look in the mirror. Me too”

“This was the chance to finish the season in a dignified way”, said PSV midfielder Kevin Strootman after the game. “We had the chance to still give the supporters something, the atmosphere they created was fantastic, but we have let them down.”

“We have to make a stand and we did not succeed, due to our own mistakes and for that we need to look in the mirror. Me too.”

PSV found themselves 2-0 down at De Kuip after just fifteen minutes through goals from Adam Maher and Jozy Altidore.

Strootman: “We gave away too much space and AZ scored from their first two chances and when they both go in, it then becomes difficult…”

After half an hour of play, Jürgen Locadia grabbed an goal, but then PSV failed to produce any chances. Until, Jeremain Lens was close to equalizing as he smashed his shot against the post late in the game.

Although PSV had three penalty claims turned down in the game, Strootman refuses to use that as an excuse: “Let’s not talk about it, otherwise I’ll be accused of complaining.”

KNVB BEKER REPORT: AZ Alkmaar 2-1 PSV Eindhoven

AZ Alkmaar hit a quickfire double to defeat favourites PSV Eindhoven two goals to one in De Kuip, Rotterdam to win their fourth KNVB Beker. The goals came from American international Jozy Altidore and Adam Maher. 19-year-old Maher showed the veterans of PSV how it’s done with an excellent opening goal and overall majestic performance.

In a dream start, Gertjan Verbeek’s side went a goal ahead from some magic from the young attacking maestro. Recieving the ball on the edge of the area, Maher ghosted past several PSV defenders and slotted the ball past Boy Waterman in the PSV goal after only 11 minutes. It was horrendous defending by Dick Advocaat’s team but a sublime piece of skill and the finish to match from Maher.

PSV needed to re-group and quickly, but unfortunately for De Boeren, it was not quick enough and they were hit with a sucker punch, two minutes later. The powerful Altidore scored his 32nd goal in all competitions this season on 13 minutes. A long ball through from Viktor Elm set-up the big strong American who ventured into the box, and forced a strong shot underneath Waterman. It was poor goalkeeping and poor defending all around from PSV again.

AZ were in full control is respect of the scoreboard but they were lucky to escape a good penalty shout against them. A Jurgen Locadia strike appeared to hit the arm of defender Nick Viergever, but referee Bjorn Kuiper waved play on.

It took some excellent work from Dries Mertens to create the PSV goal. Mertens sped past two defenders and crossed towards the back post where the ball met Wilfried Bouma’s head. Bouma’s header zipped across the goal for youngster Locadia, picked ahead of Tim Matavz for today’s game, to finish to give PSV some faith. This goal was PSV’s 144th goal in just 49 games this season and this equals a club record they set back in the 1987/88 season.

After the break, PSV came out looking likely that the Eindhoven side would reel in AZ during the second half, but chances for Mertens, Locadia and Strootman went begging and Jermain Lens missed a glorious opporuntity ten minutes from time, crashing the post with his close range shot.

AZ now enter Europe next season without having the worry of the playoffs, they will begin in the fourth qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. It is their first silverware since their 2009 Eredivisie title.

After the match, Jozy Altidore stated that this season ‘boys became men’ in this AZ side and on this performance, we can see that statement is accurate. What the future holds for this team is set to be seen with Maher almost certain to move on and Altidore, on this form, will be a wanted man throughout Europe.

Some major changes will happen this summer for PSV and on this display, they are well needed, whether or not Marcel Brands will be given the chance to spend money will need to be seen.
