What will Marinus Dijkhuizen bring to Brentford?

Despite defying expectations for their season and finishing in the championships play-off places the hierarchy at Brentford decided to go in a different direction, announcing they will be parting ways with manager Mark Warburton. The mainly unknown Marinus Dijkhuizen is his replacement, but what will he bring to Brentford explains Max Griffin.

After starting his managerial career VV Montfoort in the Eerste Klasse (Holland’s fifth tier) he guided the side to two successive promotions in the 2009-10 / 2010-11 seasons. Thus leading them to the Topklasse, one below the Jupiler League. He departed at the end of the 2011-12 season. His second job was with VV De Meern in the Dutch seventh tier, a major step back in what was looking to be a progressive career, he was now managing in the fifth tier of amateur football in Holland. He left the club in December 2013 after only 11 months in charge.

Two months after leaving VV De Meern, Dijkhuizen took up the role of manager at S.B.V Excelsior, a side in the Dutch third tierEerste Divisie, he took up the reins with the side in seventh, he started well – winning three of his first five games in charge.  He went on to win ten more games that season, drawing three and losing three. They were promoted to the Eredivisie after a 4-2 aggregate win over RKC Waalwijk – finishing third. While In charge he was commended for his attacking style, winning by fine margins in games such as the 4-1 against Den Bosch and the 5-2 win against FC Eindhoven.

Apart from an easy on the eye attacking style, what will Dijkhuizen bring to Brentford?

The club have said they want to be innovative. Managing the club on and off the field based on a numbers game, using stats for everything from buying players (scouting players statistically rather than watching them and determining their qualities in person) and even training their team, something they have said Dijkhuizen fits the bill with. He too wants to manage the football club using statistics . He is part of a club wide restructuring which has also seen Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles appointed co-directors of football.

Although a massive gamble with no experience outside of the Netherlands and only one job where he’s made it into the countries top two divisions (Struggling when he made it into the Eredivisie and only just managing to keep the club up finishing 15th ,before leaving in the summer of 2015) he is an attacking, progressive coach who so far in his career has consistently improved and is always looking to better himself. A drop down from the Eredivisie to the Championship is a gamble for both Dijkhuizen and Brentford but he fits the job criteria and it could prove to be a smart move for both parties, only time will tell.

Lets hope Brentford do not regret letting go Mark Warburton, the man who got them promoted from League One to the championship and then finishing sixth, finishing in the play-offs at the first time of asking.

Eagles Grounded – the demise of Go Ahead’s season

As the final whistle brought an unceremonious end to Go Ahead Eagles’ two year stay in the Dutch top flight, a defiant chant of “EAGLES TIL’ I DIE!” filled the early afternoon air at De Adelaarshorst. Muted applause mingled with jeers and whistles greeted the deflated players who made a sheepish lap of the pitch before taking refuge in the relative safety of the dressing room. The fans exchanged rueful glances and disbelieving shakes of the head; the Eagles would embark on their first campaign in European club competition since 1965-66, earned by virtue of a UEFA Fair Play place, as an Eerste Divisie club writes Steven Davies.

A 2-0 aggregate defeat over the two legs of the promotion/ relegation playoffs against De Graafschap, a side that could only finish sixth in the Eerste Divisie table, was too much for some fans to take; many letting their heroes know exactly what they thought.

The fans demanded far more from those who pulled on the famous red and yellow jersey.

The 2014/15 Eredivisie season had promised much for the Deventer club after a fairy tale first season back in the top flight since 1996. An impressive 13th place finish in 2013/14 had few putting the Eagles down for relegation with many backing the usual suspects: Willem II; the epitome of a yo-yo club if ever there was one, back in the top flight once more, Excelsior; perennial overachievers and largely dependent on the good graces of their bigger Rotterdam neighbours, Feyenoord, and FC Dordrecht; a team with a meagre budget, as most likely to be making the return journey to the Eerste Divisie come May.

The Eagles had defied the critics with a number of shrewd loan signings, a strong team spirit and crucially, a great home record. The club had lost a number of key individuals in the form of Jarchino Antonia, Erik Falkenburg and Xander Houtkoop, who collectively had netted 22 goals between them, but with the addition of Alex Schalk from NAC Breda, Giliano Wijnaldum from FC Groningen along with loan signings Lesley de Sa and Mickey van der Hart from Ajax; manager, Foeke Booy’s young team seemed well stocked for the season ahead.

This optimism was soon dispelled however as an opening day 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Groningen was followed swiftly by a similar reverse away from home at the hands of newly promoted Excelsior before the stuttering Eagles’ attack drew a blank in a frustrating home stalemate with nailed on relegation certainties, FC Dordrecht. One point from a possible nine after three fixtures that included two at home served as a dark portent of things to come.

A surprise 2-0 victory in the KNVB Beker at De Adelaarshorst against Feyenoord at the end of September was only the second success in the opening eight games of the season for the club in all competitions and swiftly followed by a reality check in the league as the Rotterdam giants returned a few days later, soundly thumping their cup conquerors 4-0.

The fact that the team mustered just nine goals in its opening eight games in all competitions was no doubt a worry to Booy and goal scoring would prove to be their Achilles heel as their strike rate over the course of the remainder of the season failed to improve. In all, the Eagles netted just 29 league goals while conceding 59; the 22 goals scored over the course of the previous campaign by Antonia, Falkenburg and Houtkoop were sorely missed.

Three wins in the remaining eleven games prior to the mid-season break did little to dispel the growing air of disquiet amongst those on the terraces; the Eagles’ once intimidating home had become anything but with only four wins, two draws (one of which was actually a defeat on penalties to FC Twente in the KNVB Beker) and four losses in all competitions prior to Christmas. Meanwhile, results on the road proved even harder to come by with the solitary victory at Utrecht in October their only success away from de Adelaarshorst; the Eagles losing five and drawing the remaining three.

The New Year brought renewed hope in the form of a pair of high profile loan signings; Glynor Plet, returning to the Netherlands from exile at Zulte-Waregem in Belgium and Wesley Verhoek, similarly on the outer at Feyenoord under Fred Rutten. Yet time would prove neither to be the answer to the Eagles’ attacking woes; a dismal 3 goals scored in 28 games between them. Verhoek, would be remembered as much for becoming the subject of the ire of the travelling Eagles’ support following the 1-0 reverse in the away leg of the promotion/ relegation playoffs against De Graafschap in Doetinchem, as having his block knocked off by Plet’s wayward howitzer against parent club, Feyenoord in De Kuip.

The second half of the season rapidly became something of a nightmare for the Deventer club with just three wins, two draws and an astounding twelve (fourteen, including the two legged promotion/ relegation playoff) defeats. In that time just seven goals were scored and a whopping twenty five conceded.

De Adelaarshorst became a welcome destination for visiting teams as the home side crumbled under the weight of expectancy of a demanding home support. This was illustrated most notably in the form of Mickey van der Hart’s air-swing clearance against reigning Landskampioen and parent club, Ajax; the ball bobbling awkwardly under the young goalkeeper’s left foot from team mate, Verhoek’s innocuous back pass and trickling into the back of the net.

With the fans patience wearing thin, things became increasingly hostile; left back Giliano Wijaldum was involved in an angry altercation with fans outside de Adelaarshorst in the wake of a home defeat to FC Twente, accused of not showing enough commitment to the cause as the Eagles nose-dived towards the promotion/ relegation playoff places.

Fleeting glimmers of hope came and went; a solitary home victory over ADO Den Haag in January, away successes against Zwolle the following month and the miraculous victory at De Kuip against Feyenoord in April.

Following the inevitable sacking of Foeke Booy as manager in March, Dennis Demmers oversaw the unprecedented victory in De Kuip; his only success while at the helm. The unexpected win which followed a seven match losing streak proved ultimately to be a false dawn. Even with the added support of former Bondscoach, Bert van Marvijk, who returned to the club in an advisory capacity, the club amassed a measly four points from its last six Eredivisie games; only NAC Breda and Excelsior, who themselves each garnered just three points, performed worse over the same period.

Overall the club won just seven games, drew six and lost an incredible twenty one amassing just twenty seven points; only FC Dordrecht had more defeats inflicted upon them over the course of the league season with twenty two. The fact that Alex Schalk finished the season as the club’s top scorer with a paltry four goals to his name told its own story.

The future now appears to be one of rebuilding both on and off the field for the club as they prepare to host European club competition at their adopted home, the Jens Vesting Stadion in Emmen (De Adelaarshorst undergoing a belated 21st Century face-lift over the the summer) as a second tier club once more.

Where does Feyenoord go from here?

With Fred Rutten leaving Feyenoord before the end of the season, and before the crucial Europa League play-offs, its leaves the great Rotterdam side in a sorry state of affairs despite finishing fourth in the league writes Max Griffin.

After crunch talks with Martin van Geel, the clubs sporting director, Rutten and the club have decided to part ways. Meaning they go into the crucial play-offs manager-less and in very poor form, three losses and two draws in their last five games to be exact meaning AZ pipped them to the crucial third spot and an automatic Europa League place – it’s also the first time they’ve finished outside the top three since the 2010/11 season where they finished tenth.

It’s not exactly surprising that the club have had an indifferent season this term, with them deciding to sell five key players in the summer. This included 23-goal striker Graziano Pelle and Dutch international right-back Daryl Janmaat without adequate replacements coming in to reinforce the squad. This made them unable to compete for the title, something they had the basis to do with the squad that finished the 13/14 season (other key players sold in the summer: Bruno Martins Indi, Stefan de Vrij and Ruud Vormer).

If they do manage to qualify for Europa League, even though they are some way off yet with Heerenveen and either PEC Zwolle or Vitesse standing in their way, it would merely be a consolation prize from a season largely filled with disappointment.

With rumours already beginning about key players at the club such as Jordy Clasie, Tonny Trindade de Vilhena and Lex Immers wanting moves away from the club to pastures new, the squad at De Kuip could be left with big gaps, and players such as captain Clasie will be hard to replace.

With last summer’s recruitment not going entirely to plan, the club left themselves worse for wear and it has affected them this season. Most notably at the start of the season where they managed only five points from their first six games, patches like this one and their most recent wobble where they have lost three games in five are why they have struggled to finish fourth.

With the inexperienced Giovanni van Bronckhorst now took over and rumours of major exits this summer, it is down to the board to get it right with their summer business, if not another poor season surely awaits the club, creating further unrest in the stands.

The signs are that things could be getting worse for Feyenoord before they get better. If things are not sorted out quickly by the board, starting with the crunch match with Heerenveen on Thursday where a loss could see the side without European football for the first time in three years, something a club of their stature would expect every season. If the board don’t get things right, could a repeat of the 2010/11 season where the club finished tenth be on the cards?

Rutten leaves Feyenoord, Gio may take over early

As expected this evening Fred Rutten has left his role as Feyenoord manager with immediate effect reports Ross Anderson.

A meeting was called with Feyenoord’s sporting director Martin van Geel and Rutten resigned after the talks. The 52-year-old former PSV, Twente and Vitesse manager took the decision to leave following his sides failure to reach the Europa League outright after a 3-0 defeat at PEC Zwolle this afternoon.

This result allowed AZ Alkmaar to overtake them in third place on the final day of the season, meaning Feyenoord will have to gain entry into Europe through the play-offs. The defeat in Zwolle was the last straw for club and manager as they both feel a change will be needed in order to navigate their way through the play-offs.

Rutten was already set to leave at the end of the season with assistant Giovanni van Bronckhorst to be in charge next season. We understand Van Bronckhorst will now step up to try and help the Rotterdammers claim a European football place.

Rutten’s side only managed a poor tally of two points from their last five games as they slumped to home defeats to Go Ahead Eagles and Vitesse and away draws with Willem II and Groningen before losing heavily today.

It was ultimately a mixed season in charge of the Rotterdam club for Rutten who never really won the full support of the fans. After a sketchy start to the season where they won only five points from their first six games, which included home defeats to Utrecht and fierce rivals Ajax and found themselves stuck at the wrong end of the table.

The team seemed to find their feet after that and charged up the table into the top three and finished top of their Europa League group with eventual finalists Sevilla. After their title hopes were cruelly dashed in a thrilling 4-3 loss to PSV, they still found a certain consistency in results and looked set for a top three finish before a poor end to the season has cost them.

With Vitesse only managing a draw at home with Utrecht, Feyenoord finished fourth and will play Heerenveen in the play-off before playing either Zwolle or Vitesse in the final should they win.

Eredivisie: The Race For Third

This weekend’s fixtures are set to have a massive bearing on the race to finish third in the table and guarantee Europa League football for next season. With the league title already sown up by PSV, Ajax securing second place and Dordrecht guaranteed to finish bottom, there is not much else to play for this season. All that remains is to find out which of the teams will contest the relegation play-off, to cement the teams who will play in the Europa League play-off and which of the teams will finish third.

On Sunday AZ Alkmaar host NAC Breda in what could potentially be a trickier fixture than it looks on paper with NAC looking to secure their survival in the league. Thanks to a police strike the big game of the weekend between Feyenoord and Vitesse is now to be played on Monday night. A point for Feyenoord in this game will take Vitesse out of the equation and it will also be enough to secure third place if AZ lose. Even if both Feyenoord and AZ win Feyenoord will most likely still finish third thanks to their far superior goal difference. A win for Vitesse will shake things right up and force it to go right up until the final day.

Let’s now have a look at all three teams chances of finishing in that final league position…

FEYENOORD

Feyenoord should have had third place sewn up by now, but after a stuttering finish to the campaign there are now in danger of losing it after doing so well to get themselves up there in the first place. Were also, up until a few weeks ago, looking up the table at catching Ajax in second but are now forced to look down after gaining only two points from their last nine. A 2-2 draw with Willem II didn’t look to be too damaging at the time but that was followed by a surprise first defeat at De Kuip since September to relegation candidates Go Ahead Eagles. Go Ahead had only won twice away from home all season and it was a damaging defeat that could have a big impact on their final league position. Before last weekends break in play a point away to Groningen would otherwise have been seen as a good one but in their current situation after going 1-0 they will be disappointed not to see it out.

With manager Fred Rutten and potentially several playing staff such as Clasie, Boetius and Te Vrede all linked with moves away it is easy to see why they may have tailed off towards the end but you would hope that they would like to put Feyenoord in as good a position as possible for next season, especially captain Clasie. Coach Rutten is already guaranteed to guide Feyenoord to their worst league position in three years but he won’t want to make it any worse. After scoring four goals in three appearances at the end of March, Anass Achahbar has failed to score in his next three. They will hope he can return to this form to guide them through the next two games. They will also be boosted by the fact that they have signed striker Colin Kazim-Richards on a permanent deal from Bursaspor. Feyenoord will be confident of securing the right result at what will be a crowded house against a Vitesse club that has looked slightly out of sorts this season. Terence Kongolo will be back after missing the game at Groningen and the only absentee will be Khaled Boulahrouz who was sent off in the dying seconds last time out. With expectations high the only thing that is likely to cost Feyenoord is their nerve in the big games which, barring PSV at home and AZ away, has sometimes hindered them this season.

AZ ALKMAAR

Nearest and most likely challengers to Feyenoord for third place, AZ are currently sitting in fourth with three points separating them and a place above. The team from Alkmaar could potentially miss out through their poor goal difference, which would need to see a twenty goal swing between them and Feyenoord in the final two games if they finish level. This has not been helped by a defense that has conceded a massive 53 goals this season, the worst record inside the top 11 teams. This year itself they have shipped four to PSV, six against Utrecht, three against Vitesse, four at home to Feyenoord and five at Heerenveen, a cut down on these figures would have seen them right in amongst it at the top.

Utrecht alone have put nine goals past them this season. Like Feyenoord it has been a fairly inconsistent season for AZ and they have never really been able to put a good run of results together. Good results such as the 2-2 draw away to Feyenoord, the 1-0 win at Ajax and 4-2 success at Groningen have been cancelled out by defeats at home to Feyenoord and both games against PSV. A run of seven games unbeaten from the end of October to mid-December seemed to put them on the right path until it was inexplicably ended with a 3-0 defeat at home to Utrecht. Straight after this game it again looked as if they had dragged themselves back in it with a run of one loss in eight leading into March. During this time they looked like serious challengers to Feyenoord and even an outside bet of a Champions League place a run of one win in five though showed their inconsistent nature. They go into the game on Sunday with two wins in a row including a crucial three points away at struggling Twente.

However, the fans will be disheartened by the sale of captain Nemanja Gudelj to Ajax this week, though he will be suspended for this weekend’s fixture anyway. Whether this will have an affect on the players themselves though remains to be seen. With Gudelj, their main source of goals, out it will now be up to the rest of the squad to pitch in with striker Steven Berghuis looking to add to his tally of nine goals this term. AZ will gain confidence from the from the fact the have already beaten NAC Breda this season 1-0 away from home, but teams fighting relegation at the end of the season can be a very different animal to the one at the start, so they can’t afford to be complacent.

VITESSE ARNHEM

Vitesse can count themselves unlucky that they seem to have just a very outside chance of reaching the top three. Their season seems to have gone the opposite from their two rivals’ as their poorest form seems to have come in the middle of the campaign. They would have found themselves in with a great chance of grabbing third spot with a win at De Kuip on Monday if they had won against ADO Den Haag in their last game. This defeat put an end to a truly spectacular run of 12 games without a loss including ten wins, but the shock defeat has left their hope of gaining entry in the Europa League automatically hanging by a thread. Anything but a win on Monday and they will have to go through the play-offs, and with what looks like Zwolle, Heerenveen and one of either Feyenoord and AZ joining them in there, nothing is certain.

Aside from the defeat at Den Haag, Vitesse can point to a disappointing start to the season where they failed to win in August and only had four points from their first 18. It looked as if they had found their feet between September and October when they recorded three straight wins, scoring 16 goals in the process but a run of one win in ten was to follow that though as their season fell away before them. The much needed unbeaten run that followed was vital and set them up in a good position coming into Monday nights game before the defeat to Den Haag. The team does posses some truly quality players in Marko Vejinovic, Davy Propper, Valeri Kaziishvili and Bertrand Traore and are capable of beating any team in this league on their day. Traore has 11 goals to his name and will look to add more before he presumably returns to Chelsea in the summer.

Vitesse can also take heart from Feyenoord’s recent slump in form and after seeing Go Ahead Eagles come away with three points; they are likely to be in a confident mood.

EREDIVISIE: Ajax 0-0 PEC Zwolle

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

AjaxZwolle

AJAX 0 – 0 PEC ZWOLLE

The first half was goalless, but it was intriguing contest as in form PEC Zwolle went to Ajax to try and get something from the game. An early chance fell the way of Czech forward Tomas Necid, but his shot was saved by Jasper Cillessen. Niklas Moisander came close to scoring as he fired a shot from outside the penalty area just wide, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson was proving to be a real threat as he had several chances in the opening stages to open the scoring writes Jack Jakeman.
Although Ajax were dominant in possession as you would expect, Zwolle looked very dangerous on the break with Tomas Necid looking like he had a goal in him as he forced another good save out of Cillessen as the half progressed, while the pace of Ryan Thomas and Jody Lukoki looked like it could prove Ajax problems.
Joel Veltman was playing very well at the centre of the Ajax defence, both at the back and he looked assured in possession, often making the correct decisions to set up attacks for the home side. Moisander, Sigthorsson and Thulani Serero all had the ball in promising situations at the back end of the half, but they all wasted the positions with a poor final product. Ajax needed to be more clinical, as Zwolle looked like they would get a goal as the game wore on. In the closing stages of the half, Joel Veltman headed just over from a Lasse Schone set piece.
The second half was more of the same, with both sides having chances, but lacking the quality in front of goal. Lasse Schone had a chance from range, which was well stopped by Hahn. Ajax had the better chances, and it was Sigthorsson who came closest after hitting the bar from close range, a chance he normally puts in the net.
For the away side, Tomas Necid continued to be a huge threat as he held the ball up well and constantly troubled the Ajax back line. His drive from distance forced the Dutch national keeper Cillessen into another stop. He was called into action only moments later as Bram van Polen was denied by the World Cup star. Ricardo Krishna had a late chance but blazed over.
The game fizzled out into a draw as neither side created many chances in the final stages, the result was better for the away side, who remain level with the Eredivisie champions. Today’s results have seen PSV open a two point lead, but the start of the season has been intriguing at the summit.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 4-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2014

FeyenoordGroningen

FEYENOORD 4 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

Feyenoord score four as they dominate 10-man Groningen. The sending off of Johan Kappelhof at 1-0 left Groningen with an uphill task and they were put to the sword by a very good Feyenoord forward line writes Ryan O’Grady.

Feyenoord and Groningen were both coming into this game off the back of two consecutive wins with Feyenoord perhaps showing that they are starting to recover from a difficult start to season in which they were knocked out of Champions’ League qualifying and the KNVB Beker. In their last two games they beat Go Ahead Eagles 4-0 in the Eredivisie, after losing to them in the cup, and Elvis Manu scored a late goal to secure victory against Standard Liege in the Europa League. Groningen won their cup game 4-1 against Topklasse (3rd Division) side Barendrecht and last weekend beat Willem II 1-0 at home in the league.

It was relatively quiet opening twenty minutes to start the game, the only events of note were a Jens Toornstra free-kick that was cleared by Maikel Kieftenbeld and a booking for Kappelhof, something that would be even more significant later. It all began in earnest in the 20th minute when Colin Kazim-Richards retrieved the ball inside the box before spinning and managing to get a shot away that was well saved by Sergio Padt. The rebound fell to Jordy Clasie and with Padt still on the floor he pretty much had an open goal to aim at but skied it badly from about 10 yards out. Feyenoord then got themselves ahead only 3 minutes later when Kazim-Richards played a lovely one-two on the edge of the box with Lex Immers before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the net. They had a chance to double their lead in the 30th minute when Kappelhof got his clearance badly wrong and the ball went out for a corner which Terence Kongolo subsequently headed just wide.

Elvis Manu then joined in the action in the 36th minute when he cut in from the left hand side and was in an extremely dangerous position but put his effort well over Padt’s bar. This was followed by a Feyenoord penalty claim when Toornstra appeared to be tripped by Danny Hoesen just inside the box but the referee Tom van Sichem wasn’t having it and gave the goal kick after the ball had rolled out of play.

The second half started with a kerfuffle when a corner from Groningen came in and there was a scramble in the box before Vermeer managed to grab it but as he was grabbing it Eric Botteghin swung for the ball and accidentally caught Vermeer in the face. He immediately tried to apologise but the Feyenoord players weren’t and a minor ruckus was started. The referee ended up booking Botteghin. As mentioned earlier Kappelhof was booked in the first half and in the 56th minute he picked up his second yellow and was sent off leaving coach Erwin van de Looi with 10 men and made it even tougher for his side to try and get back into the game. Midfielder Nick van der Velden was brought off for defender Roland Baas as a result. Groningen paid for the sending off almost immediately as in the 57th minute Lex Immers scored a wonderful header. Karim El Ahmadi ran down the right before delivering a ball into the centre of the box that Immers ran onto from the left hand side and headed it back the way it came leaving Padt with no chance. The Dutch attacking midfielder then had another good headed chance in the 65th minute when another sublime cross, this time from Australian Luke Wilkshire, found its way to Immers who this time could only head it past the post.

Manu then had a one-on-one with the keeper and he tried to put it through the keeper’s legs but the keeper was able to close his legs just in time and deflect it away from goal. Substitute Jean-Paul Boëtius made it 3-0 soon after in the 83rd minute when yet another brilliant cross from Wilkshire found another substitute in Mitchell te Vrede who his header was brilliantly saved by Padt but the ball flew straight up and Boëtius came in and headed home from close range. Te Vrede did manage to get himself on the scoresheet 5 minutes when a lovely chipped cross from Lex Immers found the bug Dutchmen unmarked in the 6 yard box and this time he didn’t Padt a chance.

EREDIVISIE: PSV 3-0 Excelsior

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2014

PSVExcelsior

PSV 3-0 EXCELSIOR

Despite their exploits in Europe, PSV outclassed Excelsior on Sunday, with pace and quality in the final third being the decisive factor. The home side are really making a claim for the title this season, after years of domination by Ajax writes Jake Jackman.

It was going to be difficult for PSV after playing in Russia just days ago, and Excelsior started well to increase the pressure, making the most of the tiredness of the home players. Although Jurgen Locadia had an early chance, which was saved well by Coutinho, the pressure was all Excelsior for the next 15 minutes. Jordan Botaka had a couple of chances and looked very dangerous with his pace, but he failed to produce quality when it came to the final product.

PSV started to show their quality, with Florian Jozefzoon and Luciano Narsingh proving numerous problems for the Excelsior defence, who were playing a high line, which was going to get exploited eventually. The home side scored a disallowed goal, through Jozefzoon as the pressure increased. Both Jozefzoon and Georginio Wijnaldum forced good saves out of the Excelsior keeper Coutinho. The former then had another chance from a header, but put it straight at Coutinho.

The home side managed to get Jozefzoon and Narsingh through on the wings on numerous occasions, but Excelsior were defending well in last ditch situations, which allowed them to keep the scores level. The two PSV wingers were looking very good as the first half progressed, but it was a bizarre way that led to PSV opening the scoring as Adam Maher put the ball back into the danger area, and confusion between the Excelsior defence and Coutinho led to the ball creeping in at the far post. The limited celebrations show that a shot wasn’t Maher’s intentions, but PSV won’t complain.

The home side nearly doubled their lead through right back Arias, as his deflected shot forced a great save out of Coutinho, who had to tip it over the bar. PSV did score before the break as their pace paid dividends as Locadia timed his run well to find space behind the Excelsior defence, before his shot goalwards was converted by Narsingh.

The second half was all PSV to start with as Wijnaldum and Jozefzoon both had shots saved early on, before an excellent finish from Jurgen Locadia saw the home side go three in front. It was a classic forward’s goal, as he finished well from close range. The pressure continued to build and the resistance showed early from Excelsior had all but disappeared.

Then something happened that could have allowed Excelsior back into the match as Jeffrey Bruma got a straight red card for a foul just outside the penalty box, although there was a lot of disagreement from PSV, which also saw Phillip Cocu get sent to the stands. Heracles then had a lot of chances to close the deficit as Sander Fischer, Adil Auassar, Rick Kruys and Daryl van Mieghem all had chances, but none of them could find the back of the net.

The game was fading out as the result was secured, but there were still chances for both sides. Andres Guardado missed the target worth a header after finding space in the box, while Luigi Bruins forced a good save from Jeroen Zoet. Substitute Rai Vloet had a late chance, but saw his shot fly wide.

It was a good contest for the first twenty minutes, as Excelsior looked sharp, but as soon as PSV opened the scoring, the quality shone through and they went on to dominate the game. The attacking trio of Locadia, Jozefzoon and Narsingh were all impressive and it shows the depth of the squad available to Cocu. The sending off of Bruma had little effect and PSV’s good start continues.

EREDIVISIE: Heerenveen 1-0 PSV

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2014

HeerenveenPSV

HEERENVEEN 1 – 0 PSV

Potential star of the future Daley Sinkgraven grabbed the winner as PSV lost for only the second time this season and both sides have a man sent off writes Ryan OGrady.

The home side came into this game missing striker Sam Larsson and having lost to Eerste Divisie side Roda JC 2-1 in the cup. Coach Dwight Lodeweges was scathing in his reflection on the game whilst captain Martin de Roon said the six senior players who played in that game had to take responsibility, not the 5 youngsters who were replaced for this game. PSV also brought an injury list with them as Andrés Guardado, Luuk de Jong and star player Memphis Depay were all missing, however PSV did manage to win their midweek cup game against FC Utrecht 2-0.

Despite it being goalless in the first half it was far from boring, the half had 18 attempts on goal and a red card to boot as well. PSV got themselves an early half chance in only the 38th second after Adam Maher just managed to keep the ball in on the sideline before playing a low cross to Jurgen Locadia but the ball bobbled just before the Dutch striker hit it and as a result it went wide of the near post. Heerenveen then took control of the game, pressing high and repeatedly forcing mistakes from PSV players. Their first chance came in the 5th minute when Joey van den Berg had a dangerous shot that looked goal bound but it his teammate, German frontman Mark Uth. They then had another chance only two minutes later when Daley Sinkgraven brilliantly controlled a long ball on his chest before knocking past a defender. Unfortunately he could only muster a weak shot and as a result Jeroen Zoet recovered the ball easily. Despite dominating, Heerenveen’s final ball wasn’t always great and as a result they sometimes struggled to break down the PSV defence. They nearly had a stroke of luck in the 21st minute when Joost van Aken mishit a long range effort and it was going well wide but Uth nearly ran onto it and had he been able to control it then he would’ve been through on goal.

The direction of the first half started to change after that chance with PSV starting to come back into the game. In the 26th minute Luciano Narsingh ran into the box before pulling the ball back for Georginio Wijnaldum who back heeled it to Florian Jozefzoon who hit a low curled effort towards the bottom corner but Kristoffer Nordfeldt in the Heerenveen net managed to change direction at the last second and push it just past the post. Heerenveen did have a couple of chances in the period of PSV dominance, these were both down to Jetro Willems, firstly when the ball was played to Luciano Slagveer on the right wing Willems slipped allowing Slagveer to race clear. Fortunately for Willems, Slagveer tried to square it for Uth rather than shoot himself and Jeffrey Bruma knocked it behind for a corner. Then both Willems and Sinkgraven went for the ball in the 32nd minute but Willems appeared to pull out allowing SInkgraven to cross for Uth who after controlling it with his chest hit a shot on the spin that was well saved by Zoet.

Then came the first of the two sending offs. Jozefzoon was put through and was in on goal when Stefano Marzo appeared to cut across the back of the PSV winger bringing him down. As Marzo was the last man he was sent off but replays showed that Jozefzoon had gone a bit theatrically although the red card was justifiable. Almost immediately afterwards Locadia went down in the box and half-heartedly appealed for a penalty but referee Kevin Blom wasn’t swayed and simply told the young striker to get back on his feet.

PSV threatened early in the second half as well, Adam Maher had a decent chance in the 53rd minute when he hit the side netting from a tight angle. The game swung back in Heerenveen’s favour in the 68th minute when Joshua Brenet was sent off for a challenge on Uth. It initially seemed harsh but replays showed that Brenet clearly had his studs up and caught Uth on his inner thigh after the ball had already gone. This forced Phillip Cocu to bring off striker Jurgen Locadia for defender Santiago Arias. Heerenveen’s pressure finally payed off in the 77th minute after some neat build-up play resulted in a goal for Daley Sinkgraven. Initially Slagveer had the ball just inside PSV’s half. He passed the ball to Uth who immediately gave it back with a lovely first time pass, Slagveer then drew in two PSV defenders creating space for Sinkgraven who he then subsequently passed to. The young Dutchman then appeared to get the ball stuck underneath his feet but then produced a lovely finish into the top corner leaving Zoet with no chance. PSV obviously needed to get back into the game but they were only able to muster up one decent opportunity which fell to Jeffrey Bruma. A shot from Wijnaldum was deflected off Doke Schmidt for a corner and the resulting ball in fell to the feet of Bruma but he could only put his effort over the bar.

EREDIVISIE: FC Utrecht 1-0 FC Groningen

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

UtrechtGroningen

FC UTRECHT 1 – 0 FC GRONINGEN

An entertaining last 30 minutes saw Ruud Boymans score for Utrecht and Tjarnon Chery miss a penalty for Groningen writes Ryan O’Grady.

In all honesty the first 60 minutes weren’t worth much of a mention. The first half looked like it was going to be entertaining when Anounar Kali had a long range effort saved in the first minute but both sides lacked a cutting edge and both were unable to create many chances either. Ed Janssen the referee didn’t help either, repeatedly giving soft free-kicks and as a result the game was very stop start, although Jarchinio Antonia of Groningen was the only player to be booked in the first half. Utrecht did have another couple of half chances, one was when Nacer Barazite brought the ball down beautifully before shifting the ball onto his left foot but the shot was very weak and easily saved. The second-half chance was when Utrecht were awarded a free-kick about halfway into Groningen’s half, the ball was put in and Chris Kum tried a reverse header but the ball came off the back his neck and went over the bar.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half almost nothing happened and if it wasn’t for Utrecht’s goal then the second half might’ve been a copy of the first. The goal came from a lofted through ball from Tommy Oar which Ruud Boymans ran onto and controlled well before putting it in between the keeper’s legs to send the home fans wild. As I have just mentioned the goal was definitely the instigator of change in terms of the pace of the game. 3 minutes later Utrecht earned a free-kick in avery dangerous position just outside the box but it was wasted by Yassin Ayoub. After this Groningen fought their way back into the game, in the 65th minute a long cross eventually fell to Antonia but he overhit his pass to Chery who was unable to control it. Only 3 minutes later however Groningen were awarded a penalty and Chery stepped up to take it but it was saved brilliantly by the keeper which seemed to take the fight out of Groningen’s fightback somewhat. Their only other chance in the game fell to Danny Hoesen but his shot was deflected into the keeper’s hands. Boymans had a late chance to double his tally and Utrecht’s lead but he put his shot just over the crossbar.

EREDIVISIE: Feyenoord 0-1 Ajax

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

FeyenoordAjax

FEYENOORD 0 – 1 AJAX

Ajax defeated Feyenoord by the single goal in this afternoon’s De Klassieker but they will have Jasper Cillessen and the woodwork to thank for the three points writes Will Burns.

Feyenoord head coach Fred Rutten must have wondered how his side was a goal down after just five minutes, when they could have so easily been in the lead. Jordy Clasie and Ruben Schaken had saw early chances hit the crossbar before Ricardo van Rhijn hit a 40-yard free-kick past the stranded Kenneth Vermeer to give Ajax the shock lead.

The Rotterdammers saw the woodwork prevent the equaliser as Sven van Beek rose above everyone from a Miquel Nelom cross. Minutes later, Jasper Cillessen pulled off a great save from Colin Kazim-Richards to remarkably keep the score at 1-0 to Ajax. Feyenoord were in full control of everything but the scoreline.

The chances were flowing for the hosts but none were easier than Colin Kazim-Richards just before the interval. After a whipping ball into the area from Jens Toornstra, the Turkish international did wonderful to control in the area and wrong-foot marker Niclas Moisander. However, the striker’s finished was a meagre effort as he dragged his shot wide from just yards out. The fans behind the goal in De Kuip all stood with their hands on their head.

The teams went into half-time with the Rotterdammers being far the better side but a goal down and the second-half was more of the same.

The Amsterdammers could truly thank Cillessen for the three points today as the Dutch international was quiet literally pulling out all the stops. After opposite number, Kenneth Vermeer showed a strong hand to deny Kolbeinn Sigthórsson at the other end, Cillessen stopped a great header from Jean-Paul Boëtius from a Luke Wilkshire free-kick.

As Feyenoord pressed, it looked likely that Rutten’s men would at least secure a point, especially when excellent work from Elvis Manu provided Mitchell te Vrede an excellent opportunity to equalise with five minutes remaining. The young striker had time to set himself up perfectly at the back post but his shot somehow stayed out via Van Rhijn and then Cillessen.

The striker grew more and more frustrated as did the raucous fans inside De Kuip when Te Vrede saw his late header tipped over the bar by the outstanding Cillessen.

Despite a massive 16 attempts on goal for the Rotterdammers, Ajax held on to win their fifth consecutive victory over their bitter rivals, which adds more pressure on Feyenoord boss Fred Rutten.

EREDIVISIE: Heracles 1-4 FC Twente

Header-EredivisieReport

SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

HeraclesFCTwente

HERACLES 1 – 4 FC TWENTE

FC Twente put in a convincing away performance to defeat bottom side Heracles, who started well, but faded, with a two minute period at the end of the second half killing the contest writes Jake Jackman.

In the opening exchanges, neither side could fashion a real clear cut chance, despite the positive intent from Heracles against a strong FC Twente side. The away side started with lots of attacking talent with the likes of Luc Castaignos, Ryo Miyaichi and Hakim Ziyech, all who can cause significant damage to opposition sides.

The first came after Ziyech played a nice forward pass to Kyle Ebecilio, who had space in the final third, but he could only fire his shot off target. Twente continued to push for the opening goal, but exceptional defending from the home side saw three promising positions from Twente prevented, with some brilliant last ditch defending. The home side then went straight up the other end, with Thomas Bruns playing a nice ball to Wout Weghorst in space, who duly went on the slot the ball past Nick Marsman.

It wasn’t long until the away side equalised, after a block fell kindly for Luc Castaignos, who finished well, a forward of his quality was never going to let a chance like that pass. Although he has always had a big reputation as a player, who had good potential, Ryo Miyaichi was continuing to waste good positions. The home side failed to retake the lead, after Rasmus Bengtsson mis-kicked, allowing Bryan Linssen to find Oussama Tannane, who fired wide from a great position.

As Heracles were preparing to go into half time level, Luc Castaignos scored his second of the afternoon as he headed home from a decent cross provided by Jesus Manuel Corona.

If this wasn’t bad enough for the home side, Twente scored again just moments later through a brilliant finish from Hakim Ziyech as Twente really started to make their quality count. It was perhaps harsh on Heracles, who played well in the first half, but it was certainly Twente who had the better chances and they made those count.

The second half started the same way as the first with very few clear cut chances as Twente looked happy to hold on to what they already had. Bryan Linssen had the first clear cut chance but his shot missed the target. Heracles were doing all of the running and the ball fell kindly for Simon Cziommer who fried straight at Nick Marsman. Despite the pressing from the home side, Twente quickly added a fourth as substitute Youness Mokhtar finished smartly after some good approach play. Iliass Bel Hassani had a late chance, but it would have counted for nothing anyway.

This was certainly a clinical performance from FC Twente and it has shown them as a dangerous side, who will cause a lot of problems this season. Their attack is very potent and they have the ability to finish in the higher positions, especially if Luc Castaignos keeps up the form he showed today. Heracles continued their disastrous start, and they still sit bottom with 0 points. They started well today, but look very vulnerable at the back, they are set to face a serious relegation fight, unless things improve.

TEAMS

HERACLES: Telgenkamp, Schenkeveld (Koenders 53), Veldmate, Engberink, Te Wierik, Bruns (Bel Hassani 68), Pelupessy, Fledderus (Cziommer 46), Linssen, Weghorst, Tannane.

Header-EredivisieReport

SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2014

VitesseHeerenveen

VITESSE 1-1 HEERENVEEN

Heerenveen held Vitesse to a great 1-1 draw on Saturday evening however, they could have left Arnhem with more writes Will Burns.

The hosts started the better of the two sides with Davy Pröpper, Marko Vejinovic and Zakaria Labyad forcing early stops from Kristoffer Nordfeldt, however all efforts from long range.

After some great awareness from Morten Thorsby, Mark Uth grabbed the first goal of the game on 22 minutes in empathic fashion. Thorsby held the ball up, while Uth sneaked behind him down the left side of the area. The German striker then smashed a first time shot into the roof of the net at Piet Velthuizen’s near post to shock the home fans.

De Superfriezen were not in the lead for long after Davy Pröpper scored the equaliser after the ball was carried forward by Denys Olinyk. The ball fell perfectly at the edge of the area for Pröpper to side foot home.
